Did That A Get His Wife Back Today? - Chapter 1
“Knock, knock, knock!”
“President Liu, it’s time to head to the orphanage,” the assistant gently reminded her boss as she entered the office.
Liu Wuyi didn’t look up from the stack of documents in front of her, merely asking, “Are all the toys for the children ready?”
Only after receiving confirmation did, she remove her gold-rimmed glasses and stand up, straightening her shirt collar and adjusting her blazer before setting off for the orphanage they had mentioned.
It was already June, and the early summer heat had settled over the capital. The scorching sun blazed overhead, temperatures steadily climbing, filling the air with stifling warmth. At noon, the streets were nearly deserted, with few pedestrians or vehicles in sight.
At that moment, a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT wrapped in Arctic Gray quietly emerged from the company’s underground garage, speeding down the road understated yet undeniably luxurious.
The moment she stepped out of the car, a wave of heat hit her. Hidden in the large banyan tree planted at the orphanage’s entrance, cicadas began their shrill, rhythmic chirping.
This orphanage had been built just three years prior. Thanks to strong financial backing like a tree providing ample shade it boasted excellent facilities and a welcoming environment, providing shelter for many abandoned, lost, or homeless children.
And that “tree” was none other than the Shengshi Group, with Liu Wuyi currently at its helm.
The orphanage director and several staff members had been waiting at the entrance. The moment Liu Wuyi stepped out of the car, they immediately gathered around her.
“Director Wang, I told you there’s no need to wait for me at the gate. I would’ve come to your office once I arrived,” Liu Wuyi said naturally, draping an arm over Director Wang’s shoulder as they walked into the orphanage together.
“Oh, no, no, Miss Liu. You’re our honored guest here. If it weren’t for your recent generous donation, the children wouldn’t have new summer clothes or the chance to learn from the new tutors we’ve hired. Their lives wouldn’t be nearly as comfortable otherwise,” Director Wang insisted, waving her hands, unwilling to break protocol. Liu Wuyi had no choice but to let her have her way.
“Children, come quickly! Your Sister Liu is here!” Director Wang called out to the playful kids nearby.
Liu Wuyi did her best to respond to the little ones who, like firecrackers, came running toward her, shouting “Sister Liu!” She instructed her assistant to distribute the toys they had brought.
Liu Wuyi often drove here, almost every weekend, in fact. On the way, she would stop by a mall to pick up snacks and toys for the children. Then, she would sit under the tree, strumming her guitar and composing melodies, immersing herself in the atmosphere to relax and unwind.
She came quietly and left just as quietly.
But if “Mother Director” extended a sudden invitation, she would carve out time from her busy schedule, bringing along her assistant and driver so she could work on documents during the trip.
After receiving their toys, the children happily gathered under the tree to unwrap them. Liu Wuyi, without a care for appearances, sat on the grass among the kids. It was there that she overheard a conversation between two children, one that made her momentarily lose herself in thought.
“I’m going to be a singer when I grow up! Even Sister Liu said I sing really well!”
“Then can I be your assistant in the future? Just like on TV. I want to be your best friend for life.”
“Hmm~ If you present as an Alpha later, then we’ll be best friends for life. But if you present as an Omega or Beta, then I’ll marry you and make you my wife.”
“Why are you so sure you’ll present as an Alpha?”
“I’m so tall now, I’m definitely going to be an Alpha.”
“The recent teacher has taught a lot about Alphas, Betas, and Omegas, and the children have been listening very attentively,” Director Wang explained to Liu Wuyi with a kind smile upon hearing the innocent conversation between the two little ones.
“Director Mama, Sister Ji is here!” Suddenly, a clear and pure voice captured everyone’s attention. The noisy environment instantly quieted as all the children sprang up and rushed toward the direction the voice had indicated, shouting “Sister Ji!” as they ran.
Hearing the same surname from her memories, Liu Wuyi instinctively looked up toward where the children were running then abruptly stood.
Liu Wuyi immediately spotted the familiar figure in the distance. The children’s playful voices seemed to fade away in that moment, leaving only the sound of her own heartbeat echoing in her ears.
At that moment, she seemed to catch a faint whiff of pheromones emanating from herself. Though her scent glands were tightly sealed with suppressant patches, a momentary lapse of composure had caused a slight leak.
Neither Director Wang nor Liu Wuyi’s assistant were Alphas or Omegas both were Betas. No one would have expected the usually composed and unflappable Liu Wuyi to act so out of character.
Liu Wuyi stood frozen, afraid to confirm, worried it was just her longing playing tricks on her.
Seeing Liu Wuyi staring intently at the distant figure, Director Wang assumed she was merely curious and explained, “That Ms. Ji has been a frequent visitor to our orphanage lately. I heard she only recently arrived in the capital and happened to pass by here. After seeing the orphanage, she started bringing gifts for the children often, teaching them simple drawings. The kids have been learning quite well.”
Watching the children enthusiastically throw themselves into Ms. Ji’s arms, Director Wang paused and smiled. “Though this young lady can’t speak, she’s very beautiful and kind-hearted. The children adore her and often ask me, ‘When will Sister Ji come again?'”
Hearing Director Wang’s words, Liu Wuyi was certain she hadn’t been mistaken, she had finally found the person she had been yearning for. But the director’s following words echoed in her ears like fireworks, nearly deafening her. She couldn’t comprehend, “What do you mean she can’t speak?”
