Chapter 9: Baby, You’re Smothering Me
Chen Ji walked into the dim stairwell. The lights in the club’s stairwell were motion-activated, but at this moment, they remained unlit. In the grayish darkness, his silver pupils stared intently at a massive object draped in black cloth at the corner.
It was square-shaped and looked like an iron cage.
The high-frequency sonic distress signals originated from there.
Human hearing is vastly different from that of a Merman, they cannot distinguish high-frequency sound waves with their senses, let alone understand the meaning behind them.
Chen Ji understood—this was a signal for help.
Chen Ji stood directly facing five burly men pushing the iron cage. They warily used their bodies to shield the cage behind them. The lead man said respectfully, “Guest, are you lost looking for the restroom?”
Chen Ji sniffed. The scent of blood in the air grew thicker. His gaze remained locked on the position of the iron cage, his eyes revealing murderous intent.
The killing intent hidden in the darkness pushed the atmosphere to the brink of danger.
A pair of warm hands reached out, flipping Chen Ji over and pinning him against the wall. “Baby~”
Su Chengwen kissed the back of Chen Ji’s neck, his breath hot and heavy, his tone flippant. “Did you bring a condom?”
Chen Ji felt burning hot from the kiss and struggled against him.
The staff transporting the iron cage coughed. Su Chengwen let out a “Huh?” and looked down. “Holy shit, there are people here?”
“Sorry, sorry. My bad.”
Su Chengwen stopped his movements, his large hand resting on Chen Ji’s waist, lightly stroking it. The gesture was exceptionally intimate.
“Guest, we are transporting auction items. The auction is about to begin. Do you need me to lead you to the hall?”
“Oh, no need.” Su Chengwen gave a playful smirk. “I think I need to hit the restroom first.”
Su Chengwen tightened his grip on Chen Ji’s waist, whispering flirtatiously, “Let’s go, baby. You’re smothering me.”
Chen Ji’s body was stiff. “There’s…”
“I knew you brought it. I’ve been craving you to death~” Su Chengwen lifted him up with one arm, kissing Chen Ji’s thin lips to cut off whatever he was about to say. They left the stairwell in a heated, tangled kiss.
In the stairwell, the lead man tucked the gun he had been hiding behind his back away and ordered his subordinates, “Go get a ‘No Entry’ sign. Everyone, be careful!”
“Also, check out those two men.”
Su Chengwen kissed Chen Ji as they left the stairwell, slamming him against a partition with a “thud.” After a passionate kiss that left their gazes lingering and heavy with tension, he flirtatiously asked a staff member for the location of the restroom.
Chen Ji wiped the marks off his lips.
Su Chengwen rested his arm on Chen Ji’s shoulder in an intimate posture.
In this club, there were surveillance cameras—countless surveillance cameras.
Once inside the restroom, Su Chengwen made sure no one else was there. He lit a cigarette, leaned against the wall, and looked at Chen Ji. “What did you hear just now?”
Chen Ji nodded. “Yes, blood…”
“The blood of a Merman experimental subject.”
As Su Chengwen spoke, he carefully scrutinized Chen Ji’s expression.
What exactly was Chen Ji’s attitude toward the Merman experimental subjects? Did he view them as his own kind? Having lived in a basement for twenty years, did he still consider himself human?
Su Chengwen didn’t know.
He only knew that when he pinned Chen Ji against the wall to kiss him, there was a cold, sharp murderous intent hidden in Chen Ji’s eyes. That killing intent was directed at the staff members transporting the Merman.
In the words of the Commander, that killing intent was aimed at humans.
“No.”
Chen Ji shook his head, denying Su Chengwen’s words.
The blood did not belong to the experimental subject.
Su Chengwen thought Chen Ji didn’t understand him. He put out his cigarette and placed an in-ear headset into his ear. The headset flashed red for three seconds before stopping.
Su Chengwen said to Mo Weiqun on the other end, “Tonight’s auction item is a Merman experimental subject that escaped from the biological research institute.”
“Huh?” Mo Weiqun looked dazed.
Nearby, Ma De grabbed the microphone. “Aren’t the Mermen kept in glass tubes? The research institute uses iris recognition systems. How could one escape? Isn’t that bullshit?”
Su Chengwen: “Check when this invitation was sent out.”
Ma De: “Got it.”
Mo Weiqun snatched the mic back: “What about me? Brother Wen, what do I do?”
