Chapter 33: “Is it a Flutter of the Heart or Being Charmed by Beauty?”
Late at night, the room was pitch black. Lin Anran was nestled under the duvet, the faint fluorescent light of her phone screen reflecting on her delicate face.
She stared intently at the phone screen, her expression serious, occasionally frowning, and sometimes rolling her eyes in contemplation.
It looked like she was studying an extremely difficult subject.
She was chatting with an “emotional expert,” a pay-by-the-hour “emotional expert.”
Lin Anran: The method you taught me yesterday didn’t work… are you a fraud?!
Not only did it not work, but it made the atmosphere super awkward, mainly because she hadn’t expected the towel to be pulled off.
It was all Jiang Yi, that unsophisticated person’s fault, for insisting on putting her jacket on her. She was really sick. All her little schemes were completely wasted on a blind person.
Emotional Expert: It’s impossible for it not to work. If the towel accidentally came off under those circumstances, the effect would only be better. If you don’t believe me, go out and look. She’s definitely not asleep right now.
Just trust me and follow my instructions. I guarantee you’ll succeed!
Lin Anran looked at the messages with skepticism.
She put down her phone and looked toward the door.
Hesitating for two seconds, she flipped over and got out of bed, opening the door quietly, peering out like a thief.
The person on the sofa was bundled under the quilt, completely motionless.
She’s definitely not awake. She’s sleeping like the dead.
Lin Anran looked at the person on the sofa with dissatisfaction, then turned her dissatisfaction to her phone.
This person was a liar, teaching methods that were completely useless and wasting her time.
Jiang Yi hadn’t reacted at all, wasn’t losing sleep. She was sleeping like a log.
Unacceptable. Too angry.
Lin Anran rushed out, blindly kicked the sofa twice with a “bang, bang,” woke up the person on the sofa, and then let out a humph before leaving, feeling satisfied.
She left a bewildered Jiang Yi behind, contemplating the meaning of life.
Lin Anran was furious, deleted the scammer, but not before cursing at them a dozen times.
A couple of days later, Lin Anran, unwilling to give up, found a new emotional expert. She felt this one was more reliable than the last, looking very professional. Therefore, she learned a new trick from the new expert.
On Sunday, with nothing to do, Lin Anran wandered around the living room in a pink nightgown, holding a coffee cup.
Jiang Yi was mopping the floor. Seeing this scene, she couldn’t help but worry: “It’s already evening. Don’t drink coffee. You won’t be able to sleep, and then you’ll be wandering around outside in the middle of the night.”
Lin Anran scoffed, displeased: “You’re begrudging me a cup of coffee. Stop being so petty.”
Jiang Yi was helpless: “Am I begrudging the coffee? It’s fine if you can’t sleep and wander around late, but you drag me out every time to keep you company.”
Who could handle that?
“Enough. You’re so long-winded. Don’t say such useless nonsense. I don’t like listening to it. Shut up,” Lin Anran sat on the sofa with her coffee, chin slightly raised, looking arrogant.
The clumsy performance began.
Her hand tilted, and the coffee accidentally spilled, accompanied by a little “Oh no,” and a hand covering her mouth to enhance the sense of accident.
Hearing the commotion, Jiang Yi put down what she was doing and rushed over: “What’s wrong? Did you burn yourself?”
Jiang Yi grabbed Lin Anran’s hand to check, her face filled with anxiety.
Lin Anran looked at the person worrying about her, a smile playing on her lips, feeling a surge of joy.
There was no coffee splashed on her hand. Jiang Yi sighed in relief, then had the leisure to look at the ravaged sofa.
An entire cup of coffee was spilled on the sofa, creating a complete mess.
She quickly grabbed tissues to wipe it up. Tissues didn’t work, so she went to the bathroom for a towel, but neither method was effective.
In this state, there was no way to sleep on the sofa tonight.
“I kind of feel like you did that on purpose. You were holding it fine, why would you spill it on the sofa?” Jiang Yi reacted, looking suspicious.
“What are you saying? This was an accident. Don’t be a conspiracy theorist,” Lin Anran said, casually tucking her hair behind her ear.
“Although you could sleep on the floor, that would make me seem mean. Someone as kind as me naturally wouldn’t be cruel to you. I can share half the bed with you. I’ll allow you to sleep on the bed.”
Jiang Yi’s mouth twitched twice. The way she said that, Jiang Yi almost thought she was the owner of the house and Jiang Yi was the guest.
Lin Anran stopped drinking coffee and walked toward the room, adding a condescending invitation: “Come in and sleep. I’ll make do with the inconvenience.”
Looking at the mess on the sofa, Jiang Yi sighed softly.
Lin Anran truly had a new trick every day. She simply loved to stir up trouble. Jiang Yi was certain that she had deliberately spilled the coffee on the sofa.
Jiang Yi didn’t plan on sleeping in the bed and prepared to make do on the floor for the night.
She cleaned the floor, laid down a blanket, and finally put down a quilt. Actually, sleeping like this wasn’t worse than sleeping on the sofa.
Before she could lie down, the room door opened, and Lin Anran burst out, staring in shock at the bed prepared on the floor.
What is Jiang Yi doing? Is she crazy? I told her to sleep in the bed. Why is she making a bed on the floor? She’s ruining my plan.
Jiang Yi explained: “The bed is only so big. It’s too crowded if I sleep on it. I’ll just manage on the floor for one night.”
Lin Anran shot her a fierce glare.
“I didn’t get to drink the coffee earlier, so I’m going to brew another cup,” Lin Anran said, eyes rolling.
“Why do you insist on drinking coffee in the middle of the night?”
“Don’t be so stingy. A cup of coffee won’t cost you much money.”
Lin Anran ignored the advice and ran to the kitchen to brew coffee. Jiang Yi quickly followed to help, afraid she might burn herself.
