Chapter 27: “The Little Kitten Who is Both Wronged and Afraid.”
In the early morning, sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the room. All things revived, and a new day unfolded its prelude.
The person in the bed lazily turned over, rubbed her eyes, and muddledly sat up.
Her messy hair stood up in a little point. Her left hand was missing from her sleeve, trapped inside her pajamas. She struggled for a while before pulling her hand out of the sleeve, looking quite adorable.
Squinting at the window, Where is this?
After recalling for a while, she remembered—this was Jiang Yi’s house. Lin Anran instantly shook off her drowsiness, a smile spreading across her face. She happily put on her shoes and got out of bed.
She ran to the door, ready to go out and find Jiang Yi.
Suddenly, her movements stopped. The hand resting on the doorknob retracted.
No, I can’t go out like this. She turned back and stood in front of the window, carefully examining her reflection.
Her hair was messy. She reached out and smoothed it down a couple of times. Her collar was crooked. She reached out and adjusted it a couple of times.
After a quick tidy-up, her image looked much better, but it wasn’t enough. She rushed to the desk, rummaged through her bag for makeup, applied lipstick, drew eyeliner…
She felt she had to maintain a perfect image in front of Jiang Yi.
Lin Anran held a small mirror, admiring her fake bare-face look for a while. This makeup was very nice; she was very satisfied with it.
When Jiang Yi saw her later, she would surely be stunned, completely captivated…
Lin Anran confidently raised her eyebrows, put away the small mirror, and walked out full of confidence.
She was confident, but as soon as she reached the door, half her confidence inexplicably vanished.
Does this bumpkin Jiang Yi even have the taste to appreciate it? Can I really charm her? Yesterday, I deliberately wore a suit, and Jiang Yi actually said I was dressed strangely. What a tasteless person.
Thinking about it made her a bit angry. She kicked the door open and walked toward the living room.
The living room was quiet, empty. Jiang Yi was nowhere to be seen in the kitchen either.
Lin Anran’s expression froze, and she instantly panicked.
Where did Jiang Yi go? Why did she leave me alone in the house!
She was angry, wronged, and scared. She hated being alone in a house the most. Jiang Yi was a wicked, black-hearted scoundrel.
But her fear didn’t last long. Her gaze swept to the sofa, where she saw a human-shaped lump curled up under a blanket.
Jiang Yi was still sleeping! The person who usually got up on time for work was actually sleeping in today.
She walked over and kicked the sofa: “Why aren’t you getting up? Aren’t you working today?”
The person on the sofa didn’t move or respond.
Thump, thump.
Lin Anran kicked the sofa twice more in dissatisfaction: “Why are you sleeping like a pig? I can’t even wake you up.”
“Cough, cough.”
A few low, hoarse coughs came from under the blanket.
Lin Anran, who was about to kick the sofa again, immediately stopped when she heard the coughing.
She reached out and yanked the blanket off Jiang Yi’s head: “What’s wrong with you? Why are you coughing? Are you sick?”
Jiang Yi opened her eyes with difficulty, her brows tightly furrowed, her cheeks flushed with a sickly redness, and her voice hoarse: “I’m fine, just feeling a bit dizzy. I’ll lie down for a while.”
Lin Anran tilted her head, observing her.
“Dizzy? Why are you dizzy?”
“Why aren’t you talking? Why are your eyes closed? Are you unconscious?”
“Did she really faint? No, I need to call 110. No, wait, 120…”
When Lin Anran got anxious, her words became even denser and more chattering.
Jiang Yi opened her eyes and sighed tiredly: “Please be quiet. I just have a slight cold.”
Lin Anran quieted down, stopped making noise, and started pacing around the sofa, back and forth, nonstop.
She would pace for a bit, look at Jiang Yi, pace for a bit, and look at Jiang Yi again, visibly anxious.
After being exposed to the cold wind yesterday, Lin Anran, the delicate one, didn’t catch a cold, but Jiang Yi, the tough one, did.
Jiang Yi propped herself up and sat up: “My dear young miss, please stop walking around me. You’re making me even dizzier.”
Lin Anran stopped pacing, bent over, and leaned in close, carefully examining her complexion: “Are you running a fever?”
Her face suddenly came close, and Jiang Yi instinctively held her breath.
Looking at the face so close—the trembling eyelashes, the slightly parted pink lips… Jiang Yi swallowed hard on her dry throat and looked away.
She pushed Lin Anran back: “It’s just a small cold, I’m fine. Don’t get too close to me; you might catch it.”
Lin Anran’s delicate eyebrows furrowed. Jiang Yi’s face was red; she clearly had a fever.
“You need to go to the hospital,” Lin Anran said.
“No need,” Jiang Yi smiled weakly: “It’s not that serious. I’ll be fine after I rest. I just can’t make you breakfast. You can fix yourself something to eat later, or go out.”
