From Trashy A to the Heiress’s Little Son-in-Law After the Idol Competition (GL, ABO) - Chapter 90
After a while, Xiao Yanjin stepped out of the car, the lipstick marks on her face completely wiped away.
Qu Yanran clutched a stack of documents, biting her lip as she stared at the sky. She had seen everything clearly just moments ago.
The famously aloof eldest daughter of the Ji family had been embraced by Xiao Yanjin, even showing a shy, blushing expression, appearing utterly vulnerable under the alpha’s dominance.
Yet Xiao Yanjin’s gaze had been tender as water, kissing her as if afraid of hurting her gentle as a dragonfly skimming the surface, every touch filled with warmth.
As someone who had never been in a relationship for over twenty years, witnessing such a scene suddenly made Qu Yanran yearn for love. She wondered when she would meet her destined soulmate.
“How’s the investigation going?” Xiao Yanjin found her expression odd half-smiling, half-dazed as if she had lost her mind.
Qu Yanran snapped out of it with an “Oh,” hurriedly handing over the documents while lowering her voice. “This is Mu Rouxue’s family background. It includes her elementary and high school records.”
Xiao Yanjin glanced at Mu Rouxue’s van, unable to see what was happening inside, then skimmed through a few pages.
Her family background was decent, a graduate of a prestigious foreign drama school, professionally trained, making her entry into the entertainment industry a natural fit.
So why had she been releasing pheromones toward her? At first, Xiao Yanjin thought she might have been someone from the original host’s past… but upon closer reflection, she couldn’t recall such a character. Ji Mo Ming had already given her enough headaches, she really didn’t need any more romantic entanglements.
“Regardless, I need you to keep a close eye on Mu Rouxue at all times,” Xiao Yanjin said solemnly.
Qu Yanran nodded meekly. Wasn’t this basically spying? Though it sounded thrilling, she still couldn’t understand why the young mistress of the Ji family would be so fixated on a stranger an Omega, no less.
Before she could speak, Xiao Yanjin had already slipped into the van, calling out in a coquettish tone, “Sister, I’m here.”
……
He Rou hadn’t had any work assignments in two months. The company was deliberately sidelining her, even turning down the few endorsement offers that came her way. Now, she had virtually no income.
Fortunately, Shi Zhengyi was often away for performances and variety shows, rarely returning home.
At least she had peace and quiet.
But He Rou wasn’t an introvert staying cooped up at home for too long would drive her insane. Yet where could she go? Those so-called friends of hers were probably laughing behind her back now that she had been blacklisted.
Truthfully, when Shi Zhengyi was around, she at least felt a sense of security.
That night, He Rou jolted awake in fright.
Outside, a fierce wind howled, rattling the old windows incessantly. Not only that, but the twisted shadows of tree branches swayed like decaying hands, stretching toward her as if to strangle her.
Then, a rustling sound from outside sent a shiver down her spine. She yanked the covers over her head, trembling as she burrowed deeper into the blankets.
Damn it!
Why had Xiao Yanjin chosen to live in such a place? It was pitch-black outside, not even a glimpse of city lights in sight. If she needed help, she wouldn’t even know if there were neighbors nearby.
Wait… there was a couple living nearby, a family of six. The man had a fierce temper and had even leered at her bare thighs when she wore shorts to take out the trash.
No way… Was that man planning to take advantage of her now that there was no alpha in the house?
He Rou couldn’t help but spiral into panic, immediately dialing Xiao Yanjin’s number.
Xiao Yanjin was currently busy taking care of her wife, washing her intimate garments in the bathroom, with no attention to spare for anyone else.
Relying on her was indeed a matter of luck.
Left with no choice, He Rou had to call Shi Zhengyi.
Shi Zhengyi answered quickly: “Hello?”
“Where are you?” He Rou hadn’t realized her voice could sound so fragile, trembling from the earlier scare. “Please don’t say you’re in the capital.”
“What are you thinking? I’m in the neighboring city, very close to Lan City. I just finished performing at a music festival.”
He Rou let out a soft “Oh.”
“What’s wrong?” Shi Zhengyi glanced at the band still roaring with music, the noise overwhelming. She hurried to a public restroom just to hear He Rou clearly.
