Chapter 22: “You Can Do Whatever You Want to Me.”
It was 11:30 PM. Having finished her convenience store shift, Jiang Zhi arrived home and collapsed onto the sofa.
She was so sleepy her eyes were barely open. She wanted to sleep immediately, but she hadn’t showered yet.
She fought the drowsiness while debating internally: Shower first? Or just sleep?
Ultimately, the former won. She struggled to climb off the sofa to shower. Not showering made her feel sticky and unable to sleep soundly.
The shower didn’t wash away the sleepiness. She yawned incessantly, practically squinting as she returned to her room.
She lay on the bed, covered herself with the blanket, and sighed contentedly.
Finally, she could sleep. She closed her eyes peacefully.
“Bang, bang, bang”
As soon as her eyes closed and she was drifting off, she was jolted awake by a series of frantic door kicks.
Jiang Zhi opened her eyes and sighed. She didn’t even need to open the door to know who it was.
Choosing to kick instead of knock, it could only be Lin Anran.
Jiang Zhi struggled to climb out of bed, went to the door, and opened it. As expected, she saw an exquisite and glamorous beauty with long, wavy hair past her waist, wearing a pink princess dress.
“Why are you here again?” Jiang Zhi leaned lazily against the door, speechless.
She asked this because Lin Anran’s uninvited visits had become too frequent lately—almost every day.
And every time she came, she had to find a reason she thought was perfectly legitimate.
The day before yesterday, she said: “I was just passing by and decided to drop in. Don’t overthink it.”
The day before that, she said: “See? My new manicure. A bumpkin like you has probably never seen such beautiful nails. I specifically came to show you the world.”
Yesterday, she said…
Jiang Zhi wondered what the reason would be today.
But clearly, Lin Anran, standing at the door, hadn’t thought of a reason yet. Her eyes were darting around, frantically searching for an excuse.
Finally, she found one. Instantly, her lack of justification was replaced by a surge of righteous indignation.
Miss Lin pointed to the pink plush toy on the sofa: “Isn’t that my bear? Why didn’t you proactively return it to me? I had to specifically come to pick it up. You are so inconsiderate.”
Excellent, she found another reason. Today, she came to retrieve her plush bear.
Jiang Zhi stepped aside: “Please come in. Take the plush bear and go home quickly. I’m very sleepy and don’t have time to play with you.”
Lin Anran had been showing up every night recently, forcing Jiang Zhi to stay up late for days. She was severely sleep-deprived and couldn’t take it anymore, so she had to usher her guest out quickly.
Lin Anran was quite displeased with her eagerness to see her off. She stepped forward, deliberately bumping Jiang Zhi’s shoulder, making her stagger.
Jiang Zhi: “…”
Once inside, Lin Anran wasn’t in a hurry to take the plush bear. She just looked around, as if conducting an inspection.
“Are you done checking? There can’t possibly be anyone else inside. What exactly are you checking every time you come over?”
“Stop rushing me,” Lin Anran glared at her: “You’re so rude. A guest comes over, and you don’t even know how to entertain them. You have the nerve to call me rude. Look who’s talking.”
Jiang Zhi looked at her helplessly: “I’m sleepy, my dear young lady. You don’t have to work during the day, but I do…”
Lin Anran showed disdain: “What’s the point of a job that only earns you pennies? Quit.”
Always telling her to quit, Jiang Zhi leaned against the door and shrugged: “I can’t quit. If I quit, how will I live? By drinking the northwest wind?”
Lin Anran squinted at her: “You can try to please me. Maybe if I’m in a good mood, I’ll give a pauper like you some money. It’ll definitely be more than you earn working.”
“Pleasing you is not an easy task. It consumes too much mental energy. I’d rather work,” Jiang Zhi yawned, lying back on the sofa, “If you’re not leaving, entertain yourself. I’m not keeping you company. I’m going to sleep.”
Lin Anran looked at her, lifted her chin, and snorted: “So you mean you want me to stay? I don’t want to sleep in this shabby place, but fine, since you insist, I’ll reluctantly stay for one night.”
As she spoke, she kicked the sofa.
Jiang Zhi opened her eyes and smiled: “If you want to stay, then stay. I earnestly invite you, please, stay, stay.”
Lin Anran: “Since I have to rough it here for one night, I can’t be too casual. Go change the blanket on your bed for me. The color is too old-fashioned. I don’t like it.”
Jiang Zhi rolled over, refusing: “I’m letting you sleep in the bed. Don’t be so picky about the rest. Just make do.”
Looking at Jiang Zhi, who had rolled over and turned her back, Lin Anran grumbled and cursed a few times before reluctantly going into the room.
Jiang Zhi breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, peace. It was truly difficult to finally get some sleep.
Jiang Zhi strongly suspected that this young lady probably hadn’t made many friends growing up. Suddenly having a new friend like herself, she found it novel and fun, couldn’t control herself, and was perhaps a little too enthusiastic, harassing her every day.
Lin Anran, who harassed her every day, was currently inspecting the room.
The room was tiny, with not much to check, but that didn’t stop her from inspecting it, looking around everywhere.
She opened the closet. Inside hung Lin Anran’s clothes. Jiang Zhi hadn’t put them away.
Even though Lin Anran didn’t live here anymore, her clothes remained, as if Jiang Zhi was always ready to welcome her back.
Lin Anran was quite pleased with this.
The closet was ninety percent Lin Anran’s clothes, and the remaining ten percent, tucked into a corner, were a few pitiful pieces of Jiang Zhi’s clothing.
Lin Anran lightly touched Jiang Zhi’s clothes twice. They were dull and plain—always white shirts, and the shirt styles were the most basic and common kind.
