- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 79 - No Need to Take Care of Me Here
Bai Hansui’s grip on the clothes tightened abruptly.
When had Huo Chilin been following her? She hadn’t noticed at all.
Meeting Huo Chilin’s icy gaze, Bai Hansui struggled to suppress the panic in her heart, forcing a stiff smile. “I’ve worn this piece of clothing for a long time, so I threw it away.”
Huo Chilin said coldly, “Then why did you have to go so far just to throw it away?”
Bai Hansui was speechless, unable to respond for a long moment.
Huo Chilin stared at her intently. “And shouldn’t you explain why there’s raspberry juice on your clothes?”
A flicker of panic crossed Bai Hansui’s face. “That was from when I accidentally got some on me while doing a task today.”
Huo Chilin cut straight to the point. “Didn’t you say you had a stomachache and didn’t touch any of the props?”
He had deliberately gone to ask Wu Qi earlier, who had been next to the two of them at the time and had overheard Bai Hansui’s conversation with Shen Lai.
And what a coincidence, not long after Shen Lai started her task, something had happened to her.
Coupled with Bai Hansui’s furtive behavior in disposing of the clothes, if it had really just been an accidental stain, she could have simply thrown the clothes away. Why go to such lengths to get rid of them?
Unless there was more than just raspberry juice on that piece of clothing, unless there was something else.
Bai Hansui stammered, “Maybe I accidentally got some on it when I was helping to carry things.”
Seeing that Bai Hansui was still making excuses, Huo Chilin seemed to lose his patience. “In that case, let’s send this piece of clothing for testing.”
At these words, Bai Hansui panicked instantly.
If it were sent for testing, her act of poisoning Shen Lai would be exposed.
As Huo Chilin turned to leave with the clothes, Bai Hansui grabbed his hand in terror. “Chilin, no! I was wrong, I shouldn’t have targeted Shen Lai!”
“I didn’t mean to! You kept ignoring me and focusing on her, and I just… I wasn’t thinking straight, that’s why I did it!”
“I never really wanted to hurt her!”
Huo Chilin looked at Bai Hansui with unconcealed disappointment. He hadn’t expected her to be the one behind this.
The Bai Hansui in his memory had been kind and generous, unwilling to even speak ill of others behind their backs. That was why he had been drawn to her in the first place.
But now, in her jealousy toward Shen Lai, she had resorted to something as vicious as poisoning.
Huo Chilin’s voice was filled with disappointment and anger. “She’s pregnant, how could you do something like this?”
Bai Hansui’s eyes reddened, tears clinging to her lashes as she choked out, “I know I was wrong, I’ll never do it again! Please give me another chance, okay? I promise there won’t be a next time!”
Huo Chilin looked at her, feeling for the first time that the person before him was a stranger.
Had Bai Hansui changed, or had she always been like this?
Seeing Huo Chilin remain silent, Bai Hansui grew even more afraid. Clutching his hand tightly, she pleaded, “Chilin, for the sake of the child in my belly, your child, please don’t tell anyone about this, okay?”
At the mention of the child, Huo Chilin’s expression wavered slightly.
Seizing the opportunity, Bai Hansui pressed further. “Chilin, if word gets out, my reputation will be ruined. Not just me, even our child will suffer. How could you bear to let our child be the subject of gossip before they’re even born?”
Her long lashes trembled as delicately as cicada wings, paired with those moist eyes, making her look utterly pitiful.
Huo Chilin thought of the child in her belly and softened.
Even if he was dissatisfied with Bai Hansui’s actions, after all, she was the mother of his child. No matter what, he couldn’t let anything happen to her.
His voice icy, Huo Chilin said, “This is the last time. If there’s a next time, don’t blame me for turning my back on you.”
Bai Hansui’s eyes lit up, and she hurriedly replied, “There won’t be! I promise I’ll never do anything like this again!”
Seeing the disgust in Huo Chilin’s expression, she moved closer, trying to please him, and reached out to touch his arm. “Huo Chilin, thank you.”
Huo Chilin subtly avoided her hand.
If it weren’t for the fact that Bai Hansui was carrying his child, he wouldn’t have helped her cover this up. For now, Shen Lai would just have to endure the injustice.
As for Shen Lai, he would make it up to her properly after she was discharged from the hospital.
Just then, a staff member’s voice came from outside the tent. “Miss Bai, Young Master Huo, are you there?”
Hearing this, Bai Hansui quickly wiped the tears from her cheeks. She went to the tent entrance, unzipped it, and tried her best to keep her expression neutral. “I’m here. What’s the matter?”
The staff member explained, “We’ve discovered that recent filming segments involved highly allergenic props. So, we need to screen all guests for potential contact allergies or heavy metal poisoning risks. Everyone is required to undergo toxicology screening.”
“Highly allergenic props?”
“Yes, so we’d appreciate it if you and Young Master Huo could cooperate with the screening.”
Before Bai Hansui could respond, Huo Chilin stepped out from inside the tent. “Let’s get screened, then.”
A strange feeling crept into Bai Hansui’s heart. Why was this screening happening right after Shen Lai’s incident?
But then she thought, the clothes had already been disposed of, and Huo Chilin had promised not to say anything. Even if they did screen her, they wouldn’t find anything.
Reassured, Bai Hansui followed Huo Chilin to undergo the screening.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Shen Lai woke from her sleep to find that it was already dark outside.
The ward was pitch-black, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Glancing at the time on her phone, she saw it was almost midnight. Assuming Pei Jingyan had already left, she started to sit up, only to see him leaning back in the chair, eyes closed, arms crossed, as if asleep.
Shen Lai paused.
Had Pei Jingyan been here watching over her all day?
Pursing her lips, she reached out and gently nudged him.
A moment later, Pei Jingyan opened his eyes and saw Shen Lai looking at him with a complicated expression. “You should go to a nearby hotel to sleep. There’s no need to stay here and take care of me.”
The aloofness around Pei Jingyan faded slightly, his brows carrying a faint weariness. “Who said I was taking care of you? I’m taking care of the child in your belly.”
Shen Lai’s heart felt like it had been struck by a dull hammer, not painful, but achingly sour. Softly, she said, “I know it’s for the child. You don’t have to keep reminding me.”
The brief warmth between them cooled imperceptibly. Just then, Pei Jingyan’s phone rang, it was his assistant calling.
“President Pei, the blood test results from the program team’s guest screenings are in.”
Pei Jingyan replied indifferently, “It’s Bai Hansui, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
Pei Jingyan’s expression didn’t change in the slightest, as if he had already guessed the outcome.
“By the way, President Pei, we made another discovery while reviewing Bai Hansui’s report.”
Pei Jingyan’s brow twitched slightly. “What is it?”
The assistant’s voice came through the phone. “Based on the blood test results, we found that Miss Bai is not pregnant.”
