- Chapter 4 - The Monster’s Wife (Part 4)
Gu Yue served in the military and naturally had access to far more information about pollutants than the average citizen. He knew these pollutants not only infected humans but also animals and plants. The military research teams were even claiming that God might be initiating an era of survival of the fittest. Gu Yue, however, did not believe in such things. He preferred to believe that humanity could conquer nature.
He drew his pistol from his waist. It had been his most trusted companion on the battlefield since he joined the military. To avoid alerting Bai Xinjian, he chose to return to the bedroom from the bathroom, then leaped out through the bedroom window into the garden.
Hiss.
Gu Yue heard a low, hoarse, and impatient growl coming from somewhere nearby. Sure enough, this garden or perhaps this entire house was problematic. Gu Yue raised his gun, scanned his surroundings vigilantly, and step by step, approached the Black Baccara roses in the garden.
In the living room, Bai Xinjian was listlessly stirring the milk tea in his cup. More than ten minutes had passed since Gu Yue entered the bedroom to change his clothes. Does he intend to put on makeup in there? Bai Xinjian wondered, resting his chin on his hand. Suddenly, he felt the temperature in the room drop by several degrees.
“Do you feel that?” Bai Xinjian rubbed his arms, looking around, and muttered to himself, “It suddenly feels cold.”
“Cold?” 0048 replied. “Could it be the weather cooling down?”
Bai Xinjian realized that since 0048 was bound to his mind, it could not perceive changes in the real world environment. Interesting. He had thought this transmigrator system was omniscient within the story world. It turned out its permissions were restricted.
Information asymmetry was the key to maintaining the upper hand. Since entering the world, Bai Xinjian had been playing along with 0048 while searching for flaws in this so called system. He was a compliant worker, but that did not mean he was a fool. It was not in Bai Xinjian’s nature to let others hold all the power.
After all, emotional detachment was often colloquially known as sociopathy in society. Whether Bai Xinjian could actually feel emotions or not, his drive for destruction and control was innate. 0048 did not yet know that its host could be a character harboring immense danger.
Bai Xinjian smiled. He stood up, ignored the plummeting temperature around him, and walked to the door of the bedroom he shared with Shen Yuhuai. He knocked lightly. “Captain Gu, are you done changing?” He intentionally adjusted his tone to sound pitiful. “If you do not come out soon, the tea will get cold.”
Click. The bedroom door opened. Bai Xinjian looked up to see Gu Yue standing there in a neat suit.
It was Shen Yuhuai’s suit. Shen Yuhuai’s wardrobe consisted almost entirely of meticulously ironed military uniforms. The few dress shirts he owned were all too large for Gu Yue, but this suit fit perfectly. 0048 had retrieved the data: this suit had been tailored two years ago for Bai Yu and Shen Yuhuai’s engagement. Naturally, the original host’s wardrobe contained a matching set. It was unexpected that after two years, Shen Yuhuai’s physique had outgrown the suit.
Military service had clearly been an intense workout. Compared to this suit, Shen Yuhuai’s current attire showed he had gained significant muscle mass, far more than Gu Yue’s current build. But Bai Xinjian scrutinized the man in front of him. Is this suit slightly tight on him? That should not be. When he pulled it out of the closet earlier, he had held it up against Gu Yue, and it had been a perfect fit. Why was it suddenly ill fitting?
Bai Xinjian felt confused, but it was trivial. He remembered his mission. “Captain Gu,” Bai Xinjian lowered his head and whispered, “would you be willing to stay for dinner? I have asked the housekeeper to buy groceries, and she will be back soon.”
The expression on Gu Yue’s face froze for a moment, then he looked up at the sky. It was getting late. He let out an ambiguous, low grunt. This little husband has no sense of propriety. With his husband away, he dares to seduce other men in his home.
But he, why was he here? Gu Yue suddenly felt a headache coming on and reached up to support his temple. His face began to shift uncontrollably, flickering between Gu Yue’s features and those of another man.
“System,” Bai Xinjian asked, feigning surprise, “is this not Gu Yue?”
