- Chapter 60 - So Eager to Sleep with Me?
Shen Lai laughed. “Young Master Huo, are you suggesting I become the other woman?”
Huo Chilin’s brows furrowed tightly.
Shen Lai curled her lips. “Does Bai Hansui know you came to say these things to me?”
Huo Chilin’s expression turned grave, and for a moment, he didn’t answer the question.
Seeing his reaction, Shen Lai knew Bai Hansui was definitely unaware. She sneered, “When we were together, you hooked up with Bai Hansui behind my back. Now that you’re with her, you come back to me. Does Young Master Huo have a habit of revisiting old flames?”
Huo Chilin clenched his teeth. “I know you’re still angry with me, but I also know you still have feelings for me. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been trying to get my attention on the show all this time.”
Shen Lai almost thought there was something wrong with her hearing.
She was deliberately trying to get Huo Chilin’s attention?
Shen Lai said coldly, “If you’re suffering from delusions, I suggest you get checked at a psychiatric hospital.”
“You’re just resentful because I dumped you when your family was in trouble, aren’t you?” Huo Chilin tightened his fists. “I admit, I was blinded by Bai Hansui back then, which is why I did that. But I regret it now. I want to get back together with you.”
Shen Lai laughed. “Huo Chilin, do you think I’m some pet you can discard and pick up again whenever you feel like it?”
Huo Chilin’s face darkened. “You know that’s not what I meant.”
Shen Lai cut him off. “No need. I won’t divorce Pei Jingyan.”
Huo Chilin’s temple twitched. “Why? Just because I’m with Bai Hansui?”
He took a deep breath, as if making a difficult decision. “If that’s what bothers you, I can break up with her. But you’ll have to give me some time to handle it properly.”
A mocking smile tugged at Shen Lai’s lips. “How generous of Young Master Huo, willing to take me back even when I’m pregnant.”
Huo Chilin’s gaze involuntarily dropped to Shen Lai’s abdomen. He gritted his teeth. “If you really want a child, I can have one with you. But the condition is you can’t keep this one.”
Shen Lai had no idea where Huo Chilin got the confidence to think she’d get back with an ex who betrayed her. She smiled. “Why would I give up Pei Jingyan for you?”
“Are you more handsome than him? Taller? Or from a better family?”
Huo Chilin seemed choked, unable to answer.
Looking at the man before her, Shen Lai wondered how her judgment could have been so poor in the past to have ever been with someone like Huo Chilin.
Pei Jingyan had helped her so much during this time and never once demanded anything in return.
Compared to him, Pei Jingyan was far more honorable.
“Huo Chilin, remember this clearly, we’re already broken up. Don’t harass me again in the future.”
With that, Shen Lai pulled out her phone from her pocket, showing that it was recording. “If you keep pestering me, I won’t hesitate to post today’s recording online. Let the netizens see how you’re trying to play both sides.”
Huo Chilin’s expression changed drastically. “You set me up?”
Shen Lai smiled faintly. “After being tricked by you and Bai Hansui so many times, I had to learn to be smarter, didn’t I?”
Without another glance at Huo Chilin, she turned and left the hospital.
In the car, Pei Jingyan was leaning back in his seat with his eyes closed. Hearing the sound, he didn’t open his eyes. “What took you so long?”
Shen Lai didn’t mention Huo Chilin’s earlier harassment and brushed it off vaguely, “Something came up, so I got delayed a bit.”
Pei Jingyan slowly opened his eyes and turned to look at Shen Lai.
With that glance, he caught sight of Huo Chilin outside the window.
Huo Chilin hadn’t expected Pei Jingyan to be in the car as well. His fists clenched tightly, emitting a faint creaking sound.
Pei Jingyan glanced at Shen Lai, then at Huo Chilin’s murderous glare, as if realizing something. The corners of his thin lips curled slightly.
Just as Shen Lai was about to fasten her seatbelt, Pei Jingyan suddenly leaned in, half his body pressing close. The cool scent of pine mixed with the fragrance inside the car enveloped her, the shifting shadows making his profile flicker between light and dark.
Shen Lai instinctively held her breath.
Seeing Pei Jingyan so close, she couldn’t help but swallow. “What are you doing?”
Pei Jingyan’s slender fingers hooked the seatbelt in front of her, his voice dropping low, like sandpaper grazing silk. “Of course, helping you with your seatbelt. What else would I be doing?”
The distance between them was so close it almost looked like an embrace.
Shen Lai’s gaze fell on Pei Jingyan’s hand, her expression slightly uneasy. “I can do it myself.”
Her fingertips had just touched the buckle when Pei Jingyan’s warm hand covered hers, the metal clasp glinting with fragmented light. “Why so nervous? It’s not like I’d do anything to you.”
From Huo Chilin’s angle, it looked as though Pei Jingyan had kissed Shen Lai. In that instant, his heart plummeted, and uncontrollable fury surfaced on his face.
He wanted nothing more than to rush over and pull Pei Jingyan away, to keep him far from Shen Lai.
The temperature inside the car gradually rose, the air from the vents feeling almost scalding.
With a soft click, the seatbelt snapped into place, finally dispersing the thick, ambiguous silence in the car. Shen Lai, like a rabbit seizing a chance to escape, quickly put distance between them.
Only then did she realize the car had started at some point and was already a fair distance away.
Watching Huo Chilin grow smaller in the rearview mirror, a shadow flickered in Pei Jingyan’s eyes. He leaned back into his seat as if nothing had happened.
Shen Lai’s face burned, and she could only pretend to look at the scenery outside, though the heat in her cheeks refused to fade.
It was all Pei Jingyan’s fault for doing things that were so easily misunderstood.
If she didn’t know he didn’t like her, she might have thought he was deliberately taking advantage.
On the way back, Shen Lai received a text from an unknown number: “Shen Lai, don’t regret this.”
No doubt Huo Chilin had sent it using someone else’s phone.
Shen Lai couldn’t be bothered to reply. She deleted and blocked the number in one swift motion.
Huo Chilin had treated Bai Hansui this way, he’d do the same to her eventually. She’d already fallen for it once; she wouldn’t make the same mistake again.
Besides, if she had to choose between Huo Chilin and Pei Jingyan, she’d pick Pei Jingyan any day.
At least Pei Jingyan still looked somewhat presentable.
The thought made Shen Lai glance at Pei Jingyan involuntarily. The image of him fastening her seatbelt flashed unbidden in her mind, and she quickly suppressed the memory, pretending to focus on the passing scenery.
By the time they returned to the villa, it was already evening. After dinner, Shen Lai headed to her room to rest, instinctively walking toward the master bedroom.
Only when she reached the door did she suddenly remember something and freeze mid-step.
Wait, they weren’t filming the show anymore. Why was she heading to Pei Jingyan’s room?
Realizing this, Shen Lai quickly turned to leave, only to bump right into Pei Jingyan’s teasing gaze behind her.
Pei Jingyan leaned lazily against the wall, arms crossed, and drawled, “Miss Shen, the show’s over. Are you really that eager to sleep with me?”
