- Chapter 61 - Everything Is Only in Whispers
Ying Miaomiao had already sensed her return home, but the moment she truly saw Mrs. Ying, her nose involuntarily stung.
She was back.
Before the car accident, she hadn’t properly answered Shi Xinyu’s question, nor had she asked the question she wanted to ask.
But Ying Miaomiao now knew how to answer Shi Xinyu’s question, and she also knew exactly what Shi Xinyu had wanted to ask.
She sat up from the bed and asked, “Mom, what happened to Shi Xinyu?”
Mrs. Ying thoughtfully handed her a cup of water and explained, “She’s fine, just a minor injury.”
Although Ying Miaomiao had traveled back in time for about a month, in reality, only a day had passed since the car accident. In her limited memory, she wasn’t sure about the specifics of Shi Xinyu’s injuries.
Mrs. Ying sighed softly, and then suddenly said, “Whatever you do by going back in time, it cannot exist in other people’s memories. You must have realized that.”
Ying Miaomiao paused with the cup of water in her hand. She nodded slightly, a little silent. After a moment, she said, “I realized it. But it’s enough that I remember it myself.”
Today, Mrs. Ying seemed somewhat downcast. She forced a smile and said, “Go and see her quickly, she’s very worried.”
Ying Miaomiao knew this referred to Shi Xinyu, but she was a bit worried about Mrs. Ying. However, Mrs. Ying spoke first, before she could open her mouth: “I’m fine, you go to the living room. She’s right outside.”
Ying Miaomiao eagerly got up and pushed the door open. She saw Shi Xinyu standing on the balcony with her back to her, bathed in sunlight, like a fragile sculpture.
“Shi Xinyu.”
Upon hearing the voice, Shi Xinyu turned around abruptly.
Ying Miaomiao traced every inch of Shi Xinyu’s face with her eyes. She was thinner, and her injury hadn’t fully healed.
At first, Shi Xinyu couldn’t believe it and remained stunned for two or three seconds. Only after confirming that Ying Miaomiao was truly standing before her did she walk forward.
Her fingertip gently brushed Ying Miaomiao’s cheek, trembling slightly. The sunlight shone diagonally, and Shi Xinyu’s nose stung with emotion.
“You’re back?”
“I’m back.”
Ying Miaomiao opened her arms and gave Shi Xinyu a light hug.
Shi Xinyu lowered her eyes and hugged her back with restraint. Her voice was muffled, “Thank goodness you’re back.”
“Shi Xinyu, do you remember the question you asked me?”
Shi Xinyu remembered; she kept everything about Ying Miaomiao firmly in her mind. “Mm.”
“Before, I didn’t understand what love was, but now I do. Love is something inexplicable, yet it’s perfectly justifiable.”
“Shi Xinyu.”
Ying Miaomiao held Shi Xinyu’s shoulders, looked her in the eyes, and earnestly expressed her love: “Life is long, and this question is too difficult. An answer will take a long time. Are you willing to listen?”
Shi Xinyu suddenly leaned closer, touching her forehead to Ying Miaomiao’s. Her eyes were closed, her eyelashes trembling slightly. As body heat transferred through their skin, her voice trembled: “Okay.”
The two of them lingered for a while. Ying Miaomiao suddenly remembered that Mrs. Ying was still in the room, and she quickly became more alert. “Shi Xinyu, my mom is still in the room.”
During the thirty-one hours and twenty-eight minutes that Ying Miaomiao was gone, Shi Xinyu had already met Mrs. Ying.
But Ying Miaomiao was still a little nervous. She muttered, “You’re so outstanding, she must like you a lot. Is meeting the parents a bit rushed right now?”
Shi Xinyu took Ying Miaomiao’s hand and squeezed it gently: “I’ve already met Auntie, as Miaomiao’s partner.”
…
Although Ying Miaomiao was in the most dangerous position in the car, somehow she didn’t suffer any injuries at all.
In contrast, Shi Xinyu was scratched in several places by shattered glass. Fortunately, they were only superficial wounds and not serious.
After the two of them had recuperated, it was time to go back to work.
Ying Miaomiao was extremely reluctant. The days when she didn’t have to wake up early and woke up with Shi Xinyu beside her were simply too wonderful.
But people still had to work.
She and Shi Xinyu returned to the company, and this time, they didn’t intend to hide anything. After this ordeal, Ying Miaomiao had come to a realization.
She could use her strength to prove herself against other people’s gossip and rumors. She was Ying Miaomiao, after all.
Therefore, as the two walked hand-in-hand from the elevator toward the office area, they garnered many stares.
Lou Jia wasn’t as shocked; she had a kind of calm demeanor, acting as if she had long known their secret.
But when Ying Miaomiao sat down at her desk, Lou Jia still asked, “You haven’t been in for so many days. Are you okay?”
Everyone in the company knew about the car accident Shi Xinyu had downstairs, but the specific situation that day was very vague.
Lou Jia didn’t know that Ying Miaomiao was also in that car.
Ying Miaomiao knew very well that she couldn’t tell anyone about traveling back in time, so she was vague: “Something came up, so I took leave.”
Seeing Ying Miaomiao’s reluctance, Lou Jia didn’t press further, but she still demonstrated her gossipy nature. Her eyes were bright, and she quietly leaned next to Ying Miaomiao, whispering, “Are you and President Shi planning to go public?”
Ying Miaomiao nodded, looking in the direction of Shi Xinyu’s office, a smile blooming in her eyes: “I figured it out. Nothing is as important as her, regardless of what others say or think.”
Lou Jia was very supportive.