“So rustic. None of her clothes are good-looking,” Lin Anran commented, then closed the closet, satisfied.
The room inspection was nearly complete, although besides the closet, there wasn’t much else to see in the room.
Whatever, time to sleep.
Lin Anran wasn’t happy with the blanket’s old-fashioned pattern, but when she actually lay down, she caught a faint scent that belonged to Jiang Zhi.
Perhaps it wasn’t Jiang Zhi’s personal scent, but the residual fragrance of laundry detergent.
Jiang Zhi often carried this clean scent, giving off a feeling of sunshine and freshness.
Lin Anran kicked the blanket away: “What a strange smell. It stinks.”
A moment later, she pulled the blanket back, buried her head in it, and sniffed repeatedly.
She occasionally rolled around in the blanket, chuckling happily, God knows what she was giggling about.
A few minutes later, the person buried in the blanket felt stuffy and poked her head out.
It was already midnight, but her wide, blinking eyes showed no sign of sleepiness.
She took out her phone, opened the browser, hesitated for a long time, and finally typed in a search.
[Why do I find a person’s scent so pleasant]
[Why do I suddenly want to bite a person]
[Why does my heart beat faster when she gets close to me]
Actually, this wasn’t the first time Lin Anran had searched for such questions, but that didn’t stop her from searching repeatedly.
The answer provided by the internet was liking them.
Liking them?
Liking that clumsy, petty pauper?
Impossible. Absolutely impossible.
She enjoyed searching these questions, but that didn’t stop her from denying the results.
She tossed her phone aside, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
Late in the night, the person who couldn’t sleep in the room quietly and sneakily slipped out.
This time, it wasn’t to sneak coffee; this time, it was for…
Lin Anran stood by the sofa, tilting her head, watching the person lying on the sofa thoughtfully.
The living room lights were off, so she could only rely on the faint moonlight outside the window to see. To see more clearly, Lin Anran crouched down, moving closer to the sleeping person.
She wasn’t wearing her glasses, so Lin Anran could clearly see her dark, thick eyelashes, her very fair and clean skin. Her hair was somewhat abundant. When spread out, it looked fluffy. Her nose was straight, and her lips…
Her gaze stopped there and didn’t move for a long time.
She wanted to bite them.
It was strange. Every time she saw her lips, she wanted to bite them.
Lin Anran tentatively reached out, lightly touching her lips with her index finger. The soft, squishy touch felt similar to jelly.
How fun.
Lin Anran poked her lips with her finger repeatedly, clearly intrigued.
The person in her sleep seemed to feel ticklish, groaned, and unconsciously rubbed her mouth.
Lin Anran recoiled suddenly, as if startled, and tested quietly: “Jiang Yi, are you awake?”
No response.
Lin Anran sighed in relief, but quickly, her gaze fell on the red bracelet on Jiang Zhi’s wrist.
Why is she wearing it even when she sleeps? Can’t she take it off for a second?
Lin Anran gently poked the red bracelet, pouting unhappily. If she could, she’d poke it until it broke.
Who gave her that bracelet anyway?
This was the n-th time this thought had popped into Lin Anran’s head.
She had tried to inquire before, but the petty Jiang Zhi would instantly get a cold face whenever the bracelet was mentioned and refused to talk about it. One would think this cheap bracelet was some kind of rare treasure.
A moment ago, Jiang Zhi looked completely fine to her, but now, the more she looked at Jiang Zhi, the more irritated she felt.
Lin Anran stood up and kicked the sofa twice with a “bang, bang.”
Jiang Zhi woke up with a start. Before she could figure out what was happening, she saw a figure standing over the sofa, looking down at her.
“Oh my, you scared me. What are you doing standing here in the middle of the night?” Jiang Zhi sat up halfway.
“I just came to check if you were asleep. Now I know you are. Fine, go back to sleep.”
With that, she left, slamming the door shut with a “bang.”
Jiang Zhi had three question marks over her head. She wakes me up in the middle of the night, then tells me to go back to sleep?
That’s so typical of Lin Anran—the kind of inconsiderate thing she would do.
Lin Anran, having woken someone up, returned to her room to sleep with a clear conscience. Half-asleep, she vaguely felt someone lying beside her.
She groggily opened her eyes and met a pair of narrow, clear eyes.
“Jiang Yi?” she asked in confusion.
“Mm.” The person sleeping beside her replied softly.
“Why did you come to sleep in the bed? I thought you were sleeping on the sofa,” Lin Anran rubbed her eyes.
Jiang Zhi took the hand rubbing her eyes, and with a sudden, gentle pull, easily brought Lin Anran into her embrace.
Lin Anran’s body stiffened. She lay blankly in Jiang Zhi’s warm embrace, staring intently at the person inches away, her breathing suspended.
But even without breathing, she could still smell the faint laundry detergent fragrance on Jiang Zhi—a pleasant, clean, and refreshing scent.
It was a stirring aroma.
“W-w-what are you going to do?” The usually arrogant Miss Lin stammered for the first time.
“That’s what I should be asking you. What do you want to do to me?” The voice was intimate.
It was close to her ear, carrying a hint of provocation.
Lin Anran forced herself to stay calm, but her panicked eyes betrayed everything.
Jiang Zhi stroked her cheek: “I know what you want to do.”
Lin Anran subconsciously refuted: “What? No, I don’t.”
“Are you sure you don’t?” Jiang Zhi’s finger lightly pressed against her lips, rubbing slowly: “You don’t have to be afraid that I’ll get angry. You can do whatever you want to me.”
It was an insinuation, a silent permission, and even a temptation.
