Daily Life of a Married Beta Heartthrob - Chapter 1
3… 2… 1.
It was 5:00 PM.
Zhao Jinyuan watched the minute hand on the wall clock, her eyes lighting up. She grabbed her satchel, tilted her head toward the back room, and called out, “Fang Bai, I’m heading out!”
Fang Bai was currently bent over, correcting a little girl’s dance posture. Without looking up, she replied, “Go, go, go. If you don’t hurry, the flower shop will be closed.” Two days ago, this girl had been rambling on about how it was her one-month wedding anniversary and that she had to celebrate.
Fang Bai felt it was a bit exaggerated, but since this was her close friend’s first partner, she understood the need to make a gesture. She had suggested that Zhao Jinyuan just take the day off, but Zhao Jinyuan said her wife had to work, so staying home wouldn’t mean seeing her anyway.
“Teacher Fang, is Teacher Zhao in such a rush to see her wife?” The high-pitched, childish voice made Fang Bai smile gently, her voice dropping to a lower register. “That’s right. Xiao Hui, don’t keep thinking about Teacher Zhao. Let’s try the steps one more time.”
The news of Zhao Jinyuan’s marriage had already been broadcast all over her social media. Since they were dance teachers, they had contact information for the parents, and parents tended to gossip, so it wasn’t strange that the children knew.
The girl named Xiao Hui frowned, looking confused. “But Teacher Zhao promised to marry me last time. Why did she turn around and marry someone else?”
Another voice piped up, “Teacher Zhao promised me too. She said that when I grow up, she’ll be with me.”
Fang Bai wanted to sigh and laugh at the same time. Zhao Jinyuan was blessed with good looks, especially those beautiful, phoenix-shaped eyes that always seemed gentle and affectionate. Although she was a bit slow, her looks were undeniable; she attracted classmates back in school and charmed children at work. Fang Bai rubbed the child’s hair and said softly, “Teacher Zhao also told me she wanted to marry me. She’s just teasing you, you can’t believe her.”
On the other side of town, Zhao Jinyuan was already riding her small electric scooter toward the flower shop.
A smile remained on her face the entire way.
She was very fond of her wife, even though her wife was somewhat cold and distant, rarely paying much attention to her.
But her wife was an Omega. Zhao Jinyuan had never imagined that an ordinary Beta like herself could ever marry an Omega.
After picking up the custom bouquet from the florist and the custom necklace from the jewelry store, Zhao Jinyuan checked the time every few minutes, worried that she wouldn’t make it home before her wife did.
Flowers, a gift… and the toys she’d prepared for the two children.
After all the running around, she arrived home just before 6:00 PM.
Zhao Jinyuan placed the gifts on the coffee table, then stood at the door holding the bouquet, her fair face betraying a whirlwind of emotions. Her grip on the flowers tightened slightly. To be honest, she was a bit nervous, unsure if her wife would actually like the gifts.
Not long after, the sound of keys turning in the lock echoed through the entryway.
Zhao Jinyuan kept her eyes wide open, her ears turning bright red from tension. The metal door swung open to reveal the tall figure of her wife, leading two children by the hand.
After a brief, fleeting glance at the gold bracelet on her wife’s wrist, Zhao Jinyuan quickly put on a smile and held out the flowers. “Gu Ying, you’re home.” Her smile was sweet, and her voice was even sweeter.
Gu Ying didn’t say a word, just watched Zhao Jinyuan silently.
Gu Ying’s silence only made Zhao Jinyuan more nervous. Her earlobes and cheeks burned a deeper red. She lifted her thin eyelids, her dark, clear pupils full of shyness. “Today is our one-month anniversary.”
Gu Ying’s expression remained unchanged as she took the flowers and said indifferently, “I know.”
Zhao Jinyuan pursed her lips, her beautiful phoenix eyes drooping, making her look wronged and pitiful. “Do you not like them?”
Gu Ying replied, “I like them.”
Gu Ying’s “I like them” lacked any real conviction. Zhao Jinyuan felt a bit deflated; Gu Ying probably didn’t like them at all, and only said she did because she saw that Zhao Jinyuan had gone through the trouble of buying them.
More enthusiastic than Gu Ying were the two children. The two little girls, who barely reached her waist, grabbed her legs one on each side, tilted their heads, and chirped, “Mommy, we’ve been together for a month too. Why didn’t we get any flowers?”
