Daily Life of a Married Beta Heartthrob - Chapter 5
“Don’t cling to me.” Gu Ying’s cold tone drifted down from above.
Zhao Jinyuan’s breathing hitched. She nuzzled against Gu Ying’s neck, messing up her own bangs before finally looking up, her eyes wet and glistening as she stared at Gu Ying. “But I just want to cling to you.”
Gu Ying met her gaze and simply said, “I’m hungry.”
Upon hearing this, Zhao Jinyuan immediately released Gu Ying and rubbed her own burning cheeks. “I forgot to make breakfast. The kids should be waking up soon, too.” With that, Zhao Jinyuan hurried past Gu Ying toward the kitchen, unable to meet her gaze any longer.
Gu Ying remained where she was. Once Zhao Jinyuan had left, she slowly turned to look in the direction of the kitchen. Her ink-colored eyes were like the deep, dark night—bottomless, unreadable. Because of her careless remark, Zhao Jinyuan had immediately taken action. She had already placed her heart entirely in Gu Ying’s hands. Next time… it wouldn’t fail again.
By 7:00 AM, Zhao Jinyuan had finished breakfast and gone to the children’s room to wake them up. She found that Gu Dong had already started getting dressed, but Gu Chun was still sleeping.
“Xiao Chun, time to wake up.” Her voice was gentle, sweet, and overflowing with doting affection.
Gu Chun had actually been awake for a while, but she didn’t open her eyes immediately. It wasn’t until Zhao Jinyuan reached out and pinched her nose that she feigned a groggy waking state. She called out softly, “Mommy.”
Zhao Jinyuan’s eyes curved into crescents at the sound. Gu Chun’s delicate face was flushed pink, looking exactly like a ripe apple. Zhao Jinyuan found her irresistibly cute and couldn’t help but lean down to kiss her rosy cheek. “Xiao Chun, get up and eat breakfast.”
Gu Chun curled her lips imperceptibly, reaching up to hug Zhao Jinyuan’s neck and acting coquettishly. “I want a kiss on the left side too, Mommy.”
Zhao Jinyuan planted another kiss on Gu Chun’s other cheek.
Suddenly, she felt a slight tug on her hem. Zhao Jinyuan straightened up and looked down, only to bump into Gu Dong’s clean, expectant eyes. Gu Dong pointed to her own cheek, her voice soft and full of the unique, childish innocence of a little kid. “Mommy, I want one too.”
Zhao Jinyuan’s heart melted. She wouldn’t refuse them, of course. She bent down, picked up Gu Dong, and planted kisses on both of her cheeks as well. Gu Dong laughed immediately, her eyes curving into tiny crescent moons as she kissed Zhao Jinyuan’s cheek. “Kissing Mommy.”
Although Gu Dong and Gu Chun weren’t her own flesh and blood, they were truly adorable. Zhao Jinyuan set Gu Dong down and patted her head, smiling. “Gu Dong is so well-behaved.” She turned to Gu Chun, who was still on the bed. “Xiao Chun, hurry up and get up, or you’ll be late.”
Gu Chun nodded vigorously, her voice just as soft. “I know.”
Zhao Jinyuan nodded, satisfied, and left the room.
As soon as Zhao Jinyuan was gone, Gu Dong’s smile vanished. She turned to look at Gu Chun, who was smiling lazily while sprawled on the bed. “Her scent of Gu Ying is even stronger now.”
Gu Chun pulled herself up slowly, moving with a languid air that was completely different from the soft, cute child she had been a moment ago. “Isn’t that normal? They are a couple; they were bound to do it sooner or later.”
Gu Dong furrowed her brows slightly. “That message we sent from Gu Ying’s phone yesterday had absolutely no effect.”
Gu Chun laughed. “Maybe it was a catalyst.”
Hearing this, Gu Dong rolled her eyes in annoyance. Her small face tightened, and her tone carried a mix of irritability and dissatisfaction. “What kind of snide remarks are you making? If things keep going like this, we’ll be stuck as their children for the rest of our lives.”
“Is it comfortable for you to watch them being lovey-dovey every single day?”
Gu Chun shrugged, her eyes flashing with thoughts no one could decipher. “You’re just too impatient.”
“If we’re going to transform, we have to become Omegas first…”
This morning, Zhao Jinyuan and Gu Ying drove the children to school. It was convenient, so they could go shopping afterward.
