Chapter 73: The “Egg” in the Author’s Note: “Do you want me to * pry them open?”
Chen Kongqing’s face was flushed red, but his mind didn’t wander toward “R-rated” territory. Instead, he was thinking about the consequences of staying in bed forever.
“Then I’ll atrophy,” he said, still poking his chin with his chopsticks, expressing his concerns quite seriously. “My limbs will atrophy if I lie down for too long.”
“It doesn’t matter. If you atrophy, you can only stay by my side.” Xu Jingmo hadn’t expected the rabbit’s concern to be biological degradation.
As expected of a rabbit. He had no idea of the actual “dangers” that awaited him in bed.
Drinking his rib soup, Chen Kongqing muttered, “You’re such a pervert.”
“You don’t like it?” The man raised an eyebrow, staring at Chen Kongqing as he sipped his soup. “You said you liked it last night.”
Last night… that kind of scene. Could he have said he didn’t like it?! The rabbit’s face turned a deeper shade of crimson, and he fell silent.
“Do you actually not like it?” Xu Jingmo seemed to become cautious again. “Then I won’t do that next time.”
Chen Kongqing noticed that Xu Jingmo was always like this—worrying. He was constantly worried that the boy wouldn’t like something or would be uncomfortable. That’s why he was always so careful. For example, he had been deeply bothered by the “eye” issue but had kept it bottled up.
Is it because I give him too little reassurance? Thinking this, Chen Kongqing licked his lips and decided to provide some positive feedback. “No… I liked it…”
The moment he said it, Xu Jingmo’s phoenix eyes seemed to brighten. It was a look filled with a hint of predatory intent, as if because Chen Kongqing said he liked it, Xu Jingmo was ready to drag him back to bed for a “review session.”
“Ahem…” Chen Kongqing quickly looked away to prevent the sparks from igniting a fire.
However… it was clearly impossible to suppress the mood now.
After dinner—or rather, after Chen Kongqing dawdled through his meal and then lingered over his soup, refusing to leave the table—it was time.
Xu Jingmo had finished long ago. He had gone to the balcony to flip the drying sheets and watered the small orchids Chen Kongqing grew. When he returned from the balcony, Chen Kongqing was still slowly nursing his soup.
Xu Jingmo walked over. Before he could speak, just as he reached the edge of the table, Chen Kongqing lost his nerve. “I… I’m almost finished drinking.”
He thought Xu Jingmo would rush him or ask if he was eating slowly on purpose. But instead, Xu Jingmo asked, “Do you want me to heat it up? Has it gone cold?”
Chen Kongqing froze with his spoon in mid-air, shaking his head with a slight delay. “No need…” He gulped down the rest of the soup in one go. “I’m full…”
“Really full?” Xu Jingmo’s lips curved slightly. “Not going to eat a bit more?”
Chen Kongqing felt like he had been seen through again. He didn’t know how Xu Jingmo managed to spot his little tricks so easily while simultaneously acting so anxious.
He didn’t have time to think. As soon as he left the table, he was scooped up and carried to the bed.
Just as he was tossed onto the soft mattress, his waistband was grabbed. Chen Kongqing instinctively clutched it, preventing Xu Jingmo from pulling them down. “No… it still hurts…”
He thought Xu Jingmo wanted a second round and tried to stop him with burning ears. Xu Jingmo didn’t let go, the smile on his lips remaining. “What are you thinking? I’m applying medicine.”
As he spoke, the man produced a tube of ointment as if by magic.
“No need…” Chen Kongqing didn’t let go. “I can do it myself…” Having someone else apply medicine there was just… too much.
“You can’t see it clearly; it’s hard to apply properly.” Xu Jingmo’s tone was firm, and his movements were resolute as he pulled the waistband down.
The rabbit resisted, of course, but his resistance was futile. He ended up covering his face with his arms and squeezing his eyes shut. He could feel his pants being pulled down to his ankles.
Before Xu Jingmo’s eyes lay a pair of long, straight, snow-white legs with no excess fat.
Xu Jingmo: “Spread your legs.”
It was a clear command, but Chen Kongqing wished he didn’t understand human language.
Xu Jingmo: “Does Qingqing want me to pry them open?”
Chen Kongqing felt like his ears had exploded upon hearing that. From the tips to the base, they turned a shade of red that looked like it might bleed. Finally, with his eyes closed and his lip bitten, he spread his legs with a “do or die” attitude. The muscles in his legs throbbed with a mix of soreness and pain.
Immediately after, he felt the stinging heat of a certain spot covered by a layer of coldness. It was icy and soothing. As the ointment was applied, the burning pain diminished significantly.
He couldn’t help but wonder what kind of underwear he was wearing today. Forget it, it didn’t matter. Xu Jingmo was the one who dressed him anyway. Thinking this, the rabbit suddenly gave up and released his bitten lower lip.