“N-nothing.”
“Your voice is shaking, and you say it’s nothing? Don’t tell me there’s a burglar in our room.”
“Of course not.” At that moment, He Rou thought she heard a strange noise outside, unidentifiable, but the kind that had been keeping her awake for days.
“Tell me. It’s okay.”
“I’m… scared.”
The old Shi Zhengyi would have mocked her for this.
But now, Shi Zhengyi fell silent for a moment before speaking in an unusually steady voice: “Stay in the room. Don’t go out.”
He Rou nodded, tears welling up as she hung up.
At times like this, Shi Zhengyi was the only one who could comfort her.
Nearly two hours passed. The wind outside howled relentlessly, and He Rou, suffocating inside, finally peeked out for air.
Then, she heard footsteps in the hallway her heart lurched.
The next second, the door was flung open.
He Rou: “!!!”
Damn it.
She immediately called Shi Zhengyi again, but there was no answer.
Seriously?!
Not picking up in an emergency?!
The footsteps drew closer, each one like a bullet aimed at her heart, stealing her breath.
Gritting her teeth, He Rou dialed 110, she had to save herself.
Just as her finger hovered over the call button, Shi Zhengyi’s voice sounded at the door: “He Rou, open up.”
Flustered, He Rou hung up and rushed to unlock the door, revealing a travel-worn Shi Zhengyi with exhausted eyes.
“I checked everywhere. There’s no one, just some stray cats running around. You…”
Before she could finish, He Rou threw herself into her arms, burying her face in her chest with a muffled sob. “Why did you come back?”
Feeling the girl’s trembling body, Shi Zhengyi’s heart softened unexpectedly. She carefully wrapped her arms around her, feeling the warmth of her skin through the fabric.
“I was worried you might be in danger, so I left early and drove straight here.”
He Rou sniffled, clinging tighter to the alpha.
“You didn’t even answer my call earlier.”
Her voice was laced with a mix of complaint and coquetry, and Shi Zhengyi’s tone softened in response.
“It was in my pocket on silent. I didn’t see it. I’ll switch to vibrate next time, okay?”
He Rou neither agreed nor replied. Instead, she shifted slightly and gently pushed her away.
Shi Zhengyi blinked in surprise as the girl retreated into the bedroom, closing the door behind her.
“I’m not wearing a bra!”
Shi Zhengyi smiled helplessly and looked at his hand, the first time he’d held her, the sensation had been quite nice.
Especially when he saw the cold, elegant girl’s eyes tinged with red at the corners, glistening faintly like morning dew on grass, carrying a delicate fragrance. She looked so shy and pitiable that he just wanted to hold her forever, to protect and comfort her, to stand by her side always.
Shi Zhengyi had even bought her late-night snacks, worried she might go to bed hungry.
He Rou didn’t know whether to laugh or cry when had she ever gone to bed hungry? Ever since her debut, she’d been living on salads.
As they ate, He Rou casually remarked, “Speaking of which, why are the facilities here so shabby despite the high property prices?”
“It’s close to the city center. Why?”
He Rou shook her head. “I just feel like living here every day is unbearable.”
Shi Zhengyi was surprised was she thinking of moving? “I think it’s fine.”
“I hear weird noises every night. I can’t sleep.”
“You mean you’re too scared to sleep,” Shi Zhengyi teased as usual, though he had his own reasons for saying it.
He Rou thought about it, she really was frightened by the rustling sounds. Her old dorm and apartment had been fine, with excellent soundproofing that even blocked out street noise. But here, despite the sparse traffic, there were too many trees. The slightest rustle of wind made her uneasy.
“How about this,” He Rou mused after a moment. “We share a room.”
Shi Zhengyi, who had been drinking water, spat it out in shock, nearly choking as his brain short-circuited, leaving him coughing uncontrollably.
He Rou kindly patted his back.
“Seriously, sis, are you for real?!”
“Do I ever joke?” Beta tilted her head, her cat-like eyes wide with innocent disbelief.
Shi Zhengyi: “…”
Since she was offering so kindly, how could he refuse?
But when he saw the bedding on the floor, he froze.
