- Chapter 10 - Formidable Opponent
Ye Zhuoyan furrowed her delicate brows, gazing at Wen Huiyun for a moment as her reproachful look gradually softened into concern. She reached out to pull her up. “Come here.”
Wen Huiyun grasped Ye Zhuoyan’s hand, her smile brightening further, the dimples on her cheeks sweet enough to brew honey.
Ye Zhuoyan took out a wet wipe and carefully dabbed at the water droplets on Wen Huiyun’s face.
This was the first time Wen Huiyun had been so close to Ye Zhuoyan face-to-face.
Ye Zhuoyan’s movements were gentle, the cool damp cloth lightly brushing against Wen Huiyun’s cheeks.
Up close, Ye Zhuoyan’s skin appeared even more flawless than from afar, smoother than the most perfect meringue Wen Huiyun had ever seen.
The soft fragrance of vanilla cotton candy drifted through the air, teasing Wen Huiyun’s nose and heartstrings like a feather.
At this moment, Wen Huiyun felt enveloped by a sweet cloud, everything around her fragrant and soft.
She had received the reward she desired Ye Zhuoyan’s tenderness.
Ye Zhuoyan began to take off her coat to drape over Wen Huiyun, but Wen Huiyun quickly dodged, insisting she put it back on. “It’s autumn, and the weather’s cold. I have a strong immune system, but you mustn’t catch a chill.”
An alpha’s physique was far sturdier than an omega’s; catching a cold wasn’t easy for her.
Reluctantly, Ye Zhuoyan put her coat back on, her expression still worried. “But you’re completely drenched.”
Wen Huiyun laughed heartily. “It’s fine. I have spare clothes on the bus. I’ll go change into them.”
Ye Zhuoyan remained uneasy. “Go now, I—”
Before she could finish, the mother cat, carrying the rescued kitten, rubbed against her ankle with a soft “Meow~”
The kitten had been saved but showed no signs of life. Ye Zhuoyan checked its condition and sighed helplessly.
It was beyond saving.
Seeing Ye Zhuoyan’s brows knit together, Wen Huiyun’s heart clenched in sympathy.
What’s gone couldn’t be brought back. She comforted Ye Zhuoyan, “If you like cats, we can adopt one at home.”
Wen Huiyun recalled there were no pets at home.
She wasn’t particularly fond of cats or dogs, but she didn’t dislike them either. If Ye Zhuoyan wanted some, they could have a few.
Ye Zhuoyan suddenly looked up at her, her expression one of shock. “What did you say?”
This… Was Ye Zhuoyan angry at her response?
Wen Huiyun closed her mouth, wondering if she had misspoken.
She softened her voice, careful not to upset Ye Zhuoyan further. “Whatever you like, however you arrange things, it’s all your choice. Your wishes come first.”
Ye Zhuoyan lowered her head without a word.
She picked up fallen leaves to cover the kitten’s tiny body. The mother cat licked her kitten, circling around it, unwilling to leave.
Wen Huiyun stood quietly, watching as Ye Zhuoyan buried the poor little life.
Ye Zhuoyan turned to her. “Go change your clothes. The competition isn’t over yet, and I’ve already delayed you too long. As for what happened earlier… I’ll make it up to you later.”
A faint light glimmered in Wen Huiyun’s eyes. “There’s no need to make it up. Helping you is what I should do.”
There was another half to that sentence she left unspoken. Helping her was what she should do because she was her wife.
“Zhuoyan, remember to use the photos I sent you to exchange for the prop cards.”
Ye Zhuoyan refused firmly. “I won’t use your clues. It’s against the show’s rules and my principles.”
“Wen Huiyun, if your phone is broken, go get a replacement from the production team immediately.”
“Let me say this again, this show is very important to me. Every event, every competition matters. I don’t need your help. All I ask is that you don’t interfere with my affairs.”
Ye Zhuoyan spoke these words to Wen Huiyun with absolute conviction, leaving no room for argument.
She couldn’t understand what game Wen Huiyun was playing this time.
Wen Huiyun had a severe cat allergy, how could she possibly allow her to keep a cat at home?
What if Wen Huiyun was just waiting for her to bring the cat home before going back on her word, or worse, harming it?
That wasn’t impossible.
Once, after visiting Ye Qimeng and playing with her cats, Ye Zhuoyan hadn’t cleaned off all the fur before returning. When Wen Huiyun saw it, she sneezed three times in a row, burned her clothes, and even whipped her with a belt.
