Assassin, Don't Be Too Arrogant [E-sports] - Chapter 11
【Oh wow, I didn’t notice that at all at first.】
【Yeah, when I first started playing, I had no idea what that progress bar was for, and the system didn’t give any hints either.】
【The smart ones already clicked into the dungeon and started playing along with the stream.】
【!!! You didn’t tell us in advance, huh?!】
【Anyone else want to team up?!】
【Me, me, me, me!】
【That’s weird, I joined a team but ended up in a different dungeon than them??】
【Same here!】
【So strange, does this dungeon have two main storylines?】
“Buzz—buzz—”
Wen Zhe’s phone vibrated. He glanced at the caller ID, answered, and held it to his ear, reminding the person on the other end, “What’s up, Su Ze? I’m live streaming.”
“I know, Captain. Put me on speaker—I want to ask Yao for some tips on how to clear it.”
“Alright,” Wen Zhe said to Jian Yao, “Su Ze’s looking for you.”
He then switched to speakerphone and placed the phone on Jian Yao’s seat. “Yao! Yao! Can you hear me?”
“Loud and clear,” Jian Yao replied, slightly frowning—this guy’s voice was way too booming. “What do you need?”
“I saw the comments saying you two are running a dungeon. Xiao Yi and I are doing the same one, so we wanted to ask for some advice.” Su Ze clicked his mouse, grumbling, “We even have to change clothes. So annoying.”
“Yeah, they won’t let you in without changing. So weird,” Zhong Yuyi chimed in suddenly. “By the way, how come you two are together again?”
“Exactly. Yao’s about to become the person who spends the most time with the Captain besides us.”
“Last time for late-night snacks too…”
Before Zhong Yuyi could finish, the dial tone—“beep—beep—”—left the two at the club in silence.
Su Ze: “Did he just hang up on me?”
Zhong Yuyi: “Not you—me.”
Su Ze: “What’s the Captain up to, anyway?”
“No idea, but it’s definitely nothing good.” Zhong Yuyi’s gaze fixed on one person at that moment, though the other remained completely unaware.
“Hey, never mind that for now. I still haven’t asked Yao my important question! Let me call again!”
“The number you have dialed is currently busy. Please try again later…”
【Hahahahaha.】
【Two poor little souls abandoned by the Captain.】
Zhong Yuyi was startled when Su Ze suddenly turned to look at him. He averted his eyes and cleared his throat. “What’s wrong?”
“Something feels off.”
Su Ze narrowed his eyes at him, making him nervous. “What feels off?”
“The Captain!” Su Ze patted Zhong Yuyi’s shoulder and leaned in close, just out of the camera’s view. “Think about it, Xiao Yi!”
The next second, someone gently pressed a fingertip to his lips. Su Ze watched as Zhong Yuyi leaned closer, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly.
“We’re live. Let’s save those kinds of talks for private.” A faint smile played on Zhong Yuyi’s lips as he withdrew his hand, leaving Su Ze standing there in a daze.
【What can’t we hear?!】
【Private talks??】
【Let us listen too!!】
Su Ze pulled his gaze back, forcing composure as he looked at the comments. “What do you mean ‘show you’? We have our secrets too, you know.”
“If he won’t answer the phone, I’ll just message him. I can’t let this strategy slip away!”
【Su Su Su: Captain!!】
【Su Su Su: Why aren’t you answering my calls!!】
【Su Su Su: Is it really that hard to get some tips?!】
When Su Ze tried to send another message, a red exclamation mark appeared in front of it.
“Xiao Yi, take a look—am I seeing things in broad daylight?”
“No, your eyes are working perfectly fine. The colors are all correct.” Zhong Yuyi chuckled after glancing, then confidently picked up his phone with a smile. “Just wait.”
Su Ze leaned in beside him, full of anticipation.
“The number you have dialed—”
With a thud, Zhong Yuyi flipped his phone face down on the table and opened Jian Yao’s livestream on his computer. Su Ze, struggling to hold back his laughter, even comforted him: “It’s fine. Knowing I’m not the only one who got hung up on makes me feel better.”
Zhong Yuyi sneered, glancing sideways at Su Ze and gritting his teeth. “You’re forcing my hand.”
Jian Yao, still out for a stroll, remained blissfully unaware that an internal conflict within AFG was about to erupt.
Suddenly, several notifications for highlighted comments caught his attention.
“Thank you to AFG.Zyy for the highlighted comment: Captain, don’t pretend you didn’t see it. Hurry up and take us out of the blacklist!”
“Thank you to AFG.Zyy for the highlighted comment: Captain, don’t push me!”
[What’s going on?]
[Could there be internal discord?]
[I always said they weren’t as harmonious as they seemed on the surface.]
[Haters, get out.]
Jian Yao turned to look at Wen Zhe, who remained unperturbed as he asked Zhong Yuyi, “What are you trying to do?”
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: Finish what you were saying earlier! Haha, scared now, aren’t you?]
“Oh?” Wen Zhe raised an eyebrow. “Is your typing faster, or is my mouth faster?”
A single sentence struck like a bolt of clarity!
Zhong Yuyi was startled but forced himself to stay calm.
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: Captain, I was wrong.]
Wen Zhe glanced at the barrage of comments and said softly, “You…”
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: Bro! Zhe-ge!]
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: Bro, I was wrong, bro. I really know I was wrong!]
After Zhong Yuyi sent over a dozen messages, Wen Zhe swiped his phone and spoke slowly, “Alright, you’ve contributed enough. I’ve unblocked both of you.”
“What contribution?” Jian Yao voiced the question on Zhong Yuyi’s mind.
