Chapter 16: “You Don’t Care About Me at All.”
The person outside the glass window was wearing a pink long dress, with long wavy hair down to her waist, exquisite features, and a gentle, slightly tilted smile. Bathed in the streetlight’s glow, she was so beautiful that one could hardly look away.
Jiang Zhi stared at the arrival, momentarily stunned.
It wasn’t the first time she had seen Lin Anran; in fact, they had been together day and night for some time, yet she was still occasionally amazed by her undeniable beauty.
People often say that even the most beautiful person becomes unremarkable after seeing them too often, but this theory didn’t seem to apply to Lin Anran. On the contrary, the more you looked, the more stunning she became.
However…
Is the person outside the window really Lin Anran?
Why the doubt? Because Lin Anran’s current state was very strange.
She tilted her head and smiled, a shy and gentle smile.
Were those adjectives suitable for Lin Anran?
Absolutely not.
Lin Anran always looked at people with narrowed, condescending eyes, often rolling them. Her chin was perpetually slightly raised, as arrogant as a peacock; no one could catch her attention.
Furthermore, Miss Lin had just used her hand to tap on the window. Generally, she wouldn’t use the action of tapping; she would simply kick the window aggressively.
This “Lin Anran” outside the window, both in expression and behavior, seemed too normal.
So normal that it was abnormal.
She had only been gone for a day. Surely her personality hadn’t changed, had it?
Lin Anran was unaware of Jiang Zhi’s thoughts, continuing to smile gently, blinking occasionally, the complete image of a well-behaved girl.
Jiang Zhi shrank her neck. What was she doing? Smiling so gently—it was kind of creepy…
Before Jiang Zhi could figure out what was wrong with her, the person had already walked inside, taking small steps, occasionally brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
She walked up to Jiang Zhi, smiled sweetly, and called out softly: “Jiang Yi.”
Jiang Zhi looked at her suspiciously: “What’s wrong with you?”
Lin Anran twirled a strand of her long hair, her gentle smile unwavering: “What do you mean, what’s wrong with me? Nothing’s wrong with me.”
Jiang Zhi: “Are you possessed?”
The moment the words left her mouth, Lin Anran’s gentle smile dropped, and the hand twirling her hair fell: “Pigs can’t appreciate fine food.”
Jiang Zhi: “?”
Lin Anran rolled her eyes: “I gave you a kind look, and you pauper couldn’t even tell the difference between good and bad.”
Jiang Zhi twitched her mouth: “Please, don’t give me a kind look.”
She had genuinely thought the person was possessed, acting like she’d been replaced. This current fierce and rude demeanor was much easier to look at.
Lin Anran narrowed her eyes slightly, finding Jiang Zhi unpleasant no matter how she looked at her. They hadn’t seen each other for a day—it was practically a long-awaited reunion… Well, maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration.
But still!
She specifically came all the way to find her, dressed nicely in a pink skirt, spent ages on her makeup, and even forced herself to smile so gently when she saw her.
Yet, Jiang Zhi’s first words were, Are you possessed?
Is she sick?!
This pauper is genuinely mentally ill!!
Unacceptable. She was angry, very angry. Lin Anran strode forward and, without warning, kicked Jiang Zhi’s instep.
“Hiss, why did you step on me?” Jiang Zhi winced in pain.
“Did I step on you?” Lin Anran started her clumsy acting: “Oh, it seems I did. But you can’t blame me, you were blocking the way.”
Jiang Zhi: “…”
Stepping on her foot didn’t seem to appease the young lady’s anger entirely. Unfortunately, Xiao Man walked by and became the next target.
“You,” Lin Anran called out, crossing her arms in an arrogant stance: “Why didn’t you greet me? How rude.”
Xiao Man had a face full of question marks.
This rude young lady actually had the nerve to call someone else rude? Why didn’t she greet her? Because every time she did, Lin Anran ignored her. Who would keep trying?
Seeing Lin Anran start a confrontation, Jiang Zhi quickly pulled her aside: “It’s fine if you pick a fight with me, but don’t pick a fight with others. You don’t even know her.”
“Who’s picking a fight?” Lin Anran’s voice rose: “Didn’t you say before that it was rude when she greeted me and I didn’t respond? Now she’s not greeting me, so she’s clearly not polite either. In that case, what’s wrong with me pointing it out?”
What kind of bizarre, twisted logic was that…?
Jiang Zhi apologized to Xiao Man sheepishly and dragged the little sovereign outside.
The moment they got outside, Lin Anran impatiently shook off her hand: “Don’t touch me. You annoy me. I don’t like anything about you. You ugly creature.”
Her voice was so loud that it drew glances from passersby.
Lin Anran glared at the onlookers: “What are you looking at? You’re even worse than this ugly creature, you stupid…”
Jiang Zhi quickly covered her mouth, genuinely afraid the young lady would get beaten up.
“Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey,” Lin Anran slapped her hand away: “What is that smell? It’s disgusting.”
Jiang Zhi looked at her hand. She had been using a rag to wipe the glass and hadn’t washed her hands yet…
She self-consciously put her hands behind her back.
“I remember you were using a rag to wipe the glass just now,” Lin Anran seemed to recall something.
“Haha,” Jiang Zhi gave an awkward laugh: “You must be mistaken.”
Lin Anran stared at her coldly, silent, with an air of impending storm.
Jiang Zhi rubbed her nose: “Alright, alright, don’t be mad. I was just panicking and afraid you’d say something wrong and get hit by a passerby.”
She quickly changed the subject: “Um, why did you come here?”
Lin Anran: “I was passing by, of course. Did you think I came specifically to see you?”
Jiang Zhi nodded: “Right, right, just passing by. Couldn’t possibly be here to see me.”
Lin Anran glared at her. Already angry, her rage intensified upon hearing that.
She didn’t want to talk to Jiang Zhi anymore, turning around and walking away in a huff.
“Why are you leaving?” Jiang Zhi slowly followed behind, keeping a moderate distance.
The little cat was furious, walking quickly and stamping her feet heavily on the ground. “Da-da” sounds echoed.
Jiang Zhi watched from behind, a little worried that her shoe heels might break.
“Slow down. Don’t step so hard. Be careful, your heels might break.”
Instead of stopping, the person ahead walked even faster and stamped even harder.
Jiang Zhi smiled very softly.
Hearing the chuckle, Lin Anran’s footsteps stopped. She turned around abruptly, glaring at Jiang Zhi with ill intent.
Jiang Zhi stopped and shrugged: “What? What’s wrong now?”
Lin Anran puffed out her cheeks, holding it in for a long time, before finally spitting out a sentence.
“You don’t care about me at all!!”
Jiang Zhi was stunned for a moment.
Then she chuckled softly: “Why wouldn’t I care? Look, you’re angry, and I’m still following you. You don’t even want to see me, but I’m still shamelessly trailing you. Isn’t that caring about you enough?”
“I know you too well,” Lin Anran looked at her resentfully: “You’re afraid I won’t pay you back!”
Jiang Zhi walked up to her and stopped, leaning in slightly.
Lin Anran looked at the person approaching. She clearly saw her delicate face, the long, beautiful eyes behind the black-framed glasses, and her thin, soft lips…
Jiang Zhi coaxed softly: “Stop being angry, okay?”
Lin Anran’s expression froze. Her heart seemed to pause as well.
It took a long time for her to reply blankly: “Okay.”