When getting out of the car, Zhao Jinyuan noticed that Gu Ying wasn’t wearing that gold bracelet today. After a moment of thought, she handed her small bag to Gu Ying. “Wife, carry this for me.” There were bound to be people wearing similar outfits, and since Gu Ying just had plain, black, straight hair, Zhao Jinyuan was worried she might misidentify her without a unique feature.
Gu Ying’s expression remained indifferent. She took the bag without a word and walked straight toward a store selling suppressants, leaving Zhao Jinyuan trailing behind.
Zhao Jinyuan felt a bit unhappy, but she pampered her wife, so she wouldn’t blame Gu Ying for such a small thing. She trotted to catch up and reached out to naturally hook her arm through Gu Ying’s. Zhao Jinyuan smiled, her lips curling up. “Wife, we have to walk together.” What if Gu Ying needed to go to the bathroom or something? She wouldn’t be able to cling to her then, and that’s when the bag would come in handy.
Zhao Jinyuan’s phoenix eyes were her most charming feature, always appearing as though they were smiling. Her eye corners were slightly lifted, and her pupils were clear and bright. When she looked at someone with her soft, sweet expression, it made their heart melt instantly.
Gu Ying didn’t talk much. She stared fixedly at Zhao Jinyuan, and whatever she was thinking, her expression only grew colder.
Zhao Jinyuan looked ahead, not noticing the change in Gu Ying. She happily led Gu Ying into the mall, pointing at a store with pink decor. “This is the HE2 reagent brand. Fang Bai loves buying their suppressants.”
“Wife, do you want to take a look?”
Gu Ying agreed and let Zhao Jinyuan pull her into the store.
Unlike the high-spirited Zhao Jinyuan, Gu Ying remained wooden-faced, like a backdrop. She didn’t speak or smile, only answering when Zhao Jinyuan asked her a question.
Zhao Jinyuan, her brows dancing with smiles, picked up one bottle of suppressant after another in various flavors, asking Gu Ying if she wanted to buy them. She knew a little bit about suppressants; HE2 was the most popular brand on the market—fast-acting, non-irritating to the glands, and with minimal side effects. Furthermore, they were oral liquids available in various flavors.
Regardless of whether they were Alpha or Omega, long-term use of suppressants caused side effects like dizziness, chest tightness, or in severe cases, pheromone disruption. This was why Alphas and Omegas rarely chose to be with Betas. Because Betas couldn’t mark or be marked, being with one meant being dependent on suppressants for life.
Thinking of this, Zhao Jinyuan felt a little melancholy. Realizing she had been lost in thought for too long, she placed the orange-flavored suppressant back on the shelf. She turned around, lowering her head to hook her pinky finger around the person behind her, but before she could speak, a hand pressed down on her shoulder.
Then came a teasing voice: “Miss, you’re a bit too enthusiastic.”
Zhao Jinyuan was startled by the sudden turn of events. She widened her eyes and scanned the person’s outfit—not Gu Ying’s clothes, and no bag she had handed her.
This isn’t Gu Ying!
But Gu Ying had clearly been standing behind her; she had subconsciously assumed Gu Ying wouldn’t wander off.
Zhao Jinyuan let go and quickly stepped back, apologizing profusely. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I—I didn’t mean to.”
The person before her was slender, with fair, rosy skin. A blue lace choker was tied around her long, elegant neck, the soft satin accentuating her pale skin. The lace sat gently above her collarbone, adding an air of submissiveness and refinement. It was clearly an Omega—most Omegas wore these chokers to conceal their glands.
She had just taken the initiative to hook the finger of a strange Omega. If the Omega wanted to, she could be sued for harassment.
An anxious look appeared in Zhao Jinyuan’s eyes. Her phoenix eyes were wide, the corners slightly reddened, and her delicate, long eyebrows were knit together. She looked pitiful and heart-wrenching.
“I—I—” The strange Omega stood there without leaving, seemingly waiting to hear what else she had to say, but Zhao Jinyuan didn’t know what to say besides apologizing. Her uneasy demeanor seemed to amuse the stranger; Zhao Jinyuan saw the corners of the Omega’s mouth curl up in a smile.
Zhao Jinyuan pursed her lips and began scanning the surroundings for Gu Ying.
