- Chapter 40 - Never Appear Before Me Again
Zhou Motang changed her clothes once more. After everyone had left, she locked the door before picking up her phone.
Her father had sent her numerous messages.
Demanding to know why she hadn’t replied.
Threatening to come to the capital to find her if she didn’t respond soon.
Terrified, Zhou Motang called him back.
Zhou Zhanpeng’s rough voice came through the phone. “Zhou Motang, you’ve really outdone yourself. Getting married, such a big event, and you didn’t even tell your own father!”
“When I went back home after your grandfather passed away, the house was empty. The neighbors told me you’d saved someone and left with him, that someone just happened to be the eldest son of the Huo family!”
“Well, well, well. I knew you’d make something of yourself. Married into a wealthy family, huh? Send your old man five million first, let me enjoy life a little.”
Her father was a lowlife with lofty ambitions.
To the Huo family, owing money might be a trivial matter.
But Zhou Zhanpeng was nothing but trouble: drinking, gambling, and worse…
She couldn’t let Huo Zhenzhou find out she had a father like that.
“I don’t have any money,” she said softly.
“No money? How could you, a rich man’s wife, have no money? Didn’t his family give you jewelry or gifts when you got married? I’m your father! Do you want me to be beaten to death by debt collectors? I’m the only family you have left!”
“Zhou Motang, if you don’t give me the money, I’ll go straight to your husband. It shouldn’t be hard to find the headquarters of the Huo Corporation. I’m his father-in-law, after all, do you think he’d refuse me?”
Zhou Motang gripped the phone tightly. “I’ll find a way to get you the money. Wait for me at home. But you have to promise me, don’t go looking for him.”
“Why not? Little brat, don’t tell me you lied to your husband and said your parents were both dead!”
Hearing this, Zhou Motang sneered inwardly. “Isn’t that the truth? What’s the difference between you being alive or dead?”
“How dare you curse me!”
“Get the money to me by tomorrow. Otherwise, I’ll go straight to your husband!”
With that, Zhou Zhanpeng angrily hung up.
Tomorrow?
Zhou Motang’s face turned pale. It took her a while to compose herself before she could step outside again.
Huo Zhenzhou had already been plied with alcohol by relatives and friends, his cheeks slightly flushed.
Even someone as aloof and dignified as him was caught up in the joy of the wedding.
Zhou Motang obediently sat beside him. “Husband, you’ve had too much to drink.”
“It’s fine. I can hold my liquor.”
Huo Zhenzhou took her hand. “You must be hungry. Have something to eat first.”
“Okay.”
Zhou Motang sighed inwardly. Even if Huo Zhenzhou didn’t love her, for the sake of responsibility, he had already given her the best he could.
He’d given her status, a wedding, and money.
The wedding had been so grand that even her father, who never paid attention to the news, had found out.
What should she do?
Her heart was filled with unease.
Time flew by, and soon they returned to the Huo residence.
The room was adorned with a large red “double happiness” character. After her shower, Zhou Motang came out to find Huo Zhenzhou leaning against the headboard, working on his laptop.
“Husband, are you very busy with work?”
“A little.”
Zhou Motang climbed onto the bed. “Since you’re busy, let’s postpone our honeymoon until you’re free. Tomorrow, I’d like to go back and pay my respects to Grandpa, to tell him about our wedding.”
Huo Zhenzhou closed his laptop. “Do you want me to come with you?”
“No need, darling. You’re the big CEO of the group company now,” Zhou Motang affectionately wrapped her arm around his. “But my hometown friends all know you’re the wealthy young master who stayed on the island for three months. After I go back, I want to help a bit with the island’s development, just some small funds to fix the roads and basic infrastructure. I’d like to set up a small clinic, a kindergarten, things like that…”
“Grandpa, grandma, and my parents gave me some money. I want to give a little back to them. Do you think that’s okay?”
Huo Zhenzhou picked up his phone. “Sure, you can keep the money they gave you for yourself. I’ll transfer the funds for the island’s renovations to you.”
He transferred three million to her.
Zhou Motang happily praised him, “You’re so wonderful, darling. They’ll remember you for this.”
Huo Zhenzhou replied calmly, “This is your doing.”
Zhou Motang leaned against him. “That’s because I have such an outstanding, responsible man as my husband.”
The next day, after breakfast, Zhou Motang left the Huo residence.
By 1 p.m., she had returned to the island.
As she stepped through the familiar doorway, the blaring sound of a TV and the stench of alcohol and cigarettes filled the air.
Disgusting.
Absolutely revolting.
Zhou Motang walked inside to find Zhou Zhanpeng half-asleep, drunk, and momentarily stunned to see her.
He immediately roared, “You’re only coming now? What time do you call this?!”
“Jing City is far from here.”
Zhou Motang remained composed. “I just got married yesterday. Today was supposed to be our honeymoon. I lied to my husband to come here. Dad, I can give you money, but can you promise me one thing?”
Zhou Zhanpeng asked casually, “What?”
“Take the money and leave this place. Don’t go to Jing City either. Pretend you never had a daughter, and I never had a father. Five million, you can buy a house in the county town and live comfortably off the savings, as long as you don’t mess around outside.”
“Five million won’t cut it!”
“Five million isn’t enough?! How many families don’t even have that much in savings?”
“Sure, it’s enough for ordinary families. But Zhou Motang, you didn’t marry an ordinary man! If I go to your husband, how much do you think Young Master Huo would give his father-in-law?” Zhou Zhanpeng was past caring. “I want ten million!”
“How am I supposed to give you ten million?!” Zhou Motang snapped.
She had it.
But she didn’t want to give it.
She didn’t trust Zhou Zhanpeng to keep his word.
A man like him had no credibility to begin with.
“If you don’t give it to me, I’m not leaving!”
“Dad, we’re father and daughter. Do we really have to go this far? If you go to him, he’ll find out I lied. Then forget five million, I won’t even get five cents.” Zhou Motang softened her tone. “How about this? You leave first. Once you’re settled somewhere, and I have the money, I’ll send it to you. They give me an allowance every month. Once I’ve saved enough, I’ll give it to you right away. After that, you can remarry or do whatever you want, just don’t come looking for me.”
Zhou Zhanpeng fell into thought.
“Anyway, I don’t have ten million to give you right now…”
She couldn’t hand it over all at once.
Who knew what he’d do with it?
Zhou Zhanpeng looked up. Zhou Motang stood in the doorway, blocking the light.
Two years apart, and now she’d married into wealth, she really had changed.
“From now on, don’t come back here. Everyone thinks you’re gone. If Huo Zhenzhou ever comes to the island and hears from the neighbors that someone’s been home, my deception will be exposed.”
Zhou Motang spoke with grave sincerity, “Dad, I’m begging you, okay?”
Zhou Zhanpeng had never done anything decent in his life. Now that a cool ten million was being handed to him, he should just take the money and disappear!
But Zhou Zhanpeng asked her, “If I leave, will you still give me the remaining payment?”