Wen Huiyun had threatened: If I ever see those filthy creatures in my house, I’ll throw them off the 30th floor!
The memory of that violent outburst still haunted Ye Zhuoyan.
After much thought, she concluded that Wen Huiyun’s recent behavior could only be explained in two ways:
Either brain damage had altered her personality, or her sudden kindness was just an act either to impress their families or to gain popularity on the show.
Either way, Ye Zhuoyan reminded herself not to let her guard down.
But sometimes, she couldn’t help wondering…
What if this Wen Huiyun really isn’t the same person as before?
After parting ways with Ye Zhuoyan, Wen Huiyun didn’t head to the shuttle bus.
She didn’t mind being wet, the sun and wind would dry her soon enough.
Still, she felt a pang of disappointment.
She had hoped Ye Zhuoyan would start warming up to her, gradually accepting her goodwill. But she had failed.
Fine. It’s okay. If not this time, then next time or the time after that.
With little time left in the competition, she needed to find clues quickly. Thankfully, both her show phone and personal phone were still working.
Since Ye Zhuoyan refused her help, she’d redeem the two photos herself.
She obtained a “Lover’s Stash” card and a “Wish Grant” card.
Walking through the calligraphy corridor, she spotted Liang Yuan and Mi Tao in the distance, chatting amiably as they searched for clues, politely letting each other take photos when they found something.
How harmonious.
Better find another spot.
She hadn’t checked the stone-rubbing hill near the park’s back gate yet. Maybe she’d find something there.
But before she could even leave the path, she heard raised voices from afar.
“I found this first! Letting omegas go first is basic alpha courtesy, Cheng Da-alpha~ Just hand it over, won’t you?”
“Jiang Yining, how many clues have I already given up for you? Please stop following me, okay?”
“Oh, come on! The path’s wide enough look, those two guys over there are walking the same way! You can’t just shoo all of us off!”
Wen Huiyun froze, processed the situation in less than a second, and immediately turned on her heel.
Nope. Not dealing with either of them. Goodbye.
Where else could she go?
She remembered a teahouse marked on the park map. Maybe she’d try there.
Her clothes were almost dry now. Thank goodness she was wearing a denim shirt, if it had been her usual white button-up, the fabric would have turned sheer when wet, which would’ve been awkward.
Her hair had dried in clumps, still carrying the faint, unpleasant scent of the lotus pond.
Wen Huiyun couldn’t help but sigh. In her current state, it was better to stay away from Ye Zhuoyan, she looked both ugly and dirty, having completely ruined her image.
“Achoo!”
Wen Huiyun sneezed loudly.
Oh no. After pretending to be an alpha for days, she had forgotten one crucial thing…
She wasn’t actually an alpha yet!!!
She was just an undifferentiated ordinary person where would she get the robust physique of an alpha?
“Achoo!”
Wen Huiyun rubbed her arms, generating warmth through friction, reassuring herself that it was fine. Before transmigrating into this novel, she had worked out daily, so her constitution was still strong. A minor cold would clear up in a day or two.
Near the teahouse stood a pavilion, its pillars adorned with a couplet that closely resembled the clue shared in the group chat.
Just as Wen Huiyun took a step forward, a tall figure emerged from the shaded path.
Cheng Xiaoming!
Seeing him approach the pavilion, Wen Huiyun quickened her pace.
Narrowing her eyes, she thought: Cheng Xiaoming, don’t even think about snatching the clue from me, or taking Ye Zhuoyan from me, much less trying to claim my life.
Cheng Xiaoming spotted her too, waving before pointing at the pavilion.
What? Was he taunting her?
Let’s see who gets there first.
Summoning the speed she used in high school to race for cafeteria food, Wen Huiyun dashed over, whipped out her phone, and snapped several photos of the couplet.
Click. Send.
She lifted her head to meet Cheng Xiaoming’s gaze, her eyes gleaming with triumph.
Smug.
A suit jacket draped silently over her shoulders.
The coat still carried Cheng Xiaoming’s residual warmth and a faint scent of silver agave liquor.
Wen Huiyun froze.
“?”
AI announcement: “Event time has ended!”
“Any clue photos sent from now on will be considered invalid!”
“All guests must immediately return to the shuttle bus for assembly!”
Cheng Xiaoming now stood in just a white dress shirt and gray vest, his toned physique clearly outlined.
Wen Huiyun gripped the jacket’s collar, eyes blazing: “I’m an alpha, I don’t need!”
“Achoo!!!”
Cheng Xiaoming raised his hand, resting it lightly on her shoulder to press the jacket back down.