“Are you looking for someone?” The Omega’s voice was gentle, like a light breeze brushing past, bringing a hint of softness.
Zhao Jinyuan turned her gaze back to the Omega and nodded stiffly. She truly didn’t know how to speak to a strange Omega, especially after what she had just done.
The Omega laughed softly. “Don’t be nervous. I won’t eat you.”
Zhao Jinyuan froze. How come… she sounds like Lin Dong?
She shook the bizarre thought from her mind and forced herself to stand straight, trying to act natural. “I’m not nervous. Does this Miss have any other business with me?”
Zhao Jinyuan claimed she wasn’t nervous, but with her eyelashes fluttering rapidly, how could anyone not notice her true state?
“Hmm…”
“I wanted to get to know you. My name is Jin Mingtian.”
Hearing this, Zhao Jinyuan’s mind went blank for a second. Want to get to know her? This sounded like the legendary “hitting on someone.” If I think that, would I be too narcissistic?
After rolling the thought over in her mind, Zhao Jinyuan let out a breath and declined directly. “Thank you, but I don’t get too close to Omegas.” She was a woman with a wife; she wouldn’t do anything that would cause Gu Ying to misunderstand.
Suddenly, Gu Ying’s voice rang out from the side: “Why are you here?”
Zhao Jinyuan’s eyes lit up. She quickly looked toward the source of the voice. The familiar clothes, the familiar bag—it was Gu Ying!
Zhao Jinyuan ran over to Gu Ying, frowning, and acting wronged. “Why didn’t you tell me when you walked away?” She almost grabbed the wrong person just now.
“Do you know I was worried?” Zhao Jinyuan chattered on, pouring all her feelings out to Gu Ying.
Gu Ying, however, wasn’t paying attention to Zhao Jinyuan. She stared at Jin Mingtian and said quietly, “Go back to school.”
Jin Mingtian smiled, her beautiful face showing a hint of shamelessness. “It was you, Mother, who told us we could leave school at will.”
Zhao Jinyuan was still nursing her dissatisfaction that Gu Ying had ignored her, but upon hearing Jin Mingtian’s words, she was shocked. Her face was a mask of confusion. She reached out and tugged on Gu Ying’s sleeve, forcing Gu Ying to look at her. “Mother? Gu Ying, you have a child this old?!”
“Why did you hide this from me?!” Zhao Jinyuan’s eye rims were red with anxiety, a blush of red staining her fair skin. She looked from the cold, indifferent Gu Ying to the slender, tiny Omega beside her, and immediately began lecturing: “Gu Ying! I’m angry!”
“If you told me, I wouldn’t have minded. Why would you hide it from me? I hate being lied to the most!”
Zhao Jinyuan was about to continue her frantic tirade when a hand pinched her nose, making her speech sound like a little pig’s snorting. Gu Ying sighed, feeling a bit helpless for the first time. She looked down at Zhao Jinyuan’s moist eyes and said, “Are you an idiot?”
“You believe everything people tell you.”
Jin Mingtian covered her face and chuckled. “This Miss, I’m actually Gu Ying’s ex-ex-girlfriend.”
Gu Ying’s indifferent gaze swept lightly past Jin Mingtian, but she didn’t bother to explain further.
Zhao Jinyuan’s mouth opened and closed, and she fell silent. Gu Ying saw this and released her nose; Zhao Jinyuan’s skin was thin and tender, and it was already slightly red from the pinch.
Gu Ying thought for a moment, reached out, and patted Zhao Jinyuan’s shoulder. “I only have two daughters, Gu Dong and Gu Chun.”
Zhao Jinyuan’s long lashes fluttered. She slowly looked toward Jin Mingtian, her breathing catching in her throat. Not a daughter, but an ex-girlfriend. Gu Ying had even dated Omegas.
Damn it! Now I’m even angrier!
Another ex! Why does Gu Ying have so many exes?
Zhao Jinyuan, feeling stifled, reached out and grabbed Gu Ying’s waist, glaring at Jin Mingtian as if to assert her sovereignty. She was being a bit overbearing, but also a bit stubborn. Anyone with eyes could see that Zhao Jinyuan’s possessiveness toward Gu Ying was growing stronger. Zhao Jinyuan had always been straightforward, whether in her personality, temper, or the way she spoke and acted.
