- Chapter 28 - Color Code
Wen Huiyun slowly opened her eyes, still slightly groggy. She waited quietly for two seconds until her bleary vision cleared a little.
Ye Zhuoyan lay against her chest like a soft little animal, forehead touching forehead, their noses almost brushing.
“Haa… haa…”
Ye Zhuoyan’s gentle breaths drifted into Wen Huiyun’s ears.
Wen Huiyun’s lashes fluttered unnaturally as she averted her gaze from Ye Zhuoyan’s flushed cheeks. But then she caught sight of the snowy glimpse of skin peeking from the loose collar of her clothes and immediately looked away.
Her eyes burned as if scalded, the heat spreading to her own cheeks.
A mix of delight and bashfulness flickered in Ye Zhuoyan’s eyes as she murmured, “You’re awake?”
Wen Huiyun swallowed, her voice slightly hoarse. “Mhm, I’m awake. I heard all the whispers you said to me, you won’t go back on your word, will you?”
Ye Zhuoyan blinked like a confused fawn. “Go back on what?”
Wen Huiyun’s arms were still wrapped around her, holding her lightly. Suppressing her racing heartbeat, she slowly tightened her embrace, pulling Ye Zhuoyan closer, then closer still.
“You… don’t dislike this kind of response?”
Wen Huiyun tilted her head, resting it near Ye Zhuoyan’s ear as she whispered.
Her tender words were like a feather teasing Ye Zhuoyan’s delicate ear brushing over the shell, the hollow, the lobe each touch sending tingling shivers across her skin.
Ye Zhuoyan’s soft body trembled faintly in Wen Huiyun’s arms, her dewy eyes shimmering with emotion.
“Mmm.”
She turned her face, pressing it against Wen Huiyun’s chest without another word.
Wen Huiyun lifted her chin slightly, shifting her angle, and caught sight of Ye Zhuoyan’s secretly curved lips. But as if sensing her gaze, the hint of a smile vanished instantly.
Breathing in Ye Zhuoyan’s scent, Wen Huiyun lost herself in the soft, sweet warmth.
She thought, there couldn’t possibly be a sweeter, lovelier omega in the world than Ye Zhuoyan.
Then her mind drifted to the memories she’d recovered while unconscious.
The echoes of those two slaps still rang in her ears.
Now, with Ye Zhuoyan right beside her, Wen Huiyun felt a deep pang of remorse.
“Zhuoyan… can I touch your cheek?”
Ye Zhuoyan blinked in confusion. “Why?”
Wen Huiyun smiled apologetically. “I dreamed of some… unpleasant things from before. I’m scared.”
She didn’t dare say more, afraid that bringing up those awful memories would upset Ye Zhuoyan.
She was terrified that Ye Zhuoyan’s cheeks might still hurt.
Even though it had been over two years, to Wen Huiyun, it felt like it had happened just a second ago.
Ye Zhuoyan studied her, a faint glimmer passing through her eyes as if she, too, had remembered something then nodded.
Wen Huiyun’s expression softened as she gently cupped her cheek.
So tender. So smooth. So flawless.
Not even cloud-like soufflés could compare to Ye Zhuoyan’s softness, nor could the silkiest milk pudding rival her delicate suppleness.
Her gaze grew intoxicated, lingering with affection not just her arms embracing Ye Zhuoyan’s slender waist, but her eyes enveloping her just as tightly.
Still unaccustomed to such intimacy, Ye Zhuoyan instinctively gave a small push against Wen Huiyun.
Wen Huiyun hastily withdrew her hand. “S-Sorry! You’re just too, uh, I mean, I didn’t!”
Help, why did my tongue have to tie up at the worst moment?! QAQ
She instinctively placed her hand on Ye Zhuoyan’s waist, then suddenly remembered it was inappropriate and hastily withdrew it, leaving it awkwardly suspended in mid-air nowhere seemed right to put it.
