Chapter 87: “Direct Those Puppy Eyes At Your Wife; I Can’t Handle Them.”
Hearing that Xie Yin seemed to be playing for keeps, Huahua looked at Ji Yunfei blankly, only to be met by a similarly startled gaze from her master.
“What are you standing there for? Take her away already. I’m going to find my mothers.” Seeing Huahua’s hesitation, Xie Yin urged her with growing impatience.
Ji Yunfei saw the conflict in Huahua’s eyes and didn’t want to put her in a difficult position. She shot Huahua a quick look and gave a slight nod, signaling her to do as Xie Yin said.
With Ji Yunfei’s silent permission, Huahua—still baffled by what kind of drama had occurred between this little couple to warrant a trip to the dungeon—complied. She suppressed her strength and apprehended Ji Yunfei.
“Come with us,” Huahua said in a forced, deep voice, pretending to be stern since Xie Yin was still watching.
“Xie Yin… you’re really throwing me in the dungeon?” Ji Yunfei bit the tip of her tongue. The sharp sting caused tears to well up instantly. She blinked piteously at Xie Yin, her voice dripping with sorrow.
You wicked little snake, actually putting me in jail? Fine, I’ll play along for now. Once you get your memory back, I’ll be the one “punishing” you.
Despite her inner scheming, Ji Yunfei’s face showed nothing but the image of a woman whose heart had been shattered.
“……” Looking at Ji Yunfei’s teary, pathetic face, Xie Yin felt a sudden pang in her chest. For some reason, she found she couldn’t bear to see her like this.
But she quickly composed herself, shaking the thought away. “Playing the victim won’t work now. Why didn’t you think of this when you were teasing me? Enough nonsense. Take her away.”
With that, she turned and walked away without looking back, her blue-black robes disappearing into the distance.
Watching that cold silhouette fade, Ji Yunfei sighed helplessly and said to Huahua, “Let’s go. Take me to the dungeon.”
“Oh, right. Okay.” Huahua nodded and released her grip. “I’ll lead the way, Master. I didn’t hold you too tight just now, did I?”
“With that tiny bit of strength you used? It’d be a miracle if it hurt.” Seeing Huahua’s careful concern, Ji Yunfei laughed. She gently patted Huahua’s head. “My Huahua is the most sensible and lovable snake-baby.”
“Hehe… Master…” Being patted by Ji Yunfei again after so many months made Huahua ecstatic. Her tail wagged so hard it kicked up dirt in every direction.
Master is still the best, the gentlest Master. She missed those warm palms so much she wished she could just melt into them.
“By the way, Huahua, I remember when I visited the Snake Den before, there were no patrols. Why are there so many now?” Now that they were alone, Ji Yunfei began her questioning.
“Oh, that. I’m not entirely sure about the details, only that Auntie Xie ordered it.” Huahua frowned, trying to recall. “I think they said it’s to prevent intrusions from ‘predators with ulterior motives’…”
Predators with ulterior motives… those lunatics? Ji Yunfei’s heart tightened. Given the secrecy of the Snake Den, demon hunters shouldn’t be able to find it in a lifetime. But if things were this tense, it seemed even the Snake Den wasn’t entirely safe anymore.
“Hey, Master, tell me secretly… how did you offend the Boss?” Huahua’s gossipy voice interrupted her thoughts. Ji Yunfei looked up into Huahua’s teasing eyes. “Don’t tell me you’re innocent. You haven’t seen each other in so long, and instead of being all lovey-dovey, she throws you in jail…”
Ji Yunfei was silent for a moment. Then she said slowly, “Did Auntie Xie and the others not tell you? Xie Yin has amnesia.”
She watched as Huahua’s eyes bulged and her jaw dropped.
“Wait, for real? Boss lost her memory?” Huahua found it hard to believe, but thinking back, Xie Yin’s behavior lately had been different. She didn’t seem to recognize them at first, and she acted like a proud, arrogant young mistress—totally unlike her usual calm, reserved self.
“It looks that way for now. But for the specifics, we’ll have to ask Auntie Xie.” Ji Yunfei lowered her head, her mind a mess.
The shock of the amnesia news left them both in silence until they reached the entrance of the dungeon.
Ji Yunfei expected a dark, damp cell like a prisoner in a historical drama. To her surprise, the place was more like a small guest house. It was clean, appropriately sized, and fully equipped with amenities—they even had playing cards for entertainment.
Is staying in this dungeon actually a vacation?
“Huahua, you didn’t lead me to the wrong place, did you? This is a jail?”
Seeing Ji Yunfei’s disbelief, Huahua explained with a slow nod: “Master, you don’t understand. Our dungeon isn’t for physical torture. We focus on ‘spiritual enlightenment’ rather than bodily suffering.”
