- Chapter 68.1 - Palpitations
A fierce wind rushed past.
Blood splattered onto Cheng Xiaoming’s face, dyeing her vision red.
It took her two seconds to realize, it wasn’t her blood.
In front of her, the necks of two alphas had been torn open, their glands flung out amidst the gore.
A bloodstained dagger flashed by, its owner clad in combat gear, a half-face mask secured over her ears.
Around her neck was a rigid protective collar, gleaming coldly under the moonlight.
Cheng Xiaoming was stunned: An omega.
In that moment of distraction, a burly man hooked his thick arm around the omega’s neck, while two alphas closed in from either side, pinning her arms.
A female alpha stepped out from the shadows, a tattoo stretching across her shoulder. “Well, well. Spicy. I like it. How about we inspect the goods right here?”
Two more alphas followed behind the short-haired woman.
“Right in front of your girlfriend, how about that?”
“My people have been staking you out for so long, and just when we finally had a chance, you slipped away.”
“Luckily, your girlfriend hadn’t gone far. I thought I’d just wait for the alpha to lure the omega back. Didn’t expect you to be so devoted, huh? Even after getting stabbed, you still came back to save her. Adorable.”
Cheng Xiaoming’s mind reeled at the female alpha’s words.
What girlfriend?
She had been celebrating the Little New Year at Jieyou Eatery earlier. Jiang Yining and Gu Rufeng had left first, and Cheng Xiaoming had waited a while before heading out. Jiang Yining had actually stayed outside the door the whole time?
Seeing how dark it was, Cheng Xiaoming had asked if Jiang Yining needed an escort, but she had declined, and they’d gone their separate ways.
Now, Cheng Xiaoming’s head and abdomen throbbed in unison. Did these thugs mistake Jiang Yining for my girlfriend?
Then who is this omega?!
The female alpha reached for the omega’s mask.
The omega’s lips moved. “Yu Jie.”
A-Jie froze, disbelief flashing across her face. “Who the hell are you?!”
The omega smirked, then suddenly swung her leg high, a blade snapped out from her heel, slicing open the arm of the man restraining her and carving out his gland. At the same time, she drove spiked brass knuckles into the necks of the two alphas flanking her. Alpha mental energy was tricky, so the first rule of fighting them was to destroy their glands.
She leaped to Cheng Xiaoming’s side in one fluid motion, gripping her shoulder and whispering urgently, “Can you still run?”
Cheng Xiaoming panted heavily. “I can still take down one more.”
“Then come with me.”
For a split second, Cheng Xiaoming hesitated not out of doubt, but from the dizziness of blood loss.
The omega lifted her half-mask, revealing her face. “Move.”
Cheng Xiaoming’s eyes widened, then curved into a smile, blood trickling from the corner of her lips. “So it is you.”
Jiang Yining.
And those peach-blossom eyes of hers, usually so languid, were now icy and lethal like a beast thirsting for blood.
Leaning against Jiang Yining’s side, Cheng Xiaoming clutched her wound as Jiang Yining wrapped an arm around her waist and hurried forward.
“You crippled so many of my men and think you can just walk away unscathed?”
Click. The sound of a bullet being chambered.
A-Jie narrowed her eyes, raising her arm, the barrel of the gun steady.
The dark muzzle pointed straight at Jiang Yining.
“Only the kids from my batch in the Florence Division know my real name. And unfortunately for you, every single one of them except me is dead.”
“Who are you?”
“You’ve got three seconds. Or one of you alpha or omegagets a bullet in the skull.”
The trigger clicked.
Jiang Yining turned around, but Cheng Xiaoming’s body moved before her mind could react, stepping directly in front of her.
“Get lost!”
Jiang Yining erupted in fury, kicking Cheng Xiaoming away.
Cheng Xiaoming fell to the ground, pain reverberating through her entire body. She no longer had the energy to think, only managing to cast a pained glance at Jiang Yining. What was wrong with this woman? She had been trying to save her, yet Jiang Yining kicked her so hard?
