Chapter 10: Falling into the Sea
Su Chengwen stuck one hand in his pocket. “Let’s go~”
The auction hall was crowded. Su Chengwen held Chen Ji’s hand to prevent them from being separated by the throng. He spoke into his headset to the other end: “Mo Weiqun, come to the first-floor lobby to pick someone up.”
Su Chengwen removed the headset in a surveillance blind spot and stuffed it into his pocket. A man in a suit wearing a mask brushed past Chen Ji. Chen Ji suddenly halted his steps, staring fixedly at the man’s retreating back.
“What’s wrong?”
“He’s… bad.”
Su Chengwen followed Chen Ji’s gaze, his brow furrowing. Someone who spends 550 million to buy a Merman wouldn’t be ignorant of what was inside, and wearing a mask was clearly meant to hide his identity.
Su Chengwen’s lips quirked slightly. “Who isn’t bad in your eyes? Hmm?”
“You.”
When Su Chengwen entrusted Chen Ji to Mo Weiqun in the first-floor lobby, his ears felt inexplicably hot.
Mo Weiqun looked at Su Chengwen. “Brother Wen, why are your ears red?”
Su Chengwen touched them. “The auction hall was stuffy.”
Mo Weiqun didn’t suspect anything. “The team is on standby at the entrance.”
“Let them head back.”
“You’re going to act alone?”
“Who said I’m alone?”
“Ah… then who else is there?”
Su Chengwen’s lips curled up. There was still…
Half an hour later.
The transaction concluded.
A large black G-Wagon left from the front entrance. Inside the car, the masked man slowly removed his mask.
Under the cover of night, he pulled back a corner of his leather glove, revealing scales visible on the back of his hand. He frowned deeply and punched the seat cushion in anger.
The scales were out again… out again!
He wondered if this Merman would have a Merman Pearl.
Another twenty minutes later.
The guests had all departed.
A white medium-sized van drove out of the club. Su Chengwen, who had been waiting for a long time, started his car and followed, maintaining a subtle distance.
The van drove from the city to the outskirts, getting more and more remote. The driver clearly noticed the car trailing behind and immediately drove onto the coastal highway, turning into a muddy, narrow dirt road.
Su Chengwen slammed on the brakes.
The Bentley had a low chassis, it couldn’t go in without stalling.
“Goddammit, isn’t this just pure discrimination against rich people?”
Su Chengwen got out of the car. Ten seconds later, an SUV pulled up in front of him. It was Han Lixin’s car. He raised an eyebrow and blocked the vehicle, grinning with a somewhat rogue-like air. “Let’s collaborate, Director Han~”
Inside the car, Han Lixin’s expression was cold as he unlocked the doors.
Su Chengwen sat inside. As the SUV followed the van, both men began to feel something was off—why was this car heading into such a desolate area?
The tires rolled over the sludge. The speed wasn’t fast. Su Chengwen drew his pistol and fired a few warning shots. The driver ahead slowed down significantly. Han Lixin accelerated, using half the car’s body to pin the van’s front wheel.
The van was forced to a stop.
After Su Chengwen restrained the people, he opened the van’s cargo area. Inside was indeed a large iron cage covered with a black cloth. Su Chengwen glanced at Han Lixin; at this moment, Han Lixin’s face showed a relaxed expression.
It was a far cry from how he had looked at the auction.
Su Chengwen pulled off the black cloth.
Curled inside was a blue mermaid. Blue blood leaked from its tail, and its body was huddled as if it were in a deep sleep.
Han Lixin took out a sedative, intending to inject it into the Merman’s tail. Su Chengwen grabbed his wrist.
“Deputy Director Han, this isn’t an experimental subject, is it?”
Han Lixin’s pupils quivered. “What do you mean?”
“You’re the one who let the experimental subject go.” Su Chengwen hadn’t been certain about this initially, but once Han Lixin chased them to the outskirts and pulled out a sedative, he could be sure.
In the entire Biological Research Institute, very few people knew about the Merman experimental subjects. Those with iris access to the base, besides Dr. Tal, probably only included Han Lixin.
The invitation from three days ago meant this Merman had been captured three days ago. Of course, there was another possibility: that within those three days, a Merman would definitely be sent to the auction.
Su Chengwen had considered the second possibility but quickly ruled it out.
If the Merman experimental subject was a transaction between Han Lixin and the auction house, he should have made the escape public long ago to reduce suspicion.
But Han Lixin hadn’t done that.
Furthermore, Han Lixin wouldn’t have chased them to the outskirts just to take the Merman back.
Therefore, Han Lixin knew beforehand that a Merman was going to be auctioned. He let one experimental subject go, intending to hijack this Merman and bring it back to the institute to make up the numbers.
Experimental subjects were identified by numbers; few people knew them.
Even fewer would care about their physical appearance.
Han Lixin sneered. “The Law Enforcer is joking.”
Su Chengwen smiled and withdrew his hand. He used a dagger to pry open the lock, pulled open the iron cage, and dragged the Merman out. “Sorry, this fish concerns the peace between the Merman race and humans. I can’t give it to the institute.”
Just as Su Chengwen was about to take the Merman to the car, the Merman suddenly snapped its eyes open and let out a piercing scream.
The sound was sharp enough to penetrate eardrums. Su Chengwen let go of the Merman and crouched down, unable to bear the pain. Han Lixin did the same.
Amidst the ringing in his ears, a black off-road motorcycle sped toward them. A rider scooped up the Merman by the waist with one arm, propping it on the front seat.
The shrieking seemed to echo right in the ears of Su Chengwen and Han Lixin. Their eardrums suffered immense trauma, leaving them powerless to give chase. They could only watch helplessly as the Merman was taken away.
After recovering, Han Lixin covered his ears and furiously started the car to pursue them.
Su Chengwen lit a cigarette. “No need. They know each other, can’t you tell?”
The Merman screamed, and the motorcycle arrived to take it away without the Merman struggling at all.
That was the only possibility.
Han Lixin glared at Su Chengwen. “You should have let me inject the sedative.”
“Han Lixin, why did you want to replace an experimental subject with a real Merman?”
“Is there any essential difference between the two?”
Han Lixin’s tone was icy.
To think a person like this would actually make the mistake of letting an experimental subject escape.
Just as Su Chengwen was about to speak, the phone in his pocket rang.
It was a call from Mo Weiqun.
As soon as he answered, Mo Weiqun’s voice on the other end sounded shocked and incredulous: “Brother Wen, Sister-in-law he-he-he…”
“What happened to him?”
“He suddenly turned into a Merman, jumped out the window… and f-f-fell into the sea.”
“Fell into the sea?!!!”
Chen Ji was afraid of water. What kind of sea was he falling into? And which window did he jump from?
Mo Weiqun was silent for a long time on the other end before saying in a weak voice: “It seems like it’s because… y-y-you didn’t wear it.”
“Huh? Didn’t wear what?”
“Brother Wen, don’t play dumb.” Sister-in-law already said it.
