- Fighting For My Wife With Myself After Being Reborn
- Chapter 36 - Both a Variable and an Opportunity
The morning sun was just right. The early spring light lacked the scorching heat of midsummer and held a touch of tenderness instead. It wasn’t hot against the skin, but warm—the kind of warmth that induces a sudden bout of drowsiness.
Outside the window, the river flowed silently, its surface shimmering with darting golden light.
Despite the beautiful scenery and sunshine, Shen Huaixu lay on a beanbag chair with her eyes closed, letting her mind go blank. The blanket draped over her stomach had been warmed by the sun; through her coral fleece loungewear, it protected her abdomen from the cold air, ensuring her stomach wouldn’t catch a chill.
A few years ago, Shen Huaixu had saved up enough money to buy a house. After discussing it with Gu Yinghuai, she hadn’t hesitated to pay the full amount upfront for the apartment they now lived in.
“Look at this location, this view—it’s simply perfect!” At that time, a younger Shen Huaixu had stood before the floor-to-ceiling window with her arms spread wide, facing the vast river and envisioning the future for her and Gu Yinghuai.
Gu Yinghuai, who had just found an internship, poked Shen Huaixu in the lower back. She teased her, saying it was all thanks to “Tycoon Shen” being so capable that she could live in such a grand house at such a young age; the “soft rice” provided by her girlfriend was truly delicious.
That was still the youthful Shen Huaixu.
Upon hearing Gu Yinghuai’s words, she had grabbed Gu Yinghuai’s hand, turned to hug her, and laughed with unbridled arrogance. “This is just the beginning. When I earn even more money, I’ll buy an even better house, and then we’ll get married!”
“Married? I won’t agree easily without a ‘pigeon egg’ diamond ring, you know,” Gu Yinghuai had said, circling her arms around Shen Huaixu’s waist and looking up at her, her charming apricot eyes full of mischief.
It will happen.
Whether it was the house or the diamond, as long as it was something Gu Yinghuai wanted, Shen Huaixu would find it and present it with both hands, regardless of the price.
Shen Huaixu opened her eyes.
The sudden brightness was slightly piercing. She raised her arm to block the sun, her gaze lingering on a certain spot in the living room.
Gu Yinghuai loved this floor-to-ceiling window. Every holiday, she would drag Shen Huaixu along to decorate the area, styling it exactly how they liked before using a camera to record their beautiful moments together.
This year, a few more photos of them had been added to the living room wall. Compared to the photos from previous years, they had matured quite a bit. The only thing that remained unchanged was the way they looked into the lens—still full of love, brimming with starlight and happiness.
Shen Huaixu sighed again with emotion; her and Huai’s decision couldn’t have been more correct. This window was truly wonderful.
It was just a pity her Huai had to go to work today; otherwise, she could have held her and lied here to soak up the sun together. Shen Huaixu felt extremely regretful.
The coffee on the small table nearby had gradually grown cold. A fair, slender hand gripped the handle of the mug and took a light sip.
The coffee had been prepared by Gu Yinghuai exactly to Shen Huaixu’s taste.
It was rich and mellow, with a layer of crushed nuts evenly sprinkled over the fine milk foam, adding texture while enhancing the coffee’s flavor profile.
Shen Huaixu squinted her eyes, enjoying this long-lost happiness.
Gu Yinghuai had specifically brewed this for her before leaving the house this morning.
That girl—as soon as Shen Huaixu came back, she had started acting spoiled, clinging to Gu Yinghuai’s arm and begging for a cup of coffee.
In truth, she didn’t absolutely need to drink this coffee; she just wanted to experience the feeling of being taken care of by Gu Yinghuai after being injured.
Previously, it was the “other” Shen Huaixu who had been enjoying this in her place. That version had enjoyed it for a whole month, leaving the original Shen Huaixu with injuries that were already seventy or eighty percent healed. She didn’t even have the chance to play the “misery card” for sympathy.
I let her off too easy, Shen Huaixu thought, taking another sip of coffee.
The time she spent trapped in countless memory fragments had been both interesting and tedious.
It was interesting because she could see many sides of Gu Yinghuai she had never seen before; it was tedious because she could only watch and not touch.
Furthermore, that possessive bastard “Shen Huaixu” would manually “turn off the lights” at every critical moment, kicking her out of the memory fragment and sending her straight back into the endless darkness.
” Shen Huaixu cursed in a rage. However, there was nothing she could do to that person. In the end, she just hummed and sat cross-legged, quietly waiting for the next memory fragment.
Memory fragments.
That’s right—memory fragments! Shen Huaixu suddenly slammed her cup down, her face clouded with gloom.
Damn it. After wandering through a “gentle dream” last night, she had almost forgotten the most important matter!
With a grim expression, she opened the memo app on her phone.
Ever since she and the “other” Shen Huaixu established contact through notes in a notebook, both felt that method wasn’t safe enough. The notebook was too obvious; there was no guarantee someone wouldn’t accidentally see it due to a lapse in judgment.
So, after a discussion, they both decisively abandoned the notebook and switched to phone memos.
A phone is a private item. She and Gu Yinghuai rarely touched each other’s phones. Although their fingerprints were recorded on each other’s devices and they knew the passwords, they usually wouldn’t check them without the other’s permission.
This made things much easier for Shen Huaixu.
Without the risk of exposure, the two of them dared to put anything into the memos.
Shen Huaixu had even added several emojis to provoke the “other” Shen Huaixu.
The “other” Shen Huaixu prided herself on being older and more mature. While she looked down on Shen Huaixu for being childish, she would immediately send another emoji back to mock her in return.
If Gu Yinghuai ever had the chance to see their memos, she would surely laugh at how both of them were equally immature.