Jiang Yining could have dodged that bullet. If Cheng Xiaoming hadn’t recklessly thrown herself into danger.
The bullet grazed Jiang Yining’s chest, exploding and releasing a seductive gas.
Jiang Yining immediately covered her mouth and nose, shouting at Cheng Xiaoming, “Don’t breathe!”
A-Jie sneered, “Well, well, quick reflexes. Real guns aren’t so easy to come by in this country. I wouldn’t even waste one on an omega mercenary.”
“Oh really?”
Jiang Yining smirked, pulling a silver gun from her coat and raising it, aiming straight at A-Jie’s heart.
“Would you like to know if mine’s real?”
A-Jie stared at the gun, her expression darkening.
An alpha charged forward, shouting, “Sis Jie, don’t be scared! She’s bluffing!”
A-Jie yelled, “A-Wang, don’t move!”
Bang!
The bullet tore into the man’s leg and exploded.
Jiang Yining scooped up Cheng Xiaoming, gun still trained on A-Jie, her earlier composure gone. Her eyes were bloodshot, like a frenzied beast:
“Anyone who dares move, I’ll fucking shoot them dead!”
No one dared to move.
Jiang Yining fed Cheng Xiaoming painkillers, tore off her T-shirt to bandage her abdomen, and helped her vanish into the darkness.
“Sis Jie, are we just letting her escape?! We finally tracked down a prime target!”
“She won’t get away that easily. She’s been hit with an inducer without an alpha’s pheromones, she’ll die of thirst. Send people to follow them. And contact the Emerald Cabinet ask if any other underground factions have operatives in Z Country.”
The blood wouldn’t stop flowing.
Cheng Xiaoming felt like she was fading.
Ever since she was a child, her father had assigned bodyguards to follow her. She used to complain, saying, Where would assassins even come from?
Now she believed it.
Her brain and glands had been assaulted by multiple alphas simultaneously. It felt like countless fireballs were colliding inside her, about to tear her apart.
So dizzy.
So tired.
“Cheng Xiaoming, you can’t sleep.”
“Cheng Xiaoming. Cheng Xiaoming. Cheng Xiaoming!”
“Cheng Xiaoming, look at me!”
Cheng Xiaoming’s consciousness blurred, but she saw Jiang Yining’s face.
Delicate brows, a straight nose, red lips exceptionally beautiful.
Her peach-blossom eyes seemed to speak.
Saying,
Strong liquor? Trying to get me drunk, CEO Cheng?
And the hum of an airplane.
This face, it felt familiar.
Cheng Xiaoming frowned, lifting a bloodstained hand to touch it.
“Have we met a long time ago?”
Jiang Yining stiffened, then took a deep breath and slapped Cheng Xiaoming’s cheek. “You’re delirious. Don’t you dare fall asleep stay awake. I’m taking you somewhere safe to treat your injuries.”
She supported her as they staggered forward.
“You kicked me.”
“Yeah.”
“Why did you kick me?”
“Because you’re an idiot.”
“Cough! I, I was trying to save you, why?”
I was saving you.”
“But that bullet,”
“Shut up. Mention the bullet again, and I’ll kick you once more.”
“…”
“Cheng Xiaoming, don’t sleep.”
“Mm. I’m not. It hurts so much. Is this embarrassing for an alpha?”
“No. I know it really hurts.”
“Why are you here? I thought you hated me.”
“I do. I was lying.”
“What else have you lied to me about?”
“A lot.”
“Then can you promise not to lie to me in the future?”
“Let me think about it.”
“I need to think too. I should make a will and leave half my assets to you. My lifesaver.”
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
“Hmm… Jiang Yining.”
“?”
“You’re so beautiful.”
“Shut up.”
–
Another long dream, but I remember nothing.
Cheng Xiaoming slowly opened her eyes to a dim, warm glow.
Surprisingly, her wound didn’t hurt anymore. She lifted the blanket her abdomen was carefully bandaged. The faint scent of soap lingered on her skin, as if she’d been wiped clean.
The air was thick with the intoxicating aroma of rose wine, enough to make one drunk.
An omega’s pheromones.
