Chapter 7: “Don’t Move Around. Endure it for a Little While.”
In the middle of the night, half-asleep, Jiang Zhi faintly heard a rustling sound, a very subtle noise.
Jiang Zhi suddenly woke up. What was that sound? Did a thief break in?!
She cautiously refrained from making any large movements and quietly looked towards the source of the sound, then saw… her anxious heart settled.
Although the lights were off and it was pitch black, based on the silhouette, it was clearly Lin Anran.
What was this young lady doing secretly in the kitchen in the middle of the night without turning on the lights?
Could it be that she was afraid the light would disturb her sleeping in the living room?
Jiang Zhi shook her head. What are you thinking? She’s not that considerate. It’s enough that she isn’t making trouble.
Lin Anran was busy in the kitchen, occasionally looking back, acting very furtively.
Jiang Zhi felt suspicious. What exactly is she doing? She’s not trying to secretly poison me, this ‘pauper,’ as revenge, is she?
Lin Anran turned around to check on the person on the sofa. As expected, her eyes squarely met those of Jiang Zhi, who had already woken up and was sitting up.
The air was silent for a few seconds.
Lin Anran’s expression froze. Her hand trembled, and the object in her hand dropped to the floor with a loud clatter.
This was immediately followed by a sharp intake of breath.
Jiang Zhi quickly stood up, hurriedly put on her shoes, turned on the living room light, and rushed over.
“What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
The kitchen was a mess. The kettle had been knocked over, and coffee grounds were spilled nearby.
Lin Anran was squatting on the floor, clutching her arm.
By the looks of it, she had likely splashed hot water on her arm.
“Why are you so careless? Is it serious? Let me see.” Jiang Zhi knelt down to check the injury on her arm.
The area splashed by the hot water was extensively red, but there were no blisters, so it wasn’t particularly severe.
The extensive redness might also be related to Lin Anran’s sensitive skin. Jiang Zhi had noticed this when she cut her foot last time—Miss Lin’s skin seemed exceptionally delicate.
Even minor injuries tended to look more severe on her than on an average person.
Jiang Zhi turned on the faucet and instructed her to hold her arm under the cool water.
Lin Anran was reluctant to cooperate, complaining that the water was cold.
Jiang Zhi gave a sharp “Tsk”: “Hurry up, unless you want to go to the hospital in the middle of the night.”
Lin Anran pouted, but obediently placed her arm under the cold water and didn’t move it, cooperating reasonably well.
After about ten minutes of rinsing, seeing no signs of the injury worsening, Jiang Zhi finally relaxed.
The two sat on the sofa, and Jiang Zhi was applying burn ointment to her arm.
The previous band-aids, the mosquito bite ointment, and now the burn ointment were all items Jiang Zhi had bought for herself for emergencies. They had been sitting there gathering dust. Jiang Zhi rarely used them, but Lin Anran had used them all up within a few days of arriving.
She really is a trouble magnet, prone to injury.
Jiang Zhi’s movements were very light, which made Lin Anran feel a bit ticklish. Unable to bear the itching sensation, Lin Anran instinctively tried to pull her hand away.
Jiang Zhi seemed to have anticipated this person’s non-cooperation. The moment Lin Anran started to pull back, Jiang Zhi grabbed her wrist, restraining it firmly.
“Don’t move around. I’ll be done soon. Endure it for a little while,” Jiang Zhi sighed without looking up: “Why are you up in the middle of the night, not sleeping, not turning on the lights, secretly making coffee, and ending up like this?”
Lin Anran’s arrogant eyes immediately glared: “It’s all your fault! Who told you to be so stingy and only let me have one cup!”
Great. Being cautious so she wouldn’t stay up all night is now a fault.
Jiang Zhi looked at her helplessly: “Alright, alright, my fault. I shouldn’t have only given you one cup.”
After the burn ointment was applied, Jiang Zhi released the wrist she was holding. Only then did she notice that the area around Lin Anran’s wrist was red.
The redness was exactly where Jiang Zhi had held her.
She hadn’t used much force, so why did it turn red like that? Miss Lin’s skin really was unusually sensitive.
How could her family bear to send out such a delicate person, even down to her skin?
Although her temper was bad, her words unpleasant, and she lacked social graces, she had been spoiled for so many years, it wasn’t something that happened overnight. Why did they suddenly decide to send her out for “training”?
Moreover, her flaws weren’t exactly fatal. Being a high-status princess, a little arrogance and willfulness seemed reasonable. As long as she wasn’t malicious and didn’t do anything too outrageous, it didn’t seem necessary to make her suffer for training.