Jin Mingtian narrowed her eyes and started calculating: “Gu Ying, I’m still waiting for you to come back.”
This didn’t have any effect on Gu Ying; instead, it provoked hostility from Zhao Jinyuan. She stared fixedly at Jin Mingtian, looking tense. The more silent Gu Ying remained, the angrier Zhao Jinyuan became. At this point, she didn’t care about Omegas or anything else; she grabbed Gu Ying and turned to leave.
But Gu Ying stood her ground, even pulling her hand away. “I’ll talk to her.”
Zhao Jinyuan furrowed her brows, her anger already hot enough to set the surroundings on fire. Looking at Gu Ying’s unmoved face, Zhao Jinyuan said fiercely, “I am very unhappy.”
Gu Ying replied calmly, “I see.”
Zhao Jinyuan was choked up by those three words. Feeling a rush of anxiety, she stomped off, looking stifled. However, near the entrance, Zhao Jinyuan looked back in Gu Ying’s direction. Seeing that Gu Ying was standing with her back to her, and seemed to be standing very close to Jin Mingtian, Zhao Jinyuan’s eyes rolled, and she carefully ran back, hiding behind a different shelf to prick up her ears and listen.
Gu Ying, of course, knew that Zhao Jinyuan had run back.
She looked at Jin Mingtian and asked, “What are you doing teasing her with this look?”
Jin Mingtian glanced at the shelf nearby and smiled. “What, does it break your heart?”
“Do you really like her, Gu Ying?”
“Have you forgotten what you used to tell me?”
Gu Ying said, “Go back to school. Stop running around.”
Jin Mingtian yawned. “Yes, yes, I must always listen to what Mother says.”
Gu Ying didn’t take Jin Mingtian’s appearance seriously; she treated Jin Mingtian’s words like air, only saying what she wanted to say: “Don’t make me angry.”
Zhao Jinyuan hid and eavesdropped. When the voices faded, she cautiously lifted her head to look at the next aisle, only to find that Gu Ying and the others were already gone.
Pursing her lips unhappily, Zhao Jinyuan straightened up, grabbed a bottle of mango-flavored suppressant, paid for it, and walked out. When she saw Gu Ying in the car, Zhao Jinyuan got in and slammed the door so hard it sounded like a thunderclap. Fastening her seatbelt, Zhao Jinyuan hugged her phone, stayed silent, and kept her head turned toward the window.
Gu Ying couldn’t be bothered to comfort her; Betas were always getting angry, but their anger usually subsided on its own after a while, so there was no need to waste breath. To use a modern term, Betas were too “lovey-dovey.” This was good for her; there was no need for explanations or comfort.
Zhao Jinyuan held it in for a while. Gu Ying could manage to stay silent, but she couldn’t. She turned back to look at Gu Ying and raised her voice. “Are your exes just incredibly bored? I’ve run into two of them in just the last few days!”
Gu Ying didn’t speak. She turned the steering wheel, taking the car around a right turn into a small alley before coming to a stop.
Zhao Jinyuan continued, “I get jealous, do you know that?” Exactly, I’m dying of jealousy. One after another, they seemed unable to stop thinking about her wife. Gu Ying must be exceptionally talented for people to be this obsessed with her.
Damn it! It’s infuriating.
I really want to kiss Gu Ying right in front of them, so Lin Dong or Jin Mingtian or whoever know that I’m the one who is Gu Ying’s lover now.
Zhao Jinyuan glanced at Gu Ying time and again. Seeing that Gu Ying showed no reaction, her anger only flared higher. She threw the suppressant she was holding at Gu Ying, opened the car door, and stepped out. “I’m not shopping anymore; I’ll take a taxi back myself.” After saying that, Zhao Jinyuan felt a bit regretful—she felt she might have been too fierce.
Sigh, whatever.
I need to calm down on my own. No one likes someone who’s always angry. Gu Ying and Jin Mingtian didn’t do anything; I shouldn’t be like this.
Zhao Jinyuan leaned over the car window, her voice tiny. “That’s the suppressant I bought, mango flavored.” HE2 suppressants are so expensive; it cost half a month’s salary.
“I asked you what you liked, but you always said there was nothing you liked, so I bought what I liked.”
Gu Ying lifted her eyelids and said thank you. Just as she expected, she didn’t need to comfort this Beta.
The Beta loves her.
