Always Chasing My White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 29.3
Her laughter echoed sharply in the silent, oppressive living room. “It seems I really am the one who’s being unreasonable.”
It felt as though something was tightening around Ruan Yang’s neck.
Xu Zhiyi’s laughter came in waves, like a rope coiling tighter and tighter around Ruan Yang, almost suffocating her.
The laughter also sent chills down Xu Rongjiang’s spine. He felt inexplicably mocked by Xu Zhiyi.
But there was nothing more he could say. Furious, Xu Rongjiang smashed the glass in front of him. “Finish your meal and get out! I don’t want to see you!”
“This is the house my mother left me,” Xu Zhiyi said, resting her chin on her hand as she delightedly watched Xu Rongjiang seethe with anger but unable to retort. “I’m letting you stay here as a favor, Father. The one who should leave isn’t me.”
Xu Rongjiang felt his blood pressure spike. He took a few quick breaths to calm his racing heart, then strode toward the door.
As he passed Ruan Yang, he paused.
Ruan Qingyu, who had followed him, was afraid Xu Rongjiang would take his anger out on Ruan Yang and quickly grabbed his sleeve.
The anger toward Ruan Yang still simmered in his heart, and Xu Rongjiang opened his mouth to say something. But Xu Zhiyi was still there, and his earlier praise of Ruan Yang’s obedience was still fresh in his mind.
Not wanting to lose face in front of Xu Zhiyi, Xu Rongjiang forced an extremely strained smile and made an effort to speak gently to Ruan Yang. “Yangyang, about yesterday. Uncle doesn’t blame you, don’t worry. Please keep your sister company for me. I have some matters to attend to at the company, so I’ll take my leave now.”
With that, he hurried away. Ruan Qingyu hesitated briefly between following Xu Rongjiang to the door and staying with the visibly distressed Ruan Yang, but in the end, she followed Xu Rongjiang.
The servants in the living room tactfully withdrew, leaving the empty room to just Ruan Yang and Xu Zhiyi.
Ruan Yang stood in place for a long while before finally walking over to the seat next to Xu Zhiyi and sitting down.
She picked up an unused pair of chopsticks and silently began picking out the chili peppers from the dishes.
Xu Zhiyi watched Ruan Yang’s movements the entire time. She never expected Ruan Yang not only to remain unruffled but to even have the leisure to sit down and pick out chili peppers.
The silence in the air was suffocating.
“Aren’t you going to thank me?” Xu Zhiyi finally spoke after what felt like an eternity. “I just saved you from a scolding, you know.”
Xu Rongjiang was a man who valued his pride and held grudges. If someone crossed him, he would find every possible way to get back at them.
Ruan Yang didn’t even lift her eyes, continuing to quietly pick out the chili peppers without saying a word.
“If you won’t thank me, then I’ll thank you.”
Xu Zhiyi’s gaze unconsciously drifted to Ruan Yang’s lips. Recalling the sensation from last night, she murmured softly, “Normally, he wouldn’t get this worked up because of me.”
It was all thanks to Ruan Yang standing up Xu Rongjiang, which had already pushed Xu Rongjiang’s emotions to the brink of anger.
Ruan Yang remained silent, and Xu Zhiyi suddenly felt it was all rather pointless.
As she picked up her bag and was about to stand up to leave, Ruan Yang abruptly set down her chopsticks.
“Still eating?” Ruan Yang glanced at Xu Zhiyi and asked softly, “I’ve picked out all the chili peppers for you.”
Xu Zhiyi looked down, ,it was the same dish she had given up on after impatiently picking at it for just a moment.
Her heart felt as if it had been struck by something.
Ruan Yang stood up, her eyes briefly resting on Xu Zhiyi’s hand holding the bag.
Her tone held neither blame nor resentment. She spoke calmly, word by word:
“Don’t smile like that anymore.”
It hurts me to see it.
With that, Ruan Yang turned and walked toward the door.
But before she had taken more than a few steps, the person behind her suddenly called out urgently, “Ruan Yang.”
Xu Zhiyi herself didn’t know why she had suddenly called out to stop Ruan Yang.
She only watched Ruan Yang’s retreating figure and felt a sudden panic as if she would lose something if she didn’t speak up now.
Ruan Yang didn’t stop or look back.
Xu Zhiyi’s mind went blank, and it suddenly occurred to her that yesterday had been Ruan Yang’s birthday.
“Happy birthday,” she said.
This belated blessing was spoken too quietly for Xu Zhiyi to know whether Ruan Yang had heard it or not.
By the time Ruan Yang’s figure had also disappeared from the room, Xu Zhiyi seemed to lose all strength and slumped into a chair.
The room, which had been filled with arguments just moments before, was now eerily silent.
It was unclear how much time had passed before Xu Zhiyi finally seemed to come back to herself. Picking up her chopsticks, she took a piece from the chili-free dish and tasted it.
A strange emotion suddenly surged into Xu Zhiyi’s heart.
It dawned on her that this had been the case for the past few years.
Ruan Yang had always been like this quietly picking out all the chili peppers from her dishes and placing them before her.
And she had only just realized it today.
The next morning, everyone in the film crew received a small cake and a cup of milk tea.
Ruan Yang found it a bit odd, but upon asking, she learned that Qu Lingxuan was visiting the set that day.
