Fake Cannon Fodder A Becomes a Sensation in Romance Variety Shows - Chapter 68.2
Cheng Xiaoming propped herself up, and a flash of pale skin caught her eye.
Jiang Yining’s long hair was disheveled, a small red mark on her chest from the graze of a fake bullet.
Her back was turned to Cheng Xiaoming, her neck flushed as she trembled, fumbling to open the vanity drawer and pull out a slender syringe.
Cheng Xiaoming’s heart lurched. She grabbed Jiang Yining’s wrist just before the needle could pierce her gland.
“A suppressant?! Jiang Yining, what the hell are you doing? This stuff will necrotize your gland, destroy your fertility, and with repeated use, it could kill you!”
Suppressants weren’t inhibitors they directly paralyzed the gland, damaging its function. The risks were severe.
“Let go.”
Cheng Xiaoming didn’t release her. “You’re involved in something dangerous, aren’t you? Have you been using suppressants all along?”
“None of your damn business, let go!”
Cheng Xiaoming wrestled the syringe away and pulled her into an embrace.
“You risked your life to save me. I can’t let you hurt yourself.”
Jiang Yining closed her eyes, trembling violently in Cheng Xiaoming’s arms. “Don’t do this, Cheng Xiaoming.”
“I remember you said you hated me that was a lie, wasn’t it?”
Cheng Xiaoming’s chest rose and fell, her voice low. “If you don’t hate me then use me.”
“Just lightly. It’ll fade in less than a week.”
“If you don’t want to, I’ll leave right now.”
“I swear, no one else will ever know.”
The faint warm glow faded.
Clothes tumbled to the foot of the bed.
One only kissed the neck, barely tasting.
The other burned with ragged breaths, as if struggling through a summer storm.
–
Midnight, deep in the alley.
Several figures pressed against the wall, holding their breath.
After a long silence, the helmeted beta groped along the wall, peeked out, then ducked back and whispered, “They’re gone.”
Beside him, another beta gripped a machete, the kind used for chopping watermelons and cupped his mouth. “Move slowly. Can’t afford to slip up now.”
“Old Li, let’s go. My place is closest.”
“Got it.”
Old Li turned to the other side. “Boss Wen, how are you holding up?”
“I’m fine. Just a scratch.”
Wen Huiyun braced her arm, a slash ran along the outside, blood seeping through.
Ye Zhuoyan tore the fabric around the wound and wiped away the blood with a tissue.
Ye Zhuoyan asked, “Who were those people?”
Old Li patted her shoulder, shuffling forward like a duck. “Let’s talk somewhere safe first.”
Old Li and the helmeted beta led the way. Wen Huiyun kept an arm around Ye Zhuoyan, staying close behind them, while the machete-wielder and another alpha Old Li’s cousin brought up the rear.
The cousin, who ran a dog-breeding business in the area, had unleashed over a dozen fierce hounds in the chaos earlier, buying them time to escape.
Wen Huiyun asked guiltily, “What about your dogs?”
The cousin grinned. “Dogs are smart. They’ll follow the scent home. Those bastards won’t catch them.”
Old Li and the helmeted man led them through twists and turns in the old streets, allowing Wen Huiyun to finally see the full picture of the area.
It turned out that the old streets encircled one another, layer upon layer, concealing the darkest and most hidden part of City A, the old shantytown.
The old shantytown was a den of vice, where even the strongest outsider couldn’t overpower the local snakes. As long as the residents didn’t cause trouble beyond its borders, the community management turned a blind eye, preferring to avoid unnecessary complications.
Old Li sighed, “Once you enter the old shantytown, it’s every man for himself.”
The dog farm cousin added, “Yeah, street image renovations only tidy up the outermost areas. Who’d bother with the inside? Most people wouldn’t venture deep anyway.” He pointed in a direction, “My dog farm is over there.”
Wen Huiyun said, “Thank you both.”
For now, they took shelter in the basement of the helmeted man’s makeshift hotel.
The helmeted man said, “There’s a back door here too, so we can bolt if anything happens.”
Ye Zhuoyan held onto Wen Huiyun, not daring to turn on the lights and draw attention, so she used a small flashlight to check her injuries. “Do you have a first aid kit here?” she asked anxiously.
They shook their heads. Old Li said, “Use some alcohol to disinfect for now.”
“But that’ll hurt so much. Is there a pharmacy nearby?”
Old Li immediately cut her off, “No way. Those people will definitely track us here and stake out every pharmacy and clinic, just waiting for you to show up. Stay put for now.”
