Chapter 58: They Are a Group of Lunatics Who Will Never Stop Until Their Goals Are Met.
“Hmm?”
“Is there something wrong with this photo?” Seeing Ji Yunfei take out the solo photo she had taken in Jizi Village, Xie Yin felt a pang of guilt. However, she maintained her outward composure and countered with a question.
“When… when did you take this…?”
“Oh, about two months ago, in this… Jizi Village? I’ve been sponsoring a young girl’s education there.”
“I had just happened to return from abroad at that time, so I went to visit her and decided to experience rural life while I was at it.”
“Why do you ask all of a sudden?” While speaking, Xie Yin’s hand instinctively touched the tip of her nose, and her gaze drifted through the air. She didn’t even notice the rapid pace of her speech driven by nerves. Fortunately, Ji Yunfei’s mind didn’t seem to be focused on her expression, so she didn’t notice the abnormality.
“It’s nothing. I just thought it was quite a coincidence. Let me tell you a secret: I actually came from this village.” Hearing Xie Yin’s explanation, Ji Yunfei didn’t doubt her, feeling that she had simply been overthinking.
Really, how could I associate someone with that snake demon just because of a single photo?
She nodded and picked up the photo again to examine it carefully. Of course, her intent was only to find something to tease Xie Yin about. However, in the eyes of a certain guilty person, this action became a lethal flying dagger that could strike a fatal blow at any moment.
“Hey, what are you doing—” The photo was suddenly snatched from her hand. Ji Yunfei pursed her lips and reached out to grab it back. However, Xie Yin held the hand with the photo high above her head while using her other free hand to hold Ji Yunfei back; Ji Yunfei’s lunging grab hit nothing but air.
“What’s so good about this kind of photo? Am I, the soot-faced version, more attractive than the living, breathing version standing right in front of you?” Xie Yin stuffed the photo into her pocket, crossed her arms, and looked down at Ji Yunfei.
“I’ve seen plenty of your refined beauty; isn’t it nice to see the ‘down-to-earth’ version occasionally? It’s fine if you take one, I still have…” Ji Yunfei narrowed her eyes, the corners of her mouth curling up slightly as she slowly produced various versions of “Down-To-Earth Xie Yin” from her pocket.
“!” Xie Yin’s composure shattered. Her eyes filled with embarrassed annoyance, and she began to stutter: “You… you, you! Why did you only pick these photos!” With that, she reached out, trying to snatch them back from Ji Yunfei.
Having learned her lesson just a moment ago, Ji Yunfei wasn’t about to let her succeed. With a mischievous grin, she precisely dodged Xie Yin’s advance, even “provoking” her as she moved: “Come and get them, Yinyin—”
“I won’t bicker with you… I’ll take this as a unique way of showing your love for me.” Seeing her triumphant look, Xie Yin stopped her movements and ceased playing the game of “Catch Me If You Can.”
“You just said you were from that village?”
“A-Fei, you’ve never told me about your past in detail. I’m curious…”
“Can you tell me about it…? I want to know more about you…” She led Ji Yunfei to the sofa to sit down, covering Ji Yunfei’s hands firmly with her own, her gaze sincere.
Startled by the abrupt shift in topic, Ji Yunfei met those eyes. Her heart stirred, and before her brain could even process it, she had already nodded.
“I told you before, after that scumbag left, I lived at my grandmother’s house. During that time in the village, I was actually very happy. There was no threat from the scumbag, and I had my loving grandmother by my side.”
“In that loving environment, I began to open up my heart…”
“But even now, I still habitually retreat. Loving me might be very exhausting…” Ji Yunfei lowered her eyes, her voice growing soft.
“Never mind, let’s not talk about that.”
“You didn’t know, did you? I was the king of the kids in the village; even the stray dogs by the road had to listen to me.” When she said this, a smile appeared on Ji Yunfei’s face that she herself didn’t notice. Xie Yin found herself staring blankly.
“Actually, I did think about just staying in the village to accompany my grandmother forever, but she wouldn’t let me. So, I came to the city to strive. I thought everything would be better once I moved to the city, but I ended up being just another miserable worker.” Ji Yunfei shrugged, her face showing a touch of helplessness.
She paused, looking up into Xie Yin’s soul-stirring eyes, and reached out to stroke her cheek: “But… thinking about it now, it’s not so bad.”
“If I had stayed in the village, I wouldn’t have met you, right? My Polaris.”
A wave of heat rolled across Xie Yin’s face. She pursed her lips and smiled, nodding at Ji Yunfei: “Mm. So, I have to thank you for choosing to come to the big city.”
But even if you hadn’t come, I would have actively sought you out, A-Fei.
If Ji Yunfei wanted to live a stable life in the village, Xie Yin would have become a young teacher volunteering in the mountains or a backpacker lost in the forest. There was always an identity that would allow her to get close to her; her plasticity was very strong.
If Ji Yunfei was used to retreating, it didn’t matter—she would give her the most steadfast love.
“Xie Yin.”
“Hmm?”
“I want to hug you.”
Actions spoke before words. Xie Yin proactively embraced the person beside her: “What’s there to ask about a hug? Next time you want one, just do it.”
“Okay.”
