Don't Give Your Heart to Your Nemesis - Chapter 16
Hanging up the phone, Wen Xiaomian stuffed the medicine back into the drawer. Yan Ruixing had just finished his shower, wearing grey-beige loungewear with his hair still damp.
Wen Xiaomian grabbed a thick bathrobe and, with a foul expression, wrapped Yan Ruixing up tightly. “What is wrong with you? Do you want to catch a cold?”
In reality, Yan Ruixing had been dressing like this for three days. “What is wrong with you?”
“None of your business.” Wen Xiaomian rubbed his head vigorously with a towel, as if he were polishing and buffing a piece of stone. “Worry about yourself first!”
Yan Ruixing’s head swayed wildly under the buffing.
Who upset him now?
Once the man was wrapped up like a zongzi, Wen Xiaomian stared at him until his hair was completely dry before giving up the polishing. He then proactively went to the bedroom and lay down on his floor mat.
“Sleep on the bed,” Yan Ruixing said, pulling his own quilt from Wen Xiaomian’s arms.
Wen Xiaomian pulled the quilt back down to the floor and lay there comfortably. “Sleeping on your broken bed is not as good as sleeping on the floor.”
“Neurotic.” Yan Ruixing turned off the light and added a reminder, “Speak up if you feel unwell.”
“Mm.”
“Follow-up checkup tomorrow.”
“Got it.”
Yan Ruixing added, “Do not be late.”
Wen Xiaomian replied, “I know, I know. Goodnight.”
Wen Xiaomian was being so obedient and considerate that Yan Ruixing suspected he had been possessed or was plotting a massive conspiracy.
They slept peacefully through the night. Wen Xiaomian remained quiet, but Yan Ruixing woke up every three hours to check on the person on the floor.
The Follow-up Visit
The follow-up checkup the next day went very smoothly. After finishing his tests, Wen Xiaomian went to the vending machine on the first basement level to buy a soda. Turning around, he saw Hu Xiaona huddled in a corner gnawing on chicken feet, her mouth moving incessantly. She was likely bad-mouthing someone again.
Wen Xiaomian bought an extra bottle of cola and handed it to her. “Why have you not left yet?”
Hu Xiaona gulped it down and did not speak until she had her fill. “Doctor Yan has not left work yet. This beast of burden dares not make a move.”
“Did you make another mistake?”
Hu Xiaona sniffled and wiped her nose with her sleeve. “I was releasing appointment slots for Doctor Yan yesterday. My hand slipped, and I ended up putting out sixty.”
“How many were there supposed to be?”
“Thirty.”
Wen Xiaomian: “…”
No wonder Yan Ruixing woke up so early today. Before leaving the house, his face looked like it came with its own dark cloud special effect.
Hu Xiaona let out a sorrowful and desolate sigh. “It is clear that my destiny and work are at odds. In this life, I am simply not meant to endure the hardships of a job.”
“If you do not suffer while you are young, how will you get used to it when you are old?”
Hu Xiaona spat out a chicken bone. “But I had a master perform a reading for me. He said I am naturally not cut out for labor.”
Wen Xiaomian asked, “Then what are you good at?”
“Does eating count?” Hu Xiaona pulled out a chicken foot and offered it to Wen Xiaomian. “Do you want one?”
“I am not good at that.”
“Oh, alright then.” Hu Xiaona stuffed the chicken foot back into her pocket, saving it for herself. “Handsome, why are you still here?”
Wen Xiaomian shook his cola. “Waiting for someone.”
“Oh!” Hu Xiaona squinted, seeing through him but not saying it. “Handsome, can I ask you something?”
Wen Xiaomian turned and waited for her to speak.
“What is your relationship with Doctor Yan?”
“Would you believe me if I told you?”
The gossip-loving blood in Hu Xiaona’s chest began to boil. “You were the one who sent those roses a while back, right?”
“Did he tell you that?”
Yan Ruixing would never tell her such things. Hu Xiaona gnawed on a chicken foot and puffed out her chest. “Of course, I figured it out using my own intelligence and talent.”