Su Chengwen: “You… come pick up Chen Ji in half an hour.”
Mo Weiqun: “Where am I taking Sister-in-law?”
Su Chengwen glanced at Chen Ji. “Take him to my house. Wait for me to get back before you leave.”
Having received his orders, Mo Weiqun wagged his tail like a puppy. “You got it~”
As expected, Brother Wen still valued him the most, entrusting Sister-in-law to his care.
Su Chengwen washed his hands, wiped his face, and led Chen Ji into the auction house. Just as they sat down, Han Lixin walked over.
Chen Ji, sitting on the aisle seat, quietly stuck out his foot…
Han Lixin froze, staring at Chen Ji’s foot, remaining silent for a full ten seconds.
In the auction hall, there were lights. It was very bright. He wore glasses; he wasn’t blind.
Su Chengwen, witnessing everything: “…”
The traces were a bit heavy.
Han Lixin took a long breath. Forget it.
He stepped over Chen Ji and sat next to Su Chengwen. “Commander, have you considered my proposal?”
“Not considering it.” Su Chengwen crossed his legs. “I shed blood and sweat for the organization, but I also have my methods.”
The subtext: Do I look like the kind of sucker who would spend a hundred million to buy a fish for you?
“With a hundred million, I could buy my wife two emerald rings the size of pigeon eggs.”
“You have a wife?”
“Not for now, but I will in the future. What’s your rush?”
Su Chengwen shrugged, his gaze naturally drifting toward Chen Ji.
Chen Ji’s shirt collar was slightly wrinkled—it had been messed up by Su Chengwen earlier in the stairwell. The faint pink, intimate marks were still there. He reached out to straighten Chen Ji’s shirt.
“Why don’t you ever wear your clothes properly?”
No sense of male virtue at all.
Su Chengwen didn’t pull his hand back until everything was perfectly tucked.
Chen Ji carefully pulled a small biscuit out of his pocket and started eating.
“You really don’t let yourself go hungry.”
Su Chengwen said with a smile, spreading his arm out to rest it on the back of Chen Ji’s chair—a gesture of claiming ownership.
The auction soon began.
After eating for a while, Chen Ji leaned against Su Chengwen’s shoulder and fell asleep.
The matter of the iron cage seemed to have been put in the back of his mind.
Su Chengwen let Chen Ji lean on his shoulder while he scrolled through his phone, searching for where to find the largest, best, and most beautiful emeralds.
Only Han Lixin sat with a furrowed brow, waiting for the final item.
The auction proceeded smoothly, and soon it was time for the grand finale.
There was no picture on the screen.
There was no exhibit on the stage.
Only the auctioneer held the gavel.
This was a blind bid.
When the auctioneer announced a starting price of one hundred million, the entire room went silent.
Spending a hundred million on something unknown was undoubtedly a massive gamble.
In the silent auction hall, the sound of a side door opening was particularly loud. A man wearing a mask and a suit walked in, attracting many stares.
As soon as he entered, Chen Ji was startled awake.
He sniffed alertly, turning his head to search, and quickly traced the scent.
He looked at the masked man, the murderous intent reappearing in his silver pupils.
This time, it was much stronger than before!
Under everyone’s gaze, the masked man sat down, looking determined to win. The man beside him raised a paddle. “One hundred million.”
The hall fell into a confused murmur.
The auctioneer called out: “One hundred million once… one hundred million twice.”
Su Chengwen raised his paddle. “Two hundred million.”
The opponent raised the paddle again: “Two hundred and fifty million.”
Su Chengwen: “Three hundred million.”
The opponent: “Three hundred and fifty million.”
Su Chengwen stopped bidding after pushing the price to five hundred million. Through this test, he could confirm that the opponent wanted the Merman in the cage. If they didn’t know a Merman was inside, how could they bear to spend so much money? Looking at the style… they probably weren’t from Tongjiang City.
The item was finally sold for five hundred and fifty million.
The auction ended.
Han Lixin, who had been beside Su Chengwen, was already nowhere to be found.
Ma De’s voice came through the headset: “Brother Wen, the items for this auction were finalized three days ago, and the invitations were also sent out three days ago.”
Three days ago.
A smile touched Su Chengwen’s lips. As expected…
Two days ago, when Su Chengwen went to the underground base, no Merman experimental subjects were missing. The subject escaped last night, and it appeared at the auction today. It was far too coincidental.
Han Lixin is a problem.
