- Chapter 6 - Tucking Contraceptives into Her Hand, Causing a Blush
“Is that so? I never expected someone from the countryside to know such things. It is truly eye-opening.” Zhou Yinian deliberately painted Ruan Qiu as useless.
“Right? I think she is quite impressive. Yinian, if we both get selected, that would be wonderful.”
Wonderful? If Ruan Qiu entered the military hospital, she would rely on Zhou Yishen’s rank to overshadow Ruanruan. Wouldn’t that mean Zhou Yishen would surpass him? Neither Ruan Qiu nor Zhou Yishen deserved such a smooth life. However, this Tian Ruanruan was soft-hearted. They had agreed to find people to sabotage Ruan Qiu, yet she was helping her instead!
“Ruanruan, you must keep a close eye on her. You must not let her embarrass the Zhou family.”
“Don’t worry, I will help my sister-in-law.”
Zhou Yinian was anxious, but he could not tell Tian Ruanruan explicitly. He feared that if she saw through his true character and stopped associating with him, the loss would be far greater than the gain.
“Achoo!”
As she neared the family quarters, Ruan Qiu let out a violent sneeze. The spring in Jiangcheng still held a bit of a chill; it was likely she had caught a cold from taking cold showers at night recently. Rubbing her nose, Ruan Qiu walked toward the family quarters.
“Help! Somebody, help!”
A scream echoed from within the residential building. The guard heard the cry, left his post, and ran toward the sound. Ruan Qiu followed close behind. The quarters consisted of north and south wings, and the shouting came from the south side.
By the time Ruan Qiu arrived, a crowd had already gathered. A thick, metallic scent of blood pricked her nostrils. Ruan Qiu hurriedly pushed through the crowd and saw a woman with a large belly lying on the ground. Her body was contorted, her face pale, and she was drifting in and out of consciousness. The area beneath her was soaked in blood.
“Don’t move her! She has a rib fracture!”
Ruan Qiu crouched down and spoke to the woman next to the victim who was crying and wailing: “Stop crying. Hurry and call someone to take her to the hospital!”
The onlookers were all women and children, and no one dared to intervene. The woman who was crying scrambled to her feet upon hearing this, but she was so distraught that she did not know what to do.
“I will go call for help!” the guard trainee yelled, rushing away.
“What happened?” Sister-in-law Lian had also heard the commotion and come over. Seeing Ruan Qiu there, she came up to ask.
“Sister-in-law, she fell from the second floor. I suspect a skull fracture and possibly a rib fracture. We must send her to the hospital immediately. In this condition, the hospital must send someone to ensure she does not go into shock, or the consequences will be dire.”
It could potentially result in two deaths.
“What should we do? I will go find someone.”
Before Sister-in-law Lian could leave, a flurry of footsteps approached. Several men who had just finished training hurried over.
“Xiao Tao!”
A young man in his twenties with a soldier’s uniform and upright features walked over. He reached out to help the woman on the ground but was stopped by Ruan Qiu.
“Don’t move her. Her condition is critical right now.”
“Xiao Tao, what happened to you? Mom, what happened?” The man turned to ask the older woman. The woman gestured with her hands, crying and sobbing, unable to speak a word.
“We must get her to the hospital first,” Zhou Yishen, who had arrived with the others, said calmly.
“Yes, she must go to the hospital, but I suspect she has a rib fracture that may have punctured her lungs. If we move her recklessly, she might not even make it to the hospital alive,” Ruan Qiu warned everyone about the woman’s condition.
Zhou Yishen looked at Ruan Qiu. Although he found her judgment strange, his instinct told him he could trust her. “What should we do?”
Ruan Qiu shook her head. She could analyze the situation, but she was not a surgeon; she could not perform an operation.
“It is here! The hospital car is coming!” the guard trainee shouted as he ran back. “The military hospital vehicle just happened to be passing by after discharging a patient.”
It was the woman’s good fortune. A military hospital official had been discharged today, and the hospital had sent a vehicle to take them home just as this incident occurred. If there were no ambulance, the woman and her unborn child would surely die. Currently, saving even one of them would be a stroke of luck.
Soon, the hospital vehicle arrived. Fortunately, a surgeon was on board. Under the doctor’s instructions, everyone worked together to lift the woman into the vehicle.
“Doctor, she might have a skull fracture and a rib fracture that punctured her lungs,” the man urgently relayed what Ruan Qiu had said.
“How did you determine that?” the doctor asked with a frown.
The man glanced at Ruan Qiu. “It was what Battalion Commander Zhou’s wife said.”
The male doctor gave Ruan Qiu a look, his eyes full of skepticism. A young girl like her—what could she possibly know? She was just talking nonsense. Ruan Qiu noticed the man’s disdain, but she insisted seriously: “It is as I said. Please, you must take my advice into account.”
The doctor shot her a scornful glance, said nothing, and simply told the family to get in the car. After the vehicle left, Zhou Yishen looked at Ruan Qiu.
What was with that look in his eyes?
“Xiao Qiu, you are too amazing! How could you tell all that?” Sister-in-law Lian praised her happily.
Ruan Qiu rubbed her nose. As a forensic examiner, the one thing she never lacked was dissecting corpses; she had seen all kinds of deaths. Over time, she had developed this ability to analyze situations. However, a pregnant woman falling from the second floor—based on her forensic intuition, there was something not quite right about it. But these were not things she could mention lightly yet.
Back home, Ruan Qiu went to cook. Aside from some dry noodles, there were no other ingredients in the kitchen, not even a single vegetable. Ruan Qiu blamed herself; why had she forgotten to buy groceries on her way back?
“I usually eat at the canteen.”
Zhou Yishen walked into the kitchen and saw Ruan Qiu staring blankly at the noodles. He scratched his head. “I will go buy some vegetables now.”
“No need. We will just have the noodles; luckily, there is some sauce here. I will buy some vegetables when I return early tomorrow.” Ruan Qiu knew his training was exhausting and did not want him running out to buy food.
“Alright.”
Zhou Yishen left the kitchen and sat down slowly on the sofa. He had lived alone for so long, and now that there was another person in the house, his own wife, the feeling was quite strange.
“Xiao Qiu!” Sister-in-law Lian entered the house with a brown paper package containing a few eggs, two chicken drumsticks, and a piece of cured meat.
“Sister-in-law Lian.”
“These were sent by my parents’ family. We cannot eat all of this, so you keep them.” Sister-in-law Lian set the items down and said with a smile: “Make sure to give Xiao Zhou some extra nourishment. Between training all day and exerting himself at night, you should cherish him more.”
Zhou Yishen’s face flushed red, and he did not know where to put his hands. Sister-in-law Lian was truly something else; she said whatever came to her mind. He and Ruan Qiu had only just submitted their marriage registration and had not yet done that. Ruan Qiu, on the other hand, appeared calm, seemingly indifferent or unconcerned about affairs between men and women. Zhou Yishen was not sure if Ruan Qiu really did not care about those things, or if she simply did not care about them with him.
“Sister-in-law, I will try my best.”
Sister-in-law Lian burst into laughter. “Listen to that; Xiao Zhou is truly quick on the uptake.”
After saying that, she secretly tucked something into Ruan Qiu’s hand, gave a playful wink, and then left with a cheerful laugh. Ruan Qiu opened her palm to find contraceptives. She hurriedly hid them behind her back, blushing uncontrollably. She had been single in her past life, but she had certainly seen these before.
Zhou Yishen saw the two women being secretive and asked Ruan Qiu: “What did she give you?”
