- Fake Pregnancy? Oops, It’s Real — and So Is the Husband
- Chapter 30 - Why Ask Me If Your Wife Is Missing?
The atmosphere between them instantly grew heavy, thick with tension.
Though Shen Lai had anticipated Pei Jingyan’s response, her chest still tightened as if squeezed by an invisible hand, leaving her inexplicably unsettled.
She had never expected Pei Jingyan to go easy on her.
Lifting her chin, Shen Lai forced a calm tone. “Don’t worry, I feel the same way.”
With that, she pushed Pei Jingyan away, breaking free from his embrace, and seized the chance to leave.
As she walked away, she cursed inwardly.
If not for the risk of her identity being exposed and leaving no one to take her place, she would’ve kicked Pei Jingyan out of the game long ago.
To heighten the suspense, the production team had deliberately kept the escape room dimly lit, making it hard to see even the path ahead.
Unsurprisingly, at a fork in the corridor, Huo Chilin and Bai Hansui got separated.
After calling Huo Chilin’s name several times with no response, Bai Hansui was about to retrace her steps when a sudden flashlight beam under her chin nearly made her shriek in fright.
Shen Lai, who had covered her ears in advance, quickly said, “It’s me.”
Bai Hansui steadied herself, recognizing Shen Lai, and finally relaxed. “Oh, it’s you?”
“I got separated from Pei Jingyan and thought you were him,” Shen Lai replied, glancing around before raising a brow. “Where’s Huo Chilin?”
“We got separated too.”
Shen Lai nodded, thinking—this is my chance.
The two walked in silence, one after the other. Perhaps wary after the director’s earlier remarks, Bai Hansui kept a close eye on Shen Lai’s movements.
Unfazed, Shen Lai pretended to search for the cross while casually asking, “You’re not the Big Bad Wolf, are you?”
Bai Hansui smiled faintly at her back. “I was just worried you might be.”
Shen Lai paused slightly and turned to face her. “If I were, Pei Jingyan would’ve been eliminated by now.”
Bai Hansui’s brows twitched. “Isn’t President Pei your husband? You’d really eliminate him?”
Shen Lai shrugged. “It’s just a game. Might as well take it seriously.”
Bai Hansui glanced subtly at the camera behind them and said, as if offhand, “But if I were the Big Bad Wolf, I could never bring myself to target Chilin.”
[Yeah, who in their right mind would target their own partner?]
[Guess Shen Lai doesn’t love Pei Jingyan that much after all.]
[Oh please, it’s a game. If you want romance, go play some couple’s challenge instead.]
[I’m with Shen Lai on this one. Judging love over a game? Ridiculous.]
Noticing Bai Hansui’s glance at the camera, Shen Lai raised a brow. “Oh? If you two are so close, why join a show meant to debunk rumors?”
Bai Hansui replied pointedly, “No choice. There’ve been too many baseless rumors about Chilin lately.”
As she spoke, she shot Shen Lai a meaningful look.
Shen Lai remained unfazed. “You mean the rumors about me and Huo Chilin? Those weren’t exactly false, were they?”
Bai Hansui’s expression faltered, her eyes darting nervously to the crew. Clearly, she hadn’t expected Shen Lai to say something like this on camera.
Not just Bai Hansui—even the live audience was stunned by Shen Lai’s sudden bombshell.
[What does Shen Lai mean by this? Could she have actually been with Young Master Huo before?]
[Isn’t it obvious what she means? Holy crap! So the rumors were true?]
[True my ass, Young Master Huo already denied it. Can Shen Lai have some shame? Is she trying to leech off him again?]
[I was just starting to like Shen Lai, and now she pulls this stunt. Unbelievable.]
Bai Hansui struggled to keep her expression under control. “Lai Lai, what do you mean by that?”
“Don’t you know exactly what I mean?” Shen Lai slowly stepped closer, deliberately lowering her voice. “Weren’t you our best friend back then? You knew perfectly well about my relationship with Huo Chilin.”
A cold sweat broke out on Bai Hansui’s back. Worried that Shen Lai might say something she shouldn’t, she was about to interrupt when she suddenly felt something heavy press against her forehead.
Shen Lai had taken advantage of her distraction and slapped the “Big Bad Wolf” sticker right onto Bai Hansui’s forehead.
Bai Hansui: “?”
The live-stream audience: “?”
At the same time, the loudspeaker in the escape room blared, “Bai Hansui has been eliminated!”
Shen Lai smiled faintly. “Sorry, I was just messing with you.”
[This plot twist came out of nowhere…]
[So everything Shen Lai just said was fake? She was just trying to catch Bai Hansui off guard?]
[Shen Lai’s move was genius! I almost believed her!]
[Ahhhhhhh Shen Lai is so sneaky! How could she trick our innocent Suisui like that? I can’t take it!]
[But Bai Hansui’s reaction was kinda weird, wasn’t it? Shouldn’t she know whether Huo Chilin and Shen Lai were together? Why would she be affected by something like that?]
[Do you know everything about your boyfriend’s past? Obviously, Suisui didn’t know, so she got scared when Shen Lai said that. Who knew Shen Lai was lying?]
Bai Hansui’s expression darkened.
Others might not know, but she was fully aware—that was why she had fallen for Shen Lai’s trick.
Who would’ve thought Shen Lai would bring up the past just to complete the mission?
Not far away, Huo Chilin had just found a silver cross when the announcement echoed overhead: “Bai Hansui has been eliminated!”
His expression shifted slightly. He quickly pocketed the cross and headed out to find Bai Hansui.
Just then, a figure suddenly appeared in front of him.
Seeing Pei Jingyan, Huo Chilin frowned slightly.
Pei Jingyan raised an eyebrow. “What a coincidence.”
Huo Chilin took a guarded step back. He still wasn’t sure if Pei Jingyan was the “Big Bad Wolf,” so he instinctively kept his distance.
Pei Jingyan, seemingly oblivious to his wariness, asked casually, “Young Master Huo, have you seen Shen Lai?”
Huo Chilin’s frown deepened. “Isn’t she your wife? Why are you asking me?”
A faint smirk tugged at Pei Jingyan’s lips. “She suspects I’m the Big Bad Wolf, so she ran off.”
Huo Chilin suddenly recalled the earlier announcement about Bai Hansui’s elimination, and his gaze toward Pei Jingyan turned wary.
Could Pei Jingyan be the Big Bad Wolf?
The thought made him worry about Shen Lai.
She must have discovered something to stay far away from Pei Jingyan.
Just then, Huo Chilin saw Pei Jingyan reach into his pocket. Instantly on high alert, he slowly retreated toward the door before turning and sprinting away.
If he and Pei Jingyan were to fight, there was no telling who would win.
He wasn’t about to take that risk.
After emerging from the secret chamber, Huo Chilin had only taken a few steps when she spotted a familiar figure in the dim light. Shen Lai was looking around, seemingly searching for something.
“Shen Lai.”
A familiar voice suddenly called from behind. Shen Lai turned to see Huo Chilin standing not far away.
She had been meaning to find this “Little Red Riding Hood,” and now the other party had come to her of their own accord.
