Everyone Loves the Alpha, But He’s Not Interested [Transmigration] - Chapter 57
The two of them waited upstairs for half an hour. The makeup artist came early to help them touch up. Once their makeup was finished and their outfits were changed, Director Jiang Yuanxin and the crew returned to continue filming their scenes.
“Scene twenty-three, take four, first shot. Mark.”
After the clapperboard sounded, Jiang Yuanxin focused his eyes on the monitor and called out, “Action.”
Feng Yunyan had already known about Hu Xiaohan marking Shan Lian. She had received a letter from Hu Xiaohan a few days earlier. Today, Hu Xiaohan came with Shan Lian for one reason. She wanted Shan Lian to give up any hope of returning to Dong Lingxue and stop interrupting Feng Yunyan’s efforts to gain Dong Lingxue’s trust.
Dong Lingxue had always considered Shan Lian as part of her inner circle. That was why she had taken her betrayal so seriously. Shan Lian’s return did make her happy, but what she had done crossed a line. Dong Lingxue believed Shan Lian must apologize to Feng Yunyan.
What she did not expect was that being a little strict with Shan Lian would cause such a strong reaction. Back in the Martial Alliance, she had always treated Shan Lian the same way, and Shan Lian had never argued like this before.
Was it because of the woman who had marked her?
Dong Lingxue sat at the eight-sided table, watching the flickering candlelight. Her lips pressed together and her expression was more serious than usual.
Feng Yunyan quietly poured a cup of tea and placed it in front of Dong Lingxue. She asked gently, “Are you thinking about Shan Lian?”
Dong Lingxue glanced at her. “Shan Lian was never like this before. I do not know what changed. Once we return to the Martial Alliance, I will ask my mother to speak with her. I apologize for her behavior, Yunyan. I am truly sorry.”
Feng Yunyan’s face softened. The candlelight reflected in her deep black eyes as she smiled. “You do not need to apologize. I am not angry. Shan Lian is still young. Her personality is bound to be a little impulsive. I believe she did not mean any harm. After what happened today, I am sure she has learned her lesson. I have already forgiven her. Lingxue, please do not be upset with her anymore. If you can, let it go for my sake. Is that alright?”
Dong Lingxue looked into Feng Yunyan’s eyes. The warm candlelight glowed in them like fire, intense and burning. Her face grew hot. She looked away and said softly, “Alright.”
“Cut.”
“That scene is good.”
By three in the afternoon, Ning Xi and Yu Qingxue had finished all their scenes scheduled for the daytime. The next shoot would take place at night, which meant they had to wait until after eight when the sky would be completely dark.
The two of them returned to the trailer to rest and drink some water. Yu Qingxue lay down on the small bed at the back and soon fell asleep. Ning Xi stood up and stepped out of the trailer. She saw Ren Rong sitting nearby on her phone and said, “I am going to find Director Jiang. Keep an eye on President Yu while I am gone.”
“Of course, Teacher Ning. Do not worry. I will take good care of her,” Ren Rong replied quickly, grabbing a small folding stool to sit by the trailer door.
“Thank you,” Ning Xi said with a smile.
Ren Rong stared at her for a moment, slightly stunned. “Teacher Ning, please do not smile at people so casually. It is dangerous. You might attract admirers.”
Most importantly, President Yu might get jealous.
Ren Rong was determined to protect this future power couple. She would not let any flirtatious outsider steal Ning Xi away from Yu Qingxue.
Ning Xi sighed and said playfully, “The truth is, I attract admirers even when I do not smile.”
“You are absolutely right,” Ren Rong replied without hesitation.
Ning Xi pressed her fist lightly against her lips, hiding her laugh with a small cough.
“I will be back in no more than thirty minutes. Thank you for your help.”
After Ning Xi walked away, Ren Rong stared at her back and suddenly realized that Ning Xi had just been teasing her. She had not even noticed.
She groaned inside. How could an assistant and her boss have so little chemistry? It was all because Teacher Ning was too beautiful. Ren Rong had believed every word she said.
At that moment, Director Jiang Yuanxin was busy editing film. The scenes with Wang You and Wei Nian were being handled by the assistant director of Team B.
Ning Xi arrived at the editing room and knocked on the door.
“Come in.”
She pushed the door open and stepped inside. She saw Director Jiang frowning at the monitor.
“Is something wrong, Director Jiang?” she asked.
He turned around, surprised to see her, and his face relaxed a little. “Ning Xi, what brings you here?”
“There is something I have been thinking about. I wanted to ask you about it.”
He sat up straighter. “You think I can help? I have been editing all day, and I feel like I am about to go bald.”
