- Did Puppy Pick Up Fluffy Things on the Livestream Today?
- Chapter 2 - Spare a Little Fire?
[Scared me to death! I thought on my first day following the streamer, I’d watch this silly puppy end up in a snake’s belly QAQ.]
[He’s so smart! Knowing his teeth weren’t strong enough, he chose to bite down and hold on to suffocate the giant snake!]
[A stray puppy picking up a stray kitten; what a fairytale!]
[Momo is so pitiful; that earthen burrow looks like it is about to collapse.]
[I hope the kitten will be okay!]
Dong Mo held the kitten in his mouth. His heart was still racing violently even after they had completely scrambled into the cave.
Ever since arriving in this world, he had discovered that many animals were several times larger than those in the human world he once knew, and they were exceptionally ferocious. The lives of beastmen leaned toward a primitive world. The law of survival was natural selection where the strong reigned supreme. If the weak did not strive to become stronger, only death awaited them.
Before encountering today’s giant snake, Dong Mo had seen other massive beasts, but back then, he had quietly shrunk into the withered bushes. Those giants could not see him.
Carefully placing the kitten on the ground, Dong Mo quickly shifted into his teenage form. He haphazardly tied a beast skin around his waist and dragged over a sack of hemp grass, spreading it over a “dirt bed” he had temporarily piled up from excavated soil.
He leaned over to gently pick up the kitten and slowly placed it on the hemp sack so the dirt would not soil its body.
Kneeling by the dirt bed, Dong Mo looked at the kitten lying on its side with a slow-rising belly. He was somewhat at a loss. He could not resist reaching out to lightly stroke the back of its head.
The kitten’s body was ice-cold. Having stayed in the snow all night and still clinging to a breath of life, its will to live was incredibly tenacious.
Dong Mo looked at the blood scabs sealing its eyes. Although there was no fire, the temperature inside the earthen cave was warmer than out in the snow. The frozen blood began to slowly melt, trickling down the corners of the kitten’s eyes in thin threads.
The kitten’s pink nose twitched again, and its tiny mouth let out a very small whimper.
Hearing that sound, the heart of Dong Mo, a hardcore “fluff-lover,” completely melted.
His current cave had nothing but a few wild fruits, and it even faced the constant threat of collapsing. The kitten was covered in injuries and had endured extreme cold. It needed enough warmth to heat its body and some nutritious food.
“Food!”
“That snake!”
Dong Mo’s eyes suddenly lit up. The next second, the messy beast skin draped over him was tossed onto the ground again. He turned and shifted into a small black dog with a fluffy, curled tail, dashing out of the cave toward the place where the giant snake had died.
The snake was dead! It was bitten to death by him! That was a delivery of free food!
The giant snake was massive. Dong Mo bit the snake’s tail and spent the whole way staggering as he dragged it through the snowy furrow he had previously carved out, pulling it all the way to the cave entrance.
The livestream audience watched the half-meter-tall puppy laboriously dragging the giant snake. The screen filled with “Hahaha” messages.
[I’m dying laughing! He’s even pacing with the same-side legs!]
[Look, look! When he exerts himself, his tail curls up even tighter into a circle!]
[So cute! I want to rub that head!]
Tossing the giant snake at the cave entrance, Dong Mo let out a long sigh of relief. Now that there was food, he could process the snake slowly.
The only thing left was to raise the temperature inside the cave.
The season he had transmigrated into was terrible. It happened to be the deadly Great Cold winter. On his first day, he had tried “rubbing wood to make fire,” but unfortunately, he lacked systematic technique and could not find a stone that could actually strike a spark. After many failed attempts, he gave up.
Luckily, he discovered that the thick fur of his beast form could block the nocturnal chill, allowing him to scrape by for three nights. But now that there was a kitten in the cave needing care, things could not go on like this.
“But how to get fire?”
Dong Mo shifted back into a youth. While putting on his beast-skin clothes, he kept glancing at the dying kitten on the dirt bed.
Though he constantly comforted himself internally to accept life and death, considering he could not even guarantee his own survival, he worried if he could not save the kitten.
He shook his head, forcing himself to stop overthinking. No matter what, he had to try his best to save the kitten! This was the first friend he had met in this otherworldly realm.
The biggest mission right now was to get fire.