0048 began scanning the information: “Bad news, host! This is not Gu Yue; it is an infected individual, Danger Level V. He is very likely the high risk species lurking in this world, Shen Yuhuai! Handle him with caution; he is not easy to deal with. Because of the pollutant infection, his personality has drastically changed; he is no longer the original Shen Yuhuai.”
Bai Xinjian did not know what the original Shen Yuhuai was like, nor did he understand fear. In the face of danger, he became eager. “Do I need to provoke him now? What should I do?” Bai Xinjian asked, eager for chaos. “Where did Gu Yue go? Or should I just treat him like the real Gu Yue? Seduce him, feed his memory with blocked keywords, and irritate him to death!”
Bai Xinjian did not know if this would anger Shen Yuhuai, but he had read enough news, novels, and gossip to know that a wife’s infidelity was a huge blow to a man’s ego, definitely enough to make a man furious. Although Bai Xinjian did not understand why men were so obsessed with invisible, untouchable things like face.
“No!” 0048 refused sternly. “The plot has not progressed that far. Shen Yuhuai must have appeared suddenly; this is not in the script. You cannot act rashly. You must follow the story’s progress bar. I need to investigate what is happening.”
“Go offline for a while and handle it yourself,” 0048 emphasized. “Keep this imposter Shen Yuhuai steady. Do not let him go into a frenzy now.”
“Fine,” Bai Xinjian dismissed it in his mind. Go ahead, go ahead. As a laborer, he knew a fundamental truth: when the boss and the manager are away, the monkey can rule the mountain. Since no one was going to report him, he could do whatever he wanted. The malicious cells within Bai Xinjian were restless. However, he did not yet know the price of such recklessness, so he decided to be cautious.
He lowered his head, his brows slightly furrowed, and reached out to gently grasp Gu Yue’s arm.
Gu Yue looked down at the slender wrist resting on his arm.
“Captain Gu,” Bai Xinjian said softly, “do you feel the room is a bit cold?”
Bai Xinjian was telling the truth. Since this Shen Yuhuai wearing Gu Yue’s skin appeared, the temperature in the room had dropped, as if frost were about to form. Thankfully, Su Qin had been sent out to shop for groceries and household supplies; otherwise, no one could have stayed in this house. Of course, that excluded Bai Xinjian and this Gu Yue, who might no longer be considered human.
The sharp brow of Gu Yue arched slightly. He had forgotten why he came here. He only remembered being in the hospital a second ago, in the Alliance’s most secret ward. Why was I in the hospital? Am I sick? Gu Yue could not recall.
No, I am not Gu Yue. He looked down at the man clutching his wrist. He knew this person was Bai Yu, his political marriage partner from two years ago, his little husband kept at home. Shen Yuhuai had never been interested in this boy who only knew how to be lazy and had to rely on family connections to pass flower arranging exams. But he needed this marriage; without it, he would not have been promoted so quickly in the military over the past two years. They had maintained a plastic marriage, affectionate in public and estranged in private. Shen Yuhuai was ambitious; his life did not need to be bound by emotions, and marriage was just a tool to be used for his political career. That was what he thought.
But then, he saw Bai Xinjian nestled against him, his eyelashes fluttering like butterfly wings due to his extreme fear. He felt the man pressing tightly against him, his warm body heat transmitting through his clothing, and a faint, sweet fragrance like daisies in a forest after rain drifting from him.
Shen Yuhuai suddenly felt that marriage might not be as dull as he had previously imagined. Why had I not noticed before that my little husband is so fragile, like a frightened little rabbit? He must need me, he thought. Especially in these uncertain times when everyone is looking out for themselves.
Immediately, a trace of regret arose in Shen Yuhuai’s heart, followed by fury. He was furious that in his absence, that Captain from the Amber War Zone next door had entered his home so shamelessly to have tea with his little husband.
Shen Yuhuai was enraged. He was furious beyond measure. In a place Bai Xinjian did not notice, Shen Yuhuai’s face began to change; the deep brown pupils that should have belonged to Gu Yue gradually transformed into a deep, swirling dark blue.