“When I spoke with Ms. Ji last time, she pointed at her throat and shook her head. After that, all our communication was through writing. I’ve never heard her speak even when teaching the children to draw. Judging by your reaction, Ms. Liu, do you know her?”
Know her?
Of course I know her.
How could I not know her?
Director Wang’s explanation was exactly what Liu Wuyi didn’t want to hear. She needed to see for herself, unwilling to accept just one side of the story. Five years ago when they parted, Ji Yunshu had been perfectly fine, why had she lost her ability to speak upon their reunion?
Had her mother secretly caused trouble for Ji Yunshu without her knowledge during these years?
For the past five years since their breakup, Liu Wuyi had survived by deluding herself, fantasizing that everything would be renewed once they met again. Now that the moment had finally come, hearing about Ji Yunshu’s current state made her doubt everything.
If her suspicions were true, was there still any possibility left between them?
Unable to restrain herself any longer, Liu Wuyi strode toward Ji Yunshu.
“Ji Yunshu!” The name slipped out like an unconscious murmur, so quiet that even her assistant beside her didn’t catch it. Yet, as if sensing it, Ji Yunshu turned her head.
Their eyes met again, and Ji Yunshu froze on the spot, the toy she had been holding to entertain the children slipping from her fingers unnoticed.
She recognized the woman approaching her Liu Wuyi, the ex-girlfriend who had once broken her heart.
She had changed so much, grown even thinner.
Her striking, sea-king-red waves cascaded freely, her glass-like eyes carrying a hint of detachment. Dressed in a tightly buttoned formal suit despite the sweltering thirty-degree heat, not an inch of skin exposed, she strode forward in towering heels that amplified her already imposing 178 cm frame, every inch the picture of refined elegance.
To those who didn’t know her, she might seem like a dazzling, untouchable beauty but in truth, she was just a little dog who loved to nudge and pester.
As flamboyant as ever, a peacock in human form.
The director noticed Ji Yunshu’s reaction but saw her only glance briefly at Liu Wuyi before looking away, picking up the fallen toy and resuming her play with the children.
It didn’t seem like they knew each other, Director Wang thought.
But that wasn’t the case. Though Ji Yunshu’s expression remained unreadable, her mind was in turmoil.
Beijing was vast, she had never imagined she would cross paths with Liu Wuyi again in this lifetime. Memories of their bitter parting five years ago flooded back. She wanted to grab Liu Wuyi by the collar and demand answers, but no matter how many words burned inside her, she couldn’t speak them.
Compared to the past, Ji Yunshu had learned to control her emotions well. Even as she recalled Liu Wuyi’s past cruelty, she only clenched her jaw, suppressing the urge to tear into her and settle old scores.
Liu Wuyi’s gaze traced the figure she had only dared to dream of in the dead of night, her throat tightening before she finally managed to whisper, “Long time no see, A-Yun.” Her voice trembled faintly.
Ji Yunshu pretended not to hear, casually averting her eyes and shrinking behind the children like a quail, her evasive gaze making it clear she wanted to feign ignorance. But Liu Wuyi, as oblivious as ever, stepped forward and greeted her with the ease of an old acquaintance.
“Oh, so you two actually know each other? I’ve never seen you come here together before, I thought you weren’t acquainted.”
Director Wang gave Ji Yunshu an awkward smile. “Miss Ji, I was just introducing you to Miss Liu earlier. What a silly misunderstanding.”
A delayed realization dawned on Director Wang, and her expression gradually brightened with delight. “The children are so lucky to meet such kind-hearted people like you both.” Growing more enthusiastic, she decisively arranged for them to stay for lunch at the orphanage, leaving no room for refusal. With that, she hurried off to the kitchen, ready to join the cook in preparing a feast.
Ji Yunshu was usually gentle and polite with everyone, yet despite Director Wang’s lengthy conversation, she hadn’t responded with a single word uncharacteristic of her demeanor. It seemed Director Wang’s words held some truth, and Liu Wuyi’s heart sank slightly.
Reuniting with someone from the past, especially when their parting had been unpleasant, and now sharing the same space, breathing the same air, it all felt undeniably awkward.
Just as Ji Yunshu had managed to ignore Liu Wuyi’s presence, one of the little girls clinging to her arm suddenly piped up, “Sister Ji, this is the Sister Liu we told you about before. She’s just as nice as you we’re all good friends!” The remark forced Ji Yunshu to acknowledge Liu Wuyi beside her once again.
While waiting for lunch to be served, Liu Wuyi occasionally asked trivial questions, clearly grasping at straws for conversation. But Ji Yunshu’s silence left her at a loss, reduced to awkward smiles.
After several attempts, with Ji Yunshu focused solely on teaching the children to draw their earnest concentration leaving Liu Wuyi’s voice the only one echoing around even someone as thick-skinned as Liu Wuyi couldn’t bring herself to keep disturbing her.
Finally, after an excruciating half-hour, “Mother Director” reappeared under the large tree, calling everyone to the cafeteria for lunch. Ji Yunshu inwardly exhaled in relief, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. In that moment, Director Wang’s image grew even more heroic in her eyes practically a savior rescuing her from the depths of distress.
Ji Yunshu immediately set down her paintbrush, took the hand of the child beside her and strode briskly toward the cafeteria, as if fleeing from some monstrous threat.
The meal passed with both women lost in their own thoughts.
