Chapter 47: “Two People Sleeping in an Embrace.”
The two sat on the sofa, facing each other, their reflections mirrored in each other’s eyes.
The ambient temperature rose sharply at that moment, as if it were about to scorch and melt them.
Jiang Zhi pursed her lips, tentatively and carefully leaning closer. She awkwardly tilted her head slightly and closed her eyes.
She pressed her lips against Lin Anran’s.
Before she could feel much, in an instant, they quickly and nervously separated.
Both shy individuals lowered their heads simultaneously, daring not to look at the other.
After a moment to compose herself, Jiang Zhi summoned the courage to look up.
At the same time, Lin Anran also looked up, her hand grasping the corner of the sofa, tightening its grip and leaving wrinkles in the fabric.
When it came to kissing, there was plenty of theoretical knowledge; after all, she had read many novels and watched many TV shows since childhood, witnessing it in both text and visual form.
But theoretical knowledge was one thing, and practical application was quite another.
Both of them were clearly in the novice stage.
The two times Jiang Zhi had kissed her, she had only dared to lightly touch Lin Anran’s lips, afraid of startling her or making her uncomfortable. Yet, in her eyes, Jiang Zhi was far from satisfied with just touching her lips like this.
This kind of kiss was not enough—far from enough.
Jiang Zhi’s breathing was ragged. She leaned toward Lin Anran again, wanting to deepen the kiss.
Halfway through the motion of leaning in, she suddenly remembered something and abruptly stopped.
“Um, I…” Jiang Zhi was slightly embarrassed to say it out loud, and she stood up.
Lin Anran looked up blankly at the person who had suddenly stood up.
“I’m going to brush my teeth,” she said, then turned and rushed toward the bathroom.
She ran all the way into the bathroom and closed the door, not daring to look back at Lin Anran. Stopping a kiss halfway to brush your teeth was truly bizarre…
Jiang Zhi thought she was being neurotic, but she definitely couldn’t skip brushing. After all, they had just finished eating beer duck, which surely had a strong odor.
She didn’t want Lin Anran’s first kiss with her to be a bad experience.
She filled a cup with water, picked up her toothbrush, and put toothpaste on it. Before she could even start brushing, she heard the bathroom door creak open a fraction.
She looked up to see Lin Anran’s small head peering in.
Jiang Zhi and Lin Anran stared wide-eyed at each other.
“What’s wrong?” Jiang Zhi asked, holding the toothbrush in one hand and the cup in the other.
“I need to brush my teeth too,” Lin Anran said.
A deathly silence ensued.
Jiang Zhi broke the silence: “Then come in and brush together?”
Lin Anran nodded, pushed the door open, grabbed her toothbrush, and put toothpaste on it.
And so, their passionate kissing atmosphere instantly turned into a scene of two people brushing their teeth together in the bathroom.
The sight… Jiang Zhi started laughing as she brushed.
Lin Anran looked over. After a moment of silence, she couldn’t help but laugh too.
The sight of them rushing to brush their teeth together just to kiss looked ridiculous.
Brushing their teeth together and laughing together seemed to ease the awkward and shy tension.
They were less nervous, feeling slightly more relaxed.
Spitting out the foam in her mouth, Jiang Zhi smiled and asked: “Do other couples do this when they kiss?”
Lin Anran paused: “Probably.”
“I watch TV, and they kiss anytime, anywhere. I don’t think they go through this process.”
“Well, what do you expect? Are they going to film the scene of them brushing their teeth? That would be weird and a mood killer.”
Jiang Zhi put down her toothbrush and faced Lin Anran: “Are you blaming me for killing the mood?”
Lin Anran glared at her: “Stop talking nonsense…”
Jiang Zhi complied, stopping the nonsense. She removed her distracting black-rimmed glasses, casually placing them on the sink, then slightly bent down and kissed her.
Time seemed to stand still, and the surroundings quieted.
It started with just their lips touching. Then, slowly and tentatively, she licked Lin Anran’s lips, carefully parting them for a clumsy, initial intertwining of their tongues.
Their mouths were filled with the taste of toothpaste—peach-flavored toothpaste, Lin Anran’s favorite flavor, Lin Anran’s scent.
Jiang Zhi felt that she would remember this taste for a very long time.
Perhaps not just a very long time, but a lifetime. Every time she brushed her teeth in the future, she would likely think of Lin Anran, think of this kiss, and think of the peach toothpaste flavor during the kiss.
Since she had to brush her teeth every day, wouldn’t she think of Lin Anran once every day? Thinking of it that way, it seemed particularly wonderful.
The definition of wonderful was broad, and this kiss certainly included that.
It wasn’t the first kiss she imagined. It was interrupted mid-way for a quick toothbrushing session, and the location wasn’t romantic—it was in front of the sink.
But it was more beautiful than she had ever imagined, a heart-stirring kind of beauty.
After the kiss, their foreheads rested against each other, their skin scalding hot, their breaths uneven and intertwined.
Both their faces were flushed with shyness.
“I think my cold isn’t completely gone. Will this infect you?” Jiang Zhi suddenly remembered and worriedly asked.
“Do you think I’m like you, getting a fever and cold at the drop of a hat? Your health is terrible. You’re a sickly mess, always causing trouble,” Lin Anran scoffed.
Jiang Zhi gently rubbed her forehead against Lin Anran’s: “Then I’ll exercise more in the future and try not to be a Trouble-Maker.”
Lin Anran’s lips slightly curved: “Trouble-Maker, I like it.”
The person who always claimed she didn’t like things, finally said, “I like it.”
At midnight, Jiang Zhi lay on the sofa, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.
