Exile Road: My Wife Brought Supplies Across Time - Chapter 4
The loud, confident voice was carried by the night wind into Wei Xi’s ears.
Once she caught what the person was shouting, Wei Xi’s ears twitched, and the corners of her mouth couldn’t help but twitch twice.
This person… she really has a talent for being bizarre!
Wei Xi retrieved items from her car door’s storage compartment, preparing to teach this lunatic a lesson—or at least ensure she learned to never pop up in the middle of the road so suddenly again! It was truly dangerous!
Under the bright moonlight, Ye Fengyu, oblivious to the impending danger, strode forward. A flash of pleasant surprise crossed her eyes, which were finally healing from her ordeal; she had not expected to encounter the woman who called herself a god that night again so soon. And even less, she had not expected it to happen in this manner.
Ye Fengyu saw it with her own eyes: the road ahead was empty, a bright light suddenly flashed, and within that light, the woman sat calmly inside a “white box,” charging toward her!
To appear out of thin air like this—if she were not a god, she could only be a demon.
Ye Fengyu squinted, her heart already leaning toward the former… After all, there were many rumors that demons were mostly overly beautiful, seductive, and frivolous. Yet, the woman before her had an elegant bearing and an ethereal temperament.
The moment she saw her clearly in the moonlight, Ye Fengyu thought that if there were fairies in this world, they would likely look exactly like this—skin white as snow, eyes like bright stars, hair flowing naturally, unbound and unkempt. Her peerless face bore a solemnity that made one dare not show the slightest bit of disrespect.
Amidst her thumping heart, Ye Fengyu composed herself, walked forward slowly, and stopped a few feet in front of the “white” box, cupping her fists in a martial salute.
“Dare I ask, young lady, are you the one who gave me a ride on the night of the Lantern Festival?”
Having said that, she felt a bit offensive… The woman had called herself a god that night, and now she was addressing her as a “young lady.” That might not be appropriate. Her thick brows furrowed, and Ye Fengyu cupped her fists again. “Are you the god in charge of the electric baton?”
Wei Xi: “…”
Not funny. And a bit creepy…
Wei Xi looked at the person “saluting” her with a complex expression. When she was in school and interning with film crews, she had worked on period dramas. If the etiquette coach saw this lunatic’s movements, they would probably praise her to the heavens. Her posture was not just standard and graceful; more importantly, her attitude was as if she were a true actor who had internalized her character, believing she was an ancient person meeting someone of higher status, with a genuine sense of awe emanating from her very bones.
For a moment, Wei Xi actually suspected that the other person wasn’t crazy, and that she was actually a god…
As soon as that thought popped up, Wei Xi let out a sharp breath. What god! Even if she were a god, she couldn’t be the god in charge of electric batons!
She looked at the person, smiling without warmth. “I can’t hear what you’re saying, come closer.”
Hearing this, Ye Fengyu was surprised. She was only a few feet away from the immortal, and her voice hadn’t been quiet, yet the immortal couldn’t hear her. Do immortals suffer from ear ailments too? Although she had doubts, she didn’t show them on her face and obeyed the order, stepping closer.
But she had only taken one step when she was barked at.
“Wait, stop right there.”
Wei Xi looked at the sword at the person’s waist, recalling the last time this person had nearly slit her throat with that blade…
“Throw your sword, and that… thing on your back, over to the side before you come any closer.”
Ye Fengyu looked at the sword at her side, recalled that night, and felt a wave of apology. “Yes.”
She immediately unbuckled her sword and the bundle on her back, walking to the side and placing them on the ground.
While the person moved, Wei Xi studied her closely under the moonlight. Last time, the woman’s face had been injured and covered in blood, so Wei Xi could only get a rough impression. Today, seeing her face clearly, Wei Xi’s evaluation went even higher: beautiful, truly beautiful. Wei Xi was certain that if this face were on a giant screen, there would be no dead angles; she was 360 degrees of attraction.
After admiring her inwardly, Wei Xi’s gaze swept downward. Tonight, the person was dressed much more plainly. A gray robe reached her calves, fastened with diagonal buttons; a sash tightened around her waist, leather cuffs at her wrists, and black boots on her feet. Her entire outfit looked just like a martial arts master from a period drama—capable, sharp, and dashing.
Wei Xi’s gaze lingered on the person’s broad shoulders, which held up the fabric perfectly. They were truly broad! Last time, she had thought it was just the armor, but it turned out to be the real deal. Against those wide shoulders, even the waist, which Wei Xi knew was muscular, looked slender.
