- Chapter 5 - The Monster’s Wife (Part 5)
Outside the window, Gu Yue held his pistol and paced the garden carefully several times, but he found nothing unusual. The blooming Black Baccara roses swayed gently in the garden.
Gu Yue thought seriously for a moment. This was not his home; even if the flowers in this garden were problematic, it was not his place to handle it. At the very least, he should inform the owner of the garden. Besides, he now felt he had regained his clarity. The feeling of his thoughts being uncontrolled and foggy had completely vanished. Gu Yue was not even sure if he had been influenced by anything at all.
He stood in the garden. A cool breeze brushed his face. He suddenly realized he had jumped out of a window, specifically the bedroom window of someone else’s house. How could he explain this to the owner? Should he climb back in and find a chance to tell Bai Yu about his suspicions, or just leave?
Fortunately, he did not need to deliberate long because he saw someone walking toward him from another entrance. The man was ugly, had only one eye, and his face was covered in a complex web of crisscrossing scars. He wore dark work coveralls and carried a toolbox filled with gardening supplies. Gu Yue knew that entrance led to the backyard. He had not expected Shen Yuhuai’s home to have other servants besides the woman who carried a gun and knew combat.
It makes sense, he thought. A garden this large requires someone skilled in horticulture, especially since Shen Yuhuai’s little husband looks so delicate and incapable. With the husband away on a mission, the husband had barely left before people with ulterior motives started circling. Moreover, despite living in the same complex and being of a lower rank than General Shen, the man did not know how to refuse advances. In the end, Gu Yue himself had to step in.
Gu Yue despised people like Bai Yu, who had hands and feet but acted as if they could do nothing. It had nothing to do with gender; it was about the education he had received. His parents had taught him that if you want something, you have to fight for it yourself. He preferred people like Jiang Sui. Thinking of Jiang Sui, Gu Yue’s expression softened.
He then looked toward the ugly gardener. He planned to say there had been a misunderstanding, that he had jumped out of the bedroom window due to special circumstances, and that he was very sorry. He would say that Bai Yu could find him next door for any damages. Even though he had not caused any damage, he was too embarrassed by his own recklessness to think of a better excuse. He felt too ashamed to face Bai Yu’s beautiful face. Regardless, he had been the one to agree to have tea. Gu Yue felt a surge of shame, followed by the feeling that he had betrayed Jiang Sui, whom he had loved for a long time.
Just as he was about to speak, the gardener said, “Are you leaving, Mr. Gu?”
The gardener’s voice was hoarse and unpleasant. Gu Yue paused, and the gardener continued, “My mistress is feeling unwell and has returned to his room to rest. He asked me to tell you he is sorry he could not host you properly. He said if there is another chance, he will have the master visit you in person to thank you.”
Gu Yue had not expected the gardener to mention Shen Yuhuai. A trace of guilt flashed in his heart, and he nodded. “In that case, I will take my leave.” He left the villa wearing his uniform, which was still stained with black tea.
Inside the house, Bai Xinjian was holding Gu Yue’s arm, leading him to the table where they had been having tea.
“By the way, Captain Gu,” Bai Xinjian suddenly remembered, “before my housekeeper left, she said she left some pudding in the fridge. I almost forgot; I will go get it. Please, sit for a moment.”
He took a thin blanket from the sofa, draped it over his shoulders, and went to the kitchen. Moments later, he returned with two cups of pudding adorned with strawberries. He set the tray on the table.
“One for you, one for me,” Bai Xinjian smiled. As he spoke, his light colored lips moved, causing Gu Yue to stare at them and the plump curve of his upper lip for a long moment. So, this is how he seduces other men when he is home alone? Shen Yuhuai had previously guessed that his young husband’s beauty might attract trouble, but he had never expected his husband to be so unfaithful. Shen Yuhuai’s expression darkened, his hands clenched, and the storm in his dark right eye intensified like a churning sea.
“Oh?” Bai Xinjian suddenly seemed to notice something and leaned closer to Gu Yue. The man was caught off guard, and they were nearly face to face. “Captain Gu, I just noticed your right eye is dark blue? But I remember your eyes being deep brown?”
Bai Xinjian looked at his left eye. “This one is definitely brown. Captain Gu, are you heterochromatic?”
Gu Yue’s right eye began to emit a bewitching glow. Bai Xinjian felt the temperature in the room plummet again. He wrapped the blanket tighter around himself. His short hair brushed against the edge of the blanket, causing it to flip up. A puff of white mist escaped Bai Xinjian’s parted lips. He looked like a small animal peeking out of its burrow.
In reality, Bai Xinjian was not afraid. To be precise, he did not know what fear was. He could see that the monster was angry, and he was surprised that the monster could actually feel anger. Bai Xinjian wore an expression of curiosity, playing the part of someone completely unaware of the danger he was facing.
“May I touch your right eye?” Bai Xinjian suddenly asked. “I think it is so beautiful, like a cosmic nebula or an unspeakable abyss at the bottom of the sea. Why do you have such a pretty eye?”
Bai Xinjian seemed truly captivated by that eye. He reached out and lightly stroked the monster’s cheek. The monster froze. A very strange memory suddenly flickered in its chaotic mind, something from the time of its birth. It had been too long, and the memory was blurry. Instinctively, it felt a sense of closeness to Bai Xinjian.
At that moment, Gu Yue felt the human part of his consciousness fading, while the monster part awakened violently. Uncontrollably, he pressed his face into Bai Xinjian’s palm.
Purr. Purr.
A deep, instinctive purr rumbled in his throat. The monster felt its pores relax, its entire body screaming: He likes me! He thinks my eyes are pretty! Let him touch! Let him touch! The monster shouted in its heart: Give him the eyes! Give him everything he likes! What should I do? Should I cut myself into pieces? Where is the knife? Take the knife! Cut! Cut into pieces! Put them in a gift box, tie them with a ribbon, make a butterfly knot! Send it to him! Everything, give him everything!
“Why is the system not here yet?” Bai Xinjian whispered to himself. “Can I input the censorship words into the monster’s mind now?”
Acting for so long is exhausting, Bai Xinjian thought. I am so tired.