“You’ll have to make do here for a few days.” Huahua pouted. “But don’t worry, Boss must have misunderstood you. I’ll go put in a good word for you later, and she’ll definitely calm down.”
“It’s fine, don’t worry about me.” Ji Yunfei waved her off. Remembering Xie Yin’s intent to go tattle to Xie Chu and Yin Qing, she smirked. “She’s off to file a complaint. Auntie Xie and the others will be here to personally bail me out soon enough.”
“Mother! Mama—!” The wooden door burst open with a loud thud, followed by Xie Yin’s aggrieved cry.
Xie Chu and Yin Qing, who were leisurely sipping tea, were startled. Their hands shook, causing a few drops of tea to spill onto their fingers.
“Hiss…” Both winced quietly but quickly masked it, looking at the “Little Overlord” with gentle eyes.
“What is it, A-Yin? Who made our Eldest Miss so angry?” Yin Qing looked at the girl, who was huffing with puffed-out cheeks, and laughed dotingly. She stood up and guided her into a seat.
“Look at you, all fuming.” Xie Chu raised an eyebrow, poured a fresh cup of tea for Xie Yin, and pushed some pastries toward her. “Your favorite. Calm down and tell us what happened. Weren’t you supposed to be resting in the ice chamber to heal? Why did you come back looking so furious?”
Now that she had her “backers,” Xie Yin’s emotions boiled over. She ground her teeth and hissed, “I was resting peacefully when an blind human suddenly barged in…”
Determined to get revenge, she naturally “spiced up” her story. Under her narration, Ji Yunfei was transformed into a total stalker and a pervert.
As they listened, the older women’s brows furrowed. Xie Chu knew Xie Yin’s temperament during this “Little Overlord” phase and knew better than to believe the exaggerated version.
However, according to Xie Yin, this person called her “Yin-yin” immediately and claimed to be her wife…
There was no one else it could be but Ji Yunfei.
Xie Chu and Yin Qing exchanged a knowing look. Xie Chu stood up, feigning outrage: “How dare a human be so shameless! A-Yin, don’t be angry. I’ll go teach her a proper lesson.”
“Sweetheart, take A-Yin to rest first. I’ll go find that human.” Xie Chu gave Yin Qing a meaningful look. Yin Qing caught the signal immediately and sat down to coax Xie Yin back to her wooden hut.
Once Xie Yin had calmed down slightly, Xie Chu hurried toward the dungeon.
As she reached the entrance, she heard laughter from within. The words were muffled, but the atmosphere was clearly harmonious. Every so often, she heard Ji Yunfei laughing out loud.
This girl has zero awareness that she’s in prison… or rather, she knew exactly when I’d come to “rescue” her.
“Let me tell you…” Inside, the “prisoner” Ji Yunfei was lounging lazily on the bed with her legs crossed, chatting happily with Huahua and the other guards.
“Ahem.” Xie Chu’s light cough interrupted the lively conversation. “You all may leave.” She waved Huahua and the others away. “I need a private word with her.”
Once they were alone, Ji Yunfei sat up and walked to the bars separating them, her eyes sparkling. “Auntie Xie, you’re here to bail me out?”
Being stared at by those shimmering puppy eyes made Xie Chu’s skin crawl. She looked away from the overly intense gaze and rubbed her forehead. “Judging by the way you addressed me, your memory fusion went well. But direct those puppy eyes at your wife; I can’t handle them.”
Puppy eyes? Ji Yunfei blinked, her gaze clearing up. she scratched her head awkwardly. “I was just too excited to see you rescue me…”
“Wait, Xie Yin didn’t come?” Seeing no sign of her, Ji Yunfei felt a bit dejected but quickly recovered. “I suppose she wouldn’t come to bail me out… forget it. Get me out of here, Auntie Xie. I have so many things I need to know.” She gripped the bars piteously, pouting at Xie Chu.
Xie Chu couldn’t help but laugh at her frantic state. She shook her head and unlocked the cell door.
Free at last, Ji Yunfei bounced to Xie Chu’s side, moving a mile a minute. Xie Chu had to place a hand on her head to get her to stand still.
“Before you start your interrogation, tell me: how on earth did you find A-Yin? And managed to get yourself labeled a… ‘pervert’?”
Xie Chu hadn’t expected Ji Yunfei to find Xie Yin despite their careful hiding. She thought they could wait until Xie Yin recovered her memory, but fate had other plans.
Ji Yunfei sighed, sensing the irony. “That ice chamber—Xie Yin lured me there once before. I couldn’t get any real info on her condition, and I remembered my village has deep ties to snake demons, so I came back to try my luck. It was purely an accident that I stumbled upon her there today.”
Her cheerful tone faded into a quiet sadness. “From her words, I’ve already guessed it. She has amnesia, doesn’t she?”
