Amnesiac Fiancé Married Another, So I Married His Brother - Chapter 39
On the eve of Huo Zhenzhou and Zhou Motang’s wedding, Huo Xuanye brought the newlywed gift that Li Su had purchased to Huo Zhenzhou’s doorstep.
“Brother, happy wedding. This is the gift Li Su and I picked for you. Wishing you a lifetime of happiness and many children soon.”
Huo Zhenzhou accepted the gift. “Thank you.”
Huo Xuanye continued, “Brother, even though you’ve lost your memory, we haven’t. If my wife and I aren’t present at your wedding tomorrow, I hope you’ll understand.”
“Understood.”
Huo Zhenzhou returned to his room, where Zhou Motang emerged from the inner chamber wearing a face mask. “Is that the wedding gift from A’Ye?”
Huo Zhenzhou casually placed it on the table. “Yes.”
“Did he say anything?”
“He did.” Huo Zhenzhou sat down on the sofa. “He’s worried Su Su might not be able to handle it and might leave the wedding tomorrow. He asked me not to be upset.”
Su Su!
Her again!
Tomorrow’s wedding was supposed to be her moment.
Would anything go wrong at the ceremony?
She could only hope Huo Xuanye would stick to Su Su like glue and stop her from doing anything reckless.
Perhaps she had watched too many melodramatic TV shows, but scenes of runaway brides and wedding crashers played out vividly in Zhou Motang’s mind.
She tore off her face mask and sat beside Huo Zhenzhou, leaning into him. “I’m so nervous about tomorrow’s wedding.”
“Don’t be. We rehearsed everything today. Just follow the script.”
“But I have this terrible unease.” Zhou Motang nestled against him, coquettish. “Promise me, no matter what happens tomorrow, you’ll stand by my side, okay? I have no family left in this world, you’re all I have.”
Huo Zhenzhou took her hand. “I promise. I’ll take responsibility for you.”
Just responsibility, no love?
On the day of Huo Zhenzhou’s wedding, the Huo residence bustled with activity from the early morning.
Su Su lay with her head pillowed on Huo Xuanye’s arm, lazily opening her eyes. “Do we have to get up early too?”
Huo Xuanye didn’t even open his eyes. “No.”
“Huo Xuanye, even if we’re not the bridesmaid or groomsman, it’s your own brother’s wedding. Shouldn’t we go early to help greet the guests?”
Huo Xuanye slowly opened his eyes. Was she so eager to go because Huo Zhenzhou was his brother or because he was her ex-fiancée?
“We’re not needed. Mom and Dad didn’t assign us any tasks. Our job today is just to eat, drink, and enjoy ourselves.” He nuzzled against her neck affectionately.
“Wife, Mom and Dad’s idea is for me to focus on keeping you happy today.”
Su Su replied airily, “You mean, to make me give up?”
Huo Xuanye tensed suddenly, lifting his gaze to hers. “Will you?”
Would she give up on Huo Zhenzhou and transfer her affections to him instead?
Su Su met his eyes.
They say eye contact is a kiss without desire.
At this moment, Huo Xuanye hovered above her, his freshly awakened eyes deep and fathomless, like a vortex threatening to pull her in.
Su Su answered softly, “Yes.”
Huo Xuanye’s heart settled.
If Su Su could say it aloud, it meant she had already thought it through long ago.
She had made her decision.
Huo Xuanye asked quietly, “Then will you go to the wedding today?”
“Of course.”
How could she not?
Her emotional resilience wasn’t as fragile as Huo Xuanye imagined.
The wedding venue was packed with distinguished guests.
It didn’t matter that Zhou Motang had no close friends or family present, the guests from the Huo family alone filled many tables.
Many at the wedding noticed Li Su and Huo Xuanye, as well as the fact that the bride was Zhou Motang, someone they were entirely unfamiliar with before.
They whispered among themselves.
Li Su turned a deaf ear to the murmurs.
Some quietly inquired about which prominent family Zhou Motang hailed from.
