Chapter 91: Extra 1 — Study Abroad Chronicles (V)
Chen Kongqing couldn’t quite catch his breath.
He stared at the man in the gray overcoat standing before him. The hem of the coat swayed gently in the chilly draft from the hallway. That handsome face was touched by a hint of the damp, cold outside air.
“You… how did you get here?” Chen Kongqing finally recovered and threw himself into the man’s arms.
The familiar, long-missed scent of lemon mixed with bitter orange filled his nose—a fragrance that always brought him peace. Chen Kongqing buried his face in the warm chest. “Are you on vacation?”
“Mhm.” Xu Jingmo’s voice was deep as he reached out to pull the person he had been thinking of day and night into a tight embrace.
The few ounces of flesh that had finally grown on Kongqing’s waist over the past two years had vanished again. Xu Jingmo easily lifted the person in his arms with one hand and carried him into the apartment. With a hook of his foot, the front door was softly closed.
Chen Kongqing hooked his arms around the man’s neck. “I was going to fly back for the Spring Festival soon anyway. Why did you come now?”
“To pick you up.”
“You didn’t have to go to such trouble.” Even as he said it, Chen Kongqing felt like Winnie the Pooh falling into a giant honey jar; his heart was overflowing with thick, sweet joy.
He reached up to touch the man’s thin earlobe. “So cold. It must be freezing outside.”
Chen Kongqing asked this with his head tilted back. For a moment, their eyes met. Such a moment was far too perfect for a kiss. Thinking this, Chen Kongqing’s lips parted slightly.
In less than a second, his mouth was claimed.
“Nng…”
The kiss was fierce, almost as if Xu Jingmo wanted to swallow him whole. Chen Kongqing tried his best to keep up with the rhythm, kissing back with equal intensity while clinging to Xu Jingmo’s neck.
But soon, he couldn’t sustain such a high-intensity kiss. The oxygen in his lungs was depleted. “Mmph…” His lips were blocked; he could only let out soft whimpers as he was pressed back.
A powerful arm circled his lower back, and he was guided down onto the sofa. The sofa was small; Chen Kongqing usually had to curl up his legs to fit. Now, he was pinned down on this tiny piece of furniture.
Xu Jingmo leaned over him, kissing him relentlessly for a long time. Their frantic breaths intertwined and lingered. Chen Kongqing was kissed until his head spun.
When Xu Jingmo finally pulled away from his lips, his eyes—though filled with desire—still held a layer of damp, lingering cold. “Baby, who am I?”
Chen Kongqing swallowed hard, his chaotic thoughts forced into sudden clarity. Even though he tried to think, he didn’t quite understand the underlying meaning of the question. He could only whisper, “Um… you’re Xu Jingmo.”
“Who is Xu Jingmo?” the man pressed.
A pink flush crept over Chen Kongqing’s fair face. He didn’t want to answer. Then, he felt a sharp bite on his neck, and his waist was squeezed firmly.
“It hurts…” He protested, squirming a little.
In return, the restraint grew tighter. His body was pinned down so thoroughly he had no room to move. Xu Jingmo wouldn’t let him go. “Who is he? Baby.”
Chen Kongqing turned his face slightly away, avoiding eye contact. “He’s… my boyfriend.”
Xu Jingmo wasn’t entirely satisfied with this answer, but he tentatively loosened his grip on the “rabbit” beneath him. Chen Kongqing watched as Xu Jingmo began to take off his coat. The light gray cashmere coat was tossed carelessly onto the rug.
Underneath, Xu Jingmo wore a tight black sweater. This kind of clothing was very demanding on one’s physique, but on Xu Jingmo, it served as a perfect visual temptation. However, Chen Kongqing wasn’t completely blinded by beauty yet, because the “cold wave” in those phoenix eyes hadn’t dissipated; they still looked damp and chilly.
“And?” Xu Jingmo asked again.
Chen Kongqing’s face burned as he exhaled a puff of heat. “Husband…”
Xu Jingmo’s voice darkened. “So you see clearly now, right? Baby.”
Chen Kongqing was pulled back into the man’s arms. Xu Jingmo leaned down and whispered into his ear, his warm breath tickling the sensitive skin. Chen Kongqing shrank back instinctively. Still not fully grasping Xu Jingmo’s line of questioning, he mumbled, “Mhm… I see… I see clearly.”
“Mhm. Am I ‘Jen’?” Xu Jingmo hovered over him, relentless.