Silk banners, red envelopes, and giant roses, along with relentless pursuit; it all matched up with their conversations. Aside from him, there was not a second lunatic to be found!
“Handsome, why did you use that method to pursue Doctor Yan?”
Wen Xiaomian was amused. “Who told you I am pursuing him?”
Hu Xiaona said, “Oh, is that so?”
Not pursuing him but sending roses? Not pursuing him but waiting for him to get off work? Not pursuing him but claiming to be pregnant with his child?
Hu Xiaona gave him the benefit of the doubt and did not expose him. “Then all those things you did must have cost a lot of money, right?”
“I forgot.”
Hu Xiaona: “…”
A person who says such things is either truly rich or a big boaster. If he had money, he could buy roses. If he did not, he could borrow money to buy them.
“Handsome, what do you do for a living?”
“I am your teacher’s nanny.”
“What?”
“I live on his floor and serve him diligently.”
“Oh.”
Hu Xiaona’s mind was in a storm. Someone was draining her wisdom and frantically generating multiple-choice questions.
Given: The handsome guy has a Grade 4 acoustic neuroma and firmly believes he is pregnant with Doctor Yan’s child. He sent flowers, a silk banner, and a Baby Bus SVIP card to Doctor Yan. He claims to live in Doctor Yan’s house to serve him. Doctor Yan once requested he see a psychiatrist. Question: What is the handsome guy’s actual situation?
-
- He is truly pregnant. B. He really lives at Doctor Yan’s house. C. His brain is truly not functioning well. D. The acoustic neuroma is pressing on his nerves, causing hallucinations. In reality, he has a crush on Doctor Yan but is being stubborn. Simultaneously, he is likely suppressing his feelings for Doctor Yan because of his illness!
When in doubt, pick the longest answer. Yes, the answer is D!
With a romantic obsession like his, he could support ten families of zombies.
Hu Xiaona looked at the love-struck man and could not help but worry. “Since you spent so much money, do you still have enough for surgery?”
Wen Xiaomian talked nonsense. “I will just borrow money and take out loans to pay it back slowly.”
Thinking about his illness, his debt, and his incredibly handsome face, Hu Xiaona felt even more pity. “Handsome, have you heard of Shuidichou?”
“What is that?”
Hu Xiaona explained simply that it was a platform where patients could post their conditions to receive donations from kind people.
She then encouraged him, “You are so handsome. If you post a clear photo of your face, there will definitely be plenty of donors.”
“Forget it,” Wen Xiaomian said. “The opportunity should be left for greater heroes.”
Hu Xiaona thought to herself that he should stop trying to save face while suffering. She offered another suggestion: “How about you try being a suggestive live-streamer?”
Wen Xiaomian: “…”
“Do not be embarrassed. Earning money is not disgraceful,” Hu Xiaona advised and urged. “You could consider it a way of giving back to the public.”
“I am very conservative. I must remain chaste for love.”
“Oh my god, handsome! You are poor but have integrity! Remaining chaste for love until your hair turns white!” Hu Xiaona handed over her phone. “Scan my QR code and add me.”
“What for now?”
“Oh, do not worry about it! Just add me first!”
After adding each other as friends, Wen Xiaomian’s phone received Hu Xiaona’s name and a red envelope.
Fearing he would not accept it, Hu Xiaona specifically said, “Do not be polite with me. Although I am a beast of burden every day and do not have a single cent as an intern, at least I do not have loans. I am definitely better off than you.”
Wen Xiaomian’s expression gradually contorted. “Are you robbing the rich to help the poor?”
“A hero does not ask for reasons. From today on, we are brothers!” Hu Xiaona snatched his phone, accepted the red envelope for him, and handed it back. “Just take it.”
Wen Xiaomian looked at the six-yuan red envelope on the screen and heard Hu Xiaona’s grand words beside him. “You are already suffering so much. How could I let you treat me to two colas? I am giving the money back to you!”
“You are indeed generous.”
“It is a small matter, it is nothing,” Hu Xiaona started to say, then froze. Her eyes nearly popped out of her head. “Holy cow! What is going on?”