Broad shoulders, narrow waist, long legs… Wei Xi squinted. Perfect.
“Immortal, can you hear me now?”
The sudden voice interrupted Wei Xi’s internal admiration. She looked up at the person who had placed her items down and was now standing right in front of her. The awe in her eyes was quickly replaced by regret. A pity, the poor thing has a broken brain…
“Not very clearly.” Wei Xi gave a deceptive, gentle smile. “Come a little closer.”
Under the moonlight, the figure shifted, and Ye Fengyu moved another step forward, her tall frame almost blocking the entire car window. The view became much darker, and Wei Xi looked up, meeting the eyes of the person leaning in through the half-rolled-down window.
“What did you just ask me?” Wei Xi acted as if she truly hadn’t heard before. “You asked if I was the god in charge of the electric baton?”
Ye Fengyu nodded. “On the night of the Lantern Festival, was it you who gave me a ride?”
Wei Xi nodded. “It was, but I’m not just the god in charge of the electric baton.” She raised an eyebrow. “Come a little closer, and I’ll show you the other magical artifact I’m in charge of.”
A flash of surprise crossed Ye Fengyu’s eyes, not because this person was the immortal from that night, but because she would so easily show her magical artifacts to a mortal… She felt a bit of strangeness, but then thought: How could a mortal fathom the thoughts of an immortal? Moreover, the immortal had saved her on the night of the Lantern Festival, and even later, when she had offended the immortal with her sword, she had only been incapacitated, not harmed. Surely, it would be fine.
Ye Fengyu complied and stepped closer.
Watching her approach, Wei Xi hummed to herself. Obedient enough.
“Don’t blink, now.”
Wei Xi decisively raised her self-defense spray and pressed down hard. With a hiss, a pungent, irritating mist shot out.
Unexpectedly, Wei Xi didn’t hear the scream she had anticipated. Having spent years in battle, Ye Fengyu had long since developed an instinct for danger. The moment the immortal moved, her body reacted faster than her consciousness, and she lunged backward! Gravel flew from under her boots, her robes fluttering, making a rustling sound in the night.
Wei Xi watched in astonishment as the person leaped backward, followed by a backflip, performing the movements with effortless fluidity, retreating some seven or eight meters! Even though she retreated extremely quickly, the immortal’s weapon was potent, and Ye Fengyu could not fully avoid it. A sudden, stinging burning sensation hit her eyes. After stabilizing, she instinctively clamped her eyes shut.
“Why does the immortal do this?” Although her eyes felt like they were being pierced by needles, Ye Fengyu had been through a hundred battles; her pain tolerance far exceeded that of an ordinary person, and she managed to bite her teeth and endure it without a sound. She gritted her teeth and asked in a low voice, “Did I offend you in some way?”
Wei Xi watched her covering one eye and trying to open the other to look at her, realizing the person had excellent reflexes and probably had some martial arts foundation. She quickly sprayed a few more times into the air to prevent her from approaching.
“Don’t come any closer! This little punishment is to make sure you remember the lesson!” Thinking of how she had almost hit the person earlier, Wei Xi was still angry. “Did no one teach you?! People shouldn’t stand in the middle of the road to play! And when you see a car, you move! What were you doing just standing there? Trying to die or pull a scam?!”
When she came out of the tunnel and saw a person standing there, her heart had nearly leaped out of her throat! If she hadn’t been paying attention, she would have hit her by now!
Ye Fengyu endured the stinging pain and opened her eyes, looking red-eyed at the stern-looking immortal. “Car? Scam? What do these words mean?” Ye Fengyu was completely confused.
Wei Xi sighed. Not just a lunatic, a fool too.
“Forget what they mean. Just remember: don’t play on the road anymore!” Wei Xi turned to point in the direction she had come from. “Especially not in the tunnel—”
The word “tunnel” vanished from her lips. Wei Xi stood there with her mouth agape, utterly shocked.
“Where’s the tunnel?” Wei Xi rolled the window down all the way and poked her whole head out. “Where did the tunnel go?”
Since there was only her and the lunatic, Wei Xi subconsciously looked at the red-eyed woman. “Where did the tunnel go?”
Ye Fengyu kept one eye closed, using the one that felt slightly better to look at Wei Xi. “Tunnel?”
