- Chapter 10 - Repaying a Life-Saving Favor with Sincerity
“Be careful yourself, stay hidden and don’t attract the wolves!”
Mi Yue nodded and gestured for Wu Er to return to the tent. The tent was of high quality, providing insulation against the wind and cold while also masking their scent to some extent.
As long as the scent didn’t escape, they wouldn’t draw the wolves’ attention.
Mi Yue zipped up the tent, leaving only a small gap, enough to observe the situation outside while ensuring her own safety.
Outside, the Tiger Tribe’s chief had dispatched a group of males to protect the females of the tribe while the remaining warriors engaged the enemy.
Soon, the Tiger Tribe males were locked in fierce combat with the wolves. Though they were brave, they were outnumbered by the wolf pack.
One-on-one, they might have held their own, but facing two or even three wolves at once was dangerous.
Before long, the Tiger Tribe males were all wounded.
Mi Yue anxiously searched for Xiu Ka’s figure, but the males had all shifted into their beast forms, tigers that looked so similar she couldn’t tell them apart.
“That tiger is Xiu Ka.”
Wu Er, noticing her searching gaze, guessed her intention and pointed to a tiger guarding near the tent.
The tiger was surrounded by three wolves, one in front, one behind, and another on the left, poised to strike.
[Host, your feeding target is in imminent danger! Immediate rescue required!!!] The system’s sharp alert rang out again.
Mi Yue was puzzled. Though Xiu Ka was fighting three wolves at once, he still seemed to have the upper hand. Why was the situation so urgent that she needed to intervene?
“Not good, it’s the Wolf King!” Wu Er exclaimed, transforming into a tiger with dull fur, bursting out of the tent in the process.
Mi Yue looked over and locked eyes with a pair of eerie green orbs. It was a wolf with a head as large as a basin, its body twice the size of the others, even comparable to Xiu Ka’s tiger form.
In that split second, Mi Yue made her choice. Gritting her teeth, she sprinted toward Xiu Ka.
Xiu Ka was locked in combat with the three wolves and didn’t notice the approaching Wolf King.
Wu Er rushed forward to take on one of the wolves, but at that moment, the Wolf King lunged at Xiu Ka.
Its razor-sharp fangs aimed for the back of Xiu Ka’s neck. Xiu Ka thrashed wildly, but it was no use.
The other two wolves attacked his front and hind legs, knocking him to the ground.
The Wolf King swiftly pinned him down, drool dripping from its jaws onto Xiu Ka’s fur as its deadly teeth descended.
Then…
Thud!
The sound of a blade piercing flesh.
Mi Yue had somehow climbed onto the Wolf King’s back and plunged a tiger-tooth survival knife into its neck.
The blade was 19 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide, forged from the hardest steel, strong enough to chop down trees.
The severed artery gushed blood, and the Wolf King quickly lost its strength.
Warm blood splattered onto Mi Yue’s pure white T-shirt and Xiu Ka’s face.
With the Wolf King neutralized, Mi Yue swiftly stashed the knife back into her system space.
The two wolves besieging Xiu Ka, seeing their king slain, immediately tucked their tails and fled.
Xiu Ka wasted no time. He rose and killed the wolf fighting Wu Er before shifting back into human form.
Mi Yue stood frozen in place, her hands covered in blood, trembling uncontrollably as she stared at the lifeless body of the wolf king on the ground.
This was the first time she had experienced something so thrilling and dangerous. She had even killed the wolf king with her own hands. After the initial shock, fear began to creep in.
A large hand gently covered her crimson-stained palm. “Don’t be afraid. It’s dead now.”
Mi Yue looked up and met a pair of star-like eyes filled with concern, shining brightly in the darkness.
Xiu Ka could tell from the misty tears welling in her glistening eyes that she was genuinely frightened.
This timid girl, who usually couldn’t even start a fire, had mustered the courage to save him from the jaws of the wolf. The thought warmed his heart.
His voice softened further. “You saved me. You were amazing.”
Mi Yue’s eyes flickered as she gazed at the dead wolf.
(But I killed it…)
She had been taught since childhood to protect animals, yet now she had…
Xiu Ka instantly understood the source of her distress.
“It was trying to harm us. You did nothing wrong. If you hadn’t killed it, I would have been torn apart.”
“Don’t you agree?”
Mi Yue nodded blankly.
Her pitiful yet adorable expression made it impossible not to feel protective of her.
A shadow flickered in Xiu Ka’s eyes as he suppressed the urge to pull her into his arms.
“I need to go help over there. Stay hidden with the elder and wait for me to return.”
Mi Yue nodded again.
With the wolf king dead, the remaining wolves were no longer a threat, either slain by the sharp claws and fangs of the Tiger Tribe’s males or fleeing with their tails between their legs.
The crisis of the wolf pack’s night raid had been resolved!
[Received 10 merit points from the Tiger Tribe members. Current merit points: 35.]
[Received 10 gratitude points from Tiger Tribe male Xiu Ka. Current gratitude points: 10.]
[Received 20 merit points from Tiger Tribe male Xiu Ka. Current merit points: 55.]
The system’s notifications snapped Mi Yue out of her daze.
The 55 merit points brought a glimmer of joy to her frightened heart. Just 45 more, and she could exchange them for a year of life.
Hope was within reach!
The wolves’ failed ambush had instead turned them into food.
Though the Tiger Tribe males bore injuries, their spirits were high.
The Tiger Tribe chief decided to distribute the wolf meat equally among all the males in recognition of their bravery in battle.
Xiu Ka returned still in his tiger form, picking up the discarded animal hide before gradually shifting back into human form.
He moved swiftly, but Mi Yue still caught a glimpse of something she shouldn’t have seen.
Her cheeks flushed as she lowered her head.
Unaware of her thoughts, Xiu Ka simply assumed there was nothing unusual, after all, they were all males here.
“How’s the situation over there?” Wu Er asked.
“Two males dead, twelve severely injured, and three young females wounded. The tribe chief decided to give one wolf to each household, with an extra one for families with young females.”
Wu Er frowned. “But you killed two yourself.”
“If it weren’t for Shaman Yue slaying the wolf king and breaking the wolves’ morale, the battle wouldn’t have ended so easily.”
Listening nearby, Mi Yue nodded in agreement.
The Tiger Tribe chief’s distribution clearly favored families with young females.
She had seen it clearly, none of the males had come to Xiu Ka’s aid. Those wolves had been killed by his own strength.
(That bald chief is so biased.)
Hearing Mi Yue’s mental remark about the chief being bald, Xiu Ka couldn’t help but smirk.
“Let it be. I don’t want to argue with them.” He had grown accustomed to such unfair treatment.
Neither he nor his grandfather were native to the Tiger Tribe, and the tribe chief had always treated them as outsiders.
(Fine. As long as I’m here, you won’t go hungry anyway. Wolf meat isn’t anything special.)
After the battle with the wolf pack, Mi Yue clearly noticed that Xiu Ka had grown much closer to her, even going so far as to suggest they share meals together.
Mi Yue had been searching for an excuse to feed him and boost his gratitude points, so she agreed immediately. The Tiger Tribe members also tacitly acknowledged their close relationship.
A few tried to curry favor with Mi Yue, but her cold demeanor quickly drove them away.