She brewed a cup and handed it to her. Lin Anran didn’t drink it but just held the cup and wandered around the living room.
Jiang Yi ignored her, lay down, and prepared to sleep.
But the person constantly wandering nearby gave Jiang Yi a bad feeling.
The facts proved Jiang Yi’s premonition was accurate, as Lin Anran accidentally spilled the coffee on her quilt again.
“Oh no, why is the coffee cup so slippery? Didn’t you wash the cup properly? That’s your problem. Since it’s your problem, don’t complain. I don’t like listening to it. Shut up.”
Jiang Yi felt a lump in her chest, so frustrated that she couldn’t breathe properly.
What could she say? Facing this living ancestor, what could she say? She could only accept it.
After causing trouble, Lin Anran put down the cup—not having drunk a drop of coffee—and returned to the room with a pleasant mood.
Jiang Yi looked at the sofa, then at the freshly laid quilt on the floor, and finally grabbed her pillow and headed to the room.
Lin Anran was currently half-sitting in bed, glancing at the incoming person: “You go out. I don’t want you to sleep in my bed now. Go sleep on your floor.”
Jiang Yi ignored her words and asked directly: “Do you want to sleep on the inside or the outside?”
Lin Anran, who had just tried to kick her out, immediately scooted over: “I like sleeping on the inside. You sleep on the outside.”
Lin Anran’s face showed nonchalance, but in reality, she was watching expectantly with her peripheral vision. When she saw Jiang Yi put down her pillow, the corner of her mouth involuntarily curled up in a tiny arc.
Jiang Yi crawled under the covers, lay down, and then slowly said: “You care about me and think I’m uncomfortable sleeping on the sofa, so you wanted me to sleep in the bed. You could have just said so directly.”
“Don’t go through so many complicated steps. This just adds a lot of burden for me. Tomorrow I have to clean the sofa and wash the quilt. It’s exhausting. I know you care about me…”
Lin Anran’s beautiful eyes flashed fiercely, and she immediately retorted: “Who cares about you? Don’t flatter yourself. If you have a problem with your brain, go get it treated. Don’t say such inexplicable things. I don’t like it.”
Jiang Yi looked at her helplessly. Why did she always have “I don’t like it” on her lips?
Lin Anran scoffed, childishly tracing a line on the duvet with her finger: “See this? This is the dividing line. Don’t cross it. You sleep there, and I sleep here. I advise you to stick to the rules.”
Jiang Yi wanted to laugh: “Got it. I won’t cross the line. Let’s sleep. I’m tired. I’m turning off the light.”
She hit the switch, and the room plunged into darkness.
Jiang Yi had never slept with anyone else and felt unaccustomed. Just as she was adjusting, Lin Anran’s chattering voice started up.
“I’m warning you not to cross the line. You’re an exhibitionist. Don’t take off your clothes in your sleep. I don’t like that about you. Be mindful.”
“Also, you seem to have voyeuristic tendencies. Don’t peek at me in your sleep. Be mindful.”
“Why aren’t you talking? Did you fall asleep so quickly…”
The chattering voice was endless.
However, Jiang Yi was already accustomed to these sounds. Consequently, the noise was not only non-disruptive but actually quite conducive to sleep.
She fell into slumber shortly after.
But she didn’t sleep well that night. It felt like she was dreaming, yet not quite.
She felt like she was tied up by something, unable to move. No matter how much she struggled, it was useless, and the binding only got tighter.
When she woke up, it was already morning. She looked down and saw that the person who had sternly warned her not to cross the dividing line had actively crossed it.
Not only had she crossed the line, but she was pressed tightly against her.
Jiang Yi finally understood why she had felt bound last night. Lin Anran was nestled in her arms, her hands tightly wrapped around Jiang Yi’s waist.
When Jiang Yi tried to gently push her away, the sleeping person gave a dissatisfied grunt and hugged her even tighter.
She seemed to be dreaming of something. Her nose rubbed against Jiang Yi’s neck, an act of dependency, like a kitten.
Jiang Yi involuntarily softened her breathing, looking down at the person in her arms.
A ray of morning light shone on Lin Anran’s pale, delicate face. Her exquisite features made her seem like someone not of this world.
She looked like a princess who had stepped out of an anime and mistakenly entered the mortal world, allowing Jiang Yi, a mere mortal, the privilege of witnessing her.
Her heartbeat became briefly irregular.
The person in her arms’ eyelashes fluttered, and she slowly opened her eyes.
Lin Anran’s eyes were blurry with sleep. She slightly raised her head, and in a beam of morning light, their eyes met.
Her irregular heartbeat began to accelerate, thump-thump.
Jiang Yi was a little unsure if the feeling at the moment was a flutter of the heart or if she was simply being charmed by beauty.
Or perhaps both.
“Why did you cross the line? You’re so inconsiderate,” a challenging question broke the initial atmosphere.
Before that one could sink in, another followed: “Why are you still holding me? Don’t lean so close to me. Get away.”
Jiang Yi was somewhat impressed by her ability to speak nonsense with her eyes open. It was clearly she who had crossed the line, and she who was holding on to Jiang Yi.
The facts were right there, but Lin Anran somehow managed to turn black into white.
After challenging Jiang Yi, Lin Anran stylishly prepared to get out of bed.
Jiang Yi suddenly grabbed her wrist.
Lin Anran looked back, puzzled: “What are you doing…”
Before she could finish, she was forcefully pulled back onto the bed.
“You said I crossed the line and hugged you. If I don’t make this true, I would have been falsely accused by you for nothing.”
Jiang Yi wrapped her arms around Lin Anran’s waist, bringing her face closer. The gentleness faded from her eyes, replaced by a trace of unfamiliar aggression.