“You take the bed or the floor but since I invited you, I’ll take the floor.” He Rou unceremoniously spread out a sheet on the floor, thankfully with a mattress to spare her bones the discomfort.
Shi Zhengyi twitched his lips. If she wasn’t holding back, neither would he!
He flopped onto the bed without hesitation, it was, admittedly, incredibly soft and comfortable.
“Hey, where’d you get this mattress?”
He Rou pulled out her phone. “Want the link?”
Shi Zhengyi didn’t open it. If he was going to sleep here often, would he even need to buy one?
Betas couldn’t release pheromones, so the only scent on the bed was He Rou’s natural fragrance and perfume, a faint magnolia aroma.
Unnoticed, the sky outside gradually brightened as the two slept peacefully inside.
He Rou turned over in her sleep. Admittedly, this was the most restful night she’d had in a long time.
The next morning, He Rou jolted awake to find the bed empty, her blanket still neatly wrapped around her. She remembered being a restless sleeper, always leaving parts of the blanket.
Walking out, she found Shi Zhengyi in the kitchen. “Morning.”
He Rou yawned lazily. “What’s for breakfast?”
Her voice, loose and soft, sent a shiver through Shi Zhengyi, who stammered, “Uh… n-noodles.”
He Rou gave a soft hum as she watched her cook. The sleeves of her shirt were rolled up, revealing pale arms with faint blue veins, a mature charm emanating from her. Standing at 180 cm tall, her slender, upright figure paired with an apron gave off a lazy yet alluring vibe.
He Rou found herself momentarily entranced before shaking her head and hurrying off to the bathroom to freshen up.
Shi Zhengyi’s cooking skills hadn’t changed, the noodles were still too salty.
But He Rou didn’t point it out. After all, the other had made it for her personally.
She glanced at the two fried eggs in her bowl, then at the single one in Shi Zhengyi’s. Clearly, one had been specially given to her.
“Were you scared by the noises outside last night?” Shi Zhengyi asked. “There are quite a few stray cats around here. They probably jumped onto the trees and walked along the hallway, making those sounds.”
He Rou hummed in agreement before hesitantly adding, “Actually, there’s another issue.”
“What is it?”
“I feel like the alpha husband from the couple next door keeps watching me when I take out the trash.”
Without another word, Shi Zhengyi took He Rou straight to knock on their neighbors’ door.
Soon, the alpha husband answered.
“Hello. Do you have some particular interest in my beta?” Shi Zhengyi had always been blunt. If there was a problem to solve, she wouldn’t beat around the bush, better to cut straight to the point!
The alpha was stunned. “What the hell?”
Shi Zhengyi and He Rou exchanged a glance before Shi Zhengyi pressed on, “When my beta here goes out to take the trash, why do you keep staring at her? Don’t you realize that makes her uncomfortable? If you have even the slightest inappropriate thoughts about her, I won’t hesitate to call the police!”
The alpha still looked confused before suddenly realizing something. “Oh! You mean she thought I was watching her while she took out the trash, and it made her uneasy?”
“Exactly,” Shi Zhengyi nodded. If she weren’t a public figure, she might’ve already thrown hands with this sleazy alpha!
Why did people always act so nonchalant about serious matters? They never considered how unsettling it was for women.
“No, no! She doesn’t even look properly when she throws out the trash, bits of it keep falling in the hallway. My wife said scolding a young girl in front of a grown man might scare her, so I didn’t say anything. Instead, I just watched from the window, hoping she’d notice me and check the floor for the mess!”
Shi Zhengyi: “……”
After an awkward apology, the two hurried back home.
“So…” He Rou hadn’t expected that outcome either.
“Sorry about that. I had no idea it was like this.”
“It’s fine. As long as you’re not scared anymore.” This was easily the most embarrassing situation Shi Zhengyi had ever been in just when she’d finally mustered some courage.
“What did you mean earlier?” He Rou asked.
“Hm?”
“You called me ‘your beta.’”
“Of course I had to tell him you’re my sister. That way, they’d know you have an alpha at home and wouldn’t dare mess with you. Naturally, as my sister, you’re part of my family.”
He Rou huffed. “Who wants to be part of your family?” Yet, for some reason, a faint mix of joy and disappointment swirled in her chest unclear and indistinct.
