Can't Possibly Fall for My Wife Again After Rebirth, Right? - Chapter 50
As Xu Yingran was desperately calling Fu Qiao, the latter had just stepped off a bus.
Fu Qiao glanced at the phone, which had been ringing incessantly since a while ago. After a moment’s thought, she decided to switch it off.
Today was not only the day her parents were moving but also the day of her interview at the new school.
Her broadcasting class had ended around 11:00 AM, and Fu Qiao had taken the bus, swaying along until she reached the red-brick and green-tiled campus of her new school.
This provincial key high school boasted a powerful faculty; almost all the city’s top scorers in the college entrance exams came from here, and some students were even renowned at the provincial or national levels.
Fu Qiao had initially felt that the learning conditions here were superior to her old school. She had visited a few times in secret, hiding it from both her family and Xu Yingran because she wasn’t certain yet if she wanted to transfer.
But now, she had no more reservations.
Fu Qiao adjusted her mindset before stepping into the campus.
The teacher assigned by the school had contacted Fu Qiao several times. This time, she took Fu Qiao to the cafeteria for a staff meal before heading to the Academic Affairs Office.
Fu Qiao didn’t know what the transfer process was like for others, but the teacher in charge was very enthusiastic. Along the way, she introduced the learning environment and the teaching staff, showing no negligence toward Fu Qiao despite her being a senior.
“These are my previous exam results,” Fu Qiao said, placing her organized materials on the coffee table. She added somewhat nervously, “Teacher, is there anything else you need?”
The teacher in charge had a very kind face and appeared to be quite young.
She said to Fu Qiao, “We have already reviewed your grades. You are very excellent, and our school is very keen to enroll students like you.”
Then, the young teacher asked curiously, “Student Fu Qiao, where are your parents? Why did you come alone?”
“They are quite busy moving today. They won’t be able to come until they finish, probably around two or three o’clock.”
“Oh, that’s fine. Your student file has already been transferred. You can start classes next Monday. As for the rest, I can discuss it with your parents.”
“Alright, Teacher.”
Afterward, the young teacher took Fu Qiao on a tour of the campus and introduced her to the teacher who would become her class advisor.
The school provided dormitories, but since Fu Qiao’s home was nearby, she didn’t need to live on campus.
Even though it was Saturday, Fu Qiao saw many students in the classrooms engaged in self-study. There were quite a few people, yet not a single soul spoke.
The future class advisor said to Fu Qiao, “Our classrooms are never closed on weekends. Many boarding students come here for self-study. It’s entirely voluntary; they prefer studying to going out to play.”
Although Fu Qiao found it a bit strange, she nodded without saying a word.
After touring the school, Fu Qiao felt a bit odd. The school and buildings were very square and rigid. Because it was a new campus, there were very few trees. Unlike her old school with its shaded paths, this place was almost entirely buildings and the athletic field—nothing else.
It was so clean it almost felt like a cage.
Once Hu Mei arrived at the school in the afternoon, the teacher went over a few more details before letting them leave.
Walking along the unfamiliar streets, Hu Mei continued talking to Fu Qiao.
“In the future, if you just walk straight down this street, you’ll reach the south gate of the community. Right across from the south gate is our shop. It’s still being renovated, but it should be finished in about two months.” Hu Mei’s face was beaming with joy as she spoke about their own shop. Although their lives had been decent before, moving to a new home was ultimately a happy occasion.
Fu Qiao listened, calculating the distance from the school to their home. It was one street closer than the old school; she could be home in just a ten-minute walk after school.
She wondered what kind of expression Xu Yingran would have now that she had transferred schools so quietly.
“Oh, Qiaoqiao,” Hu Mei suddenly said to her daughter, “Didn’t you tell Ranran about the transfer and the move? I saw her looking for you everywhere like she’d gone mad; her eyes were all red.”
“Is that so?” Fu Qiao said calmly. “I just hadn’t decided how to tell her.”
Hu Mei sighed and said, “I think Ranran is truly loath to let you go. We’ve been neighbors for nearly twenty years, and you two have always had a good relationship. You should go back and see her in a little while.”
Fu Qiao nodded and asked, “Does Xu Yingran know our new address?”
“She does,” Hu Mei said, puzzled. “Why? You didn’t want her to know?”
“No, I was just asking. If you hadn’t told her, I would have gone to tell her myself later.”
“Well, I’ll give you some more money later. Why don’t you treat Ranran to dinner tonight? Even if you’ve transferred schools, you’re still friends.”
“Alright.”
In the East District, a bus arrived every three minutes. Fu Qiao sat on a bench at the bus stop and turned on her phone. She saw over thirty missed calls from Xu Yingran.
She lightly swiped them away and checked her other messages.
In fact, besides Xu Yingran, no one else had sent her any messages.
Fu Qiao hadn’t told anyone about the move or the transfer. Currently, besides Xu Yingran, probably no one else knew.
As she thought about this, the bus she was waiting for arrived.
It wasn’t very crowded on a Saturday afternoon. Fu Qiao found a seat by the window.
Perhaps because Xu Yingran had called so much earlier, she hadn’t called once in the ten minutes since Fu Qiao turned her phone back on.
It was just as well she didn’t. If she had, Fu Qiao wouldn’t have known how to answer.
