- Chapter 3 - The 'Crown Prince' Who Sells Matches
The sky was just beginning to lighten. Due to his internal clock, Wang Xinghe still opened his eyes with a yawn.
Instantly, he met a pair of deep, handsome, phoenix-like eyes.
He was slightly stunned. “You’re awake?”
Lu Jingze nodded. “Morning, Brother Xinghe. You’re a good sleeper; you didn’t even drool.”
Wang Xinghe was puzzled. “Huh?” He didn’t understand what he meant.
Lu Jingze smiled, sat up, and started putting on his shoes. “Brother Xinghe, let’s go home. I don’t like hospitals.”
Home?
What home?
Wang Xinghe’s head felt a little dizzy. He didn’t get what this kid was talking about.
Could it be that he remembered? Wang Xinghe’s eyes lit up.
He stood up, and the down jacket he was wearing slid off. He then realized he had been covered by another down jacket—the one the kid had given him. He was quite thoughtful.
He stood up. After a night of being curled up, he felt a little sore. He stretched and handed the down jacket back. “Here, put this on. It’s windy outside.”
Lu Jingze took it and put it on. It was a little small, but much better than the even smaller clothes he had on underneath.
After paying the bill, they left the hospital.
They arrived at the parking lot, and Wang Xinghe started the car. “Did you remember where your home is?”
“No.” Lu Jingze lowered his eyes, hiding the hostility within them.
“Sigh, let’s just go to the police station. With your name and appearance, they’ll probably be able to match it to your ID card address quickly,” Wang Xinghe said, turning on the heater and raising the temperature.
Lu Jingze suddenly turned his face, his eyes looking a little vulnerable. “Brother Xinghe, when you mentioned ‘home’ just now, I felt an instinctive fear… as if I had escaped from home…”
Wang Xinghe’s eyes widened. He found it hard to believe.
“Even if you caused a huge problem, home is always home. How could your family harm you? They must be worried sick after your sudden disappearance,” Wang Xinghe reasoned.
Lu Jingze abruptly pulled his sweater up, revealing his muscular chest.
The soft orange light last night had made it hard to see. Now, Wang Xinghe saw a bowl-sized circular scar on Lu Jingze’s chest.
“In my fragmented memories, this looks like my mom stabbed me with a broken beer bottle.”
Wang Xinghe’s scalp went numb. How was that possible?
“Your biological mom or your stepmom?” Wang Xinghe blurted out the question, then felt it was too abrupt.
Finally, he sighed. “Forget it. We’ll wait for you to remember. If you really did escape, sending you back recklessly would be no different from sending you to your death.”
Wang Xinghe started the car, talking as he drove. “Stay here and help me out at the shop. I’ll pay you a worker’s wage. You don’t have any ID or anything else right now.”
Hearing this, Lu Jingze’s phoenix eyes narrowed slightly. When seen head-on, the look was extremely intimidating and wary.
But Wang Xinghe, while driving, continued to mumble to himself, “When you feel a bit better, we’ll go back and get an MRI and a full check-up to help you regain your memory sooner.”
Lu Jingze’s previously guarded eyes relaxed slightly. He looked at the dilapidated tile houses flying by outside the window and said casually, “Brother Xinghe, are you this nice to everyone?”
Wang Xinghe laughed. “I’m not a bodhisattva; how could I be nice to everyone?”
“Is that so?” Last night, he was dirtier than a beggar, and Wang Xinghe couldn’t even see his face. He didn’t want money or anything else.
He just took a stranger home. If he wasn’t a bodhisattva, was he an angel?
He looked at Wang Xinghe’s gentle, beautiful profile reflected in the glass.
He gave a self-deprecating, half-joking smile. “Brother Xinghe, when I looked up at you last night, I thought I had frozen to death and an angel had come to take me.”
“Pff, ha ha ha—” Wang Xinghe was completely amused by him.
“You’re a funny kid…”
But then he thought of Lu Jingze’s situation, and his smile faded. If he hadn’t met him, would he have really frozen to death on the street?
The northern seaside was so cold.