Feeling the children’s embrace, the smile returned to Zhao Jinyuan’s face. She reached out and patted their heads. “I’m sorry. Next time, Mommy will remember to buy some for Xiao Dong and Xiao Chun, too. Will you forgive Mommy this time?”
“Okay!”
Zhao Jinyuan’s low spirits vanished instantly. She looked up and turned her gaze back to Gu Ying, her eyes sparkling. “Gu Ying, come inside. I bought you a gift, too.”
Gu Ying’s gaze swept lightly over the face that was so perfect it hardly seemed real, and she hummed in agreement. “Let’s go inside.”
Once in the house, she watched as Zhao Jinyuan happily presented her with an exquisite gift box.
Gu Ying opened it, took one look, and then closed the box, placing it back on the coffee table. She showed no surprise or joy, her flat mouth remaining in a straight line.
Seeing Gu Ying’s reaction, Zhao Jinyuan asked again, “Do you not like it?” Her Omega wife didn’t like to talk and didn’t like to show emotion on her face; she found it impossible to guess what her wife was thinking.
Gu Ying gave the same answer: “I like it.” The emotionless tone only made it sound like she was brushing her off.
Zhao Jinyuan started to get angry. She furrowed her brow and raised her voice, “Gu Ying, today is our one-month anniversary! You don’t take it seriously at all!” Her delicate, long eyebrows were knit together, making her frustration clear.
Gu Ying’s eyelashes fluttered. The next moment, Gu Chun and Gu Dong, who had been playing with their new toys nearby, ran over to comfort Zhao Jinyuan. “Mommy, don’t be angry. Mother is just like that.”
“Yes, yes, she’s a stone-face.”
Zhao Jinyuan’s eye rims turned faintly red. “I’m not angry. You two go back to your room with your toys. This is a matter between adults.”
Gu Dong and Gu Chun exchanged a look, then glanced at Gu Ying before obediently taking their toys into their bedroom.
Zhao Jinyuan crossed her arms, leaned against the sofa, and turned her head away, practically screaming “Come comfort me” with her entire posture.
Gu Ying stared at Zhao Jinyuan’s profile, her eyes darkening slightly. Instead of choosing to comfort her, she said, “Zhao Jinyuan, look at me.”
Zhao Jinyuan replied, “No.” Though she was very fond of Gu Ying, she wasn’t a doormat. “If you don’t like me, why did you marry me?”
“I knew it. No one would really like a plain Beta like me.”
Gu Ying wasn’t flustered by a few words. She reached out, pressed her hand onto Zhao Jinyuan’s shoulder, and repeated, “Zhao Jinyuan, I told you to look at me.”
Zhao Jinyuan blinked, her head turning involuntarily. Tears were already welling up in her eyes, threatening to spill over with every blink.
Gu Ying moved her fingers upward, pressing them against Zhao Jinyuan’s lips. “You should know what I’ve wanted all along.”
Gu Ying’s fingers were cool, the sensation against her lips stark and clear.
Even though Gu Ying’s expression and tone were cold, Zhao Jinyuan understood her meaning immediately. Her train of thought was derailed, and when she thought about what Gu Ying wanted, her face turned completely red.
The sulkiness evaporated instantly. Gu Ying’s gaze was heavy, carrying a faint, clinging weight.
Zhao Jinyuan’s eyes darted around shyly. “This… this… I can’t mark you. Doing that kind of thing won’t make you happy.” The reason why Omegas usually didn’t choose to be with Betas was because of their heat cycles. Without suppressants, only an Alpha’s pheromones could alleviate an Omega’s heat.
Ever since their wedding night, they should have done it, but she didn’t know how, so she had always turned Gu Ying away.
Gu Ying pulled her hand back and stood up. “Zhao Jinyuan, it’s you who doesn’t like me.”
Zhao Jinyuan’s eyes widened, and tears rolled down her cheeks. She scrambled up, opened her arms to hug Gu Ying, and hurriedly stood on her tiptoes to kiss her cheek. “No! I like you the most!”
At first, she had only liked Gu Ying moderately. She suffered from face-blindness and couldn’t distinguish people’s features well; she only felt that Gu Ying had a refined temperament and a great figure. Besides, her mothers told her that Gu Ying was even better-looking than a movie star.
