Chapter 6: “Jiang Yi, Are You Angry?”
“Coffee, the one from yesterday, make me a cup. Don’t add too much water; I want it stronger.”
As soon as she got home, Lin Anran sat on the sofa and immediately started ordering Jiang Zhi around, while ceaselessly scratching the large, itchy mosquito bites on her arm.
Her skin was naturally sensitive. With just a slight scratch, red marks were left all over her fair skin.
“Stop scratching.” Jiang Zhi couldn’t stand it and grabbed her hand.
“I’m itchy.” Lin Anran continued to scratch instinctively.
If she kept scratching, she would break the skin, and then she would probably start crying about the pain again.
Jiang Zhi sighed, turned to the drawer by the door to search for something, and returned with a tube of ointment.
She sat down next to Lin Anran and gently pulled over her badly scratched arm.
“What are you doing?”
“You’re itchy, right? This can treat mosquito bites. It will feel much better when you apply it.”
Lin Anran looked at the ointment in Jiang Zhi’s hand with suspicion: “The packaging is tacky, it looks cheap, and it smells bad. I don’t want to use it. I don’t like it. Get me another ointment.”
Jiang Zhi ignored her and directly smeared the ointment onto her arm.
A cool, refreshing sensation spread, instantly reducing the itchiness.
The person who had been complaining suddenly fell silent, looking at the ointment on her arm with surprise and curiosity.
Jiang Zhi asked: “Does it feel much better?”
Lin Anran subconsciously refuted: “Of course not! How could this inferior ointment be useful?”
Despite what she said, when she saw Jiang Zhi stop applying it, Lin Anran urged: “Apply some more. Why are you so stingy with the ointment, you pauper?”
Jiang Zhi laughed: “Applying it, I’ll apply it for you. As much as you want.”
Lin Anran had several large mosquito bites on her arm. Jiang Zhi applied ointment to each one, gently rubbing it in to allow it to be fully absorbed.
Lin Anran, uncharacteristically, didn’t complain. For a moment, no one spoke in the living room. Only the faint sounds of the food stalls downstairs and the tick-tock of the clock on the wall could be heard.
Lin Anran’s gaze was fixed on Jiang Zhi, watching her for a long time. Finally, she said awkwardly: “You, you are marginally acceptable.”
Jiang Zhi paused her actions, looking up at her, a little puzzled. This was the second time today Lin Anran had said she was “marginally acceptable.”
It felt like a random, out-of-the-blue comment.
Lin Anran’s lips curved slightly, and she scoffed: “I only complimented you once. Why are you puffing up your chest? You’re not composed at all.”
Jiang Zhi: “?”
“Are you done applying it?” Lin Anran deliberately averted her gaze.
“Done.” Jiang Zhi released her hand.
Lin Anran looked at her hand with the ointment applied and sniffed it. It had a light herbal fragrance, not unpleasant, and certainly much better than the smell of the mosquito repellent.
Saying thank you was naturally impossible. The only response Jiang Zhi received was: “You’re so slow and dawdling. Where is my coffee? I want coffee. Why hasn’t it been brewed yet?”
Jiang Zhi looked at her exasperatedly: “Third Miss Lin, I don’t have three heads and six arms. How could I brew coffee while applying ointment for you?”
Lin Anran: “Why are you being so fierce!”
Who’s being fierce? Jiang Zhi was almost amused by this person’s antics. She got up and went to the kitchen to brew the coffee Lin Anran was craving.
Soon, the coffee was placed in front of her.
Lin Anran was currently engrossed in her phone. Without even looking up, she took the cup with one hand, playing on her phone while elegantly sipping the coffee.
The coffee was quickly finished. Jiang Zhi, who was mopping the floor, preemptively said: “No refills. You can only have one cup.”
Lin Anran’s hand, holding the cup, paused, and then she clacked the cup onto the table.
“Are you so poor now that you can’t even spare a second cup of this instant coffee?”
Jiang Zhi said nothing, quietly continuing to mop the floor.
“I’m talking to you. Why are you ignoring me?”
Jiang Zhi stopped her movements and looked at her: “It’s not about sparing it. You drank so much yesterday that you were tossing and turning all night. Have you forgotten about that?”
Lin Anran: “Mind your own business.”
Jiang Zhi straightened up, holding the mop, and just stared at her without expression.
Lin Anran’s arrogance immediately deflated. She pouted, saying angrily: “Fine, I won’t drink it. It’s no big deal.”