His handsome brows furrowed. His cheeks still carried a bit of lingering baby fat that added a touch of cuteness to his beautiful features. Drilling wood had failed, and there was no sun in this weather. If only there were some ready-made fire, he could go borrow some.
Thinking of this, Dong Mo’s eyes suddenly widened.
“Right! I can go take some ready-made fire!”
The territory of the Moon Mountain Tribe was very vast. Almost half of the Moon Mountain Forest was within their patrol range. Dong Mo had been dumped at the easternmost edge of the forest. Over the past three days, he had figured out the pattern. A tribal patrol would pass through here every evening.
It got dark early in winter, and the beastmen leading the patrol would usually hold one or two torches. If he could steal one of them, that would be perfect!
With that thought, Dong Mo poked his head out of the cave, looking at the sunlight filtering through the trees. It was past noon. The patrol should have already set out.
He was just an underage black wolf-pup. He certainly could not face dozens of strong “werewolves” head-on, and a sneak attack was unlikely.
An idea gradually formed in Dong Mo’s mind.
He tilted his head toward the floating livestream window. The viewer count had exceeded three hundred, and many people were tipping small, low-tier gifts. Delighted, Dong Mo gave a light wink to the screen.
“Thank you, big brothers and sisters, for the little stars and canned food.”
“To thank you all, I’ll take everyone to steal some fire!”
As soon as he spoke, a string of question marks flooded the chat.
[????]
[What fire did he say?]
[Stealing fire? Huh? Can you actually steal fire?]
[?? Prometheus Puppy?]
The dim winter sun gradually sank. The gray sky briefly showed an orange-red sunset, but it was quickly smothered by the chill of the heavy snow.
The Moon Mountain Tribe was one of the most powerful tribes in the eastern part of the Beastman Continent. The daily patrol consisted of about twenty adult beastmen.
Today’s leader was the white wolf, Yue Jia. He held a torch coated in layers of animal fat high in the air. His muscular upper body was exposed, and he walked barefoot through the deep snow, completely unfazed by the cold.
Shrinking into a nearby bush, Dong Mo licked his pink tongue and whispered a quiet complaint. “No, seriously, dude. I get that you have a good body and it is easier for you to shift into a giant wolf, but is it really not cold to wear nothing at all? Is the difference in physical fitness between people really this huge?”
The livestream could not help but laugh at his muttering.
[Hahahaha, the puppy is judging the guy for not wearing clothes!]
[Come to think of it, Momo is so afraid of the cold. It’s the first time I’ve seen a canine beastman wrapped entirely in beast skins.]
[Momo, do not envy his body! You are fair and tender!]
[Person above, stop being a creep!]
The patrol members remained highly alert. Even stepping in thick snow, they did not make noise. They were unlike Dong Mo, who used to make a series of loud sounds when walking, as if he wanted to tell every wild beast exactly where he was.
Dong Mo looked down at his pink left front paw, feeling a bit envious, and decided to turn over a new leaf. From now on, he would walk more quietly too.
Seeing Yue Jia approaching his hiding spot with the torch, Dong Mo narrowed his eyes and gently stood up.
“Ying-oh.”
A weak, pitiful whimper of a puppy came from right where Yue Jia was about to step.
The sound startled him so much he almost lost his footing. The livestream viewers were also shocked. Who made that sound?
Yue Jia frowned and gestured for the beastmen behind him to stay alert. He then reached out to clear the pile of snow where the sound originated, revealing a cluster of withered, frozen shrubs.
A small black puppy held its left front paw high. Its round silver eyes looked at him timidly, and its originally curled tail was now tucked tightly between its legs. Its whole body was trembling.
“Wu-wu.”
Adhering to the principle of “acting the full set,” Dong Mo squeezed his voice to whimper again. While whimpering, he deliberately wobbled forward two steps with his left paw raised, pretending to be exhausted and collapsing to the ground.
“Isn’t this that mixed-blood cub the Chief kicked out of the tribe a few days ago?”
Another beastman with darker skin and a sturdy build walked up from behind Yue Jia. Seeing Dong Mo’s pitiful fallen state, he blinked in surprise.
Yue Jia’s brow remained tightly furrowed. “He is a sub-beastman.”
“Even if he is a sub-beastman, the Chief did it for the tribe. Did you forget what the Priest said? ‘A curled tail is a symbol of misfortune.’ Besides, he is a filthy mixed-blood of unknown origin.”