Not only couldn’t she sleep, but scenes from the day kept replaying in her mind like a movie.
Lin Anran searching for the wristband under the bridge, Lin Anran watching over her when she was sick with a fever, and… Lin Anran’s shy, innocent face during the kiss.
It was an ordinary day, yet so many things had happened.
Every scene felt etched into her mind, repeatedly replaying and savoring, keeping her awake long into the night.
Meanwhile, Lin Anran, sleeping in the bedroom, was no better off.
She rolled around on the bed, occasionally and involuntarily touching her lips, recalling certain events, and letting out silly, muffled giggles.
Finally, she buried her whole head in the pillow, making strange “ah-ah-woo-woo” sounds.
She excitedly rolled left and right on the bed.
“Thud”
She fell off the bed.
The room’s soundproofing wasn’t great. Jiang Zhi vaguely heard the noise, half-sat up, and looked toward the bedroom.
Was Lin Anran still awake?
Was she suffering from insomnia like Jiang Zhi?
Thinking this, a sweetness welled up in Jiang Zhi’s heart, as if wrapped in honey.
“Creak”
The bedroom door suddenly opened.
Hearing the movement, Jiang Zhi quickly lay down, closed her eyes, and pretended to be asleep.
With her eyes closed, her hearing became exceptionally sharp. Even though the person coming out of the room stepped very lightly, Jiang Zhi could hear everything clearly.
The footsteps slowly approached, stopping by the sofa. The person seemed to have knelt down.
A fingertip gently touched her cheek. Lin Anran’s sharp nails brushed her cheek, feeling slightly ticklish and slightly prickly.
The fingertip’s touch didn’t last long. Lin Anran quickly withdrew her hand, followed immediately by a light kiss on her lips.
A soft sensation, carrying the sweet scent of peach.
She was kissed once, then a second time, a third, a fourth, a fifth… all within a second.
Is she a woodpecker? Jiang Zhi secretly laughed.
After an unknown number of pecks, Jiang Zhi couldn’t pretend to sleep anymore and opened her eyes.
Her gaze met that of the person about to steal her $n^{th}$ kiss.
In the darkness, the air was silent for a few seconds.
Lin Anran blinked twice and immediately turned the blame: “Why were you pretending to sleep if you were awake? Are you sick?”
Jiang Zhi pulled her closer. Lin Anran lost her balance and tumbled onto the sofa, landing on top of Jiang Zhi.
“Can’t sleep?” Jiang Zhi raised her hand and gently caressed her cheek.
“I am not sleepless! I slept soundly. I just got up to drink water,” Lin Anran insisted stubbornly, not admitting anything.
Jiang Zhi was the complete opposite; she wasn’t stubborn at all, being direct and honest: “But I haven’t been able to sleep. I’ve had insomnia for an hour. Do you know why I can’t sleep?”
Lin Anran: “Why?”
Jiang Zhi: “I’m too excited, so I can’t sleep. Having a girlfriend feels so surreal. I’m afraid I’ll wake up and she’ll be gone.”
Lin Anran was delighted and laughed out loud: “Look at how pathetic you are, losing sleep over something so small. You’re useless.”
“You weren’t asleep either, yet you call me pathetic.”
“Who said I couldn’t sleep? I slept soundly!”
Jiang Zhi propped herself up and gently pecked her awkward lips.
Lin Anran looked slightly stunned, then her lips uncontrollably stretched into a wide smile. Her pleasure was evident on her face.
“The room is pitch black. I don’t like it,” Lin Anran said.
“Then turn on the light. I’m not that stingy about electricity.”
“The room is too small. I don’t like it.”
“It’s always been small. It’s not the first day you’ve stayed here.”
“I just don’t like it, I don’t like it. I don’t want to go back to sleep there.”
Jiang Zhi laughed softly: “I think my sofa is quite large. Do you want to sleep here?”
Lin Anran: “I guess it’s barely adequate.”
As she spoke, she eagerly burrowed under the blanket, curling up in Jiang Zhi’s arms.
Jiang Zhi embraced the person in her arms: “Don’t you feel crowded?”
Lin Anran, afraid she would change her mind, immediately scolded her fiercely: “Shut up! Don’t talk anymore! I need to sleep. You’re so noisy when you keep talking.”
Ignoring the available bed in the bedroom, the two squeezed onto the sofa, falling asleep in each other’s arms.
The first ray of morning light shone into the living room, filling the space with warmth.
Jiang Zhi slowly opened her eyes, looking down to see the person in her arms buried against her chest, sleeping soundly.
In the morning sun, Lin Anran’s skin was fair and delicate, her eyelashes dark and thick, like delicate fans, gently fluttering.
She was beautiful like a painting, a heart-stirring painting.
Jiang Zhi subconsciously tightened her embrace slightly, gently rubbing her cheek against the top of Lin Anran’s head. Her heart felt full and overflowing, wrapped in happiness and contentment.
Unwilling to wake her, she held her quietly, waiting for her to wake up.
The wait wasn’t long. Jiang Zhi regretted that she woke up too soon.
The princess hummed softly, rubbed her eyes, and sleepily woke up.
Hearing her gentle sounds, Jiang Zhi’s heart melted into sweetness.
“You’re awake,” Jiang Zhi said gently.
“Mhm…” Lin Anran was lazy.
Jiang Zhi kissed her forehead: “What do you want for breakfast?”
Lin Anran still only gave a lazy “Mhm,” looking barely awake.
She was half-asleep and half-awake, looking particularly endearing.
Unable to resist, Jiang Zhi kissed her forehead again: “You can sleep a little longer. It’s still early. No need to rush to get up.”