Only then did it dawn on Chen Kongqing. All of this questioning was because he had opened the door calling out for “Jen.”
“No… no.” He felt an inexplicable sense of panic and explained hurriedly, “I called for Jen because I told him I was making River Snail Rice Noodles and would save him a bowl. I thought it was him…”
Before he could finish, Xu Jingmo bit his lips again. This time was aggressive, barely softer than the first. Chen Kongqing, lacking oxygen, struggled instinctively with his hands and feet. But without exception, he was held fast.
Xu Jingmo’s breath was heavy. “Baby, we haven’t seen each other in so long. I didn’t come here to hear about you cooking for another man.”
“I wasn’t ‘cooking for him’…” Chen Kongqing argued weakly. “I was just… returning a favor.”
“You’ve never cooked that for me.” Xu Jingmo seemed to have selective hearing. “Tell me, how should I punish you?”
“I don’t make it for you because you can’t handle it! Last time you insisted on eating it with me, you gave yourself a stomachache.” Chen Kongqing frowned, refuting the “injustice.” “When have I not cooked for you? You’re being unfair.”
Xu Jingmo attempted to make him submit through force again, pinching his waist. Chen Kongqing was like a lively little fish, squirming and splashing. He didn’t even know how he managed to slip away.
Perhaps because he didn’t want to be wrongly accused, he used all his strength to push Xu Jingmo away and scrambled off the sofa. Straightening his messed-up light brown cardigan, he grew indignant and mimicked Xu Jingmo’s tone: “I just bought this, and you tore it. Tell me, how are you going to compensate me?”
Xu Jingmo looked at the huffing rabbit and found him adorable. “I’ll compensate you. I’ll buy you two sets tomorrow.”
The rabbit pouted, looking like he wouldn’t be easily coaxed. “Go away…”
“I just got here, baby.” Xu Jingmo ignored the resistant body language, reached out with a large hand, and pulled him back in. “Are you really kicking me out?”
Chen Kongqing felt even more aggrieved. “Exactly, you just got here! Who starts a fight the moment they see each other? You should be holding me and talking to me properly.”
“It’s my fault,” Xu Jingmo said, encircling the boy from behind. “I’m just… afraid.”
“Afraid of what?” Chen Kongqing turned his face slightly, his cheek brushing against Xu Jingmo’s thick, dark hair.
“Every day you aren’t by my side, I’m afraid.” Xu Jingmo held that thin, soft waist tightly. “Afraid you’ll leave me.”
Chen Kongqing had never considered himself a secure person, especially in relationships. But after being with Xu Jingmo, his own insecurities had been filled. Paradoxically, it was Xu Jingmo who seemed to lack security.
He thought he had expressed enough when he first moved, and he always wore the ring Xu Jingmo gave him. Throughout the semester, he had focused entirely on his labs and studies, avoiding social events.
“I won’t leave you,” Chen Kongqing repeated. Even after saying it so many times, he didn’t find it tedious; he only hoped this time it would put Xu Jingmo at ease. “Xu Jingmo, I only like you. Even if I forget many things, I still remember your eyes. Do you still not believe I love you?”
The man behind him didn’t speak, but his arms tightened further. Chen Kongqing didn’t hold back his affection; he turned his head and pecked the man’s lips. “And I’ll love you forever. Besides, I’m really happy you showed up today, because I really… missed you.”
His eyes met Xu Jingmo’s deep, dark gaze. Then, he was “devoured” again.
This time, the kiss was lingering and soulful. Chen Kongqing remembered he had things to do, but as the kiss deepened, his mind went blank. In a state of oxygen deprivation, his body could only follow his desires.
Only one dim floor lamp was lit in the apartment, casting a warm, atmospheric glow. Under the light, Chen Kongqing’s slightly arched neck was bathed in a honeyed hue. Soon, it was marked with berries of varying sizes.
“Where is the dress? When will baby wear it for me?” Xu Jingmo’s raspy voice came from behind him.
Chen Kongqing was draped over the sofa, his hands gripping the soft backrest. The world before him swayed rhythmically. He acted as if he didn’t hear, biting his lip to keep from making a sound.
Just then, a sudden knocking came from the door.
Knock, knock.
Chen Kongqing’s drifting thoughts were snapped back to reality. He bit his lower lip hard. The knocking continued, followed by a voice: “Azurite, are you home?”
Chen Kongqing, who had been limp against the sofa, suddenly tensed up like a drawn bowstring. Behind him, Xu Jingmo threw his head back and let out a long, heavy exhale.
