Assassin, Don't Be Too Arrogant [E-sports] - Chapter 12
“I’m heading to the back mountain now, YAO, are you there yet?”
“My display says I’m almost there.” As soon as the words left his mouth, he was blocked by a man dressed in black with his face covered.
[Man in Black: Was it you who took him?]
[Jyao: Who? I was just hired to investigate the truth of the matter.]
[Man in Black: Do you think I’d believe that?]
Before Jian Yao could explain, the man in black raised his right hand and summoned several skeletal puppets. The dialogue box continued to display.
[Man in Black: Since you won’t talk, then don’t expect another chance to speak.]
“Seriously, bro, did you even give me a chance to speak?” Jian Yao muttered under his breath, but his actions didn’t falter.
He drew the jade whip fastened at his waist and flicked it downward. The whip transformed into a longsword, shimmering in a jade-green hue. The hilt was wrapped with white, floating short cords, each end adorned with jade beads that dangled in the air, swaying gracefully with the movements of the fight, occasionally clinking together to produce crisp, melodious sounds.
Skeletons closed in from all sides. Knowing that to capture the rebels, one must first capture their leader, Jian Yao spun into the air and charged straight at the man in black with his sword.
[Jyao: Are you the demon who’s been plaguing the village?]
[Man in Black: I don’t have that kind of free time.]
[Man in Black: But you took someone of mine. You deserve to die a thousand deaths.]
[Jyao: Who exactly are you talking about?]
As they spoke, the other man effortlessly dodged his attack.
[Man in Black: Shi Jin Shan Si Xu.]
[Jyao: Si Xu? My junior brother?]
At this line, the man in black halted his attack and looked directly at the person before him.
Only then did Jian Yao get a clear view of the man in black’s face—strikingly handsome with a wild aura. There seemed to be a mark near the corner of the man’s eye, partially hidden by his black hair, flickering in and out of sight in the wind.
[Man in Black: You say he’s your junior brother? Why should I believe you?]
[Jyao: Whether you believe me or not is up to you. When did my junior brother go missing?]
[The man in black appeared to ponder deeply, a flicker of something other than coldness in his eyes: I don’t know.]
After saying this, the man in black vanished—
“You don’t know either?” Jian Yao found it absurd. He crossed his arms over his chest and sighed, then asked into the phone, “How are things on your end?”
“Xiao Yi is in a PK now,” Su Ze stared at Zhong Yuyi’s screen. “In his field of view, he suddenly saw someone dressed in white. The system automatically advanced the plot, controlling Xiao Yi’s character to go up and ask if that person was the one who kidnapped me.”
Jian Yao tilted his head. “That plot sounds familiar.”
“You two, two main storylines,” Wen Zhe chimed in. “If nothing goes wrong, there are four protagonists in this instance, split into two teams. Yao, who’s rescuing someone; me, who’s with Yao; Su Ze, who’s been kidnapped; and Zhong Yuyi, who’s already gone to rescue Su Ze.”
[So that’s how it is.]
[Looking at it this way, this instance seems pretty interesting.]
[Only fun if you randomly get Yao and Wen Zhe’s main storyline.]
[Meaning, Su Ze and Xiao Yi’s is too scary.]
[I’m speechless. The developers didn’t even label the two main storylines, just said it would be very different from before.]
[I really didn’t expect them to change it like this.]
[But it’s fine. We just happened to get two guides.]
[Hahahaha, that’s the goal for us ordinary players.]
“So that means our perspectives can connect?” Jian Yao asked.
“Yeah, theoretically, that’s how it should be.”
“Then we don’t need to call, we can just watch each other’s streams,” Su Ze chimed in, promptly opening Jian Yao’s live stream. “Hanging up now, Captain~”
After the call ended, the fried rice they had ordered was brought to the table.
“Let’s eat first,” Wen Zhe stirred the rice for Jian Yao and placed it in front of him. “Don’t go hungry.”
“Thank you.” Jian Yao inhaled the enticing aroma, his hunger growing more pronounced. He swallowed hard and waited for Wen Zhe to start eating before he spoke.
Eagerly taking a bite, he looked at Wen Zhe with sparkling eyes. “This is so delicious!”
Wen Zhe smiled, ruffling Jian Yao’s hair. “As long as you think it’s delicious.”
[That smile!!]
[Who has ever seen Wen Zhe smile like this, oh my god!]
Jian Yao tried to get used to having his hair ruffled. Wen Zhe definitely treated him like a younger brother.
“By the way,” Jian Yao suddenly stood up and headed toward the door, only to turn back halfway and lean down to look at Wen Zhe. “You didn’t pay this time, right?”
“No, don’t worry.”
“Good, I’ll go settle the bill first.” Only then did Jian Yao feel reassured enough to push the door open and leave.
Wen Zhe glanced at the scrolling comments on the stream, a faint hint of pride in his expression. “See? Adorable, isn’t he?”
[What’s going on??]
[Something’s off, something’s off!]
[Adorable, adorable, my baby is the cutest.]
[Who is this? Has he been possessed?]
“I feel like getting a cat.”
[Go ahead.]
[But don’t you already have a corgi?]
[If cats and dogs can get along, then go for it!]
[Wen Zhe has changed his mind, huh? Hahaha.]
“Yeah, I’ve changed my mind. Who wouldn’t want to keep an adorable animal?”
[Get one of those cats that act all innocent but are actually mischievous—that would be hilarious.]
[Adopt our YAO, he’s also an adorable little cat~ (though he’s prone to getting feisty).]
[CP fans, don’t bring your shipping to the streamer’s face.]
“A feisty cat sounds nice too.”
Jian Yao had no idea what was happening, only seeing Wen Zhe watching the rapidly scrolling comments with a smile in his eyes. He moved his mouse back to the game.