Wei Xi was so shocked that she didn’t care about the lunatic anymore. She opened the car door, stepped out, and pointed into the distance in disbelief.
“There! The tunnel I just drove out of, where did it go?!”
Ye Fengyu looked in the direction the immortal was pointing—it was the path she had come from. “There is no tunnel there.” She didn’t understand why the immortal would ask such a thing, but Ye Fengyu was certain: the road ahead was flat, and there was no tunnel.
Wei Xi, of course, didn’t believe the words of a lunatic. “I just drove out of the tunnel!”
Ye Fengyu watched the immortal, who had lost her composure, and a look of confusion crossed her red eyes. “This is the imperial road from Cang Province to Ye Province. There is no tunnel.”
Wei Xi rubbed her eyes, even pinching her thigh to ensure she wasn’t dreaming! Under the moonlight, the road stretched straight into the distance, empty and unobstructed. Wei Xi ran forward a distance in utter disbelief. Such a huge tunnel—how could it just vanish?!
Reaching the place where the tunnel exit should have been, Wei Xi looked at the empty ground, feeling completely lost. Ye Fengyu, nursing her painful eyes, didn’t understand why the immortal was looking for a tunnel. She followed, wanting to ask for clarification.
Just as she was about to speak, the immortal suddenly turned around, her gaze trembling. Wei Xi held up the self-defense spray, looking at her suspiciously. “Did you do this?”
Ye Fengyu stopped in her tracks. “What did I do?”
Wei Xi wanted to ask if she had made the tunnel disappear, but the words stuck in her throat. If I ask that, I’ll be just as crazy as she is…
But such a huge tunnel had actually disappeared! This is haunted. Wei Xi subconsciously looked at the ground. The lunatic had a shadow, so she wasn’t a ghost… A demon? That didn’t seem right either; how could a demon be so easily incapacitated by her?
“Who are you?” Wei Xi looked at her, her eyes full of vigilance. Ye Fengyu had wanted to introduce herself earlier, and now that the immortal was asking, she naturally didn’t hide it. “I am Ye Fengyu, the garrison general of Ye Province.”
Ye Fengyu? Wei Xi frowned. Never heard of her, don’t know her… Ye Province… where is that? Seems like I’ve heard of it somewhere…
“Where is this place?” Wei Xi looked at her, warningly spraying a little bit of the liquid in her hand. “If you dare lie to me, I’ll spray you to death.”
Ye Fengyu had already learned the power of the thing in the immortal’s hand and took a step back, ensuring her eyes wouldn’t be injured again. “This road is the imperial road from Cang Province to Ye Province.”
“Cang Province, to Ye Province?” She was clearly on the road from the western suburbs of the city back to the urban area, what kind of Cang Province or Ye Province is this!
The navigation must have glitched again, leading me to this, this…
Wei Xi looked around. It was a desolate wilderness with no streetlights, no houses, not even a bus stop. The navigation had brought her somewhere else, and as for the tunnel… Wei Xi thought, it was probably just an illusion caused by some intense flash of light.
Yes, that’s it. People should believe in science. There was only one truth: she must have misread it. There never was a tunnel; how could a tunnel just disappear? Yes, that’s it.
Thinking this, Wei Xi hurried back toward the car. Just go back the way I came, drive forward a bit and it must be the main road!
“Immortal, please wait.” Ye Fengyu watched the retreating figure and took two quick steps to catch up.
“Don’t follow me, or I’ll spray you to death!” Wei Xi turned and waved the object in her hand warningly.
Ye Fengyu stopped where she was, standing in place, her red eyes filled with confusion. She didn’t understand why things had turned out this way…
Seeing that the person wasn’t following, Wei Xi quickly opened the door and got into the car. Locking the door, she grabbed her phone, pressed the screen to check the time, and her heart skipped a beat. 11:23 PM. Why is it this time again…
Wei Xi thought of the last time the navigation glitched; the times were identical! Her phone was the same as last time: no signal at all! Wei Xi tried with a glimmer of hope, but sure enough, all emergency calls were blocked!
Seeing movement outside the car, Wei Xi turned her head—the lunatic was walking toward her. Subconsciously taking a deep breath, Wei Xi put down the phone, fastened her seatbelt, started the car, turned the steering wheel to the end, and made a U-turn on the spot to return the way she had come.
Something is wrong. This is very wrong. Leaving is the best strategy!
