- Chapter 12 - The School Hunk and the Gloomy Boy
Inside a budget fast-food restaurant, office workers bustled in and out to pick up meals, and the small dining area was packed.
Yu Yan and Wang Shan sat opposite each other in the farthest corner. At the next table, a mother sat with her two small children; the sound of their occasional playful shouting drifted over.
Wang Shan pulled a tissue from the dispenser on the table, blew her nose, and got straight to the point. Her first sentence left Yu Yan utterly shocked.
“I know you’re a creep. That fact isn’t going to change just because you saved me.”
Yu Yan blinked. “?”
Looking at Yu Yan’s innocent, confused face, Wang Shan almost felt fooled, provided she didn’t already have concrete evidence. Thinking of this, she pulled a crumpled slip of paper from her pocket and handed it to Yu Yan. He took it, looking puzzled, but his expression shifted instantly when he saw the familiar handwriting.
He was absolutely certain it was his own handwriting, but the content on the paper was completely at odds with his actual feelings. On the pale yellow lined notepad paper, written clearly in black ink, were the words: It would be better if Xu Yansheng just died. Only death can make us equals.
Yu Yan’s confusion was written all over his face. Wang Shan looked at him with hesitation. “Don’t tell me you forgot this was in your notebook?”
Yu Yan blurted out, “What?”
Wang Shan sighed helplessly. “The notebook that ‘Slanted Bangs’ stole from you back then.”
Yu Yan remembered now. Wasn’t that the same notebook where he had written the love letter to Xie Jin? Just by looking at his expression, Wang Shan knew exactly what he was thinking. She grumbled irritably, “That’s why I called you a creep.”
If you love him, you want him dead? If that’s not being a creep, what is?
Once the words were out, Wang Shan’s emotions seemed to find an outlet, pouring out all at once.
“I originally thought that if I made a scene about your love letter, Xu Yansheng would be on his guard against you. I never expected him to take the initiative to become your seatmate or let you bring him breakfast every day. God knows how scared I was when I heard the news; I thought you were going to poison him.”
At this point, Wang Shan’s expression turned complex and her tone became incredibly bitter, as if she had just downed two bottles of aged vinegar. “What’s scarier is that despite my repeated warnings to Xu Yansheng, he actually started getting even closer to you.”
Yu Yan smiled, looking a bit smug and pampered. “You’re just a crazy pursuer. Why should Xu Yansheng believe you?”
Wang Shan rolled her eyes at the triumphant teenager. After taking a sip of the free lemon water, she said calmly, “I don’t like Xu Yansheng.”
Yu Yan paused. “?”
Seeing that Yu Yan didn’t believe her, Wang Shan repeated firmly, “I don’t like Xu Yansheng. It’s just that his family background is superior enough. I wanted to use the ‘pursuit’ as an excuse to provoke him, just so my father would suffer the consequences. Furthermore,” Wang Shan’s voice gradually dropped to a murmur, “The person I loved died a long time ago.”
The girl, who usually presented herself with such pride, felt her eyes grow moist as she recalled her former lover. Through Wang Shan’s nostalgic retelling, Yu Yan learned about a past she had long kept buried.
In middle school, she had fallen for a boy from a poor family. Her father had pressured the boy so relentlessly that he committed suicide. She wanted revenge; it was as simple as that.
The facts had unfolded just as she hoped. Her father was successfully demoted to a regular high school in a neighboring city, and she would be transferring there with him.
Yu Yan couldn’t understand Wang Shan’s “mutually assured destruction” approach, but Wang Shan didn’t need his understanding. She wiped her tears and pulled a black recording pen from her pocket, sliding it across the smooth tabletop toward him.
“I prepared this recording pen last night to reveal your true face to Xu Yansheng. Now, it only contains the recording of you saving me from Gao Da. You can take it and give it to him.”
Yu Yan didn’t take it. He tossed the crumpled slip of paper into a nearby trash can and asked curiously, “Why would I let Xu Yansheng listen to something like this?”
