- Chapter 11 - A Complicated Video Call
As the video call connected, Jian Chun quickly put on her Bluetooth earphones.
On the screen, the woman appeared to have just finished bathing. Slightly damp curls clung to her face and cascaded over her shoulders. She was leaning back on a sofa in her pajamas, looking languid and relaxed. Her collar was slightly open, revealing skin so pale it was almost luminous. It was a pose so perfect it looked staged for a camera—sensual and alluring without trying.
Jian Chun let out a low, almost imperceptible “tsk.” She didn’t even realize how visceral her reaction was.
She quickly suppressed her emotions and glanced at the driver, Uncle Liu. He had worked for the Yu family for over a decade and had practically watched Yu Siyi grow up. Jian Chun didn’t have secrets from him, but talking to Yu Siyi in front of others—especially when the woman on the screen was clearly in “flirtation mode”—made her feel awkward.
Jian Chun tried to clear her head, feeling as though it were filled with “colorful” thoughts. As the saying goes: To the pure, all things are pure; to the lewd, all things are suggestive. She kept her eyes darting around, not daring to look too closely at the screen.
Yu Siyi was speaking in a relaxed, lazy tone. Her voice was ethereal and soft, just loud enough for Jian Chun to hear clearly. However, Jian Chun drifted off for a moment, and when she snapped back, her eyes were fixed solely on Yu Siyi’s moving lips.
As Yu Siyi finished her sentence, Jian Chun asked, “What did you just say?”
On the screen, Yu Siyi’s delicate brows furrowed slightly. After locking eyes with Jian Chun for a few seconds, she smiled. “Why do you always space out the moment you see me?”
Jian Chun glared at her. How dare she ask? Isn’t she trying to make me lose my focus?
Feeling disgruntled, Jian Chun changed the subject. “Are you on the trending searches with someone again?”
“Mhm,” Yu Siyi asked softly. “You saw it?”
“I’m not blind,” Jian Chun retorted with a loud, cold huff.
The atmosphere shifted instantly. Jian Chun felt she needed to maintain the persona of a generous partner who knew her spouse had someone else “on the side.”
However, Yu Siyi’s expression remained unchanged. “I’ll handle this. You don’t need to worry about me.”
“Worried?” Jian Chun narrowed her eyes at the screen. “When did you ever see me worrying about you?”
“Alright, alright.” Yu Siyi moved the phone closer, her eyes full of amusement. “Whatever you say is right.”
Jian Chun’s lips parted in shock. She was genuinely stunned. She knew Yu Siyi “loved” her, but every time the woman expressed it, Jian Chun felt a mix of annoyance and helplessness.
“I’m done talking to you,” Jian Chun said, moving to hang up. She felt that even answering the call was an act of great charity. I’m far too kind, she thought.
In fact, she was so kind that she wasn’t even using this scandal as an excuse to throw a tantrum and demand a divorce—though her fingers fiddled nervously with her buttons as she wondered if she should.
“Wait, one more thing,” Yu Siyi said before Jian Chun could hit end.
Jian Chun paused, staring at the screen, signaling her to get on with it.
“The promotion might be extended, so I won’t be back on time.” Yu Siyi pouted, her lips looking vibrant and full.
Jian Chun’s lips twitched upward in a hidden smile, but she quickly restrained herself. In an exceptionally generous tone, she said, “It’s fine. Work is important.”
Yu Siyi sighed. “Work isn’t as important as you.”
Jian Chun’s face fell instantly. She swallowed hard. “Can you please speak like a normal person?”
“Chun-bao, I miss you so much.” The woman’s face loomed larger on the screen. Her features were so exquisite they looked carved from a perfect mold. Then, she added, “The weather is cooling down; remember to bring an extra jacket to school.”
“I know.”
“And don’t forget the things the nanny prepared for you.”
Jian Chun gave an impatient “tsk” and a short “mhm.”
“If there are any problems, remember to call me. Don’t try to handle everything yourself.”
Throughout the rest of the drive, Yu Siyi was so perfectly “serious” that Jian Chun couldn’t find a reason to hang up. When the car finally pulled into the villa, Jian Chun bid her a quick goodnight and disconnected the call.
The next morning, Jian Chun’s internal clock woke her at 7:00 AM. Since she was a homeroom teacher now, her schedule was much tighter.
At school, she spent the morning checking the winter break assignments. She noticed several students hadn’t handed theirs in and made a mental note to establish her authority as a teacher by making them catch up.
In the office, the Chinese teacher for Class 10, Cheng Xuan, greeted her. He was a middle-aged, jovial man.
“Teacher Jian, you look very young. How old are you?” Cheng asked.
“Are you looking to set me up too, Teacher Cheng?” Jian Chun joked.
“Well,” Cheng laughed, unbothered by being caught. “Someone did ask me to look into it.”
“I actually have a partner already,” Jian Chun said with a smile.
“Really?” Cheng looked skeptical. Jian Chun just smiled without explaining. It’s technically true, she thought. I was forced to have a ‘wife,’ but a partner is a partner.
Later, Yi Xueyang came over from the opposite office. “Did you watch The Record of Zhuang Yun last night?”
“What?” Jian Chun asked, still waking up.
“The drama starring Yu Siyi and Rong Zhen!”
“Oh… I didn’t have time,” Jian Chun sighed. The truth was, she didn’t think she could stay calm watching Yu Siyi on screen. She’d probably just burst out laughing at the absurdity of it all.
“From now on, we’ll have even less time,” Yi Xueyang lamented, pointing to her dark circles. “I was grading papers while watching last night. I didn’t get to sleep until midnight.”
“You just wanted to watch TV,” Jian Chun said, hitting the nail on the head.