Wei Xi accelerated forward. The area illuminated by the headlights was empty—there was nothing there. It was just a dirt road where two cars could barely pass. No streetlights, no other cars, and no people. The faster Wei Xi drove, the more panicked she became; the phone still had no signal, and the time, just like last time, refused to move.
Just as Wei Xi was about to stop the car to investigate, the person suddenly appearing in front of her shocked her!
What is going on?! She wasn’t always driving forward? How did this lunatic get in front of her?!
This is truly haunted!
Wei Xi slammed on the gas, accelerating past the person! The tires ground against the ground, and the kicked-up dust and gravel landed on the robes of Ye Fengyu, who hadn’t thought to dodge.
Ye Fengyu stared at the immortal car that had returned and then left again, failing to understand the immortal’s intent. She had thought the immortal had returned to look for her… why had she left again? Left… will she come back?
Ye Fengyu was at a loss. She stared fixedly into the distance, thinking about everything she had just seen, her reddened eyes shining like stars. That white box, it is a car! An immortal car!
An immortal car that travels on its own, needing neither human labor nor ox or horse! Ye Fengyu knew now why she had been able to get from Ye Province to Cang Province in one hour on the night of the Lantern Festival—it was the immortal, carrying her on this immortal car. Thinking of this, Ye Fengyu remembered that night; she vaguely recalled that she had felt as if she were in a greenhouse, surrounded by a fragrant scent…
It was a pity she had hurt her eyes that night, or she could have seen clearly what the inside of the immortal car looked like. Just now, the car had returned, and she had seen its appearance clearly. The car had four wheels, not made of wood; she didn’t know what kind of miraculous material had been cast to make them so solid. The car body was made of a material Ye Fengyu had never seen before completely white, like a cloud.
Ye Fengyu suddenly remembered the rumors that immortals could “ride the clouds.” Perhaps that was exactly what the “cloud-like” car referred to. The car also brought its own brilliant light, brighter than the moonlight, capable of completely illuminating the road ahead.
Truly magical. Ye Fengyu had lived for eighteen years and had seen such a miraculous object for the first time. I really want to see it again. As she thought this, the immortal car actually returned!
But in the blink of an eye, it sped away again.
Ye Fengyu stared fixedly at a sign on the back of the car—the color of tender green onions, painted with some black patterns. Except for the first pattern, which seemed to lack a few strokes, the remaining characters were neatly written, but Ye Fengyu couldn’t recognize any of them. Perhaps it was the name of the immortal car. Ye Fengyu silently traced those patterns in her heart. At first, she couldn’t remember them all, but fortunately, the car passed back and forth a dozen times, and Ye Fengyu finally remembered them all.
Wei Xi was certain she was haunted. Isn’t this a ghost looping around? She had clearly been driving forward without turning, yet she kept ending up back in front of this lunatic!
Seeing her again, Wei Xi gave up. She didn’t pass her, choosing instead to hit the brakes. After the car stopped, Wei Xi looked at the person not far ahead. She was standing on the side of the road with a bundle on her back, just like a passenger waiting for a ride…
In that instant, a thought occurred to Wei Xi: if she didn’t pick her up, the car probably wouldn’t be able to leave this place.
An absurd thought… but after a dozen “ghost loops,” Wei Xi was out of options and had to abandon science to explain this bizarre, ridiculous situation.
If this wasn’t a haunting, then she had lost her mind…
Wei Xi grabbed her phone and took a look: 11:23 PM. Just like the night of the Lantern Festival, the time wouldn’t move, and there was still no signal.
She pressed the screen off and looked up at the person not far in front of the car. She remembered that last time, after she parted ways with the lunatic, her phone suddenly had a signal and the time jumped to 1:23 AM…
Looking at the person standing like a pine tree under the moonlight, Wei Xi took a deep breath. Although she didn’t know exactly what was going on, she was certain that this tree—no, this person—was the key.
If I want to go back, I have no other choice.
Putting down her phone, Wei Xi released the brake, stepped on the gas, and the car drove forward slowly, finally stopping right in front of the “passenger.”
“Get in.”
Their gazes met. Wei Xi didn’t waste a single word. She had to figure this all out.
The immortal car suddenly stopped in front of her. Ye Fengyu was already suspicious, but upon hearing the immortal’s words, her eyelashes fluttered and her heart shook.
The immortal… she’s inviting me to ride with her!
Ye Fengyu clenched her fists, unable to hide the excitement in her heart. She was going to ride this immortal car again!
Only… how does one get into this immortal car?
