Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband - Chapter 80
Pei Jingyan’s brow twitched slightly. “Not pregnant?”
His assistant replied, “Yes. Miss Bai’s test results show no signs of pregnancy, so it’s highly likely she isn’t expecting.”
How interesting.
A glint of amusement flashed in Pei Jingyan’s eyes as he spoke into the phone, “Understood. Keep this to yourself.”
“Yes.”
After hanging up, Shen Lai immediately asked, “What’s going on? Bai Hansui isn’t pregnant?”
The hospital room was quiet, and since Pei Jingyan hadn’t bothered to hide the conversation from Shen Lai, she had heard every word clearly.
Pei Jingyan put away his phone and calmly confirmed, “They discovered it during today’s blood tests.”
Shen Lai couldn’t hide her surprise.
When she had first heard Huo Chilin claim Bai Hansui was pregnant, she had thought the timing was far too coincidental. At the time, she had dismissed it as just that a coincidence.
But now, it seemed Bai Hansui had grown desperate as Huo Chilin’s attitude toward her grew colder, resorting to such a bold lie to keep him.
Shen Lai mused that Bai Hansui had quite the nerve to spin such a fabrication just to cling to Huo Chilin.
If Huo Chilin ever found out the truth, Bai Hansui’s fate would be far from pleasant.
Noticing Pei Jingyan’s complete lack of surprise, as if he had already guessed as much, Shen Lai found it odd. “Why do you seem so unfazed?”
Pei Jingyan replied coolly, “Didn’t you notice something off about Bai Hansui joining the show this time?”
His words made Shen Lai realize that Bai Hansui’s sudden participation in the variety show had indeed been suspicious.
For one, even if Bai Hansui had truly been pregnant, joining such a high-intensity program so soon was reckless. Yet, she hadn’t even informed the production team about her supposed pregnancy.
Didn’t she fear something might go wrong during the challenges?
Moreover, Bai Hansui had only recently been embroiled in a scandal. Staying out of the public eye would have been the wisest move for her.
Yet, she had actively sought to join the show—and once on it, she hadn’t exhibited the slightest caution expected of an expectant mother.
Shen Lai frowned. “So you already suspected she was faking the pregnancy?”
Pei Jingyan idly adjusted his wristwatch. “I had my doubts. Now, they’re confirmed.”
Shen Lai couldn’t help but ask, “But if she’s not pregnant, isn’t she afraid Huo Chilin will find out eventually?”
Even if she could hide it for the first few months, as time passed, Huo Chilin would surely notice something amiss.
It wasn’t like Bai Hansui could magically produce a child out of thin air.
Pei Jingyan glanced at her sideways. “If you were Bai Hansui, what would you do?”
“What else could she do? Either confess to Huo Chilin that the pregnancy was a lie, or find a way to fake a miscarriage, pretend she fell and lost the baby…”
Before she could finish, Shen Lai paused, catching the increasingly amused look in Pei Jingyan’s eyes. She swallowed. “You think she’ll arrange an ‘accident’ to ‘lose’ the baby?”
Pei Jingyan leaned in slowly, his dark gaze fixed on her. “Wouldn’t the latter be preferable to the former?”
His warm breath brushed against Shen Lai’s hair, making her shift uncomfortably. She coughed lightly and took a step back. “Well, if she wants to miscarry, that’s her business. It’s got nothing to do with me.”
Seemingly oblivious to her discomfort, Pei Jingyan smirked. “And what if she decides to drag someone down with her?”
Shen Lai caught the underlying meaning in his words and frowned. “Are you saying she wants someone to take the blame?”
Pei Jingyan idly twirled a strand of Shen Lai’s hair around his finger. “Who do you think she dislikes the most among the variety show guests?”
Shen Lai blurted out without hesitation, “Isn’t it obvious? Me, of course.”
Otherwise, Bai Hansui wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to poison her this time. Luckily, she had a strong constitution and managed to escape unscathed.
Thankfully, nothing had happened to the baby in her womb. If Bai Hansui had caused her to lose Pei Jingyan’s child and forced her to conceive again, Shen Lai would never have let her off the hook.
Noticing the teasing glint in Pei Jingyan’s eyes, Shen Lai belatedly pointed at herself. “You think I’m the scapegoat?”
Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow. “If she dared to drug you, what wouldn’t she dare to do?”
Shen Lai was so focused on his words that she didn’t pay attention to his intimate gesture.
Though his assumption was presumptuous, given Bai Hansui’s recent actions, it wasn’t entirely unfounded.
Pei Jingyan added, “Besides, apart from Huo Chilin and Bai Hansui, only we know she’s pregnant. If something happens to her, who do you think will be the first to take the fall?”
Only then did Shen Lai realize the gravity of the situation.
Right.
No one else in the production team knew about Bai Hansui’s pregnancy. Even if someone accidentally caused her to “miscarry,” they wouldn’t be held accountable.
But Shen Lai was different. As someone in the know, if she got entangled with Bai Hansui, it would be seen as intentional harm.
Moreover, given their past conflicts, it would be all too easy to pin the blame on her.
Seeing Shen Lai’s furrowed brows and serious expression, Pei Jingyan’s lips curled into a faint, imperceptible smirk. He teased, “If she pins it on you, not only can she play the victim, but she can also shift the blame for losing the baby onto you.”
Though Shen Lai usually couldn’t be bothered with others’ affairs, she couldn’t stand idly by when it involved her.
Suddenly, Shen Lai said, “You mentioned earlier that Huo Chilin is still in the dark, right?”
Noticing the mischievous glint in Shen Lai’s eyes, Pei Jingyan arched a brow. “What are you planning?”
Shen Lai shrugged. “We were together once. I can’t just stand by and watch him get deceived, can I?”
Since Bai Hansui struck first, Shen Lai wouldn’t hold back.
As if reading her thoughts, Pei Jingyan drawled, “Seems like you’ve got a plan?”
Shen Lai nodded. “But I’ll need your help with this.”
A playful smirk flickered in Pei Jingyan’s eyes as he curved his lips slightly. “At your service, Miss Shen.”
After three days of recuperation in the hospital, Shen Lai was discharged.
By the time she returned to the island, it was already evening. As soon as she arrived at the campsite, everyone gathered around to check on her.
“Shen Lai, I’m so relieved to see you’re okay,” Bai Hansui’s voice suddenly chimed in. Standing among the crowd, she looked at Shen Lai with feigned concern.
Shen Lai cast a cold glance at Bai Hansui and replied indifferently, “Thanks.”
Bai Hansui pretended not to notice Shen Lai’s aloofness and smiled faintly.
Just then, Huo Chilin approached. His gaze fixed intently on Shen Lai as he asked in a low voice, “Are you alright?”
A few days prior, Huo Chilin had wanted to call Shen Lai to check on her, only to realize she had blocked all his available numbers.
Additionally, Director Miao didn’t allow them to leave the island, so Huo Chilin had to abandon the idea of visiting Shen Lai in the hospital.
Under normal circumstances, Shen Lai wouldn’t even spare Huo Chilin a glance. But today, she surprisingly didn’t ignore him. Instead, she gave him a faint smile and said, “Yes, I’m fine. Thanks for your concern.”
