- Chapter 7 - The Past and the Heartbeat
Winter was approaching, and A City had begun to cool down.
A whistling cold wind brushed against Tan Qiuyi’s shoulder-length hair. He raised a hand to tuck it aside, standing by the street with a cold, composed exterior, while inwardly regretting his impulsive decision. How could he have agreed without hesitation when the man asked if he wanted to come and wait for him?
Perhaps it was curiosity: curiosity about his work environment, about how he looked while working, and other thoughts. The more he considered it, the more Tan Qiuyi felt something was wrong with himself. He shoved his hands into his pockets, brooding over it.
When Song Yanxing walked out, he saw the youth looking somewhat dejected.
“Have you been waiting long? Sorry, things got a bit busy just now.” Song Yanxing walked quickly toward him.
Tan Qiuyi looked up and froze for a moment. The man before him, with his broad shoulders and narrow waist, wore a white shirt with the top two buttons undone, revealing his sexy collarbones. His sleeves were rolled up, showing the smooth lines of his muscles. As the man drew closer, Tan Qiuyi noticed the special effects makeup, including scars on his brow and cheek. He could only be described with one word: wild.
“Mhm?” Seeing that the youth remained silent, Song Yanxing hummed. Tan Qiuyi’s gaze held a certain determination as he looked away.
Tan Qiuyi silently condemned the dirty thoughts that flashed through his mind. Snapping back to reality under the man’s questioning gaze, he said, “Not very long.” He had actually arrived early, but he just had not known how to face the man.
“Then let us go inside. I have a little wrap-up work left; it will be over soon.”
“Mhm.”
The two walked inside together. It was a large photo studio, and people were bustling about.
“Brother Song, the photographer Zhang was looking for you. There is a shooting detail that needs to be discussed.” Assistant Xiao Liu hurried over from a distance. He paused upon seeing the person beside his boss, then greeted him politely. “Hello.”
Tan Qiuyi nodded. “Hello.”
“I will head over first,” Song Yanxing said softly to the youth. After receiving a nod, he turned to Xiao Liu. “Take Qiuyi for a walk around.”
Xiao Liu nodded and replied, “Got it!” As he watched his boss leave, Xiao Liu looked at the person who, despite the face mask, could not hide his extraordinary temperament. Remembering that this was the person his boss insisted on picking up personally after receiving the message, Xiao Liu perceptively assumed this was his boss’s future partner.
“Shall we wait in the lounge at the back? What do you think?” Xiao Liu asked.
“That is fine. Sorry for the trouble,” Tan Qiuyi nodded.
The contents of the magazine shoot were confidential, so it was not appropriate for him to bring the camera crew following him into the actual set.
Once Song Yanxing finished his work and thanked the staff, he headed toward the lounge. Before pushing the door open, he learned from Xiao Liu that Tan Qiuyi was a bit tired and had likely fallen asleep. Thus, when he gently pushed the door open and saw the person curled up on the sofa, sleeping peacefully, he felt an unprecedented sense of belonging.
He kept his footsteps extremely light, afraid of disturbing the sweet slumber. Drawing closer, Song Yanxing sat on the adjacent sofa.
There were only the two of them in the room. The camera crew had exited after installing the fixed cameras, so it was so quiet that only their breathing could be heard. Song Yanxing tried to look away, but it was difficult for his heart to settle.
Giving up on restraint, Song Yanxing let his gaze fall on the youth, tracing his features inch by inch. He was like him. The resemblance was uncanny.
Song Yanxing inexplicably recalled his high school days. He and that person had actually had very little interaction back then. One was a performer busy with an entertainment career, and the other was a cold, arrogant, favored son of heaven. They were like two parallel lines that never crossed.
Their first meeting had not actually been at a family banquet, but on an afternoon during the sunset.
Less than a year after his mother passed away, the head of the Song family welcomed a new mistress, Han Mingyue, and her child into the house. From then on, his home no longer felt like his own. Song Yanxing grew up surrounded by wolves, and as he got older, the wariness Han Mingyue and her son felt toward him became more severe. To protect his future plans, he stepped into the entertainment world, becoming the unproductive playboy they wanted him to be.
Despite being busy, Song Yanxing continued to study in secret to improve himself. On an evening when few students remained, after finishing work and returning to school to grab his study materials, he saw someone sitting perfectly straight in the next classroom, studying seriously.
The setting sun shone on his face, and one could see the fine fuzz on his exquisite features. The boy’s brow was slightly furrowed, as if stumped by the contents of the exam paper. Even after finding a solution, his face remained cold and indifferent, but the feet under the table swung slightly back and forth. The boy exuded a vibrant, youthful energy.
It was completely different from himself; it was a kind of vitality that made one yearn for it.
Back in the present, Song Yanxing lowered his eyes, his heart continuing to weigh the possibilities. As if to verify a certain thought, he called out to the system in his mind but received no response.
Indeed, from the moment he met Tan Qiuyi, the system had not appeared again. Usually, it loved to chatter and ask questions. Thinking back to when he identified Tan Qiuyi as the target for the inverse melodrama mission, the system seemed a bit excited yet remained completely silent.
Was it because it was busy, or was it exactly as he suspected? Was it afraid?
Song Yanxing rested his chin on his hand, the corners of his mouth curving into an interested smile.
