- Chapter 30.2 - A Date for the Little Couple
“How many trench coats do you already have in your walk-in closet? You still want to buy more?” Despite her complaining, Gu Yinghuai’s body followed Shen Huaixu into the store.
They were in luck; the store had just put out a new batch of clothes. The styles and quality were good, though they didn’t know if the effect would be as good once worn as it looked on the rack.
Shen Huaixu was the one who liked buying clothes more between the two of them. Perhaps because of her profession, she usually got tired of clothes after wearing them a few times (except for the T-shirts and cargo pants that seemed welded to her body).
Once she was bored with them, she would pack them up to give to those in need. This resulted in Shen Huaixu needing a new batch of clothes every season—even though, to Gu Yinghuai, they looked no different from the last batch.
The sales assistant followed them, but instead of pushing recommendations, she only stepped in to help when Shen Huaixu needed it. This sense of boundaries made them both feel comfortable. Since the clothes weren’t bad, they bought them immediately after trying them on.
“How about this one?” Shen Huaixu changed into a dark, long trench coat. The slim fit outlined her lean but toned figure, making her look valiant and dashing, exuding a mature and steady charm.
Gu Yinghuai nodded, then picked another piece of clothing and handed it to her. “Try this one. It should go really well with that coat.”
Shen Huaixu obediently took the clothes and went back into the fitting room.
When she emerged again, even with her mask on, Gu Yinghuai and the sales assistant were slightly stunned by the outfit. Gu Yinghuai stepped forward to adjust Shen Huaixu’s collar, teasing her, “Honestly, how old are you and you still can’t straighten your collar before coming out?”
“Isn’t that why I have Huai?” Shen Huaixu accepted the care with total ease. She loved the feeling of being uniquely looked after by Gu Yinghuai.
“You two have such a wonderful relationship. This trench coat comes in a ‘couple’s version.’ Would you like to see it?” the assistant chimed in at the perfect moment. She had realized while following them that although Shen Huaixu seemed to be the one shopping, if the person helping her pick (Gu Yinghuai) shook her head, the item wouldn’t be considered. It was smarter to market the couple’s style to Gu Yinghuai.
Gu Yinghuai: “Sure! Please bring it over, I’ll try it.”
The couple’s version of the coats had subtle differences. Worn separately, no one might notice, but standing together, the connection was obvious. Gu Yinghuai was very satisfied and, with a wave of her hand, bought both coats.
After visiting two stores, Gu Yinghuai collapsed onto a mall bench, waving her hand and declaring she couldn’t go on. She needed to rest; she needed to eat.
“What do you want for lunch?” Shen Huaixu sat beside her, lifting Gu Yinghuai’s leg onto her lap to massage it, relieving the fatigue in her calf muscles.
Their behavior drew glances from passersby, with several people whispering and pointing. Gu Yinghuai felt uncomfortable under their gaze and tried to pull her leg back, but Shen Huaixu stopped her. “Don’t move. Didn’t you say your legs were sore? If I don’t rub it out, it’ll hurt even more tomorrow.”
Gu Yinghuai pouted. “Too many people are watching… Okay, fine, that’s enough. Let’s go eat hotpot. I want mutton. I remember there’s a hotpot place upstairs that’s quite good. Let’s go there; my treat today.”
Shen Huaixu patted her calf. “Then I’ll let ‘Sister Huai’ lead the way.”
Gu Yinghuai pulled her leg back and hopped a bit; her sore calves felt much better, or at least the muscles had relaxed significantly.
“Let’s go! Your Sister Huai is taking you for good food!” Gu Yinghuai puffed out her chest slightly and walked ahead with her head held high.
The mutton at the hotpot restaurant was indeed excellent. Even Shen Huaixu threw Jiang Rui’s warnings to the wind and couldn’t help but eat a few extra bites.
“Axu, what time does our movie start? Will it be too early if we go now?” Gu Yinghuai rubbed her stuffed stomach. She felt like she would gain two or three pounds after today.
Shen Huaixu: “There’s still an hour. We can walk around to digest before heading over.”
Gu Yinghuai: “But I don’t want to move anymore.”
Shen Huaixu’s silver-gray eyes were full of indulgence and helplessness. “Then let’s go sit outside for a bit and head over when it’s closer to the time.”
“Yay! Axu is the best!” Gu Yinghuai cheered softly. “Let’s go out then. If we stay any longer, I’m going to be marinated in the smell of hotpot.”
Shen Huaixu, of course, agreed to everything.