No one could have imagined that the exceptionally outstanding eldest son of the Huo family would end up marrying an ordinary girl.
Zhou Motang stood on the stage in her pristine white wedding dress beside Huo Zhenzhou, nervous.
During yesterday’s rehearsal, there had been no guests in the audience.
Today, the seats were packed.
Unconsciously, Zhou Motang’s gaze drifted toward Li Su.
Half of Li Su’s face was obscured by Huo Xuanye leaning in close, they seemed to be whispering, or perhaps Huo Xuanye was teasing her to make her smile.
None of the disasters she had imagined came to pass, nor did any sudden recovery of memories.
All in all, the wedding was perfect.
It would have been even more perfect without the guests’ gossip about her.
They called her Cinderella.
But so what if she was Cinderella? She had still succeeded in marrying the eldest son of the Huo family.
Below the stage, Li Su pushed Huo Xuanye’s face away. “Relax, I’m not going to rush up there and disrupt the wedding. I’m already married, I don’t want to commit bigamy.”
Huo Xuanye was pleased. “Good, as long as you remember you’re married.”
“You call me ‘wife’ in my ear every day, I haven’t had a single moment of peace.”
Li Su was exaggerating a little.
Was he really that chatty?
Huo Zhenzhou and Zhou Motang changed into their reception attire and began toasting the guests, starting with their table.
Li Su raised her champagne glass. Huo Zhenzhou stood mere inches away, once lovers and fiancés, they now stood on opposite sides, each beside someone else.
Huo Xuanye lifted his glass. “Brother, sister-in-law! Happy wedding!”
The word “brother,” which she had never uttered before, now slipped from Li Su’s lips. “Brother, sister-in-law, may your marriage be harmonious and last a lifetime.”
“Thank you,” Huo Zhenzhou said softly, clinking his glass against hers.
The crisp sound of crystal rang out.
For a fleeting moment, Li Su felt dazed.
She had once imagined the scene of her own wedding with Huo Zhenzhou.
But she had never imagined the scene of Huo Zhenzhou marrying someone else.
Yet here it was, unfolding right before her eyes.
Huo Xuanye pinched her waist lightly.
Li Su snapped back to reality and raised her glass with the others, taking a sip.
Zhou Motang stole a few glances at Li Su. The dazed look in Li Su’s eyes just now, she must have been thinking about Huo Zhenzhou.
After toasting this table, Zhou Motang quickly pulled Huo Zhenzhou away.
Li Su sat down, and Huo Xuanye took her hand, whispering, “Are you okay?”
Li Su shook her head slightly. “I’m fine.”
“What were you thinking about just now?”
Li Su didn’t tell the truth. “I was thinking that on our wedding day, you’ll definitely be more handsome than him.”
Huo Xuanye didn’t believe her, but he chose not to call her out. “Of course! I’m two years younger!”
Huo Zhenzhou’s wedding was swarmed by media.
As soon as the ceremony ended, photos and short videos were already circulating online.
After finishing the toasts, Zhou Motang returned to her room to change.
She picked up her phone, and the messages on the screen sent a chill down her spine.
[Daughter! I saw the news online, that’s you, isn’t it? My daughter actually married the eldest son of the Huo family and became the young madam!]
[Now that you’re part of a wealthy family, don’t forget about your dad. Send me some money!]
Followed by a bank account number.
Zhou Motang’s face turned pale.
The makeup artist walked in, and she immediately flipped her phone face down on the table.
The fact that her father was still alive could never be discovered by Huo Zhenzhou.
She and her grandfather had initially deceived Huo Zhenzhou, making him believe she had no other relatives besides her grandfather.
Before his passing, her grandfather entrusted her to Huo Zhenzhou’s care.
Now, he only felt a sense of duty toward her. If he found out he had been deceived, he would surely be furious.
Just as Zhou Motang was growing anxious, her phone rang again.
She stared at the device, feeling as though it were a demon,
one that filled her with dread.