The bus carried its passengers, swaying along its route. The scenery gradually shifted from unfamiliar roads to ones that were intimate. Fu Qiao knew that from now on, she would likely rarely return here.
She got off the bus and walked toward the old street. By 5:00 PM, she could already smell the small wontons from the shop at the end of the street.
Those thin-skinned, large-filled wontons in rich broth were very popular in the summer, and business would be even better in the winter.
Next door was a shop selling scallion pancakes. Both families had been open for over ten years. Everyone in the neighborhood loved soaking the pancakes in the wonton soup; the flavor was exceptionally fresh.
Just as Fu Qiao was considering whether to buy two scallion pancakes to take back, a hand reached out from an alley and pulled her right in.
“Ah!”
Fu Qiao cried out in surprise as she was pressed against the wall. Upon seeing who it was, she frowned and said, “Xu Yingran, have you lost your mind?”
This wall was so dirty! And Fu Qiao was wearing new clothes today!
Xu Yingran looked at her with red eyes. In fact, she had been waiting for Fu Qiao here for a long time. Hu Mei had told her before leaving that she would have Fu Qiao come back. Knowing Fu Qiao didn’t have a car and would have to come from the east, she could only get off at the bus stop near the old street. Xu Yingran had been keeping watch here for two hours.
“Why are you transferring?” Xu Yingran stared at Fu Qiao, grabbing her hand as she asked, “We’re already seniors; why on earth are you transferring?”
Fu Qiao looked at her calmly and said slowly, “That school is a provincial key high school.”
“So what?” Xu Yingran said. “Our current school isn’t bad either.”
“It isn’t bad,” Fu Qiao said. “But their school produced a provincial top scorer last year. Our school hasn’t even had a city top scorer. Is there something wrong with me going to school there?”
The teaching staff there was superior. Although she was a transfer student, Fu Qiao believed she could keep up with their pace. Had it not been for her excellent grades, the school might not even have been willing to let her transfer.
Even if Fu Qiao didn’t say these things, Xu Yingran understood them.
So Fu Qiao said to her, “Shouldn’t you be happy for me?”
Wishing her a top spot on the honors roll, wishing her a future as bright as blossoms.
Xu Yingran looked at the person in front of her, her lips trembling slightly, but she couldn’t utter a single word.
“Fu Qiao…”
Finally, Xu Yingran said tremulously, “I’m sorry. I was wrong.”
Fu Qiao looked at her, puzzled. “What were you wrong about?”
Xu Yingran answered instinctively, “I was wrong about everything.”
“It must be my fault that you have things on your mind and didn’t tell me. I promise I won’t make you angry again. Whatever you say goes.” Xu Yingran gripped Fu Qiao’s hand tightly and said, “From now on, I will definitely be home by 9:00 PM and in bed by 11:00 PM. No smoking, no drinking. And if I have to work overtime, I’ll definitely call you.”
The words came out so naturally that she said “work overtime” without even thinking.
Fu Qiao listened and looked at her in confusion. “What does any of this have to do with me? Shouldn’t these be the concerns of someone you like?”
Don’t talk as if we’re already married.
However, Xu Yingran said firmly, “How can it have nothing to do with you? You are the one I like.”
Fu Qiao was stunned.
Thinking that she had already said it anyway, Xu Yingran leaned in a bit closer and said, “Fu Qiao, I do like you.”
Even if there wasn’t a world-shaking romance, and even if Fu Qiao wasn’t a “hot” beauty, Xu Yingran simply liked her.
She still remembered when they both lost their baby teeth—how they both lacked two front teeth when they smiled.
She also remembered how, in middle school, they would meet before dawn to go for an 800-meter run to prepare for the physical education exam.
She remembered how Fu Qiao had been so worried she cried because Xu Yingran’s grades were so poor she almost didn’t get into their current high school.
Each of these events was very ordinary, like the exams that arrived every so often, like the spring breeze and summer rain, like the sunrise and sunset.
They were so mundane they had almost merged into her very flesh and blood, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t love.
Xu Yingran looked down deeply at Fu Qiao and said to her, “Truly, I love you.”
Perhaps because Xu Yingran’s confession came so abruptly, Fu Qiao didn’t react for a moment; she was completely dazed.
What kind of trick is this now?
Before, Xu Yingran had mistakenly thought Fu Qiao had confessed to her and said a lot of nonsense, ultimately making them both unhappy. Now that Fu Qiao had sorted out her own thoughts, why was Xu Yingran saying this?
She liked her? But didn’t she like “hot” beauties?
Fu Qiao instinctively frowned, twisting the wrist being held by the other girl as she tried to pull away. She said to Xu Yingran, “Didn’t you say you like beautiful women with good figures? Why are you telling me this now?”
Xu Yingran panicked. “I do like good figures… No! I don’t like beautiful women with good figures. You misunderstood!”
“How could I misunderstand? You said those words yourself!”
“Even if I said them myself, I still love you!”
Fu Qiao was so angry she laughed. “Xu Yingran, do you even know what you’re saying?”
Xu Yingran looked at her deeply, then lowered her head and cupped Fu Qiao’s face. “I know…”
Before Fu Qiao could reply, Xu Yingran lowered her head and captured her lips.
Xu: Kiss kiss kiss! Wife, I was wrong! Kiss kiss kiss!