“First, eat and take your medicine. Then I’ll take you to buy some clothes. I’ll also need to get you a pillow and bedding,” Wang Xinghe said, a bit conflicted.
For clothes, he could buy Anta or Li-Ning; they’re more cost-effective. But buying bedding and pillows from a shop would be too expensive and a rip-off.
He wondered if the kid would mind if he bought them at the market.
Since his own shop wasn’t open, Wang Xinghe took him to Auntie Song’s bun shop.
“Oh! Little Wang, why didn’t you open your shop today? I called you, and I couldn’t get through. I thought something had happened to you,” Auntie Song said, looking Wang Xinghe up and down.
Wang Xinghe smiled. “I’m fine, Auntie Song. My phone died, and I didn’t see it.”
“Who’s this handsome young man?” Auntie Song’s eyes were drawn to the tall and handsome Lu Jingze behind him.
Lu Jingze politely greeted her. “Hello, Auntie Song.”
“Wow, who is this handsome young man? Does he have a girlfriend? Auntie Song can introduce him to someone,” Auntie Song’s plump face was filled with a smile as she asked again.
Wang Xinghe quickly pulled Auntie Song away. “Auntie Song, he’s still in college. We’re here for breakfast. I’ll have a meat bun with sauce and a bowl of tofu pudding. How about you?”
Wang Xinghe turned to Lu Jingze. He had never eaten these things before, but he smiled and echoed, “The same as you.”
“Auntie Song, two of each,” Wang Xinghe said, sitting down on a stool. He took out his fast charger and started charging his phone.
During this time, he also got up to grab disposable chopsticks, some pickled vegetables, and vinegar before coming back.
Auntie Song came out from the back kitchen with the tofu pudding and buns and placed them on the table.
“Eat up. If it’s not enough, just ask for more. Auntie will make sure you have plenty,” Auntie Song said with a smile before returning to the back.
Wang Xinghe, with practiced ease, picked up a steaming hot bun, took a bite, and then dipped it into the savory tofu pudding.
He put it in his mouth, his face showing a look of pure happiness and satisfaction.
Lu Jingze watched him and did the same.
He first took a bite. The bun’s wrapper was soft and fluffy, and the sauce-filled meat was savory and delicious.
Then he dipped it into the tofu pudding.
The savory flavor mixed with the salty taste of the tofu pudding was surprisingly good.
Lu Jingze had never eaten food from a small shop like this before.
Eating it now opened up a new world for him.
He watched Lu Jingze eat one bun after another, looking as if he were starving.
But to Wang Xinghe, it was a different sight.
Pity flashed in Wang Xinghe’s eyes: “This kid is so pitiful. His family doesn’t seem to lack money, but looking at him, he probably couldn’t even get enough to eat on a normal day.”
Perhaps Wang Xinghe’s gaze was too intense, as Lu Jingze looked up.
He pursed his lips, feeling a rare moment of embarrassment.
Seeing his somewhat dazed look, Wang Xinghe’s eyes curved into a smile. “Auntie Song’s buns are delicious, aren’t they?”
Lu Jingze nodded, then changed the subject. “But I like your knife-cut noodles more, Brother Xinghe. No one can compare to you.”
Wang Xinghe burst out laughing. If he wasn’t eating, he would have reached out and ruffled the kid’s hair.
Why is he so well-behaved and so cute?
Auntie Song, at the counter, was also secretly smiling. “Little Wang, this handsome young man has such a sweet mouth. Auntie likes it. You have to let me treat you today.”
Wang Xinghe tried to hold back his laughter. “Auntie Song, every time I come, you find some way to give us a free meal. You don’t have to come up with such a clumsy excuse.”
“It’s just a couple of bucks. Don’t argue with your auntie, or I’ll get angry. Oh, my heart is getting weak~” Auntie Song started her old trick.
Wang Xinghe threw up his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay, Auntie Song’s treat.”
Lu Jingze watched their kind and intimate interaction.
He felt a bit dazed. Am I really dead?
Is this really heaven?
Or is this the fantasy of the little match girl before she froze to death?