Wang Shan started, “Because naturally”
She trailed off, and Yu Yan finished the sentence for her. “Naturally, it’s because you’ve been secretly badmouthing me to Xu Yansheng, right?”
Seeing the embarrassed look on Wang Shan’s face, Yu Yan pushed the recording pen back toward her and said easily, “There is no need. Xu Yansheng and I are doing great now, and we’ll be even better in the future. I’ll use actual proof to show that everything you believed before was nonsense.”
Just as he finished speaking, a violent coughing fit erupted from the next table. The two of them looked toward the sound, only then noticing that the seat where the mother and children had been was now occupied by a man wearing a white mask.
Seeing both of them staring at him, the man immediately apologized profusely in embarrassment.
Wang Shan looked away, tucked the recording pen into her pocket, and said solemnly to Yu Yan, “Thank you very much for your help last night. I’ll handle the rest of the matters myself. And as for the things in the past, I am sorry.”
The girl lowered her usually high-held head. Yu Yan wasn’t quite sure how to feel. He glanced at the wall clock; it was 8:15 AM, just as the first period for high schoolers was beginning. He threw his backpack over his shoulder. “If that’s everything, I’m leaving.”
As Yu Yan stood up, Wang Shan said sincerely to his profile as he turned, “I wish you and Xu Yansheng happiness.”
Yu Yan waved a hand and walked out the door without looking back, stepping into the bright, beautiful sunshine. Watching the boy’s retreating back, Wang Shan suddenly felt a sense of relief. She pulled out her vibrating phone and said coldly to the anxious Wang Ning on the other end, “Letting you finish your college entrance exams here is my final mercy to you.”
She cut the call immediately without giving the other person a chance to plead. Wiping away the tears at the corners of her eyes, Wang Shan forced an encouraging smile; the dimples at the corners of her mouth were as sweet as ever.
In her conversation with Yu Yan just now, she had hidden a few things. For instance, the boy she liked was also liked by the sister she grew up with, who had actually liked him even earlier than she did. Or the fact that Wang Ning hated her, which is why Wang Ning had hidden the note warning her about Gao Da’s danger and had even practically delivered her into Gao Da’s hands last night.
There were too many sad things in this city, but fortunately, before leaving, something good had happened.
Yu Yan could more or less guess what Wang Shan was hiding, but what did that have to do with him? Even though he had enjoyed helping someone, it didn’t mean he had stopped disliking Wang Shan. Now that the person who made him uncomfortable was gone, his relationship with Xu Yansheng was bound to reach a new level.
Full of hope for the future, Yu Yan returned to school with high spirits. When he reached the classroom, it was the middle of the first period. The classroom, which should have been disciplined, was in chaos. Even Xu Yansheng, who rarely moved around, was currently moving a desk.
Yu Yan was shocked. He immediately blocked Xu Yansheng’s path, looking piteous with a sorrowful gaze. “Do you not want me anymore?”
Before Xu Yansheng could answer, the homeroom teacher’s affected voice came from behind him. “How could he not want you? Even with the seat change, he insisted on being next to you.”
Looking at the Human Anatomy Atlas that had slid out of the desk drawer due to Xu Yansheng’s movements, Yu Yan blinked. It seemed that was indeed his own desk. Under Xu Yansheng’s teasing gaze, Yu Yan, his face not red but his ears burning, picked up the book and followed Xu Yansheng to the new seats like a bashful new bride.
The new seats were in the third to last row, by the window near the hallway. Yu Yan was very dissatisfied with this spot because he could see everyone passing by in the hallway as soon as he looked up.
The homeroom teacher, however, was very satisfied. She scolded Yu Yan, who was hanging his head, “I’ve heard from other teachers that your state has been very lax lately. This position is perfect for me to keep an eye on you.”
Yu Yan: “Thanks, but that is really not necessary.”