Jiang Yi braced her weak body, picked up her phone, and called the magazine office to request leave, then called the convenience store to request leave.
In this state today, she couldn’t work; she was forced to rest.
Since it was a last-minute request, the attitude on the other end was not great. Jiang Yi forced a smile, apologized, and only then managed to successfully arrange her leave so she could rest in peace.
Lin Anran pulled her lips down: “You’re sick! Taking leave is only right. Why do you apologize to people? You are not allowed to apologize!”
Jiang Yi looked at her weakly and helplessly: “Work duties are fixed. If I take sudden leave, they will have trouble coordinating the work and will naturally have some opinions. It’s reasonable and proper for me to apologize. This is normal.”
Lin Anran: “Stop talking. You sound so weak. Don’t talk so much that you actually faint. If you really faint, I won’t take care of you.”
Jiang Yi looked at her with amusement. She knew Lin Anran was showing concern, but her way of showing concern was a bit different from most people’s and required reverse interpretation.
Jiang Yi propped herself up on the sofa and stood up with difficulty, slowly shuffling toward the door, coughing occasionally.
Lin Anran followed closely, anxiously saying: “Where are you going? You should lie down and rest when you’re sick. Why are you moving around?”
“The cold medicine and fever reducers are in the drawer by the door. I need to find some medicine to take,” Jiang Yi explained to her.
Lin Anran replied with an “Oh.”
Jiang Yi opened the drawer, found the cold medicine, checked the dosage instructions, and confirmed how many pills of each she needed to take.
Lin Anran stood next to her like a statue, staring unblinkingly.
Jiang Yi smiled: “If you really want to help, if you want to take care of me, go get me a glass of water. I need water to take the medicine.”
The young miss fundamentally didn’t know how to take care of people; she only knew how to be anxious and stare. If she wasn’t given instructions, she wouldn’t know what to do.
Sure enough, as soon as Jiang Yi gave an instruction, Lin Anran immediately scurried to the kitchen, poured a glass of water, and hurriedly brought it to her.
She handed it to her and said, “Here’s the water. Take your medicine quickly.”
Jiang Yi felt slightly comforted. It was rare; she actually got to drink water poured by the young miss…
She tossed the pills into her mouth and washed them down with water.
The medicine had just been swallowed when she heard Lin Anran urgently ask: “Do you feel better now? Are you getting better? You should be better, right? You must be better. Quickly say you’re better.”
Oh, dear…
Jiang Yi felt like laughing: “It’s not a miracle cure. How could it work this fast?”
“Then when will you be better?”
“If you don’t make noise, I might get better faster.”
Normally, if she said something like that, Lin Anran would definitely throw a tantrum and possibly curse, but today, she was surprisingly obedient.
She didn’t get angry or curse; she just nodded obediently, indicating she wouldn’t make noise.
Jiang Yi lay down to rest. Lin Anran brought over a small stool, sat beside her, and stared.
Jiang Yi was amused by her staring: “Go entertain yourself. Don’t keep watching me. I’m not going to suddenly disappear.”
Lin Anran: “No.”
“I’ll be fine if I lie down and sleep for a bit. You don’t need to keep staring at me.”
“No.”
Jiang Yi couldn’t persuade her and didn’t have the energy to try. Her head was severely heavy, and she quickly fell into a hazy state as soon as her head hit the pillow.
She rarely caught colds or fevers. Yesterday, she gave her jacket to Lin Anran and rode the scooter home against the wind all the way, likely catching a chill during that process.
In her haze, she didn’t know how long she slept, but she kept hearing Lin Anran’s questioning voice intermittently.
It was nothing more than “Are you better yet?” or “Why aren’t you better yet?”
However, these questions weren’t bothersome; they were rather comforting.
In Jiang Yi’s few experiences with sickness, she had always been alone. In the empty rental apartment, she would curl up in bed by herself, taking medicine, resting, and recovering.
The surrounding environment then was quiet to the point of deadly silence. When her body ached, she would always wonder if she would quietly sink into that silence forever and never wake up.
Now, there was someone beside her. Although this person didn’t know how to care for the sick at all, she didn’t need her to be an expert. Her presence alone was the best care.
Jiang Yi was somewhat touched, especially since Lin Anran stayed by her side the entire time.
Of course, it would be even better if Lin Anran didn’t check her pulse by placing her finger under Jiang Yi’s nose every so often, testing if she was still breathing, if she was dead or not…
Jiang Yi didn’t know what Lin Anran’s thought process was—could she really die suddenly while sleeping…
The next time Lin Anran checked her breathing with her finger, the person on the sofa suddenly “played dead” and opened her eyes, grabbing the finger placed under her nose.