Xu Jingmo applied the ointment gently to the inflamed skin. The skin there was too delicate. But he couldn’t blame the skin entirely; he hadn’t restrained himself well last night. Xu Jingmo felt a pang of guilt and lightened his touch, terrified of hurting the rabbit again. “Does it hurt when I touch it like this? I’ll be even gentler.”
Lying on the bed, Chen Kongqing shook his head, his hair rubbing against the gray sheets. “It doesn’t hurt.”
“It’s very red. Don’t put your pants back on for now; just lie there,” Xu Jingmo instructed. “You need another application tonight. I’ll come over to help you.”
Chen Kongqing bit his lip again and nodded. “I… I’ll do it myself tonight. You don’t have to come over.”
“Are you really not moving back?” Xu Jingmo capped the ointment. He had been kneeling on the bed on one knee, but now he stood by the bedside. “Or I could move in here. I want to live with you.”
At that moment, Chen Kongqing’s pajama pants were around his ankles, his legs were spread, and his arms covered most of his face. He shook his head vigorously, making the small bed creak. “No.”
Xu Jingmo averted his gaze slightly to steady his breathing. In a scene like this, no one could remain unmoved. “Why not?”
“Let’s take it slow, Xu Jingmo,” Chen Kongqing said softly, his clear willow-leaf eyes looking timid. “I want to move a bit slower, make it feel real.”
Xu Jingmo looked into his eyes and finally compromised. “Then when will you introduce me to your friends?”
“Mm.” Chen Kongqing turned his gaze back to the ceiling. Even with the lights off, it felt bright. “When are you free?”
Xu Jingmo: “I am always free for you.”
Chen Kongqing smiled. He felt not only bright but also warm. “Then… Wednesday night. We have a lot of classes on Monday and Tuesday, so we’re busy.”
Xu Jingmo: “Deal.”
…
“Yes, yes, yes!” Zhu Mingtian began teasing as soon as he entered the private dining room. “How am I the last to know? Kongqing, this is… really not fair.”
“Senior, you can’t blame Kongqing. You just got back from America. With the distance, news travels slow,” Du Song said, cracking melon seeds. “I’m in the lab with Kongqing every day and I only just found out, so you haven’t lost out.”
Zhu Mingtian laughed and pointed at him. “You always have something to say.”
Chen Kongqing walked over and introduced Zhu Mingtian to the others. For this meal, he had invited his fellow lab mates and some close classmates; they basically all knew each other.
Gao Tianyou chimed in: “Where’s your ‘significant other’? If he’s late, I’m deducting points.”
“He had an emergency meeting today; he’ll be here soon.” Chen Kongqing handed him a handful of melon seeds. “By the way, why didn’t Captain Zhang come?”
He had invited Zhang Cheng as well. He had actually forgotten about Zhang Cheng, but Xu Jingmo had reminded him.
Gao Tianyou, acting like an efficient seed-cracking machine, said, “Oh, he seemed to have something to do today, so he couldn’t make it.”
“I see.” Chen Kongqing didn’t press further.
The group chatted while waiting for Xu Jingmo. Zhu Mingtian shared funny stories from his time in the US, then suddenly remembered something. “By the way, Kongqing, did you enter that international competition? If you win, the department provides a government-sponsored slot for a Master’s in Botany in the UK.”
“I did. I just submitted the research report. It probably won’t have results for a while, but… I’m mostly just doing it for the experience,” Chen Kongqing answered with a smile.
Du Song patted his shoulder. “Nonsense! Junior, you have a real talent. That’s not just me saying it; our great Professor said it himself.”
Gao Tianyou added, “Yeah, Kongqing, your last presentation was amazing. I was stunned.”
“That was just a simple report,” Chen Kongqing demurred.
As they were talking excitedly, the door to the private room was pushed open. Outside stood Xu Jingmo, wearing a black jacket over a plaid shirt and simple straight-leg trousers. It was a clean look, yet he exuded an extraordinary aura. With his height and superior physique, he would look good even in a burlap sack.
As soon as he appeared, everyone’s eyes in the room converged on him. Including Chen Kongqing.
In many unexpected moments, Chen Kongqing found himself thinking that Xu Jingmo was truly handsome. Sometimes he wondered if he even cared about the eyes at all—maybe he just liked handsome men.
Xu Jingmo faced the crowd and nodded. “Sorry I’m late. A meeting ran long and kept everyone waiting.”
“Hey, it’s no big deal, Cou—” Gao Tianyou almost blurted out the wrong thing and quickly corrected himself. “Dr. Xu… come in and sit down.”
Chen Kongqing had already run to Xu Jingmo’s side, his eyes sparkling. He naturally hooked his arm into the man’s. “Come and sit.”
“Ooh la la,” Qi Chuan led the teasing. “Hugging him before even introducing him?”
Hearing this, Chen Kongqing looked at his table of friends and then up at Xu Jingmo. Xu Jingmo looked down at him silently, something swirling in his narrow, deep phoenix eyes.
Chen Kongqing tightened his grip on the sturdy arm. He turned back to the people at the table.
“Um… I’d like to introduce everyone. This is my boyfriend, Xu Jingmo.”