Leaving the hotpot place, they found a dessert shop, ordered some cake, and sat in a corner to wait for the movie. Even though Gu Yinghuai was so full she could hardly take it, she couldn’t resist the temptation and tearfully finished a whole piece of chocolate mousse cake.
“If the movie doesn’t start soon, I’m going to end up eating another piece.”
“Be careful not to burst your stomach.” Shen Huaixu wiped the cream from the corner of Gu Yinghuai’s mouth and laughed. “Are you still going to eat popcorn later?”
Gu Yinghuai touched her bulging stomach and said firmly: “Yes!”
Shen Huaixu was completely defeated by her little glutton. “I really give up on you. Let’s go. Since you still want popcorn, we really need to walk a bit.”
“I know!”
It was mid-afternoon, and the mall crowd only increased. They didn’t really get to “walk a bit” in the end; they took the escalator to the cinema to get their tickets and wait. The wait was boring, but with Gu Yinghuai by her side, it was fine. Since they arrived late and there were no seats, they stood in a corner, leaning close to each other and chatting softly.
“The movie is starting, let’s go.” Shen Huaixu took the lead carrying the iced Cokes, while Gu Yinghuai followed with a large bucket of popcorn.
Their seats were in the very back row, away from the crowd. Gu Yinghuai knew exactly what Shen Huaixu was planning the moment she saw the seats, but she didn’t call her out on it, sitting down calmly in the inner seat.
The movie’s theme was very novel. They watched with great interest—Shen Huaixu even forgot her original plan of kissing in the theater. They whispered together from time to time, discussing the plot, and were occasionally stunned by the brilliant scenes, eyes glued to the big screen.
“That was amazing! It really was worth seeing.” After leaving the theater, Gu Yinghuai walked ahead, excitedly recounting the plot. Shen Huaixu followed close behind, smiling at her every expression.
“Let’s go home.” Shen Huaixu caught up and took Gu Yinghuai’s hand.
Gu Yinghuai held her hand back and gave a radiant smile: “Mhm, let’s go home.”
In the days that followed, Shen Huaixu rested at home. During this time, she and the other personality frequently communicated through the notebook—though it was mostly just exchanging insults.
Both of them tacitly hid the fact that they knew of each other’s existence from Gu Yinghuai. Using this information gap, “Shen Huaixu” teased Gu Yinghuai several times, leaving her flustered, annoyed, and helpless.
The “original” Shen Huaixu was even worse, often saying things that set off alarm bells for Gu Yinghuai, only to shift the topic with a smile just as Gu Yinghuai was racking her brain for an excuse.
During this period, Jiang Rui asked Shen Huaixu when she planned to tell Gu Yinghuai about her condition. Shen Huaixu brushed it off every time, saying the timing wasn’t right. Jiang Rui knew Shen Huaixu was stalling, but as an outsider, she couldn’t meddle in the couple’s business and eventually gave up.
“Don’t play it too far, or you won’t have anywhere to cry when it blows up,” Jiang Rui warned one last time.
Shen Huaixu nodded absentmindedly. “I know. I’ll find a time to tell Huai.”
As for when that would be, it was hard to say. Both she and the other Shen Huaixu vaguely felt that the time for a confession hadn’t yet arrived.
It was another night.
The bedroom lighting was dim and intimate. Shen Huaixu gently kissed Gu Yinghuai’s lightly furrowed brow; the beautiful eyebrows were knit together in a pitiful way.
Gu Yinghuai was crying again.
Tears of pleasure slid uncontrollably from the corners of her eyes. Shen Huaixu’s pale lips kissed the tears away, and she coaxed Gu Yinghuai with a soft, gentle voice. Her fingers, however, were the opposite—forceful and domineering.
“Why are you crying again?” Shen Huaixu asked, knowing full well why.
Gu Yinghuai weakly swatted her chin, blaming her for talking too much. Shen Huaixu wasn’t angry at being hit; she narrowed her silver-gray eyes and licked her lips.
“It seems Huai still has some strength left. Let’s continue then.”
Gu Yinghuai had neither the time nor the strength to resist. Sobbing, she was pulled into another round of pleasure by Shen Huaixu, drowning in the happiness Shen Huaixu brought her.
After the ecstasy, Shen Huaixu carried Gu Yinghuai to the bathroom to clean her up, eventually placing her carefully back on the bed so her body, which had endured an entire evening, could rest.
Once she was certain Gu Yinghuai was asleep, Shen Huaixu opened the notebook that was always on the bedside table and began to write.
[Let’s find a time to come clean to Huai.]