Fortunately, Gu Yinghuai couldn’t see it, and the two Shen Huaixus wouldn’t give her the chance. After all, the dialogue inside was completely “nutritionally unbalanced”—not a single word was decent; it was basically the scent of “green grass” (nonsense/banter).
Now that a month had passed, she didn’t know what the “other” Shen Huaixu had added to the memos.
Shen Huaixu ignored the previous messages at the bottom and clicked on the latest pinned note. The content was concise, summarizing the information Shen Huaixu wanted in just a few words.
At the end of the message, the “other” Shen Huaixu revealed a piece of information that the original didn’t know.
[In my memory, this car accident never happened. I suppose my arrival created a variable. I don’t know if this variable is a good thing, but I hope that after you wake up, you take my previous words seriously and think carefully about how to deal with future hidden dangers that have yet to come.]
[I don’t know if I will wake up again after this slumber. Recently, I can clearly feel myself getting weaker, and my sleeping periods are getting longer. Perhaps by the time you wake up, I might have already dissipated. If it were possible, I would really like to return to my Huai’s side, even if she is long gone.]
[I’ll leave the matter of changing fate to you. You’d better be able to do it, otherwise, I don’t mind completely replacing you (smile).]
“Heh, asking for a favor with that kind of attitude. If it weren’t for the fact that our goals are the same, I wouldn’t bother with you,” Shen Huaixu pouted, very dissatisfied with the other’s attitude.
However, the “other” Shen Huaixu wasn’t wrong about one thing: she could feel that the presence belonging to that version of herself was constantly weakening until it was barely perceptible.
Perhaps this message was the last time the “other” Shen Huaixu would appear.
No wonder she was willing to tear open her own scars in the message, presenting her bloody past in such meticulous detail to warn her.
Shen Huaixu sighed and deleted the message.
The content was too incredible; if anyone else saw it, they would surely think she was a lunatic.
Rebirth, traveling through time to change the destiny of the future, talking to oneself—no matter how you looked at it, it seemed like schizophrenia. Not being sent to a psychiatric hospital was already a stroke of luck.
Only Shen Huaixu knew that the contents of the message were by no means lies.
That was a future she had not yet experienced, and one she was unwilling to experience.
Recalling the images she had seen in the memory fragments, Shen Huaixu felt a surge of blood and a splitting headache.
She would never let anything happen to her Huai.
There was less than a year left until the time of the incident. In the words of the “other” Shen Huaixu, her presence was a variable.
No one could say whether this variable was good or bad, nor did anyone know what price would have to be paid to change fate.
But Shen Huaixu knew that no matter the cost, she would not sit by and let anything happen to Gu Yinghuai.
She wanted Gu Yinghuai to live a long life and be happy and healthy.
Shen Huaixu carried the mug to the kitchen to wash it. The warm water washed away the coffee residue on the walls and bottom, revealing the original pearly white of the cup.
No rush.
She had to plan this matter carefully and figure out exactly how to respond.
Since it concerned Gu Yinghuai, she couldn’t afford to gamble.
Shen Huaixu narrowed her silver-grey eyes, casually hung the mug on the edge of the sink to drain, and returned to the living room to lie down again.
Huai had forbidden her from doing any housework. Since she had nothing to do now, she had no choice but to be a “useless person” and lie down whenever possible.
Sigh, people are truly contrary! Now that I’m bored, I actually want to go to work!
Feeling a bit sheepish, Shen Huaixu logged into her work WeChat.
She didn’t have many friends on her work WeChat. Almost all the socializing was handled by Jiang Rui; she only added a few people with whom she had frequent work interactions.
After her car accident, these people had sent concerned greetings, and many had visited her in the hospital. However, Shen Huaixu didn’t know this, because at that time, the person awake was the “other” Shen Huaixu, not her.
The “other” Shen Huaixu was indeed her future self; she had handled the WeChat greetings and hospital visits flawlessly. Aside from Gu Yinghuai, no one had discovered that her “core” had been replaced.
Shen Huaixu quickly browsed through the message list, getting a general understanding of the news from the past month.
“That girl is actually somewhat useful,” Shen Huaixu said, offering a rare word of praise for the “other” version after seeing the well-handled replies.
Afterward, she clicked on Jiang Rui’s chat box, asking if there was any lighter work lately, as she was going crazy with boredom at home.
[Jiang Rui]: .
[Jiang Rui]: I think you really have gone crazy. If you’re sick, go get treated.
[Business Card: AAA Psychological Committee Member Su Xi]
[Shen Huaixu]: Get lost.
How annoying—it’s rare that I actually want to be diligent once. Shen Huaixu tossed her phone onto the sofa and felt bewildered.
She didn’t know how the “other” Shen Huaixu had endured this past month—unable to go anywhere, forced to stay home, not even allowed to cook a meal.
So annoying—
Maybe she should go bother Huai for a bit.
At the thought of this, Shen Huaixu no longer felt bored, and the injuries on her body didn’t even hurt. She flipped over and sat up, reaching for the phone she had tossed aside. She opened WeChat and began to pester Gu Yinghuai.
[Don’t Want to Work]: quq Huai
[Refuse Overtime]: [Sticker: I’m here]
[Don’t Want to Work]: Oh, an instant reply. Not busy?
[Refuse Overtime]: Just finished up. Is Axu bored at home?
[Don’t Want to Work]: Hmph hmph.
[Don’t Want to Work]: Applying for a half-hour walk outside [please.jpg]
[Refuse Overtime]: Alright, seeing as Axu has been quite well-behaved lately, permission granted!
[Don’t Want to Work]: [Sticker: As you command]
Shen Huaixu acted spoiled for a good while longer before getting up to return to the bedroom. She changed into lightweight clothes, put on a mask and a hat, and headed out the door.