Unfortunately, this didn’t scare Lin Anran. Instead, Lin Anran’s eyes lit up: “You’re awake! You’re better! Are you better? You should be better, right? You must be better. Hurry and say you’re better.”
Seriously…
Jiang Yi felt like laughing: “I’m almost better. Also, stop testing if I’m breathing. I’m alive and well; I won’t die anytime soon.”
Lin Anran blinked guiltily: “I wasn’t worried about whether you would die! Don’t overthink things.”
Jiang Yi understood her subtext and translated her words directly, answering accordingly: “I’m feeling much better. You don’t have to worry.”
“Who was worried about you? Don’t flatter yourself.”
“You don’t have to keep watching over me. Go rest too. You must be tired.”
“A sick person shouldn’t talk so much nonsense. Besides, I just like sitting here. Who is watching over you? Stop being so arrogant.”
Lin Anran insisted on sitting on the small stool, guarding her side without leaving. Jiang Yi had no choice but to let her be.
Although she had slept for a long time, she fell asleep again shortly after. Perhaps it was the effect of the medicine that made her feel drowsy.
After Jiang Yi fell asleep, Lin Anran first checked her forehead to see if the fever had broken, and then checked her breathing to see if she was…
Everything was normal. Her temperature had returned to normal, and she was still breathing.
Lin Anran breathed a sigh of relief. Taking care of a patient was exhausting. Jiang Yi had better only get sick this one time and never again. It was really troublesome, really tiring. She was worn out.
Half an hour later, she extended her finger and checked Jiang Yi’s breathing again.
Hmm, good, still alive.
The person in a deep sleep seemed to feel warm and pushed her hand out from under the blanket.
Lin Anran’s gaze narrowed, falling on her wrist—the red string bracelet.
She poked the bracelet, scoffed with dissatisfaction, and muttered: “I haven’t seen the person who gave you this bracelet come and take care of you. I’m the one taking care of you, aren’t I? Don’t talk to that person again, okay?”
She felt very annoyed seeing the bracelet. She simply tucked Jiang Yi’s hand back under the blanket—out of sight, out of mind.
But Jiang Yi, as if deliberately opposing her, pulled her hand out of the blanket again shortly after.
The bright red bracelet reappeared before her eyes.
Lin Anran glared: “Don’t test my patience. Do you believe I’ll find a pair of scissors and cut it off?”
She said it menacingly, but Lin Anran knew that Jiang Yi valued this bracelet greatly. Not to mention cutting it off, even mentioning it slightly would make her unhappy. If she actually cut it, Jiang Yi might never speak to her again.
Lin Anran puffed up her cheeks, staring at the bracelet resentfully, for a full minute.
Is this bracelet that important?
Who was the woman with the matching red bracelet whom Jiang Yi left the convenience store with that day?
Was she a girlfriend? It didn’t seem like a girlfriend, because Jiang Yi never mentioned it. If they were dating, she wouldn’t logically keep quiet about it.
If not a girlfriend, was she someone Jiang Yi secretly loved?
It seemed that neither scenario was pleasing or made her happy.
Lin Anran sat on the small stool, resting her head on the edge of the sofa, poking the bracelet idly with her finger.
While Lin Anran was focused on poking the bracelet, Jiang Yi had already woken up.
The first thing she saw upon opening her eyes was a small kitten crouched beside the sofa, tickling her wrist?
It didn’t look like she was tickling her; she seemed to be playing with the bracelet on her wrist.
Jiang Yi didn’t disturb her, watching her poke, allowing her to poke. Every time she poked the bracelet, Jiang Yi’s heart softened a bit.
People say that when you’re sick, you are at your most vulnerable and easily moved. Jiang Yi had not understood this saying before, but now she was experiencing it firsthand.
She really was quite touched… her heart felt warm.
“Is it fun?” Jiang Yi suddenly spoke.
Lin Anran’s action of poking the bracelet froze. She quickly withdrew her finger and sat up straight, her eyes darting left and right. She was in a state of panic and fear.
Jiang Yi looked at her in confusion. What was wrong with her?
“I just poked the bracelet lightly. I didn’t do anything else. I didn’t break it,” Lin Anran quickly explained.
A question mark appeared over Jiang Yi’s head.
Lin Anran misunderstood Jiang Yi’s expression at the moment, thinking she was angry. She looked at her nervously, shrinking her neck in fear.
Every time the bracelet was involved, Jiang Yi would get very angry. Lin Anran instinctively felt that she would be angry this time too.
Seeing Jiang Yi remain silent, Lin Anran pouted wrongly, weakly and quietly promising: “At most, I won’t poke your bracelet anymore.”
Don’t be angry.
When Jiang Yi got angry, her face would be cold, which was terrifying and scary.
Lin Anran didn’t like and was afraid of seeing Jiang Yi angry.