Xie Yin’s embrace was just like her—warm and passionate. Ji Yunfei leaned quietly in her arms, her sense of security satisfied at this moment. Without realizing it, she actually fell asleep again.
“A-Fei? A-Fei?” Xie Yin called out softly to the person in her arms, but the only response was light and steady breathing.
She let out a soft laugh, lifted her up in a princess carry, and took her upstairs.
You worked hard today, good A-Fei. Have a good sleep.
Knock, knock, knock—
“Come in.”
“Uncle Mo.”
“Ah, it’s A-Chu and the others. Sit down quickly.” The old man sitting on the rattan rocking chair, who had been resting with his eyes closed, flicked his olive-green snake tail and stood up to pour tea.
“Uncle Mo, I’ve already explained A-Yin’s situation to you over the phone.”
“Is there any way…” Before Xie Chu could finish, Uncle Mo raised his hand to signal her to stop talking.
Only after the surroundings were completely silent did he leisurely hand the two of them cups of tea. He then turned to a nearby bookshelf and began rummaging. Before long, he returned and sat opposite them with an ancient book whose cover was severely damaged and noticeably yellowed.
He flipped to a page that had a leaf tucked inside as a bookmark. The lines of text were filled with prominent red annotations, indicating he had already done thorough research.
“According to the records, Demon Hunters are often immortal and their movements are mysterious, taking on various identities as they roam the world.”
“Furthermore, they often don’t engage in direct combat with a demon. Instead, they apply certain methods first to lure the prey’s primal instincts into overriding their reason and forcing them to reveal their true form. This way, they can carry out the hunt ‘justifiably’ without being held accountable.”
“A-Yin’s behavior is very clear; it matches the records in the book. There must be a Demon Hunter at that temple, and they have already targeted her.” At this point, Uncle Mo sighed deeply and flipped to the last page of the book, which had a snake-shaped pendant tucked inside.
He picked up the pendant and handed it to Xie Yin: “Keep this safe. You must not take it off, do you understand? At the critical moment, it can call back your reason. You must not give those guys a chance.”
“Remember, they are a group of lunatics who will never stop until their goals are met. Based on what you said, they must have given your lover something. You must take the opportunity to investigate, do you understand?”
“Do not alert the enemy. You must remember: do not let your lover become suspicious, and especially do not let those lunatics notice anything unusual.”
“I know, Uncle Mo.” Xie Yin reached out to take the pendant, placed it around her neck, and then nodded to Uncle Mo.
“Alright, A-Chu, when you have time, take her to the Spiritual Spring for a few days. The holy water of the Spiritual Spring can suppress the abnormalities she has experienced recently.”
“Okay, we’ll head out then.” Xie Chu nodded and led Xie Yin out the door. Standing outside were Yin Qing and the not-yet-transformed Yin Wan, who had been waiting for a long time.
“Ma? A-Wan? Why are you just standing here waiting like silies?” Xie Yin was a bit surprised to see the woman and the snake coiled on her shoulder standing by the door.
“Your sister and I were worried about you. Well? What did Uncle Mo say?” An unmaskable worry was on Yin Qing’s face, and Yin Wan, coiled on her shoulder, straightened her body and flicked her tongue at Xie Yin.
Seeing this, Xie Yin chuckled and shook her head: “It’s fine, don’t worry. Uncle Mo gave me this.” Xie Yin curled the corners of her mouth and held up the pendant around her neck to show the person and the snake.
“It will protect my sanity. As for the rest, I will solve it.”
“So you can rest assured. Trust your excellent daughter; I can handle everything.”
“Let’s not talk about this anymore. Shall we go see everyone in the clan? It’s been a long time.” She didn’t want Yin Qing to worry too much, so she stopped the topic and shifted the focus to the clansmen.
Yin Qing also understood Xie Yin’s intent and didn’t pry further, simply nodding: “Mm, let’s go.”
“Phew…” After returning to her familiar wooden cabin for a short rest, Xie Yin lay back on her chaise longue, rubbing her brow periodically.
Although she remained calm and looked confident in front of others, she knew her inner unease better than anyone. She wasn’t very certain about the current situation.
A-Fei, what should I do this time?
Her gaze moved slowly down from the ceiling to the chaise longue beneath her. Those erotic memories surged back once again—Ji Yunfei’s smirking face and those somewhat “Wicked” methods were still vivid in her mind.
“Do it yourself…”
“Let me hear your voice…”
“Sigh…” Xie Yin covered her burning cheeks with her hands and sighed softly.
This time, she must not let Ji Yunfei know she is a snake demon… she didn’t want to gamble again.
However, Ji Yunfei said she didn’t like concealment. Was what she was doing really correct? Did a “white lie” count as something unacceptable?
Xie Yin couldn’t think about it that much now. The priority was to deal with those lunatics. Every day they remained was an extra day of danger for her, let alone spending a lifetime with Ji Yunfei.
She had to survive first before talking about anything else. If she lost her life, how could she wait for her A-Fei?
At this thought, Xie Yin’s eyes filled with determination. She reached out to stroke the pendant hanging around her neck, having made up her mind.
Knock, knock, knock— Rapid knocking at the door interrupted her thoughts. After a nearly imperceptible frown, Xie Yin stood up and opened the small wooden door.
Creak—
“Boss!!”