Right after she finished mopping the floor, she heard the third Miss Lin calling out again.
“Come here.”
“What do you want now?”
“Just come here when I tell you to. You talk too much.”
Jiang Zhi had no choice but to walk over. Then she saw Lin Anran holding up her phone, saying: “This one. Buy this for me.”
Jiang Zhi glanced at the phone screen. Good heavens, a pink helmet, with a 1 followed by six zeros.
“1 million? Is this helmet made of gold?” So, she had been picking this out while playing on her phone: “I say, Third Miss Lin, you really think highly of me. If I could afford this, why would I be living in this small rental apartment?”
Lin Anran rolled her eyes at her: “I knew you pauper would be stingy. Never mind, this one will do instead.”
This time the price wasn’t as outrageous, but it still wasn’t friendly: a 1,999 helmet.
“This one isn’t expensive, is it? Although it’s not as good as the one million one, it’s acceptable. Just buy me this one.” Lin Anran made it seem like she was being considerate by settling for less.
Jiang Zhi: “Do you know how much my little electric scooter cost? Even if I sold it, it wouldn’t be worth as much as your helmet.”
She took Lin Anran’s phone, clicked on the “Find similar products” option below, then sorted by price. The first one listed was only ninety-nine yuan.
“This one is similar to the one you chose. Let’s just buy this one,” Jiang Zhi said.
“What are you talking about? You’re clearly just looking at the cheapest one,” Lin Anran pointed at the phone: “How is it the same? It’s miles apart! I don’t want it. I want the one I chose earlier.”
Jiang Zhi handed the phone back: “Then I won’t buy it at all.”
Lin Anran stared at her, furious: “You!”
In the end, Lin Anran angrily, reluctantly, and extremely resentfully chose the supposedly similar product priced at 99 yuan.
She was unhappy, her face grim, muttering “pauper” several times.
Knock, knock, knock
A knock came from outside the door.
Jiang Zhi looked at the door in confusion. It was late, and she hadn’t ordered takeout. Logically, no one should be visiting.
Jiang Zhi stopped at the door, raising her voice slightly: “Who is it?”
A voice came from outside: “Hello, we are XX Moving Company. Your packed luggage is already outside the door.”
Lin Anran replied casually: “Open the door for them. I called the moving company. Since you have nothing here, and it’s inconvenient for me to live here, I had my things moved over.”
When the door was opened, the first things that came into view were the movers, followed by seven or eight large boxes.
“You have quite a lot of things. I’ll help you move them in. Is the living room okay?” The mover was friendly and courteous.
Of course, when the mover stated the price that needed to be paid, Jiang Zhi understood why the service attitude was so friendly.
“Two thousand? And cash on delivery?” Jiang Zhi was stunned.
The mover’s smile faltered for a moment. Was this person going to refuse to pay?
Jiang Zhi turned to look at the culprit. Lin Anran avoided her gaze, tossed her long hair, acting as if nothing happened and it was none of her business.
Jiang Zhi really wanted to refuse payment!
Did Lin Anran have the money to pay? Obviously not. So who was paying?
Who else but herself?
“Look at how stingy you are. I’ll pay you back later,” Lin Anran said, sounding a little guilty.
Jiang Zhi took out her phone, scanning the code to pay with a pained heart.
After the mover left and she closed the door, looking at the already small living room that now looked even narrower due to the luggage, and then looking at the payment record, she felt like grinding her teeth.
“Your apartment is really small. My luggage can barely fit. Hurry up and unpack these suitcases. I can’t stand this messy environment,” Lin Anran commanded, waving her hand:
“Also, I’m going to take a shower. Pick out a change of clothes for me. I absolutely cannot wear that shabby pajama you gave me for another day.”
Jiang Zhi gritted her teeth: “Yes, I will organize them for you immediately, ma’am.”
Lin Anran glanced at her and scoffed: “So what if I made you pay the two thousand yuan moving fee? It’s not much.”
“Two thousand isn’t much? I don’t know what kind of moving company you hired. It’s such a short distance, and only a few boxes. Why such a price…” She stopped mid-sentence.
What was the point of saying this? She was a pampered young lady born with a silver spoon. She had no concept of price.
Lin Anran: “Why did you suddenly stop talking?”
Jiang Zhi shook her head: “Nothing. I’ll find your pajamas for changing.”
She wanted to ask her which suitcase her clothes were in, but swallowed the words. Given how little Lin Anran did for herself, she probably had no idea where her clothes were. Asking wouldn’t yield anything.
