Chapter 68: His Large Hand Slid In Before He Knew It…
A sudden evening breeze swept through, carrying grains of dust and sand that scratched into Chen Kongqing’s eyes.
In those two seconds of blurred vision, he thought of those eyes again. Those phoenix eyes he hadn’t dreamed of in a long time. Those eyes that he still couldn’t tell whether they resembled Xu Jingmo’s or Ling Xiao’s more.
“Why have you stopped talking?” Ling Xiao suddenly laughed, revealing a row of stark white teeth. “Chen Kongqing, the truth is you can’t let go of me at all. Stop lying to yourself.”
Chen Kongqing kept his eyes downcast, his thoughts tangled like a mess of hemp rope. He couldn’t break free, couldn’t unravel it.
Ling Xiao’s shoes entered his field of vision, stepping closer.
“I can overlook what happened between you and Xu Jingmo. You can forget how much of a bastard I was before, and we can…” Ling Xiao continued to approach tentatively.
Chen Kongqing clenched his fists and lifted his slightly reddened eyes: “Get lost.”
The moment he looked up, he saw Xu Jingmo strolling toward them from behind Ling Xiao. His tense heartstrings snapped loose, and the rigid tension in his body dissipated.
Xu Jingmo approached leisurely, the gloom in his eyes well-hidden. A smile played on his lips, and his tone was light and airy: “Isn’t this my cousin? What brings you here today?”
Ling Xiao’s gait faltered. As he turned, his tongue pressed against his back molars.
Xu Jingmo walked straight to Chen Kongqing’s side and naturally took hold of the hand that had turned a bit red from the wind. “Why is your hand so cold?”
“It’s okay, my hands are always like this…” Chen Kongqing let him hold it, the tangled mess in his mind beginning to loosen.
Xu Jingmo rubbed the back of his hand. “Let’s go to the car; the heater is on.”
“Mm.” Chen Kongqing nodded, following Xu Jingmo obediently.
Their path was blocked once again. Xu Jingmo and Ling Xiao stood toe-to-toe—white sneakers facing pure black, thin-soled handmade leather shoes. Neither intended to take a step back. Those two sets of similar phoenix eyes met, neither willing to show weakness.
Ling Xiao didn’t want to admit it, but he had to: he was afraid of Xu Jingmo. Since childhood, he had respected—and feared—this taciturn but powerful cousin who excelled in everything: grades, physique, and even height.
Ling Xiao’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard.
Chen Kongqing could feel the tension between them. If a cat or dog walked by right now, they would surely smell the heavy scent of gunpowder. He was worried they might come to blows like before.
Chen Kongqing reached his other hand forward and hugged Xu Jingmo’s sturdy arm. “Let’s go.”
The icy chill in Xu Jingmo’s phoenix eyes melted slightly as he looked down at the rabbit’s hand gripping his arm. The slightly protruding knuckles were tinged with pink against his pale skin. The fire burning in his heart was extinguished by this gentle rain.
The rabbit was holding his arm. But it felt like more than that—it felt like the scales had tipped entirely in his favor.
The two of them walked straight past Ling Xiao.
“Xu Jingmo, you should thank me.” Ling Xiao didn’t chase after them, but he called out cryptically before they were out of earshot.
Xu Jingmo paused for a moment.
Ling Xiao added slowly: “Thank me for these eyes.”
Chen Kongqing looked up at Xu Jingmo, his grip on the man’s arm tightening involuntarily. Xu Jingmo simply rubbed the back of the boy’s hand, smiled at him, and responded with a tone of utter devotion: “As long as he is willing to be with me, anything is fine.”
With that, Xu Jingmo led him away. Chen Kongqing heard Ling Xiao gasping behind them, seemingly fuming with rage.
But he had no time to think about Ling Xiao. He could only think about the eyes.
Does Xu Jingmo really not care? Even if he’s being used as a substitute?
Yet, Xu Jingmo seemed no different than usual—helping him into the car, taking him to dinner, and driving him home, even stopping to tease Black Cat Sheriff. He really didn’t seem to care.
But Chen Kongqing felt that things like this needed to be cleared up. So, while Xu Jingmo was playing with the kitten, he approached with a toy ball.
Black Cat Sheriff immediately scampered to his feet, meowing. He dropped the ball, and the cat snatched it up to play on its own. Chen Kongqing took the opportunity to sit on the armrest of the single-seater sofa.
Xu Jingmo, who had been leaning forward with his elbows on his knees, slowly straightened up. His eyes landed on the slender waist beside him, and further up, the spine hidden beneath a thin knit sweater. The vertebrae seemed to protrude slightly, and his waist—easily held in one hand—pressed against the fabric.
Chen Kongqing suddenly leaned over, his fingers resting lightly on the back of the man’s hand. “Do you… really not care?”