Wen Huiyun gently patted Ye Zhuoyan’s hand. “I’m fine, Yanyan.”
The helmeted man brought down a few bottles of liquor, telling Wen Huiyun to drink some first to dull the pain when cleaning the wounds.
Ye Zhuoyan gripped her tightly, tears glistening. “This is all my fault. If I hadn’t suggested going out to eat, none of this would’ve happened.”
Wen Huiyun stroked her hair tenderly. “How can this be your fault? If those people were really targeting me, they’d have found another opportunity even if nothing happened this time.”
Old Li thought for a moment and asked, “Boss Wen, Teacher Ye, have you offended some underground organization?”
Ye Zhuoyan looked bewildered. “No.”
And even the original Wen Huiyun wouldn’t have. Sure, the original was reckless, but she was a bully who preyed on the weak, she’d even been cornered by small-time thugs demanding protection money as a kid. She wouldn’t dare provoke real gangsters.
Wen Huiyun, however, remained silent.
The first thing that came to her mind was:
Jadeite City.
Wen Huiyun said, “We’ve been getting a lot of scam calls lately.”
The dog farm cousin asked, “A lot? What kind of scams?”
“Really clumsy ones.”
The cousin sighed. “Then it probably wasn’t a scam. They were likely confirming that the phone was on your person to track your location.”
Wen Huiyun looked at Ye Zhuoyan. “Yanyan.”
Ye Zhuoyan paused for a second before quickly pulling out her phone. Just as she was about to dismantle it, she said, “Let me call home first to let them know we’re safe.”
Wen Huiyun hurriedly said, “Use mine.”
“Alright.” Ye Zhuoyan decisively smashed her SIM card and phone.
Wen Huiyun turned to Old Li. “Sorry, but it looks like we need to move immediately.”
If there was any connection to Jadeite City, it would be through Wen Huiyun. So why was Ye Zhuoyan involved?
Unless—
Ke Yuxin.
Damn it!
Old Li said, “There’s a security patrol in the outer streets every morning. That’s the safest time, we’ll get you out then. Try to take the subway; it lowers the risk of a car accident or ambush. Make sure you leave this district and report to the police near the Provincial Procuratorate.”
Wen Huiyun and Ye Zhuoyan thanked them profusely.
Old Li chuckled, “It was nothing. We’re all in this together here, familiar faces. If anything happened to you, I wouldn’t be able to face Lanlan when I got home, you know?”
Wen Huiyun nodded, “Really, thank you.”
Once again, she saw the righteousness and courage of the city’s ordinary folk in people like Old Li.
Wen Huiyun and Ye Zhuoyan temporarily settled in the rented room of Old Li’s aunt.
Exhausted and terrified, Ye Zhuoyan was completely drained.
But her nerves were wound so tight she couldn’t sleep at all.
The room was cramped, damp and dark.
Complete with cockroaches and mice QwQ
Ye Zhuoyan curled up in Wen Huiyun’s arms.
“Huiyun, we got separated at Jieyou Restaurant. Do you think the other three are okay?”
“I called Gu Rufeng. She got home safe. I didn’t mention the stalkers.”
“Mmm, better not involve her when things are unclear. What about Ming-jie and Yining?”
Wen Huiyun paused, her voice lowering, “Couldn’t get through. Their phones are off.”
Ye Zhuoyan’s heart skipped a beat, “They couldn’t have gotten hurt, could they?”
Remembering the heart-stopping chase five or six alphas surrounding them, getting handsy, if Old Li hadn’t come with help, they’d have been done for.
“No.”
Wen Huiyun was adamant.
In her eyes, the old tungsten bulb flickered faintly.
That old fox Jiang Yining wouldn’t be in trouble. She’d probably destroyed her phone after noticing the tracking.
Ye Zhuoyan remained unsettled, clinging to Wen Huiyun like a little koala.
“Don’t worry, we’ll get out of here tomorrow morning. Let me hold you, try to sleep a little, okay? Yanyan?”
Ye Zhuoyan pressed her nose against Wen Huiyun’s neck, needing her scent to feel safe, and nodded.
Silence.
So cold.
Gradually, Ye Zhuoyan began sobbing intermittently.
Thinking she was scared again, Wen Huiyun held her tighter, kissing the top of her head and murmuring, “Don’t be scared, Yanyan. I’m here. We’ll be safe by morning.”
Ye Zhuoyan cried harder, hugging her back.
“Wuwu, cough! You took a knife for me.”
She clung tighter, repeating, “You took a knife for me.”
Ah!
Wen Huiyun kissed her lips.
It’s just a small wound, Yanyan.
