- Chapter 29 - Pairing
Ye Zhuoyan let out a soft whimper as the force of Wen Huiyun’s movement sent her stumbling backward. Wen Huiyun quickly wrapped an arm around her waist to steady her.
With a gentle tug, she pulled Ye Zhuoyan into her embrace.
Ye Zhuoyan swayed slightly before finding her footing in Wen Huiyun’s arms. Her hands rested on Wen Huiyun’s shoulders as she gazed up with startled, glistening eyes.
Wen Huiyun found herself lost in those crystalline orbs, holding her breath. Suddenly realizing she’d been holding the other woman for too long, an impropriety she hastily released her and murmured, “I’m sorry.”
Ye Zhuoyan turned away, murmuring softly, “It’s fine.”
The scent of vanilla cotton candy grew stronger, its soft sweetness drifting into Wen Huiyun’s nostrils.
A knock sounded at the door.
The producer hurried in. “Huiyun, are you alright now? Any discomfort?”
“I’m fine, thank you,” Wen Huiyun replied.
“You should really thank Zhuoyan,” the producer said. “She volunteered to stay and care for you. And Liang Yuan too, she performed first aid.”
Wen Huiyun and Ye Zhuoyan exchanged a glance, sharing a brief smile before quickly looking away.
The producer advised Wen Huiyun to rest for a few more days despite no serious issues, mentioning the production would delay filming.
“Understood. Thank you for your concern,” Wen Huiyun nodded.
All guests waited in the hotel’s executive lounge to return to Lianlian Manor together.
Walking down the plush carpeted hallway, Wen Huiyun’s steps triggered the motion-activated wall lights.
Voices carried before she entered.
“Blame me? Fine, my float did accidentally hit Yunyun, but who started arguing in the first place? I feel worse than anyone about her getting hurt.”
“It was me. I’m not blaming you.”
“You’d better not be. Don’t look at me like I owe you a fortune. You didn’t win, I didn’t lose.”
“Was the final result debatable? Who was riding whom out of the wave pool?”
Wen Huiyun’s ears rang, those two were at it again.
“I didn’t even complain about you taking liberties.”
“Let’s not discuss this further.”
As Wen Huiyun entered, all eyes turned to her.
Cheng Xiaoming stood. “You’re awake. Does your head still hurt?”
“Not at all. Thank you for your concern,” Wen Huiyun replied politely.
Jiang Yining rushed to hug her from the side. “Yunyun, I’m so sorry! It was an accident, I already deflated the dolphin float! QAQ”
Wen Huiyun deftly sidestepped. “No worries, it was unexpected. Nobody could have predicted it.”
Jiang Yining nearly stumbled into Cheng Xiaoming, who stiffly caught her.
Mi Tao offered Wen Huiyun a freshly peeled orange segment. Accepting it, Wen Huiyun thanked Liang Yuan beside her.
Liang Yuan smiled warmly. “You’re too polite, Huiyun. Let me know if you feel unwell. I’ve prepared an herbal prescription to clear your mind, we’ll stop by the pharmacy later.”
“My deepest thanks.”
Scanning the lounge, Wen Huiyun noted only five people present including herself.
“Where’s Zhuoyan?”
Mi Tao pointed toward the balcony behind the bar. “Sister Zhuoyan’s outside on a call.”
“Oh!”
Liang Yuan gently nudged Wen Huiyun, signaling her to lean closer.
As Wen Huiyun sat beside her, Liang Yuan whispered, “Zhuoyan was terribly worried after you fainted. Xiaoming offered to care for you first, but Zhuoyan insisted she’d be more attentive. She stayed by your side for two full hours.”
A warm feeling rose in Wen Huiyun’s heart. Though Ye Zhuoyan appeared cold and indifferent toward her, she clearly cared deep down.
Liang Yuan lowered her voice, “Are you two about to get together? How’d you manage that? Zhuoyan didn’t seem too interested in you before.”
Wen Huiyun laughed awkwardly, “Haha, is it that obvious? Maybe it’s my cooking skills. You know what they say, the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach.”
Liang Yuan gave a knowing smile. “I see.”
Mi Tao tilted her head, “But Yuanyuan-jie, you said the real way to someone’s heart is through pleasuring their body, mmph!”
Before she could finish, Liang Yuan covered her mouth.
Wen Huiyun felt she’d stumbled upon something she shouldn’t have known. Too afraid to ask, she decided to pretend she hadn’t heard anything.
Ye Zhuoyan walked in just as Wen Huiyun turned to look at her. With a slight nod, their lips bore matching shades of lipstick.
Remembering their intimate moments in the guest room, Wen Huiyun’s heart swelled with warmth.
Yes, let’s get along well.
Back at the Love Manor, Wen Huiyun took a relaxing hot shower and organized the pheromones and suppressants hidden in her closet.
She took out a notebook to diagram the memories she’d collected recently. On one page, she wrote “Original Host” and filled it with diamond shapes and arrows. After some thought, she started another page titled “Female Lead.”
She’d accumulated many of the original host’s memories, but only had fragments of Ye Zhuoyan’s mainly the schoolyard argument with the blonde girl.
Closing her eyes in deep thought, Wen Huiyun still couldn’t recall the blonde girl’s name.
Perhaps the original host had discovered the truth about her white moonlight before death, and the grief had locked away those memories. Since the original host’s death and the dark organization’s information were tied to this toxic white moonlight, Wen Huiyun reasoned she could find clues among the original host’s classmates and friends.