A sense of curiosity inexplicably arose.
“What kind of trouble did you cause that made your family harden their hearts and send you out for training?” Curiosity led her to ask, though she didn’t know if Lin Anran would answer.
Lin Anran looked away, not wanting to discuss it.
If she didn’t want to talk about it, that was fine. Jiang Zhi was curious, but she didn’t have the habit of digging for answers.
“Alright, the burn ointment is applied. Go back to sleep. You can’t have coffee, and this little commotion won’t change that. And don’t secretly come out to brew it yourself again,” Jiang Zhi reminded her, just to be sure.
“Are you giving me orders now?” Lin Anran narrowed her eyes unhappily.
Jiang Zhi looked at her fierce little expression and couldn’t help but gently pat her head: “Yes, I’m giving you an order. Go back to sleep.”
Lin Anran’s explosive temper looked intimidating, but in reality, she was a paper tiger. After all, Jiang Zhi dared to pat her head now.
Lin Anran was astonished. Clearly, no one had ever patted her head before: “What are you doing!”
Jiang Zhi chuckled: “Want to hit me back?”
Slap
Lin Anran hit her back without hesitation, with such force that Jiang Zhi let out a sharp “Hiss.”
Lin Anran curled her fingers, knowing she had hit too hard. Her eyes darted around nervously, looking left and right, but she showed no intention of apologizing.
Seeing that Jiang Zhi remained silent, she couldn’t contain herself and whispered: “Are you angry?”
Jiang Zhi didn’t reply. The spot where she was hit was still throbbing faintly.
“It’s not my fault. You told me to hit you back.”
“Why are you still not talking?”
“Is it worth it? Such a small thing, do you need to be angry?”
Jiang Zhi: “Is that how you apologize to people?”
Lin Anran: “Who said I’m apologizing to you!”
Jiang Zhi smiled and shook her head: “Never mind. It’s late. Go to sleep.”
Lin Anran gave an “Oh.” Knowing she had messed up, she stopped causing trouble and obediently went to bed.
When she reached the bedroom door, she looked back at the person on the sofa.
Jiang Zhi was already lying down, covered with a thin blanket. Her long figure was curled up on the short, narrow sofa.
It must be very uncomfortable sleeping on the sofa like that.
Lin Anran pursed her lips: “Well, you…”
Jiang Zhi half-sat up: “Hmm?”
Her hair fell forward with the movement. Without her black-rimmed glasses, and never wearing makeup, she looked clean and refreshing, like a cool glass of water in the summer. Her appearance wasn’t outstanding, but she was wholesome and clean.
Her eyes were long and beautiful, and her lips looked soft, easy to touch?
“What?” Jiang Zhi asked, seeing her hesitate to speak.
“You’re really ugly.” After saying that, she turned and closed the door with a bang.
Jiang Zhi’s shoulders jumped from the loud door slam.
What now? Did I offend her again?
Jiang Zhi didn’t dwell on it. Lin Anran was simply a puzzling person. She lay down again, preparing to sleep.
Just then, the bedroom door opened again: “I know you’re uncomfortable sleeping on the sofa, but you ugly person, don’t even think about sleeping in my bed. I don’t like sleeping with other people. Don’t dream about it.”
Jiang Zhi: “?”
Jiang Zhi: “…”
The door closed again. In a place Jiang Zhi couldn’t see, Lin Anran was secretly leaning against the door, eavesdropping.
When no sound came for a long time, Lin Anran lost her patience and cursed under her breath.
“This pauper doesn’t understand anything! I was kindly going to offer half the bed, and she didn’t appreciate it! Serves her right for being uncomfortable. Just keep sleeping on your sofa.”
She lay down on the bed, annoyed, tossing and turning. The person who usually fell asleep instantly found herself unable to sleep tonight.
The question Jiang Zhi had asked echoed in her ears: “What kind of trouble did you cause that made your family harden their hearts and send you out for training?”
Her mood suddenly became low.
She buried her head in the quilt, muttering to herself: “I didn’t cause trouble! They insist it’s my fault. I’m not wrong…”
Her tone was wronged, like a poor, abandoned cat.
After feeling wronged for a short while, she lightheartedly dismissed these thoughts.
“Jiang Yi,” she murmured her name.
“Such an unpleasant name. Ugly person, shabby ghost, money-grubber, stingy ghost, opportunist, so tacky, a useless beggar…”
“Jiang Yi… Jiang Yi…”
She recited her name unconsciously for quite some time.
A few minutes later, she snapped back: “Why am I constantly saying her name?”