Wen Huiyun flushed with embarrassment.
Like a ripe cherry tomato.
Plump and rosy, glistening with moisture.
She looked positively biteable.
Ye Zhuoyan took in her flustered state, barely suppressing a laugh.
“I’ve never seen an alpha as easily flustered as you.”
Then, she added, “You weren’t like this before.”
“Well, now you’ve seen it. And I’ll probably stay this way, please be patient with me.”
Wen Huiyun buried her face in the pillow.
What else could she do?
After over two decades of being single, both in fiction and reality, this was her first time being so close to her crush. If her face didn’t burn and her heart didn’t race, would she even be emotionally functional?
Ye Zhuoyan pushed herself up from the bed and returned to the chair beside it.
Noticing the faint tear stains at the corners of Wen Huiyun’s eyes, she took a damp tissue from the nightstand and gently wiped them away.
Wen Huiyun recognized the cool touch on her skin, it was the same sensation she’d felt while unconscious. Ye Zhuoyan had been tending to her, drying her tears all along.
Her lashes lowered as Ye Zhuoyan’s delicate fingers brushed lightly beneath her eyelids.
“Thank you.”
Ye Zhuoyan replied, “No need to be so formal with me. A lot of unpleasantness has happened between us, but I know where to draw the line.”
Wen Huiyun sat up stiffly, carefully dissecting the meaning behind those words.
Was Ye Zhuoyan resentful? Was she about to reprimand her?
Wen Huiyun’s heart lurched was this leading to a divorce?!
Ye Zhuoyan tossed the used tissue into the trash. “Since you returned after going missing, I’ve been watching your every word and action.”
She sat back down beside Wen Huiyun, her expression softening.
“Wen Huiyun, let’s get along well from now on.”
Wen Huiyun nodded eagerly. “Yes! I’ll turn over a new leaf, work hard, be thrifty, and strive for success ^o^”
Phew. False alarm.
Her heart wept with relief, her wife was safe, and so was her life.
For now, at least.
Though challenges surely lay ahead, this was already a tremendous encouragement.
Ye Zhuoyan checked the time. “You were out for two hours. I asked Sister Liang to examine you since there were no health concerns, I didn’t call the on-set doctor. The production team arranged this hotel room for you to rest. But if you hadn’t woken up within the hour, we’d have taken you to the hospital.”
“……”
Wen Huiyun broke into a cold sweat internally. Thank goodness Ye Zhuoyan had asked Liang Yuan to help. If she’d been sent for a full medical checkup, her undifferentiated secondary gender would’ve been exposed.
“Here, drink some water.”
Ye Zhuoyan first moistened Wen Huiyun’s parched lips with a cotton swab dipped in water, then handed her a cup of glucose solution.
As she watched Wen Huiyun sip slowly, she asked, “You were crying while unconscious. Would you tell me why?”
Wen Huiyun clutched the cup. “Mmm… well.”
She lowered her head, sorting through the fragmented memories in her mind before selectively sharing them with Ye Zhuoyan.
She gave a rough account of the original host’s disappearance but omitted details about Jade City and the letter since she didn’t fully understand those events herself, it was safer to say less.
Her retelling was disjointed, and Ye Zhuoyan’s brows gradually furrowed as she listened, only grasping fragments, flickering green lights, the scent of disinfectant, and the like.
“Your memory is gradually recovering. I believe you’ll soon recall the whole story. Uncle Wen and Auntie have been very concerned about this matter, calling me frequently to ask about your condition. They’re hoping you can provide clues to the Criminal Investigation Division once you’re better.”
Wen Huiyun nodded slightly. The original host’s murder was an extremely vicious crime. Such a dark organization posed a danger to everyone as long as it existed. Once she gathered more memories, she would ensure they were brought to justice promptly.
She needed to hurry.
The original host had died in Jade City something Wen Huiyun hadn’t known when she boldly appeared on the variety show…
Just imagine, how could someone who’d been dismembered still appear lively and intact on the big screen?