Best not to let Ye Zhuoyan know about this, she didn’t want to drag her into it.
AI announcement: “Wen Huiyun, please open your door.”
Why would the production team have arrangements at 10 pm?
It was the director.
“Good evening, Huiyun. Sorry to bother you, but we need you to play a little game.”
Wen Huiyun noticed the leather box in his hands, about the size of a mooncake box.
Opening it revealed several lipstick tubes. She immediately recognized the caramel tea shade Ye Zhuoyan had applied on her.
“What’s this?”
“Please place the lipstick you choose on the card of the guest you think it belongs to.”
Ah, so they had to match lipsticks to their owners.
This would be easy, whatever the production team was planning, she was guaranteed to win.
After all, Ye Zhuoyan had personally applied that lipstick on her .
The crystal tube of caramel tea went on Ye Zhuoyan’s card.
Mi Tao usually preferred orange tones or natural nudes, so the peach grapefruit with cartoon packaging must be hers.
That left Jiang Yining.
With her ever-changing makeup style, Jiang Yining could pull off any color. The box contained several unconventional shades that would suit her perfectly.
No omega would actually use that barbie pink probably just a decoy.
She chose the sparkling mermaid gold, Jiang Yining loved anything shiny.
“I’ve made my choice. Director, is this selection part of the new activity draw?”
The director grinned mischievously: “That’s a secret.”
In the adjacent double room.
“Lipsticks?”
Cheng Xiaoming stared blankly at the assortment of tubes in the box.
“Me first?”
Liang Yuan gestured for him to proceed, turning her back to avoid watching.
Cheng Xiaoming reached for a lipstick.
The deathly Barbie pink landed on Jiang Yining’s card.
With confident smile and no suspense whatsoever!
It was over quickly.
The assistant director, looking at Cheng Xiaoming’s answer, struggled to control her widening grin, barely suppressing her amusement. She couldn’t help but marvel inwardly: Truly a successor candidate groomed by top-tier elite families dominated by alphas. Though they might dominate in business and politics, they’re completely clueless about cosmetics (the assistant director shook her head).
Cheng Xiaoming sat calmly on the sofa playing Tetris.
“Your turn, Sister Liang.”
Liang Yuan hesitated at the sight of so many lipsticks.
She said to Cheng Xiaoming: “I didn’t expect you to be so observant about lipsticks you don’t even use, remembering all their shades and choosing so quickly.”
Cheng Xiaoming smiled without replying.
It wasn’t observation, just accurate deduction. A person’s character determines what shade they’d prefer.
Meanwhile in the omega living area.
“Yanyan, did the assistant director take your lipsticks too?”
“Yeah, yours too?”
Jiang Yining opened her makeup case, “I still have dozens here. The assistant director said it was too many and only took five.”
Mi Tao jumped in from the doorway, hugging Jiang Yining excitedly: “Yining, you’re my savior! Let me borrow this one, this one, and this one!”
Jiang Yining generously handed them over, “If you don’t mind they’re used, you can have them!”
“Yay!”
Ye Zhuoyan also came over to look, a dazzling array of every possible shade, even black, green, and blue.
Ye Zhuoyan asked, “What do you think the assistant director wants our lipsticks for?”
Mi Tao tilted her head, “Good question. Maybe it’s related to the activity? Oh, I still have one lipstick Sister Yuanyuan gave me! She made it herself!”
Jiang Yining poked her head, “Stop showing off your relationship.”
Mi Tao giggled happily, “Hehe~”
Ye Zhuoyan thought if they were using lipsticks to pair up for the draw, she’d definitely be matched with Wen Huiyun.
Memories of the hotel room surfaced, the soft touch of those red lips beneath her ring finger seemed to linger on her skin, the faint rustling sound as she rubbed them left and right.
Her breathing unconsciously grew warmer.
“I saw a deathly Barbie pink in the assistant director’s box. Is it yours?”
“An artist of my caliber would never use Barbie pink! Though alphas pursuing me keep sending them, I block every single one.”
“Then it can’t be Sister Yanyan’s, right? Sister Yanyan!”
The next day, the AI broadcast announced the start of the fourth activity.
“Now announcing the rules for the fourth activity.”
“Alpha and omega guests will pair up and go to different locations to purchase soft furnishings and appliances to renovate their love nests.”
“‘Through time’s changes, there will be gold to love you in her/his stead.’ This shopping fund is sponsored by ‘Gulin Jewelry.’ Thank you, Gulin Jewelry.”
Wen Huiyun’s expression turned peculiar. Had she just heard… the sponsor’s advertisement?
This wasn’t in the original novel either.
Though Gulin Jewelry was mentioned once in the original the Gu family was a top-tier elite family on par with the Chengs, along with the Su family. The three surnames Cheng, Gu, and Su practically controlled the entire A City.
Cheng Xiaoming’s face tensed.
Could her Cheng family not afford a mere dating show?
Cheng Wenbo actually went to the Gu family for sponsorship and used such tacky ad slogans, did he even get her permission?
AI broadcast: “We have prepared six sedans to transport the guests to their destinations.”
“The grouping for this activity was determined by last night’s choices from the alpha guests.”
“Please head to the destination to find out who your partner is Gogogo!!!”
Shun Ning Yi Gou Building.
Wen Hui bought two cups of hot milk and sat quietly by the entrance, waiting.
A black sedan pulled up, and as the door opened, Wen Hui looked up with a smile. A red loafer stepped out, followed by a fair calf wrapped in white bubble socks.