Xu Jingmo knew exactly what he was asking, but he feigned ignorance. “About what?”
“What Ling Xiao said. Do you really… not mind?” The rabbit bit his lip, looking at Xu Jingmo cautiously.
Those perfect phoenix eyes, silent as the sea, flickered with a ripple as he looked up. “If things were truly as he said, I don’t think I’d have the right to care.”
Why is he saying he has no right again?
As if to give him some confidence, the rabbit suddenly leaned down and pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth. “Of course you have the right to care. I’m dating you. If I were really dating you just because you look like Ling Xiao, you would have every right to care. You could even punch me twice.”
His tone was agitated, like a helpful citizen encouraging a victim to defend their rights.
Xu Jingmo felt a hint of sweetness on his lips. “I told you, as long as you’re willing to be with me, anything is fine.”
“No.” A pale finger rested on the man’s shoulder as Chen Kongqing spoke seriously. “We are in a relationship. You don’t have to be so humble. You can’t just think about me; you have yourself too… Your feelings are important. When he said those things, did you really not care? Weren’t you angry?”
A faint scent of herbs enveloped him. Xu Jingmo narrowed his eyes, and the deep, silent sea in his gaze began to ripple. This time, the ripples carried a hint of danger. “I care.”
“Exactly! You clearly care, so why tell me it’s fine?” Chen Kongqing gripped the man’s shoulder. “You should tell me. We should communicate properly.”
“Qingqing is right,” Xu Jingmo said hoarsely.
Suddenly, Chen Kongqing felt a circle of heat wrap around his waist. His body felt weightless.
“Mph.”
He was lifted into the air with one arm. His seat shifted from the armrest to Xu Jingmo’s lap. It was a strange sensation—very firm. How can even his thighs be so muscular?
The rabbit instinctively struggled, but to no avail. His waist was held tightly, his lower back pressed against Xu Jingmo’s abdomen. He was enveloped in a warm embrace. Xu Jingmo rested his chin on the boy’s shoulder. It poked him a little.
At the same time, Xu Jingmo’s lips brushed against his ear, his hot breath fanning against the rabbit’s sensitive neck. “I am a little angry. Can you comfort me?”
Chen Kongqing felt a ticklish sensation on his neck and tried to pull away, his body shivering. He tried to get off the man’s lap.
Xu Jingmo spoke again, sounding pitiful: “Are you unwilling to comfort me?”
“No, it’s just a bit ticklish…” Chen Kongqing had no choice but to stop moving and try his best to adapt to this intimate posture.
Xu Jingmo took the opportunity to kiss the red mark he had bitten earlier. “It’s faded a lot. Almost gone.”
With that, the arm around Chen Kongqing’s waist tightened. Sensing that Xu Jingmo might bite his neck again, Chen Kongqing hurriedly used his hand to block his neck. “No… no. You can’t bite my neck anymore. People will see.”
“They can’t see?” The man asked in a hurt tone. “Do you not want people to know we’re dating?”
“It’s not that…” Chen Kongqing realized that even though Xu Jingmo was much older and usually the one taking care of him, when it came to romance, Xu Jingmo was the “fragile” one. He got hurt so easily and looked so pitiful.
Chen Kongqing tilted his head back, his hair brushing against Xu Jingmo’s chest. “I already told my friends. I was even planning to take you to dinner with them. I’m not letting you bite my neck because I want to hide our relationship; I just think it’s… not great to have marks like that.”
Xu Jingmo looked down at him. “Really?”
From this angle, Chen Kongqing’s eyes were even more beautiful. How can someone be so pretty from every angle? The man’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and the veins on the arm around the boy’s waist pulsed.
Chen Kongqing: “Really.”
“Then I’m still angry. What should I do?” Xu Jingmo stared at him intently.
Chen Kongqing couldn’t withstand that gaze; it felt like it could see right through him. He lowered his head. “What… do you want to do?”
Xu Jingmo rested his chin on the thin shoulder again. “Can I do whatever I want?”
The man’s voice was very raspy. At that moment, his palm squeezed the boy’s waist. Chen Kongqing’s ears turned red instantly. His waist was sensitive and ticklish; that squeeze felt both painful and itchy, and a pink flush bloomed on his cheeks.
He swallowed nervously. He wondered what Xu Jingmo would do after asking that. He always thought Xu Jingmo was a very proper person—sure, he was forceful and fierce during kisses, but he didn’t seem like the type to have many “tricks.” So, he gritted his teeth and gave a small nod. “Mm… you can do whatever you want, as long as it’s not something others can see…”
“You said it, Qingqing,” Xu Jingmo said hoarsely.
Chen Kongqing’s mind was a mess, and he was thinking about whether to add any more conditions.
“Ah!!”
His earlobe was nipped, and the hand that had been around his waist slid inside his clothes before he knew it.