The entire company eventually learned that they were together, but as time passed, people moved from initial shock to a calm acceptance.
Although there were still some people who made sour remarks, all voices ceased completely after Ying Miaomiao won the illustration award.
To celebrate Ying Miaomiao’s award, Shi Xinyu pre-booked a restaurant—not the small, stir-fry place the two usually enjoyed, but the top floor of the tallest building in the south city, where they rarely went.
From the restaurant’s windows, one could see the sea.
They arrived at the restaurant exactly at dusk.
The sunset was orange-red. Watching the sunset from the top of the high-rise felt like the distance had closed significantly.
The sea shimmered, and the setting sun’s glow sprinkled onto it, seeming to dye the entire ocean with color.
The interior of the restaurant was beautifully decorated, with a single red rose placed on the table.
Ying Miaomiao, however, wasn’t in the mood to admire the scenery. She subtly felt the ring in her pocket, determined to propose to Shi Xinyu tonight.
This ring was one she had personally designed and handcrafted herself.
The sun gradually sank into the sea, and the colors on the sea surface also faded, from orange-red to reddish-pink.
The waiter served the food: steak and salad, a classic Western pairing. Although the presentation at this restaurant was beautiful, Ying Miaomiao resisted the urge to take a picture.
She was completely nervous right now.
Shi Xinyu, however, seemed much calmer. Tonight, the two of them, in a rare moment, ordered a bottle of wine. The rich, mellow red wine glowed like amber under the light.
Ying Miaomiao swirled the wine glass. She didn’t know how to savor wine and drank the entire glass in one go. She took a deep breath, filled with a mix of nervousness and resolve, and felt for the ring in her pocket.
“Shi Xinyu, I… I have something to say to you.”
Immediately after saying this, Ying Miaomiao abruptly stood up. She held out the ring she had prepared long ago, her eyes sincere.
But then, she saw Shi Xinyu’s hand pause as she was taking something out of her bag. It was also a ring box.
They simultaneously flipped open the boxes. Two rings shone brilliantly under the light, and both of them were stunned.
Ying Miaomiao sat down weakly, suddenly feeling like laughing, but the air was so quiet that one could almost hear the distant sound of the waves crashing.
She couldn’t hold back her laughter after all. “Did we think of the same thing?”
Ying Miaomiao cleared her throat, stood up again, and asked in her most formal tone: “This lady named Shi Xinyu, will you marry me?”
Shi Xinyu extended her hand, allowing Ying Miaomiao to slide the ring onto her finger. Her slender, fair hand looked even more beautiful with the ring on, and the size was a perfect fit.
Ying Miaomiao examined her creation with satisfaction.
Shi Xinyu, however, grasped Ying Miaomiao’s hand. “And you, Ms. Ying Miaomiao, are you willing to spend your life with me?”
Her gaze was tender, appearing especially affectionate under the light.
“I do!”
…
After dinner, the two decided to go to the seaside.
After the proposal, Ying Miaomiao felt the atmosphere between her and Shi Xinyu had become even more intimate.
The weather was excellent tonight. With few clouds, they could clearly see the stars twinkling over the sea.
There were many people on the beach at night. They found a secluded spot. The waves rose and fell rhythmically, surging up and retreating again and again, leaving moist trails on the sand.
They walked slowly along the soft sand. Ying Miaomiao took off her shoes, feeling the fine sand. Every step left a clear footprint, only to vanish instantly.
The sea breeze carried a unique salty, damp scent, ruffling Ying Miaomiao’s hair.
The wine she had rapidly consumed during dinner seemed to be taking effect now. Ying Miaomiao felt a little dizzy, and her cheeks were unknowingly flushed.
“Shi Xinyu.”
She suddenly spoke.
Shi Xinyu turned her head to look at Ying Miaomiao. Her hair was fluttering in the damp sea breeze. Shi Xinyu reached out, gently combing through the slightly messy strands.
“Are you cold?”
The night sea breeze was cool, but Ying Miaomiao felt hot all over. She shook her head, her eyes slightly hazy, and she leaned close to Shi Xinyu.
Her burning cheek pressed against Shi Xinyu’s face, transferring the warmth to her.
“This way you won’t be cold either.”
Embracing Ying Miaomiao, Shi Xinyu could hear her somewhat muffled voice.
“Shi Xinyu, I’m so happy.”
Shi Xinyu lowered her eyes. Her face was very red, her ears were scorching, and her breathing was slightly rapid.
She suddenly felt an urge.
Leaning close to Ying Miaomiao’s ear, she asked, “May I kiss you?”
Ying Miaomiao couldn’t be bothered to answer such a question. She felt a tickle in her ear and tried to move away, until she looked into Shi Xinyu’s eyes.
She froze for a moment, tilted her head back, and gave Shi Xinyu a light kiss on the lips, just a peck.
Shi Xinyu deepened the kiss. The taste on her tongue was the mellow fragrance of red wine, with a hint of sweetness.
She cupped Ying Miaomiao’s face, kissing her softly.
“Okay.” Ying Miaomiao took a breath before slowly managing to say ‘okay’.
Shi Xinyu couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time. She hugged Ying Miaomiao, drawing even closer. Her voice held a hint of amusement: “Miaomiao is so good.”
The moonlight was bright and clear. Ying Miaomiao was even more drawn to the warmth beside her. She pointed to the sky: “The moon is out too.”
Shi Xinyu looked up, gently stroking Ying Miaomiao’s soft hair. “Let’s come and see it together in the future too.”
Under the beautiful moonlight, love spread wantonly. There was no need for loud declarations or promises; everything was only in whispers.