–
As night fell, the back mountain took on an eerie atmosphere.
Halfway up the mountain, there was an unusual spot glowing with a faint red light, clearly meant to lure players deeper inside.
Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a massive mourning hall, with a crystal coffin inside. The person lying in the coffin—was his junior disciple, Si Xu.
[Player, will you open the coffin?]
Without hesitation, Jian Yao quickly clicked “Yes.”
[Hahaha! Hahahaha! Someone actually wants to open this coffin.]
A piercing, hollow voice echoed through the headphones. Jian Yao’s hand holding the mouse trembled slightly as he shifted the screen’s view toward the source of the sound.
Deep within the darkness of the cave, a pair of crimson eyes stared directly at him. A prompt appeared on the screen:
[Player has encountered a crisis. Please resolve it on your own. No save points available. If you die, you start over from the beginning~]
Wen Zhe glanced at Jian Yao and said, “Be careful. There are no save points.”
“Alright…” Jian Yao’s eyebrow twitched as he suppressed the urge to complain, forcing a smile. “Let’s get started, then.”
[Jyao: Who are you?]
[Female Ghost: Who am I? Hahaha, didn’t he tell you who I am?]
[Female Ghost: Of course not, since I’m the “calamity” in his words.]
[Female Ghost: If he thinks I’m a calamity, then I’ll be the ultimate calamity!]
No sooner had the words been spoken than the female ghost charged straight toward Jian Yao. Her long black nails were about to pierce his skin, but Jian Yao remained completely calm, maneuvering his character to dodge sideways.
Unexpectedly, the female ghost revealed a triumphant smile.
[Female Ghost: Since you want to save someone, let the person in this coffin become you.]
Soon after, a haze of smoke drifted out from the cave. Jian Yao wanted to dodge, but it was already too late.
[Congratulations, player, you’ve been knocked out! Should’ve paid more attention, huh? Now, please ask your teammates for help.]
Jian Yao clenched the mouse, his eyes fixed on the screen. “I feel like I’ve been played.”
Seeing this, Wen Zhe reached out and ruffled Jian Yao’s hair. “Don’t worry, I’ll get revenge for you.”
Jian Yao nodded blankly, watching as the game screen showed his character moving on its own. In the game, he was now tightly bound by the female ghost and locked inside a coffin.
[Player perspective has been switched to God Mode.]
[Female Ghost: An immortal’s heart will surely enhance my powers even better.]
The female ghost’s face twisted into a hideous expression, yet she hesitated to strike.
[Female Ghost: He once said that night is what he fears most. I wonder what expression he’ll make when I kill the immortal he invited right before his eyes…]
“Wen Zhe, look,” Jian Yao pointed at the line with one hand while patting Wen Zhe with the other. “I feel like this has something to do with the village chief.”
Wen Zhe turned to take a closer look and nodded. “Yeah, I’m almost at the back mountain now.”
Even so, Wen Zhe’s side was even more troublesome than Jian Yao’s. He was either being sabotaged by passing imps or facing paths full of obstacles.
Most importantly, he could feel that his controls were fine, but in the game, his actions seemed delayed by a few beats, causing him to take hits he should have dodged.
“How could this be?” Jian Yao clearly noticed the problem.
“It’s a game mechanic. I didn’t read it carefully earlier. It says that players who choose the demon side have their movement speed and all other stats reduced by 50%,” Wen Zhe replied calmly.
“Reduced by 50%?!” Jian Yao exclaimed, unable to hold back his complaint. “That mechanic is shameless, isn’t it?”
Wen Zhe smiled at his words. “Indeed.”
Though he said so, Wen Zhe remained completely unfazed. He simply increased the speed of his keystrokes.
When Jian Yao looked back at his screen, the character in the game was already moving perfectly in line with Wen Zhe’s commands.
His gaze occasionally drifted to Wen Zhe’s face—
This man is too strong…
“Enjoying the view?” Wen Zhe raised an eyebrow, a slight smile playing on his lips.
At first, someone was just sneaking glances, but now he was staring outright. What was that about?
“Sorry,” Jian Yao quickly shifted his gaze back to Wen Zhe’s computer screen, pursing his lips slightly. “It is a nice view…”
A splash of red blood stained the corner of the screen as Wen Zhe was hit again.
Finally, with his health bar nearly depleted, he reached the cave entrance. It was already night, and he saw the female ghost about to do something to Jian Yao.
[Wzhe: Stop!]
The female ghost glanced at him disdainfully.
[Female Ghost: Where did this brat come from?]
[Wzhe: Let my master go!]
[YAO’s role in this dungeon is Wen Zhe’s master!]
[This setup! So good!]
Comments flooded the screen, but Wen Zhe showed little reaction, continuing to click through the dialogue.
Jian Yao watched Wen Zhe’s left hand on the keyboard, his thumb rubbing against the side of his ring finger. He noticed a small mole there.
[Female Ghost: So this is your master, hahaha! Two hearts of cultivators will surely hasten my path to becoming a demon!]
As soon as the words fell, the female ghost charged straight at Wen Zhe. Wen Zhe had already tapped the keyboard, but the character in the game remained motionless, directly seized by the ghostly hand around the throat.
His vision grew increasingly blurry, the health bar continuously dropping, with warnings flashing across the screen.
Until the health bar hit zero, Wen Zhe’s sight was engulfed in darkness.
[What a pity… Player…]
[Pity? Not at all!]
As this line appeared on the screen, Wen Zhe watched his health bar refill completely, and the female ghost’s face gradually materialized on the monitor.
[Player restriction mechanism lifted. Identity unlocked: Demon.]
[Please defeat the female ghost and rescue your master!]
[Female Ghost: How can this be? You’re a demon?! Who are you?!]