Wen Zhe smiled, pointing at Zhong Yuyi, who was now first on the daily contribution leaderboard. “Their welcome gift to you.”
Jian Yao was taken aback. Well, you really couldn’t deny it. The top spot on the daily leaderboard had been decisively claimed.
Su Ze could no longer hold back his laughter. “Hahaha, Xiao Yi, you got played.”
But upon hearing this, Zhong Yuyi continued typing.
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: If it’s a welcome gift, it’s a bit too little.]
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: Let’s meet up for a meal later.]
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: My treat.]
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: It’s fine, bro.]
[[Highlighted Comment] AFG.Zyy: No need to unblock me. This is good enough.]
Jian Yao watched in disbelief as the screen filled with five-minute highlighted comments. At twenty yuan each, in just that one minute, a hundred yuan had instantly been earned.
“Did you unblock him?” Jian Yao turned and asked.
“I did. If you don’t believe me, look,” Wen Zhe said with a hint of grievance, placing his phone in front of Jian Yao to prove his point. “Both of them are unblocked.”
“Then hurry up and tell him to stop sending messages,” Jian Yao leaned closer to Wen Zhe’s ear. “It’s kind of embarrassing.”
“What?” Wen Zhe leaned even closer.
Jian Yao’s breath brushed against his ear, chaotic and warm. Wen Zhe stared at the camera, glanced at the live stream displayed on Jian Yao’s computer screen, and the expression in his eyes was something even he himself found difficult to decipher.
“Are you listening?” Jian Yao gently nudged the person beside him, trying to follow his gaze toward the screen.
Before he could turn his head, Wen Zhe blocked his view with a hand, turning him back to meet his eyes. “I’m listening.”
Their gazes and breaths intertwined without obstruction. Jian Yao’s body felt as heavy as a thousand pounds, unable to move.
In the quiet space, their hearts cautiously probed each other’s depths, their pupils reflecting only the other’s figure.
In this silent battle, neither wanted to lose.
“Ring—”
“Hello.” Wen Zhe’s voice was slightly hoarse.
Jian Yao stiffly shifted his leaning body back.
Saved…
“Captain, Captain~” Su Ze’s signature “coquettish” tone emerged from the receiver.
“Hanging up.”
“Don’t hang up, don’t hang up! Hey, hey, YAO! I’m looking for YAO! Captain, give the phone to YAO, please. I won’t talk nonsense, just ask about the game!”
Just as Wen Zhe was about to refuse, he heard Jian Yao clear his throat lightly, point at himself, and then spread his hands open, signaling him.
Tsk, unfair. How could there be a kitten acting coquettish?
“Su Ze, I’m here,” Jian Yao replied, taking the phone.
“YAO! Finally got to you~”
“You said you and Zhong Yuyi are also running the dungeon. Where are you guys?”
“We’re just wandering around according to what’s shown on Xiao Yi’s screen.”
“Same for us. You chose the Immortal, and he’s the Demon?”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m just wandering around the village now, waiting for the progress bar to fill up.”
As expected, he was the only fool in this world.
As the progress bar filled up, the dungeon’s scenery grew darker with the passage of time.
88… 94… 100!
“Finally!” Jian Yao followed the prompts appearing at his character’s feet and headed deeper into the mountains behind the village. “Su Ze, I’m done. The system is telling me to go into the mountains next.”
“Hey, I’m done too. Weird, why can’t I move…” Su Ze had just taken a few steps when the screen went black. “Ah! Xiao Yi!”
Su Ze threw the mouse aside and slipped into Zhong Yuyi’s arms, wrapping his arms around his waist.
Zhong Yuyi reflexively held him close, the face that had just appeared on the screen lingering in his mind.
“Mom, that scared me to death,” Su Ze looked up at Zhong Yuyi, his eyes slightly red with a hint of tears.
“What happened?”
“A ghost face suddenly appeared,” Zhong Yuyi patted Su Ze’s back gently, comforting him softly. “Don’t be scared, it’s over now.”
“How could that be? I’m still on my way to the mountains.”
“Let me see.” Wen Zhe had already opened Su Ze’s live stream.
Due to the stream delay, Su Ze’s progress was still at 92. The two of them watched the progress bar in unison. As it approached 100, Jian Yao’s throat moved slightly as he slowly exhaled, his palms sweating.
Then, Su Ze’s scream echoed in his ears, but his view was blocked.
“I paused it. If you’re ready, I’ll move my hand.”
【This pause is really disregarding my life.】
【Got scared at Su Ze’s stream, now scared again here.】
【Feels like my heart stopped.】
Wen Zhe’s palm rested gently over Jian Yao’s eyes, a comforting presence.
He replied softly, “I’m watching.”
Wen Zhe did not respond, only noticing a sliver of light piercing through his field of vision, gradually expanding in scope. The face on the screen slowly revealed itself from the hair down to the chin within his line of sight.
Even though Wen Zhe quickly switched the screen back, the ghostly face—covered in blood and wearing an eerie smile—had already imprinted itself in Jian Yao’s mind.
Still lost in thought, he was pulled back by Zhong Yuyi: “Su Ze’s screen still shows the message: [You have been captured by the BOSS. Quickly call your teammates to save you.]”
“I really passed out. What kind of karma is this? Xiao Yi, save me quickly.”
“I want to save you quickly too, but how can I do that when you’re clinging to me like this?”
He was the one who needed saving.
Seeing this, Su Ze quickly stood up, pushed Zhong Yuyi closer to the computer desk, and said with an embarrassed smile, “Hurry up, hurry up.”
Zhong Yuyi sighed helplessly and glanced at the mission—[Please proceed to the back mountain according to the instructions.]
