- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 59 - A Kiss as Thanks
The words Shen Lai was about to hurl at Pei Jingyan got stuck in her throat.
Especially under Pei Jingyan’s mocking gaze, she felt a pang of guilt. “N-no.”
“No?” Pei Jingyan’s lips curled slightly. “Then why didn’t you tell your mother about us?”
Shen Lai pressed her lips together. “I haven’t told my mom about our marriage yet. I’m afraid she won’t be able to accept it right away.”
Besides, she hadn’t planned to tell her at all. Once Pei Jingyan secured his position as heir, their deal would be over. Some things didn’t need to be shared with family.
Pei Jingyan leaned in, his cool aura enveloping her, his tone unreadable. “What? Does Miss Shen think I’m not presentable enough?”
With his chiseled features so close, Shen Lai instinctively leaned back to put distance between them. She turned her head away and muttered, “You are my boss. It’s not like I lied.”
And she just didn’t know how to explain it to her mom.
Her longtime rival suddenly becoming her husband and with a child on the way, sounded bizarre no matter how you spun it.
Not to mention, if her mom found out she’d sold herself for money, she’d refuse further treatment.
She couldn’t let that happen.
Pei Jingyan smirked. “So Miss Shen shares a bed with her boss. How enlightening.”
“You!”
Shen Lai glared at him, but remembering he was helping transfer her mother to a better hospital, she swallowed her anger.
Fine. Patience was key to big plans!
She slowly lowered her hand. “Say whatever you want. That’s not what I meant.”
Pei Jingyan slid his hands into his pockets and abruptly changed the subject. “Did you ever introduce Huo Chilin to your family?”
Shen Lai had no idea why he’d bring up Huo Chilin now. Annoyed, she snapped, “Of course not. After my mom found out he cheated, she couldn’t stand him. She even said if she ever saw him, she’d throw glutinous rice at him.”
Hearing this, Pei Jingyan’s lips curved slightly. “Alright. My assistant will handle your mother’s discharge later. Tell the caregiver to get ready.”
Shen Lai didn’t understand why his mood had suddenly improved.
Just moments ago, he’d been upset over her calling him her boss.
Truly, a man’s heart was as unfathomable as the ocean’s depths.
Pei Jingyan’s assistant worked fast. That same day, Chang Suning was transferred to the best neurosurgery hospital in the city.
Shen Lai had originally wanted to send her mother here, but they couldn’t even get on the waiting list.
Power and privilege really made all the difference. A snap of the fingers, and problems vanished.
Taking in the pristine ward and attentive medical staff, Shen Lai knew it was all Pei Jingyan’s doing. Her expression grew complicated as she turned to him. “Thank you.”
Without him, her mother would never have received such top-tier care.
Pei Jingyan replied indifferently, “This was part of our agreement from the start. No need for thanks.”
Even so, their initial deal only covered medical expenses, not a transfer to a premium hospital.
Shen Lai insisted stubbornly, “I’m thanking you anyway.”
Pei Jingyan glanced at her. Her expression was earnest, her bright, clear eyes fixed unwaveringly on him.
Pei Jingyan suddenly felt mischievous and teased, “Is this how you thank me?”
Shen Lai blinked in confusion, “Then how would you like me to thank you?”
Pei Jingyan shoved his hands into his pockets and leaned forward abruptly, “How about a kiss as repayment?”
Shen Lai froze for a moment before her cheeks and ears flushed red.
Watching Shen Lai’s face visibly redden, Pei Jingyan smirked and straightened up again, “Just kidding.”
So, it was a joke.
Shen Lai finally relaxed, only to realize something belatedly. She couldn’t help but say, “Were you deliberately messing with me?”
Pei Jingyan glanced at her, “Finally catching on, are you?”
Shen Lai gritted her teeth.
If it weren’t for the fact that Pei Jingyan had helped her so much, she would have bitten him!
Pei Jingyan checked the time, “It’s getting late. Let’s head back.”
Shen Lai hesitated, “You can go ahead. I’ll stay here to watch over my mom.”
Pei Jingyan said coolly, “I wasn’t asking for your opinion.”
Seeing Shen Lai about to protest, he added, “Even if you don’t consider yourself, think about the baby in your belly.”
So, Pei Jingyan was worried about the baby.
Shen Lai clenched her fists, feeling as if something sharp had scraped her heart.
But it wasn’t surprising. If Pei Jingyan wasn’t worried about the baby, would he be worried about her?
Shen Lai pressed her lips together and didn’t insist further, “Then wait for me downstairs. I’ll just say goodbye to my mom and come down.”
Pei Jingyan glanced toward the hospital room and gave a low hum of acknowledgment.
Shen Lai returned to the room, informed her mother, and instructed the caregiver to take good care of her before leaving.
Just as she stepped out of the hospital, a tall figure blocked her path.
“Weren’t you supposed to wait in the car-”
The last word “me” died on her lips when she saw Huo Chilin standing before her.
Huo Chilin glanced toward the lobby, “I heard your mom is sick.”
Shen Lai’s expression turned cold, “What’s it to you?”
She tried to walk past him, but he blocked her again.
Huo Chilin’s face was tense, “We were together once. Isn’t it normal for me to care about your mom?”
“Don’t.” Shen Lai raised a hand mockingly, “Our family wouldn’t dare associate with Young Master Huo.”
Hearing the sarcasm, Huo Chilin’s jaw tightened, “Is there anything I can do to help? I’ll do my best.”
Shen Lai found it laughable. Back when her family was in trouble, Huo Chilin had rushed to break up with her. Now he was pretending to be concerned about her mom.
“Just say what you want to say. Stop beating around the bush.”
Bai Hansui had just been rebuffed by her yesterday, and now Huo Chilin was here. It wasn’t hard to guess the reason.
Huo Chilin clenched his fists slightly, “Don’t worry, I’m not here because of Bai Hansui.”
Shen Lai raised an eyebrow in surprise.
Huo Chilin continued, “What she did on the show was wrong. She framed you first, so it’s understandable if you retaliated.”
Shen Lai hadn’t expected Huo Chilin to be so reasonable for once. She said coldly, “Then why are you really here today?”
Gazing at Shen Lai’s flawless face, Huo Chilin swallowed hard. “I know you were with Pei Jingyan back then to help your family through tough times.”
Shen Lai’s brows twitched slightly as Huo Chilin continued, “I’ve already looked into it. Someone suddenly paid a huge medical bill for your mother half a month ago, and that was exactly when you signed with the entertainment company under the Pei Group.”
At this, Shen Lai lifted her eyes to meet Huo Chilin’s gaze.
Huo Chilin had actually investigated her?
Seeing Shen Lai remain silent, Huo Chilin knew he had guessed correctly. With an air of confidence, he magnanimously offered, “As long as you divorce Pei Jingyan, I can cover your mother’s medical expenses from now on and provide you with all the resources you need in the entertainment industry.”