She emptied her own clothes out of the closet and hung up Lin Anran’s clothes.
Lin Anran’s clothes were a completely different style from Jiang Zhi’s. Jiang Zhi’s clothes were mostly black, white, and grey, casual, and focused on comfort. Lin Anran’s clothes, however, were nine out of ten dresses, either red or pink, gorgeous and exquisite.
“Jiang Yi, are you angry?” Lin Anran peeked in from the doorway.
“Huh?” Jiang Zhi didn’t quite understand.
“I will pay you back. Two thousand yuan, and the ninety-nine for the helmet, I’ll pay it all back,” Lin Anran’s tone seemed to carry a hint of caution: “Jiang Yi, don’t be angry.”
Jiang Zhi was surprised. The Miss Lin, whose eyes were usually on the ceiling, was actually showing a moment of weakness and apology…
The moment of weakness lasted only a second. In the next second, she couldn’t maintain it and became fierce: “You’re so petty! It’s just two thousand yuan! Why are you still angry? You’re so stingy. You know how unlikeable you are when you act like this?”
Jiang Zhi was amused by her: “I’m not angry.”
“Really?”
“Fake. Remember to pay me back the money.”
“Hmph.”
The closet in the rental apartment wasn’t large. It was more than enough for Jiang Zhi’s scarce clothing, but it was insufficient for Lin Anran’s clothes.
Why did this person bring so many clothes when she wasn’t planning to stay long-term? There’s no space for them.
Jiang Zhi had no choice but to put all her own clothes away into a suitcase, leaving only a few changes of clothes for herself. The remaining ninety percent of the closet space was given over to Lin Anran’s clothing.
Looking at the full closet, Jiang Zhi felt a strange sense of distraction, though she wasn’t sure what she was distracted by.
Maybe it was the feeling that her home, which had always been hers alone, was no longer so desolate.
This feeling didn’t seem bad.
“Are you done yet? Why are you so slow?” The complaining voice of the young lady came from the living room: “I’m already tired. Haven’t you found my change of clothes yet?”
Retraction. This feeling was actually a little bit bad.
Jiang Zhi finished organizing the clothes and luggage, leaning on her waist, exhausted. She couldn’t help but look resentfully at the person relaxing outside.
What a tragedy. She only agreed to let this young lady stay for the rent subsidy, but after only two days, she was already down two thousand for the moving fee and ninety-nine for the helmet.
Although Lin Anran promised to pay her back, given her forgetful nature—she couldn’t even remember that her name was Jiang Zhi, not Jiang Yi—could she really expect this small fry to be remembered after her “life experience” was over?
No way. She’d waive the service fee, but she needed to ask the company to reimburse her for the money she had paid out tomorrow.
“Hurry up! Why aren’t you ready yet?” The urging sound came again.
“Almost, almost,” Jiang Zhi replied. She opened the last unorganized suitcase. She didn’t find the pajamas. The first thing she saw was…
Tap, tap, tap. Footsteps came from behind her: “You’re so slow! Where are the pajamas? Did you find them?”
Jiang Zhi cleared her throat: “They are in here. Get them yourself.”
Lin Anran: “Why didn’t you just get them for me? You’re so slow when I ask you to do some work.”
Her gaze drifted to the open suitcase. Right on top was a set of pink lace lingerie, a bold and sexy, suggestive style…
The arrogant third Miss Lin froze. A hint of discomfort flashed across her expression: “We’re both girls. Haven’t you seen lingerie before? You’re acting like a pervert, secretly staring at it here.”
Jiang Zhi: “??”
Lin Anran pushed her aside, grabbed the change of clothes, and didn’t forget to close the suitcase before glaring at her: “I’ll organize the things in this suitcase myself later. Don’t touch them.”
Jiang Zhi looked at her, amused.
Lin Anran snorted, holding her clothes, and walked towards the bathroom. She touched her face, which was inexplicably flushed.
After calling the moving company, she asked her housekeeper, Aunt Lin, to help pack the luggage. Who knew Aunt Lin would pack this, and that Jiang Zhi would see it?
She just liked pink things. She liked the color and the embroidery of that lingerie. She had bought it but never worn it.
Splash
Halfway through her shower, she turned off the showerhead, her expression glum.
“It’s all Aunt Lin’s fault! Why did she put everything in? I told her to only pack the clothes I commonly use and wear. Is that something I commonly wear!”
“Will Jiang Zhi think I’m someone who likes to wear strange lingerie?”