Gu Ying remained cold and aloof. “You only married me because I’m an Omega.”
Zhao Jinyuan frowned and kissed Gu Ying’s face again. “I really like you the most.” She couldn’t deny that at the beginning, she really had married her because Gu Ying was an Omega.
Her own mother was an Omega, gentle and kind, so she had longed for an Omega wife since she was a child. In school, everyone was always discussing Omegas and Alphas.
She inevitably developed a desire for an Omega, and she had assumed she would never have one of her own. So, when Gu Ying approached her to get married, she was surprised and happy, and naturally agreed.
There hadn’t been much affection then, but after living together for a while, she had truly grown to love Gu Ying, and not just because of her gender.
It was because of Gu Ying herself.
“Gu Ying, you can’t be angry, you’ll get ugly if you are.” Zhao Jinyuan wrapped her arms around Gu Ying’s neck, acting coquettishly. “I’m sorry, okay? I won’t lose my temper anymore.”
Gu Ying lowered her eyes. “So, are you willing tonight?”
Zhao Jinyuan’s body stiffened. She thought about it over and over again, and finally, under Gu Ying’s cold gaze, she whispered, “I know.”
“But what if I hurt you? Will you be angry?”
“And I’m not an Alpha, I can’t release pheromones.” Zhao Jinyuan started to feel sad again as she spoke. “I can’t treat you the way your Alpha ex-wife did. Will you look down on me?”
Gu Ying frowned, reached out to pull Zhao Jinyuan off her, and stared into her beautiful eyes. Her thin lips parted slightly. “It is enough that I want you.”
After living together for a month, she found the person in front of her to be far noisier than she had imagined. Honestly, she preferred quiet people.
But…
Gu Ying gripped the back of Zhao Jinyuan’s neck, her husky voice as cold as ice, sending a chill down her spine. “You just need to get washed up. Don’t let me smell any sweat.”
“And… the smell of urine.”
Zhao Jinyuan blinked three times in a row, looking up at Gu Ying, wondering what she was thinking. A deep crimson blush spread from her cheeks all the way to her neck. “Gu Ying, do you say things like that to your ex-wife too?” She wasn’t entirely ignorant; she had watched films, but when it came to reality, she felt helpless, not knowing what she was supposed to do.
Zhao Jinyuan had fair skin, and the flush on her face made her look like a ripe peach. Her eyes were wet, and traces of tears remained, making her look incredibly tempting.
Gu Ying’s gaze never left her face, taking in every expression. She asked, “Does it bother you?”
“If it bothers you, we should just get a divorce.”
Upon hearing this, Zhao Jinyuan shook her head frantically. She reached out, took Gu Ying’s hand, and pressed it against her own cheek, then looked up at her and smiled sweetly. “I don’t mind. I was just curious.”
“Gu Ying, are you angry? I’m sorry.” She couldn’t help but wonder what Gu Ying was like in bed, because Gu Ying was always so calm; she had never seen any expression other than indifference on her face.
Zhao Jinyuan clung to Gu Ying again. She was a head shorter than her, so her lips happened to brush against Gu Ying’s neck. She gave a light kiss and whispered, “I will get very, very clean.”
It had been a month. She shouldn’t run away anymore! If she didn’t know how, she would learn, or else her wife might run off!
Besides, it was their anniversary, and her wife had said she wanted to do it, so she should agree.
Feeling the soft warmth at her neck, Gu Ying responded coolly, “Mm.”
Back in their little room, Gu Chun held the toy Zhao Jinyuan had bought for her and said lazily, “Why are humans so stupid?” She was led around by the nose by Gu Ying so easily.
Gu Dong lay on the bed, swinging her legs. “I want to hug her, too.”
“Gu Ying is too cunning. She created us, but just leaves me here to watch.”
Gu Chun put down the toy and looked out the window. The sun was setting in the west, painting the sky in shades of yellow. After a moment, Gu Chun smiled slowly. “Xiao Dong, can’t we grow bigger?”
Gu Dong stopped swinging her legs, and a look of deep thought appeared on a face identical to Gu Chun’s.
Outside the window, the sunlight spilled in, stretching the shadows of the two little figures long across the room.
“But we can’t grow a face exactly like Gu Ying’s.”
“Dummy, just make Gu Ying think the human is cheating.”