The dark-skinned beastman spoke very harshly. Dong Mo buried his head in the snow and silently rolled his eyes.
“You are the filthy one! You are the filthiest!”
“He seems to be injured.” Yue Jia did not seem to agree with his companion’s explanation. He crouched down to observe Dong Mo.
Seeing that the chance to play the victim had arrived, Dong Mo became even more spirited. He struggled to stand up again and lifted his puppy head, gazing carefully and pitifully at Yue Jia and the torch in his hand.
A pair of round silver eyes filled with tears, crystal clear and heart-wrenching.
Although Dong Mo was a mixed-blood cub, he was exceptionally good-looking. The width of his snout was just right, tipped with a shiny black nose, and a pair of large upright ears added charm.
Being stared at with such eyes, and considering he was a sub-beastman, Yue Jia quickly noticed where his gaze was fixed.
“You want fire?” he asked, somewhat surprised.
The black puppy nodded its small head eagerly. Its raised left paw continued to tremble in the air as if it were truly severely injured.
In reality, Dong Mo was almost at his limit. Holding his paw up for so long was really tiring!
“Tch.”
The dark-skinned beastman let out a sneer at the sight. “I thought he wanted us to take him back to the tribe! In this state, what does he need fire for? He will probably freeze to death here by tomorrow morning anyway!”
His tone was full of mockery.
On the surface, Dong Mo remained weak, pitiful, and helpless, but in his heart, he had already sliced this dark beastman into pieces with his sharp little claws. “Look at you and your big mouth! Cursing me to die! You will definitely die before me!”
“Shut up, Yue Qi.”
Yue Jia’s frown deepened as he snapped at him. “Even if he was kicked out of the tribe, he is still a cub. Have you forgotten the rules of our Moon Mountain Tribe?”
Yue Qi shut his mouth, turning away in an unhappy huff.
Dong Mo’s racing heart finally settled. It seemed this Yue Jia had a brain and would not be easily swayed by a few words.
While plotting, Dong Mo hopped forward another inch, looking at Yue Jia with eyes full of longing, as if saying: “I will not go back to the tribe with you, and I will not trouble you with anything else. I just beg you to give me a little fire!”
Yue Jia looked Dong Mo up and down once more. Man and dog locked eyes for a moment until dissatisfied voices came from the beastmen behind.
“Yue Jia! Do not waste time! The sun is setting!”
“If we are late, the Chief will blame us!”
“My mate is pregnant! I need to go back and take care of him!”
One urge after another rang out. Yue Jia sighed softly. He did not hand the torch to the puppy; instead, he pulled something out from his beast-skin skirt and placed it gently in front of Dong Mo.
“You would not be able to carry a torch even if I gave it to you. These are firestones. If you can survive, use them to make fire.”
With that, the tall beastman stood up. He gave the trembling black puppy a deep look with his own silver eyes, then turned and led the other beastmen away.
In the deep snow, the patrol resumed its trek back to the tribe.
Dong Mo looked at the reddish-brown stones, about the size of his human palm, in shock.
“So these are the kind of stones that can make fire!”
“Is this a stroke of unexpected luck?!”
He had been worried about how to keep a fire going if he only got a torch, but now he had sustainable firestones!
The puppy quickly lowered the left paw he had been holding up for ages and could not help but look once more at the retreating backs of the beastmen.
“Alright, alright, alright! I will remember this werewolf named Yue Jia! A good man!”
Now he and the kitten had fire!
The livestream audience had been stunned into silence by Dong Mo’s series of performances, and only now did the comments start flooding back.
[No way; you can play it like that?]
[Puppy faking a limp; good puppy. The abs-guy giving firestones; good guy. So who was it that kicked our Momo out of the tribe?!]
[It really was ‘stealing’ fire in a literal sense.]
[Momo the puppy is a master of manipulation; those two whimpers were perfectly pitched!]
[That white wolf beastman really is a good person; he even gave a firestone!]
Dong Mo glanced at the comments and lifted his small chin with pride.
“Just tell me: did I steal the fire or not!”
With that, he excitedly picked up the firestone in his mouth and turned to run joyously toward his cave, his black fluffy tail once again curled into a perfect circle over his butt.