Following Hu Xiaona’s gaze, not far away was Yan Ruixing, who had changed out of his white lab coat. A man was standing beside him.
Wen Xiaomian recognized him instantly. He was the man with glasses who had called Yan Ruixing on the night they watched the animal movie and had patted his shoulder.
The two were talking and laughing. Subsequently, Yan Ruixing got into the man’s car.
Wen Xiaomian stared at the front of the car. “Who is that guy?”
“Chen Wen, the Deputy Director of Neurosurgery.”
“Are they close?”
“Of course! ENT is a branch of neurosurgery, and many operations overlap.” Hu Xiaona whispered secretly, “Supposedly, Doctor Yan and Director Chen knew each other before they came to the provincial hospital.”
Hu Xiaona’s mouth was wide open as she spilled the gossip. “According to a super-reliable source, Director Chen confessed to Doctor Yan a while back.”
Wen Xiaomian unscrewed his bottle of cola, not looking particularly surprised. “How old is that guy?”
“Thirty-seven.”
“That old?”
“It is alright. That age is considered young in the medical circle,” Hu Xiaona said.
Wen Xiaomian asked casually, “What is he like?”
Hu Xiaona was not stingy with her praise. At the provincial hospital, Director Chen was famous for being gentle. He had been promoted to Deputy Chief Physician in his thirties. His abilities and personality were beyond reproach.
From an objective perspective, given Yan Ruixing’s foul temper, he really should find someone who could put up with it.
“A pity he is old and poor.” Wen Xiaomian stared at the two from afar, his mouth curling as if he had smelled spoiled food. “No vision.”
“Director Chen is not poor at all.”
Hu Xiaona searched her gossip database and rattled things off one by one. Director Chen’s house was a gift from the hospital; it had three bedrooms and two living areas, over one hundred and fifty square meters. He had car and meal allowances, and his housing fund and social security were paid at the maximum rate.
As Hu Xiaona spoke, her eyes grew brighter. If she kept praising him, they would shine like concert spotlights.
Now, Wen Xiaomian had not only smelled spoiled food but had been forced to swallow a mouthful. “Oh, then he is even poorer than I imagined.”
Hu Xiaona looked at the man who had accepted her six-yuan red envelope but looked down on someone with a million-yuan annual salary as poor.
Sigh, a man’s pride is truly more valuable than a urinal. If you were not so handsome, I would have fought you by now.
Wait, Director Chen is good, but looking at faces, this handsome guy is still the best; especially when paired with Doctor Yan’s cool and beautiful face.
Ooh.
Her heart was racing, and the background music was swelling.
Oh no, it is a signal to start shipping them!
Yan Ruixing and Chen Wen were far away, too far to hear their conversation or see their expressions. However, the wristband kept reminding Wen Xiaomian that Yan Ruixing was very happy, excited, and glad.
A secret meeting downstairs the day before yesterday, and now he was in the man’s car today.
Heh, quite the progress.
Wen Xiaomian stood up and headed in the opposite direction.
“Eh? Handsome, are you not waiting for Doctor Yan anymore?”
Wen Xiaomian walked with his hands in his pockets. He already has someone to give him a ride. Why should I wait?
Before getting into his car, Wen Xiaomian bought a pack of cigarettes to smoke. Even though he had covered it with his sleeve, the sensation of pleasure was still tapping against the skin of his wrist. Unable to bear it any longer, Wen Xiaomian stuffed a ball of tissue paper in to completely cover it.
Less than a minute later, his phone rang.
Wen Xiaomian glanced at the caller ID. “Is there something you want?”
“Did you take off the wristband?”
“I would not dare.”
“Adjust the position. I cannot receive your heart rate.”
Wen Xiaomian was in a bad mood as he pulled the paper out of the wristband. “I know. If that is all, I am hanging up.”
“I am at the outpatient building. Come and pick me up.”
“Go ride in someone else’s car.”
“Come here now. I will only wait for five minutes.”
Having said that, Yan Ruixing cut the call.
Wen Xiaomian slammed on the gas and drove toward the outpatient building. “Who else could put up with your foul temper but me!”