“But then I remember that if this film wins Best Director, I can finally focus on having a baby. That makes everything feel worth it.”
“It sounds like you really love children.”
Director Jiang smiled. “I do, but wanting children is not only about love. I am getting older. If I wait too long, it might become dangerous.”
He looked at Ning Xi’s face and could not help imagining how nice it would be to have a little angel of his own.
He was just average looking, but Lan Xia was beautiful. He could only hope their child would take after her.
“So, what are you wondering about? But I should tell you now, if I do not know the answer, I cannot help.”
He pulled a small pink stool over for her to sit on.
Ning Xi thanked him and sat down. She smiled and said, “I think this is something you do know.”
“Director Jiang, do you remember yesterday you told me that Wang You likes Wei Nian?”
“I remember. Why do you ask?”
Ning Xi waited until he set down his water bottle and looked her in the eyes before continuing.
“You said Wang You told you that herself. I want to ask, is there any chance you might be mistaken? Could it have been someone else who told you? If you are sure it was Wang You, could you tell me where and when she said it?”
Director Jiang stiffened slightly. He tried to act normal, but there was a trace of discomfort on his face. His eyes quietly turned away from her and avoided her gaze.
He rubbed his thumb against the water bottle while his mind raced.
Yu Qingxue had already exposed him for spilling the secret. There was no way he could reveal that she had been the one who told him. If he did, she might never share anything with him again.
What if Ning Xi turned out to be a blabbermouth too and told Wang You everything? Wang You would definitely be upset.
If he ended up offending both of his childhood friends at once, Jiang Yuanxin knew he could not afford to take that risk.
Nervously, Jiang Yuanxin swallowed hard. His nostrils flared slightly as he said, “What other person? It really was Wang You who told me. As for the time and place, I’m sure it was after Wei Nian was discharged from the hospital. I remember I went to Team B to check on progress, and while chatting with Wang You, we started talking about Wei Nian. That’s when she mentioned she had feelings for her.”
“Why are you so interested in this anyway? Could it be you suddenly realized you like Wang You?” He tried to brush it off with a laugh.
Ning Xi did not laugh. She kept her gaze fixed on him, staring so intently that Jiang Yuanxin began to sweat.
“You don’t think I’m lying to you, do you?” he asked, widening his eyes and meeting her gaze as if to prove his honesty.
“It seems like you’re feeling pretty warm, Director Jiang. Your forehead is covered in sweat,” Ning Xi replied calmly.
Only then did Jiang Yuanxin realize how nervous he had become. He reached up to wipe his forehead, and his palm came away soaked. “You’re right, I didn’t even notice. Why is it suddenly so hot?”
Trying too hard to cover it up, he quickly took off his jacket and tossed it aside. “When I work seriously, I tend to sweat. It’s normal.”
Ning Xi looked at the light gray shirt clinging to his body, soaked through with sweat. “Director Jiang, maybe you should put your jacket back on. Better yet, take a shower. You don’t want to catch a cold.”
With that, Ning Xi stood up. “Take care of yourself, Director. I’ll head out now.”
It was clear Jiang Yuanxin was hiding something. He had no intention of telling Ning Xi the truth. At first, she had only suspected something. Now, she was sure of it. Wang You had not told him about her feelings for Wei Nian.
Why wouldn’t he admit the truth?
Ning Xi could sense that the person he was protecting was important. If she could find out who it was, maybe she could finally understand the chaos she had been dragged into over the past few days.
Jiang Yuanxin watched Ning Xi leave and finally let out a long sigh. He looked down at his soaked shirt. A cool breeze drifted into the room, and he shivered.
He got up and went to the director’s lounge to take a shower and change his clothes. He decided not to return to the editing room and instead lay down on the couch in the lounge. While relaxing, he pulled out his phone and sent a message to Yu Qingxue, hoping to be praised.
He had broken into a sweat for her. He deserved a raise.
Back at the trailer, Ning Xi returned just as Ren Rong stood up and reported, “Teacher Ning, there’s been no movement inside. President Yu is still sleeping soundly.”
Ning Xi nodded. “Thank you. I’ll go check on her. I’m not leaving again anytime soon, so go take a break somewhere.”
Ren Rong picked up her little stool and left. Ning Xi stepped into the trailer and walked to the back to check on Yu Qingxue.
Yu Qingxue was curled up on the small bed, her face softly flushed as she slept. She looked peaceful and incredibly adorable.
Suddenly, the phone on the bedside table began to vibrate.
“Buzz buzz.”
“Buzz buzz. Buzz buzz.”
It was a string of WeChat messages lighting up Yu Qingxue’s phone screen, causing it to vibrate nonstop.