Wen Huiyun shuddered, she knew the secrets of Jade City’s underground dealings and contraband trade, which meant she might already be on their radar.
“Huiyun? You suddenly look very pale.”
Wen Huiyun snapped out of her thoughts, her back covered in a fine layer of cold sweat.
“It’s nothing, just spaced out for a moment.”
Ye Zhuoyan handed her a small mirror. Wen Huiyun saw her reflection pale face, lips slightly darkened.
A sudden thought struck her: what if the director noticed her poor complexion and insisted she go to the hospital? That wouldn’t do.
Wen Huiyun looked around.
“What do you need? I’ll get it for you.”
“My bag.”
Ye Zhuoyan handed her the bag, eyes filled with curiosity.
Wen Huiyun rummaged through it, sighed, and set it aside.
“What’s wrong?”
“I didn’t bring any lipstick.”
Ye Zhuoyan studied her for two seconds before opening her elegant white clutch, its clasp adorned with dangling pink tassels.
She produced a crystal tube of lipstick with a tiny mirror on one end, gently twisting off the cap to reveal a caramel tea-colored bullet.
“Shall I help you?”
Wen Huiyun’s expression turned surprised, then delighted as she leaned toward Ye Zhuoyan, parting her lips slightly.
Ye Zhuoyan cradled her chin with one hand, deft fingers applying the lipstick evenly to Wen Huiyun’s lips.
One stroke, then another.
The bullet rasped softly against her lips. Wen Huiyun kept her gaze lowered, following the movement of Ye Zhuoyan’s fingers.
The hand supporting her chin occasionally brushed against her cheeks with featherlight touches that tickled.
Ye Zhuoyan’s long lashes cast shadows as she focused, her serene beauty captivating.
After coloring both lips, she extended her ring finger, using its warmth to blend the lipstick, gently smudging it left and right.
While softly working the color into Wen Huiyun’s lips, she murmured,
“Caramel tea, I’m giving you my shade.”
Wen Huiyun’s eyes curved, a muffled “Mhm!” escaping her throat.
She glimpsed the lipstick in Ye Zhuoyan’s hand, imagining how each morning the bullet would glide over Ye Zhuoyan’s full lips.
And just now, that same bullet had transferred from Ye Zhuoyan’s lips to hers.
Caramel tea.
Wen Huiyun committed the shade to memory.
It suited Ye Zhuoyan perfectly.
After getting out of bed and organizing her things, Wen Huiyun combed her hair and asked, “By the way, who won between Cheng Xiaoming and Yi Ning?”
Ye Zhuoyan actually burst out laughing. “They couldn’t even tell themselves.”
“How could they not know?”
Wen Huiyun felt like the universe’s biggest fool, getting hit by a pool ring with the perpetrators unable to determine the outcome.
Ye Zhuoyan texted the director to report she was fine, then looked up to answer, “Jiang Yining rode out on Cheng Xiaoming’s back.”
“?”
Wen Huiyun’s expression became a living question mark.
“Because the waves swept away Yining’s float and carried her right onto Cheng Xiaoming’s shoulders.”
“……”
Though absurd, such incidents were all too common in the wave pool.
Before Wen Huiyun transmigrated into the book, she’d even seen people ride in on whale floaties only to emerge clinging to elderly men, the more crowded it got, the crazier things became.
Wen Huiyun pulled on her hoodie and shook out the hair trapped beneath the collar. “They’re fighting again, aren’t they?”
“Yeah.”
Ye Zhuoyan stepped behind her to flip out the hood that had gotten tucked inside.
“I really don’t understand Cheng Xiaoming, why does she always have to compete with Jiang Yining.”
Unaware that Ye Zhuoyan stood so close, Wen Huiyun suddenly turned around and collided with the soft warmth of her embrace.
“Mmph!”
