- Chapter 9 - I Am on Your Side
“You are here?”
Looking at the person who had just entered, Yu Qingdu lifted his eyelids and glanced up.
Shang Qingye walked over to Yu Qingdu’s desk and noticed a plate of grapes. He casually picked one up, hoisted himself up, and sat on the edge of the desk.
Acting in his usual cavalier manner, he began peeling the grape while asking, “Do we need to shoot today?”
Yu Qingdu looked at the man sitting right in front of him, blocking his view. He let out a light chuckle and spoke softly through his thin lips.
“No need.”
“Then am I here to model?” Shang Qingye popped the peeled grape into his mouth.
Yu Qingdu crossed his hands to prop up his chin, watching him intently. He continued in a nonchalant tone, “Not that either.”
He lowered his hands and picked up a grape for himself. His pale fingers peeled the skin bit by bit as he spoke, “I am going to introduce you to the studio’s other photographer.”
Hearing this, Shang Qingye stood up abruptly. He turned and grabbed Yu Qingdu’s hand as it was peeling the grape, his eyes sharp.
“Are you playing me?”
Yu Qingdu’s hand paused for a split second when it was grabbed, but he continued peeling as if nothing had happened.
“Why would you say that? Our studio originally had one photographer, and now we have added you.”
Shang Qingye loosened his grip on Yu Qingdu’s wrist slightly. By then, Yu Qingdu had finished peeling the grape. With a curve in his eyelashes, he looked up at Shang Qingye, held the grape up, and brought it to the man’s lips.
“Open your mouth.”
Shang Qingye did not open his mouth.
Yu Qingdu remained smiling and spoke unhurriedly, “Relax. Your styles are different, and the studio will only ever have the two of you as photographers.” He brushed the grape against Shang Qingye’s lips, pushing it slightly closer.
He stood up and rested one hand on Shang Qingye’s shoulder, leaning half his body against him. He tilted his hand holding the grape and leaned toward Shang Qingye’s left ear. After blowing a soft breath, his light laughter rippled in the man’s ear.
“Don’t worry, I am on your side.”
Shang Qingye finally opened his mouth and took the grape from Yu Qingdu’s fingers.
Yu Qingdu withdrew his hand. Feeling the moisture on his fingertips, he rubbed them together.
Just then, there was a knock on the office door. “Come in,” Yu Qingdu called out as he sat back down.
Shang Qingye also found a sofa near Yu Qingdu’s desk and sat down.
A handsome young man with curly black hair walked in. He scanned the office before addressing Yu Qingdu.
“Boss.”
Yu Qingdu nodded, a smile lingering on his lips. “Have a seat.” He gestured for the man to sit down.
The man with curly black hair nodded and took a seat on an empty sofa.
“I called you here today to introduce you to your new colleague.”
Yu Qingdu pointed toward Shang Qingye and said, “This is Shang Qingye. He will be a photographer for our studio from now on.”
He then pointed toward the curly haired man. “This is Qin Zhiyan, a veteran of our studio.”
Shang Qingye and Qin Zhiyan both nodded to each other. Yu Qingdu watched them with a flicker of amusement in his eyes. Maintaining his smile, he said, “Since this is your first day meeting, why don’t you give each other a hug?”
Shang Qingye turned to look at Yu Qingdu sharply, his face turning pale with annoyance and his gaze piercing. Qin Zhiyan also looked at Yu Qingdu in silence.
Seeing them both react this way, Yu Qingdu looked at Shang Qingye, especially his stony expression, and curled his lips into a delighted smile. “Since neither of you wants to, then forget it.”
“Qin Zhiyan, you may go now.” Qin Zhiyan nodded and left the room.
Yu Qingdu raised his arm to check the watch on his wrist, then looked at Shang Qingye.
“It is almost eleven. Would you like to accompany me for a meal?”
Shang Qingye looked up and grinned. “Sure.” He agreed quite readily.
“Is there any restaurant you want to eat at?” Yu Qingdu asked.
Shang Qingye shook his head and laughed. “Boss Yu still does not quite understand people like us. I have not really been to many restaurants.”
Shang Qingye spoke with complete frankness, looking quite carefree.
Yu Qingdu did not get annoyed or show any other reaction. He simply spoke with a normal expression.
“In your heart, do I seem that elegant and refined?”
Without waiting for Shang Qingye to respond, Yu Qingdu smiled. “It is my honor.”
The two ended up eating in the main hall of a restaurant. Watching Shang Qingye eat, Yu Qingdu found the sight quite pleasing. In reality, Shang Qingye was just eating normally; while he did not wolf down his food, he was certainly not eating in a way that would be described as particularly graceful.
As Shang Qingye ate, he could feel a strong gaze on him. He looked up to find Yu Qingdu staring at him and said bluntly, “Can watching me actually fill your stomach?”
It was meant as a provocative remark, but Yu Qingdu nodded seriously and replied as if it were a matter of fact.
“You are right.”
He looked at Shang Qingye with a smile, his gaze never leaving the man’s face. “I cannot help it. Your entire look hits all my aesthetic preferences, I even like your hairstyle very much.”
Hearing this, Shang Qingye’s neck flushed a bit red. No one had ever made such a bold declaration to him before. He opened his mouth and, imitating Yu Qingdu’s manner from that morning, replied,
“It is my honor.”
The two were still in the middle of their sweet and flirtatious back and forth when a voice suddenly broke the atmosphere.
“Yu Qingdu?”
The moment Yu Qingdu heard the voice, his brows began to furrow instinctively. He looked up to see a man wearing square framed glasses staring at him.
Seeing the newcomer, Yu Qingdu’s frown deepened.
Shang Qingye had been observant since he was young. He could see that Yu Qingdu felt nothing but disgust for the person in front of them.
“Is something the matter?”
For once, Yu Qingdu did not maintain an upward curve of his lips. His expression was flat as he asked in a cold voice.
“It really is you. With your hair dyed pink, I almost did not recognize you.”
The man pushed up his square framed glasses and spoke with a smile.
Since the man did not state his business, Yu Qingdu naturally ignored him. He turned to Shang Qingye across the table and said,
“Try some of this, I think it is quite delicious.”
Yu Qingdu placed a piece of lamb chop into Shang Qingye’s bowl. Seeing Shang Qingye look over, he simply blinked.
Shang Qingye remained uncharacteristically silent. Following the other man’s lead, he picked up the lamb chop and took a bite.
The man in the square glasses seemed to only just notice the person sitting opposite Yu Qingdu. Seeing Yu Qingdu’s intimate gesture toward Shang Qingye, he nudged his glasses again.
“Qingdu, this must be your friend. You are just like you were back in school, you still love eating with handsome guys.”
Shang Qingye’s mouth paused while chewing the lamb chop. Then, he slowly took another bite, chewed, and swallowed.
Yu Qingdu picked up a piece for himself. He bit into the meat on the lamb chop and did not speak immediately.
Seeing that Yu Qingdu still had no intention of acknowledging him, the man in glasses continued,
“I remember back then, you even lived and ate with Xu Yue. You two even swapped beds to sleep. Thinking about it now, I really miss those days.”
Listening to the man’s words, Shang Qingye glanced at Yu Qingdu. Xu Yue? Even an idiot could tell that this guy in the square glasses was seemingly talking about random things while actually trying to drive a wedge between them.
With an air of watching a good show, he met Yu Qingdu’s gaze across the table. Shang Qingye gave a provocative smile.
Yu Qingdu finally swallowed the lamb meat. With a look of indifference, he turned toward the man in glasses and spoke.
“Yan Er, are you finding it comfortable staying at Shengshi?”
